I HAVE A 2010 VW JETTA WITH 118K ON IT AND WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY ENGINE DIED ON ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY CAUSING SOME SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I EVETUALLY HAD THE CAR TOWED TO NEAREST REPAIR SHOP AND THEY ESTIMATED REPAIR COST TO BE BETWEEN 4-5K RANGE TO REPLACE THE TIMING CHAIN TENSINOR. I DID A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH AND FOUND THOUNDS OF PEOPLE COMPLAING ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE. VW SERIOUSLY NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THIS. VERY DISSAPONTED. WON'T BUY ANOTHER VW EVERY AGAIN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE STOPPED, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ALTERNATOR AND TIMING BELT WERE RECENTLY REPLACED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. MCKENNA VOLKSWAGEN CERRITOS (18303 STUDEBAKER RD #5328, CERRITOS, CA 90703, 562-741-3035) WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A $249 DIAGNOSTIC FEE TO DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THERE HAS BEEN A STATEWIDE LAWSUIT AGAINST VOLKSWAGEN REGARDING 2010 JETTA TIMING CHAIN AND TIMING CHAIN TENSOR. THE DEALER SHIP HAS REFUSED TO CORRECT THE ISSUE WITH MY VEHICLE EVEN TOUGH IT IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. RICK CASE VOLKSWAGEN HAS REFUSED TO CHECK AN ISSUE THAT VOLKSWAGEN HAS STATED THEY WERE AWARE OF TIMING CHAIN ISSUES.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
THE TIMING CHAIN SYSTEM IN MY 2010 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA WOLFSBURG EDITION FAILED, RENDERING THE CAR IMMOBILE. FORTUNATELY, THE VEHICLE WAS IN A PARKING LOT, AS FAILURE IN A ROAD COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. BASED ON READINGS, THIS HAS HAPPENED TO MULTIPLE CARS WITH THE SAME ENGINE AND HAS RESULTED IN A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST VOLKSWAGEN.
FAULTY EGR SYSTEM PUTS MOISTURE IN THE TURBO INTERCOOLER ON THE DIESEL 2.0 ENGINE. INTERCOOLER EVENTUALLY FREEZES IN COLD TEMPERATURES. ENGINE DIES RANDOMLY DUE TO NO TURBO BOOST. MY CAR DIED WHILE MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN ACROSS 2 LANES OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. WE WERE ALMOST T-BONED BY A SEMI TRUCK HAULING A 53' TRAILER! MY DEALER HAD ONE OTHER TDI IN THE SHOP THE SAME DAY MINE WAS TOWED IN. VW HAS ENGINEERED A ' COLD WEATHER INTERCOOLER' AND IS AWARE OF THIS DESIGN FLAW. NOTHING IS MENTIONED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL ABOUT DRAINING THE WATER (WHICH ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE THERE) FROM THE SYSTEM OCCASIONALLY DURING WARM WEATHER. CARS UNDER THE 36,000 MILE WARRANTY HAVE HAD THE UPDATED INTERCOOLER INSTALLED FOR FREE. THIS UPDATE, THAT DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM, COST ME $1042.92. THE CAR STALLED DURING THE DRIVE HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE NEW COLD WEATHER INTERCOOLER WAS INSTALLED. IT STALLED 2 OUT OF 3 SUBSEQUENT TRIPS AFTER THE UPDATED INTERCOOLER. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED DUE TO THE ENGINE STARTING AND IMMEDIATELY STALLING. THIS ISSUE AROSE AFTER THE VW TDI EMMISSIONS FIX THAT WAS PERFORMED ON MY CAR IN DECEMBER OF 2017.
OIL LEAK ON BRAKES VACUUM PUMP. USUALLY A CHEAP DEFECTIVE O-RING RESULTING IN BIG OIL LEAK
SECOND FAILURE OF INTAKE MANIFOLD. VW HAS ADMITTED TO A MANUFACTURING DEFECT BUT ONLY EXTENDED WARRANTY. HAD THE MANIFOLD REPLACED AT 50,000 MILES ROUGHLY. UNIT FAILED AGAIN AT 150,000 MILES. I DONT BELIEVE THEY ORIGINALLY FIXED THE PROBLEM. VW IS PLACING HIGH COST ON OWNERS TO REPLACE AFTER 120,000 MILES. REPAIR RUNS HIGHER THAN $800.00. FAILURE TO REPLACE THIS PART CAN DEEM THE CAR UNSAFE.
ENGINE OF MY CAR CAUGHT FIRE AFTER A SHORT DRIVE, LUCKILY MY DAUGHTER WAS ABLE TO PULL IT ON OUR DRIVE WAY AND MOVE AWAY SAFELY BEFORE ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE. WE HAD TO CALL FIRE DEPARTMENT TO PUT OFF THE FIRE.
THE GAS ENGINE CAR STALLS OUT WHEN STATIONARY, IN MOTION, ON CITY STREETS AND HIGHWAYS.I TURN IGNITION OFF THEN START THE CAR AGAIN AND GO ON TO MY WAY TO THE NEXT STALL. IT IS NOT BAD GAS AND MECHANICS AND DEALERSHIPS ARE STILL GUESSING WHAT WRONG.
DIESEL FUEL FILTER IS CLOGGING UP AND WAS TOLD THAT IT REQUIRED REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF $7,000.00.
MY WIFE'S 2010 JETTA 2.0T TSI EXPERIENCED AN ENGINE STALL AND COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH ON A STRAIGHT SECTION OF CITY STREET. THIS WAS A ROUTINE TRIP UNDER CLEAR WEATHER CONDITIONS. WITH NO TRAFFIC BEHIND HER, SHE SAFELY COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AFTER WAITING 5-10 MINUTES SHE WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE AND, WITH NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS APPEARING, DRIVE APPROXIMATELY FOUR MILES HOME. THE FOLLOWING MORNING, UPON STARTING THE ENGINE, MULTIPLE CYLINDER MISFIRES BEGAN OCCURRING AND THE ENGINE WAS IMMEDIATELY SHUTOFF AND THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE DEALERSHIP DISCOVERED THAT THE STALL WAS DUE TO THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER FAILING, WHICH ALLOWED THE TIMING CHAIN TO SKIP SIX TEETH ON THE CAMSHAFT AND THE VALVES TO CONTACT THE PISTONS RESULTING IN THE ENGINE SELF-DESTRUCTING. THEY RECOMMENDED A NEARLY COMPLETE ENGINE REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF OVER $8,000. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW IN 2009 AND HAS BEEN MAINTAINED IMPECCABLY AS SPECIFIED BY VW. SPEAKING WITH THE DEALERSHIP ENGINE TECHNICIAN, WE LEARNED THAT THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER IS A KNOWN DEFECTIVE PART BY VW AND THAT IN 2011-2012, WAS REVISED SEVERAL TIMES IN AN ATTEMPT TO MITIGATE THE FAILURES. A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN WAS ISSUED BY VW TO DEALERSHIPS AND SERVICE DEPARTMENTS EXPLAINING THE ISSUE BUT NO NOTICES OR RECALLS WERE SENT TO CUSTOMERS INFORMING THEM OF THIS POTENTIALLY DEADLY COMPONENT FAILURE. I HAVE READ, BUT NOT INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED, THAT VW HAS ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS SPECIFIC COMPONENT IN EUROPE. SINCE THE BEGINNING OF 2016, AND OWING TO THE SIGNIFICANT SAFETY HAZARD, AS MANY AS THREE CLASS-ACTION LAWSUITS HAVE BEEN FILED AGAINST VOLKSWAGEN FOR THIS SPECIFIC COMPONENT FAILURE. WE ARE THANKFUL NO ONE WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED WHEN THE CAR STALLED DURING OPERATION, BUT NOW WE ARE FACING OVER $8,000 IN REPAIRS.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE GASKET, SEALANT, THE OIL SEPARATOR, THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER, THE TIMING CHAIN, THE TIMING CHAIN CASE COVER, THE TIMING RAIL TENSIONER AND MULTIPLE OTHER UNKNOWN PARTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000. THE VIN WAS AVAILABLE.
CAR KEPT STALLING AFTER TAKE OFF WHEN YOU ACCELERATED. WHEN TAKING IT TO THE REPAIR SHOP IT WOULD NOT START AND HAD TO BE TOWED THERE. WHEN THEY GOT IT THEY DISCOVERED ALL BUT 1 QUART OF THE OIL IN THE ENGINE WAS GONE. THEY DETERMINED THAT THIS MALFUNCTION DAMAGED THE ENGINE AND THE ENGINE WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. HAVE THE OIL CHANGED EVERY 3-5000 MILES AND IT WASN'T DUE FOR AN OIL CHANGE FOR ANOTHER 1000 MILES OR SO. THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHY THIS HAPPENED AND VOLKSWAGEN WON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. ALL OF THIS TOOK PLACE IN THE CITY. WE WERE TO AFRAID TO TAKE IT OUT ON THE HIGHWAY. CAR HAS 109000 MILES ON IT AND HAS BEEN A LEMON FROM DAY 1. THIS WAS JUST THE ICING THAT TOPPED THE CAKE.
ATTEMPTED TO START MY CAR ON A COLD DAY WITH LOW FUEL. THE ENGINE WAS JUMPY AND DIDN'T START. I WAITED AND ATTEMPTED AGAIN AND WAS ABLE TO GET IT STARTED, DROVE 500 FEET TO THE GAS STATION, FILLED WITH DIESEL. THE LIGHT THEN CAME ON AFTER I STARTED IT AGAIN. I CHECKED THE CODE, P2015. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO DORSCHEL VW IN HENRIETTA, NY. THEY CONFIRMED THE CODE SAID THE INTAKE MANIFOLD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. SAYING THE FLAP IS DAMAGED AND THEN SWITCHING TO SAY THE RUNNER IS DAMAGED. MOST OF THE TSI ENGINES HAVE HAD THEIR WARRANTY EXTENDED, BUT NOT FOR MY TDI. THERE ARE LOTS OF OTHERS COMPLAINING OF THIS CODE POPPING UP.
WHILE EXCELERATING FROM A RED LIGHT MY CAR WENT INTO "LIMP MODE" AND LOST MOST OF ITS POWER. I COULD NOT DRIVE FASTER THAN 40 MPH OR 2400 RPM. I CONTACTED VW DEALER AND THEY INSTRUCTED ME TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE IN WHICH WAS ONLY 8 MILES FROM MY HOUSE. ENROUTE TO DEALERSHIP MY CAR LOST ALL POWER AND SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I COULD NOT START THE VEHICLE AND HAD TO GET IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. UPON INSPECTION, IT WAS FOUND THAT MY HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP HAD FAILED WHICH CAUSED MY TURBO TO ALSO FAIL. THE FUEL IN THE TANK WAS NOT CONTAMINATED, THIS WAS JUST A FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM.
I HAD BEEN DRIVING MY CAR FOR ONE HOUR. I MADE A QUICK STOP AT MY HOUSE TO PICK SOMETHING UP. I PULLED BACK INTO THE STREET AND STARTED TO DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD WHEN MY ENGINE SHUT DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. I HAD TO PUSH MY CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS BY MYSELF AND A TOW TRUCK WERE UNABLE TO RESTART THE CAR AND IT HAD TO BE TOWED. AFTER EXTENSIVE TROUBLESHOOTING, THE DEALER DETERMINED MY ENGINE CONTROL MODULE HAD FAILED AND HAD SHUT ALL POWER TO MY FUEL INJECTORS. LUCKILY, I WAS NOT TRAVELING VERY FAST AT THE TIME NOR WAS THERE ANY SURROUNDING TRAFFIC. THIS COST ~$2000 TO REPAIR.
CAR LOST ACCELERATION GETTING ON HIGHWAY FROM ON RAMP AND THEN DIED IN THE LANE OF TRAFFIC. SPEEDCRAFT DEALER SAID THE ENGINE HYDROLOCKED AND THAT THE RECOMMENDED FIX WAS AN UPDATED INTERCOOLER AND THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE. THERE WAS A TSB THAT WAS ISSUED REGARDING THIS ISSUE. UPDATED 02/05/16*LJ *CN
CAR IN SHOP FOR APPROXIMATELY 11 DAYS. ALTHOUGH CAR OUT OF WARRANTY, FIXED WITH AUTHORIZATION FROM VW OF AMERICA AS A "WARRANTY" REPAIR AT NO CHARGE TO ME. BAD FUEL NOT AN ISSUE (TESTED). HPFP AND ALL MAJOR FUEL SYSTEMS/LINES CLEANED OR REPLACED. HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE.
P2015 - INTAKE MANIFOLD POSITION FAULT. INTAKE MANIFOLD VALVE MALFUNCTIONS AND STICKS CAUSING A SEVERELY ROUGH IDLE AND ENGINE STALL. THE CAR WAS ATTEMPTED TO BE STARTED AFTER SITTING OVERNIGHT IN A GARAGE. THE CAR SUCCESSFULLY TURNED OVER, BUT WAS IN A VERY ROUGH IDLE FOR A FEW SECONDS BEFORE STALLING. CAR COULD NOT BE RUN CONTINUOUSLY AT ALL AT THIS POINT. THIS PROBLEM BEGAN TO OCCUR AROUND 80,000 MILES, WITH NO INITIAL PERFORMANCE IMPACT, BUT THE PART ULTIMATELY HAD TO BE REPLACED AT 88,000 MILES WHEN THE INCIDENT DESCRIBED ABOVE OCCURRED.
DEALERSHIP PERFORMED 90K MILE CHECKUP. ALSO ASKED THEM TO DETERMINE IF CEL P0472 WAS COVERED BY WARRANTY. THEY CONFIRMED CODE, AND SAID NOT COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY. THE ALSO ADVISED THE CAR IS SHOWING INTERMITTENT CODE OF P0638 FOR THROTTLE ACTUATOR CONTROL (BANK 1). WRITTEN ON THE ESTIMATE BY VW DEALERSHIP IS "TECHNICIAN NOTED THAT WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE INTO THE SHOP, VEHICLE HAD NO THROTTLE CONTROL AND WOULD NOT INCREASE IN ENGINE SPEED. TECHNICIAN RECOMMENDS REPLACING THE THROTTLE BODY AND EXHAUST PRESSURE SENDER. TECHNICIAN RECOMMENDS CUSTOMER NOT TO DRIVE VEHICLE --VEHICLE WILL AT SOME POINT STOP DRIVING (MOVING) - IT COULD STOP MOVING AT ANY POINT, INCLUDING CROSSING A INTERSECTION". I HAVE NOT HAD ANY ISSUES WHATEVER WITH MY THROTTLE, BUT DUE TO THEIR DOCUMENTATION, IT APPEARS THERE IS A SAFETY ISSUE HERE DESERVING OF A MANDATORY SAFETY RECALL.
MY CAR KEEPS THROWING A P0401 CODE EGR INSUFFICIENT FLOW. THE DEALER TOLD ME ITS MIGHT BE A CRACKED DPF FILTER. AFTER LOOKING ON VW FORUMS ABOUT THE PROBLEM ITS GOING TO BE AROUND A $3000 FIX. SINCE THE CAR IS NOT A "CLEAN DIESEL" AS ADVERTISED THE SYSTEM IS GETTING CLOGGED DUE TO THE FACT THE CAR COMPUTER FAKE SOFTWARE
CAR IS THROWING P0401 FAULT CODE FOR EGR VALVE INSUFFICIENT FLOW. DEALER STATES THE DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER IS CRACKED. ACCORDING TO DATA, VW'S EMISSIONS SCANDAL SHOWS 40% MORE POLLUTANTS SPEWING INTO AIR. THIS IS CAUSING EXCESS EMISSION PART FAILURES. DEALER WANTS $2500+ FOR REPAIRS. ACCORDING TO VW FORUMS, THERE ARE MANY CASES OF EGR AND DPF FAILURES. CONTACTED VW AND THEY WILL NOT ASSIST. MY CAR IS DUE FOR SMOG 10/22/2015 AND IS NOT PASSING.
TURBO FAILED ON TDI
AT 60,000 MILES WE NOTICED A DECREASE IN ACCELERATION AND GAS MILEAGE IN 2010, VW JETTA TDI. THE DEALER SAID THEY FIXED THE ISSUES, BUT WE ONLY SAW A SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT IN THE VEHICLES PERFORMANCE. IN BETWEEN THE 60,000 MILES AND NOW 113,000 THE CAR HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED TO HAVE THE EGR VALVE, DPF FILTER, ALL SENSORS,. NOX AND SOX BURNERS TO BE REPLACED AT A TOTAL COST OF $10,000 DOLLARS. WHEN WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE THE DEALERSHIP SAID THAT THE DPF FILTER WOULD ONLY COST US $1000 DOLLARS TO REPLACE, TRY $4000 JUST FOR IT. WE HAVE TAKEN VERY GOOD CARE OF THE CARE AND FEEL THAT VW HAS MISREPRESENTED THEMSELVES IN THE VAULE OF THE VEHICLE AND THE UPFRONT REPAIRS. THE RADIO, ALL DOORS ACTUATORS AND TRANS HAVE BEEN REPAIRED ON THIS CAR. IT HAS BEEN A MONEY PIT.
I WAS DRIVING AT FREEWAY SPEEDS AND MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALER ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT IT WAS THE DPF (DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER) FAILED. THE FILTER WAS PLUGGED WITH CARBON. THE DEALER ADMITTED TO ME THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN DEFECT AND BAD ENGINEERING THAT AFFECTED MODELS 2006 - 2010. THEY TOLD ME IT FAILS EVERY 100-110K MILES AND HAS TO BE FIXED! I TOLD THEM I WOULD TAKE IT ELSEWHERE TO GET FIXED AS I WASN'T PAYING THAT KIND OF MONEY. THEY INFORMED ME NO LOCAL SHOP WOULD TOUCH IT. THAT IS NOT TRUE OTHER THAN THE LOCAL SHOP HAD TO BRING IT TO THEM FOR THE "SOFTWARE RESET". I HAVE SINCE LEARNED IT MAY AFFECT LATER MODELS BUT CANNOT CONFIRM. THE DEALER WANTED $2300 TO FIX PLUS TAX.

THE FAILURE RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED AND DRIVEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE CLUTCH KIT INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DIRECTLY RELATED TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 09V333000 (POWER TRAIN). HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.
WHEN TRAVELING ON I10 FREEWAY AT ABOUT 70MPH THE ENGINE WENT TO HALF POWER I TRIED TO GET TO A DEALER SHIP BUT BEFORE I COULD THE ENGINE QUIT WHILE ON THE FREEWAY. THIS WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP. ON MY TDI JETTA.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HESITATED PRIOR TO THE ENGINE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE ENGINE WAS DEFECTIVE. I WAS DRIVING MY 2010 VW JETTA TO WORK WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN IT BEGAN TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTED RAPIDLY BLINKING. LUCKILY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO A PARKING LOT. CALLED VW DEALERSHIP. THEY SUGGESTED TOWING MY VEHICLE. VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. ACCORDING TO THE VW DEALERSHIP, IGNITION COILS NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VW DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT THERE IS NOT A RECALL FOR THIS REPAIR. HOWEVER, I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR FAULTY IGNITION COIL IN PREVIOUS YEARS FOR THE JETTA. I THINK VW SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD.
VW TDI ENGINE: A POORLY DESIGNED DIESEL ENGINE PARTICULATE FILTER (PF). VW IS IRRESPONSIBLE IN DESIGNING, SELLING AND SUPPORTING REPAIRS TO THIS ITEM. COST FOR 100K SCHEDULED MAINT. FOR TIMING BELT AND OTHER PM WORK @ $3,127, PF IS EXPECTED TO FAIL BETWEEN 90K AND 130K MILES AND IS ON RECORD TO BE A PM REPLACEMENT PART IN THE SERVICE MANUALS. I EVENTUALLY TOOK IT TO VW AND GAVE THEM A COPY OF THE SERVICE BULLETIN, PROVIDED BY MECHANIC.VW INSISTED IT WAS BOTH EXHAUST PRESSURE SENSORS AT $607 THIS WAS WRONG, LIGHT ON IN 4 DAYS. COST TO REPLACE THE PF IS $6.2K. AT 100K MILES THIS CAR HAS COST ME $9,863 FOR VW SCHLD. MAINT.. REPAIRS THAT VW RECOMMENDS TO BE DONE TO THIS CAR. THE ENGINE SPONTANEOUSLY STOPPED RUNNING WHILE DRIVING. I WAS ENTERING AN INTERSECTION, TURNING LEFT, AND PUT IN THE CLUTCH TO DOWN-SHIFT (MANUAL TRANSMISSION) AND THE ENGINE STOPPED AS SOON AS THE CLUTCH PEDAL WENT DOWN, AS IF I HAD TURNED OFF THE KEY. THIS CAN MAKE IT QUITE INTERESTING, TURNING AT AN INTERSECTION WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND HAVING TO TAKE A HAND OFF THE STEERING WHEEL TO DO THE COMPLICATED RE-START - IF THE DRIVER WERE TO PANIC A RE-START WOULD NOT HAPPEN. SOMETIMES THE ENGINE ALSO RUNS VERY ROUGH, ESPECIALLY AT IDLE, AND WILL NOT ACCELERATE THE CAR - THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WHEN TURNING ONTO A STREET OR HIGHWAY AND NEEDING TO GET UP TO SPEED TO NOT GET HIT WHILE MERGING WITH TRAFFIC. THE ENGINE ALSO IDLES ROUGH PERIODICALLY BUT THAT HAS NOT BEEN A SAFETY CONCERN ALTHOUGH IT MIGHT BE RELATED TO THE OTHER PROBLEMS. THESE PROBLEMS HAPPEN AT ALL ENGINE AND AIR TEMPERATURES - HOT OR COLD, AND EVEN WHEN THE ENGINE IS FULLY WARMED UP. VW SAYING THAT THE WHOLE AC UNIT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED-AC COMPRESSOR, DRIER, CONDENSER, RECEIVER, ACCUMULATOR. VW OF AMERICA WAS CONTACTED AND REGIONAL MANAGER WILL NOT ASSIST WITH COST OF REPAIR-$2300. REASON: THE CAR HAS 93K MILES ON IT. AN AC SYSTEM SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN 3 1/2 YEARS (CAR BOUGHT 12/09) AND THEN WHEN MAJOR COMPONENTS REPLACED-AC COMPRESSOR- THEY SHOULD LAST LONGER THAT 10 MONTHS REGARDLESS OF HOW MANY MILES WAS PUT ON THE VEHICLE. ON 6/10/14 ALSO AT SPEED AND IN TRAFFIC CAR SUDDENLY DIED ONCE AGAIN, GLOW PLUG INDICATOR FLASHED, NO MESSAGE AND NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. ONCE WE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP, THE CAR RESTARTED AND WE FINISH TRIP WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. I HAVE SCHEDULED ANOTHER APPOINTMENT WITH VW SERVICE DEPARTMENT. *TR

I WAS TRAVELING AT @20 MPH. 100 YARDS DOWN THE BLOCK, THE ENGINE LOST POWER, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AS DID THE DIESEL COIL ICON. THE CAR WAS DEAD INSTANTLY. THERE WAS NO WARNING, NO GRADUAL FAILURE, NO TIME TO GET OUT OF THE STREET. PLEASE NOTE, I HAD MY VEHICLE REGULARLY SERVICED AT THE VW DEALERSHIP, INCLUDING INSTALLING THE FUEL INTAKE COUPLING THAT WAS THE SUBJECT OF A RECALL ABOUT A YEAR AGO. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID THERE WAS SOME BAD DIESEL GOING AROUND IN THE COUNTY WHERE I LIVE, BUT WHEN PRESSED ADMITTED THE BAD FUEL HAD NOT BEEN TRACED TO ANY PARTICULAR BRAND, BUT HAD APPEARED RANDOMLY. HE DID SAY THAT MY ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM WOULD BE REPLACED ON VW'S DIME, EVEN THOUGH I AM LONG OUT OF WARRANTY, AND THAT IT COULD TAKE 2 DAYS TO A WEEK TO PERFORM THE SERVICE. THERE IS NOTHING ON VW'S WEBSITE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, NOR ARE THERE REPORTS OF BAD DIESEL FUEL IN THE COUNTY. THE BLOGOSPHERE HAS REPORTS OF PROBLEMS IN THE DESIGN OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP THAT CAUSES IT TO BREAK DOWN AND SHED BITS OF METAL THROUGHOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM. I AM VERY LUCKY THAT THIS HAPPENED AT 20 MPH ON A TOWN STREET IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MORNING AND NOT AT 65 MPH ON A HIGHWAY WITH LOTS OF TRAFFIC. I AM GLAD VW IS COVERING THE COST OF REPAIRS. BUT I HAVE PERSONALLY RECOMMENDED THIS OTHERWISE TERRIFIC CAR TO MANY PEOPLE, SOME OF WHOM HAVE CHOSEN TO BUY IT. I AM NOW WORRIED THAT SOMEONE MIGHT GET DEAD BECAUSE OF THIS, ESPECIALLY SINCE VW IS EVIDENTLY ONLY CORRECTING THIS DESIGN PROBLEM AFTER AN ENTIRE SYSTEM FAILURE. THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILED AND CONTAMINATED THE WHOLE SYSTEM. IT WAS COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY BUT I WAS LUCKY I WAS NOT ON THE HIGHWAY. IF THE 2010 JETTA WASN'T UNDER WARRANTY IT WOULD HAVE COST $4660.22 TO FIX IT.

WHILE DRIVING MY 2010 VW JETTA TDI AT 45 MPH THE GLOW PLUG LIGHT BEGAN TO FLASH WITH NO WARNING AND ENGINE POWER BECAME DRAMATICALLY REDUCED. I WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN SPEED ON A BUSY ROADWAY AND WAS FORCED TO MAKE AN ABRUPT EXIT FROM THE ROAD TO AVOID CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. USING BACK ROADS WITH LOW SPEED LIMITS I WAS ABLE TO REACH A VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP. AFTER ARRIVING THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE RESTARTED. AFTER 3 DAYS OF INSPECTION IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP HAD FAILED AND THE METAL SHAVINGS FROM THE FAILED PUMP CONTAMINATED THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM AND CLOGGED IT WITH RUST. EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA COVERED THE COST OF THE REPAIR WHICH ENTAILED REPLACING THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED ME THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE TYPE OF HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP INSTALLED ON MY CAR WHICH IS WHY VWOA WAS COVERING THE REPAIR EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THERE WAS NO RECALL. GIVEN THE HIGH POTENTIAL FOR INJURY WHEN THIS KNOWN FAULT OCCURS, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY ALL VEHICLES (WHICH INCLUDE ALL 2010+ AUDI AND VW TDI ENGINES) THAT FEATURE THIS FAULTY FUEL PUMP HAVE NOT BEEN SUBJECT TO A RECALL TO HAVE THE PROBLEM REPAIRED. *TR
THE CAR HAD BEEN PARKED IN THE RAIN FOR APPROXIMATELY 90 MINUTES. I STARTED THE CAR AND DROVE SLOWLY THROUGH THE PARKING LOT. THE ENGINE STOPPED WITHOUT WARNING AND REQUIRED THAT THE CAR BE BROUGHT TO A FULL STOP AND THE IGNITION TURNED OFF BEFORE THE CAR COULD BE STARTED. THE CAR RAN FINE AFTER BEING RESTARTED. THIS IS THE 6TH INCIDENT OF THIS KIND THAT I HAVE EXPERIENCED. *TR

LAST YEAR, ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS DRIVING FINE. I TOOK IT TO DEALER AND SAID PROBLEM WAS DUE TO DEFECT IN EXHAUST FLAP. HE ASKED ME TO PAY $770.00. LUCKILY, THERE WAS RECALL ON THE SAME A MONTH LATER. DEALER FIXED IT, BUT ENGINE LIGHT STILL IS ON. HE TOLD ME THAT ONE OF OXYGEN SENSOR IS FAULTY NOW CAUSED BY EXHAUST FLAP PROBLEM AND SAID IT IS NOT COVERED BY RECALL AND ASKED TO PAY $550.00. VW REFUSED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. NOW, I CAN'T EVEN INSPECT THE CAR. PRESENT PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY ANOTHER RECALLED DEFECTIVE PROBLEM. *TR

VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO SERVICE LOCATION TO BE DIAGNOSED AND RESULTS WERE INDICATIVE THAT THE FUEL PUMP FAILED CATASTROPHICALLY RENDERING THE VEHICLE INOPERABLE. EXCESSIVE METAL SHARDS WERE EVIDENT ON THE FUEL FILTER. VEHICLE HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED PENDING A RESPONSE FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THIS FLAP IS EXPERIENCING ABNORMAL FAILURE RATE BETWEEN 25000 AND 70000 MILES. IT TOOK THEM APPROXIMATELY 1 1/2 WEEKS TO GET THE PARTS IN AND REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE EXPLAINED TO MY HUSBAND THAT THERE WAS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP, WHICH RESULTED IN METAL FRAGMENTS CONTAMINATING THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. AS A RESULT, HE WAS TOLD THAT EVERY PART WHICH CAME IN CONTACT WITH THE FUEL HAD TO BE REPLACED, INCLUDING THE FUEL TANK, FUEL LINES, FILTERS, FUEL INJECTORS, AND MANY OTHERS. THERE WAS A TWO PAGE LIST OF THE PARTS USED TO FIX MY CAR. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN RESULTING IN AN UNSAFE SITUATION. I WAS AT A LIGHT IN FIRST GEAR AT A COMPLETE STOP. THE ENGINE WAS IDLING ROUGH. (NOT THE FIRST TIME, BUT VW COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG). THE RPM ON IDLING IS NORMALLY 800. IT WAS UP TO 1,000. IT SPUTTERED TWICE AND HICUPPED FROM 1000 TO 700 TO 1000 TO 700 IN THE PERIOD OF 3 SECONDS. MY CLUTCH WAS IN AS WAS THE BRAKE AND I WAS IN FIRST GEAR SINCE I WAS AT A LIGHT BUT AT A STANDSTILL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT PRIOR TO THE FAILURE, THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER A VOLUNTARY RECALL FOR THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE RECALL COULD HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE FIRE AND DID NOT AGREE WITH THE ENGINEER'S FINDINGS. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,000. I SUSPECT THAT THE CURRENT FIX IS NOT A FIX AS THE TROUBLE WAS NOT WHEN DRIVING IT WAS AFTER THE CAR SET FOR A FEW DAYS AND ICE FORMED IN THE INTAKE. WHEN SLOWING DOWN TO A STOP THE CAR HESITATES WHILE IDLING AND THEN WHEN YOU START TO PRESS THE GAS PEDAL TO GO IT HESITATES MORE AND ALMOST STALLS. THE COOLING FAN SEEMS TO RUN EXCESSIVELY AFTER TURNING OFF MOTOR. *TR
I HAVE HAD SEVERAL ISSUES IN THE PAST MONTH WITH MY VEHICLE EITHER STALLING IMMEDIATELY AFTER START (WHILE CLUTCH STILL DEPRESSED) OR SHORTLY AFTER DRIVING. VOLKSWAGEN HAS IDENTIFIED THIS AS AN ISSUE WITH THE INTERCOOLER; THERE IS A FLAW IN THE DESIGN THAT IS LETTING WATER INTO THE AIR PIPES WHICH IS COLLECTING AND FREEZING. THREE TIMES THIS HAPPENED IN TRAFFIC, ONE TIME WHILE CROSSING A LANE WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC GOING 50MPH. VW DRAINED THE INTERCOOLER TWO WEEKS AGO AND SENT ME ON MY WAY BECAUSE THE PART IS BEING REDESIGNED AND IS ON BACKORDER. A WEEK LATER MY CAR FAILED SHORTLY AFTER LEAVING MY DRIVEWAY, STRANDING ME ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED BACK TO MY DRIVEWAY. VW DEALERSHIP AND CUSTOMER CARE WERE CLOSED FOR THE WEEKEND. MONDAY I HAD TO TAKE A TOW TRUCK RIDE 1.5 HOURS TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY'VE DRAINED IT AGAIN AND WANT ME TO PICK IT UP BUT HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED THE ISSUE IS NOT FIXED. THEY ACKNOWLEDGE IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE, IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE, THE CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY AND YET THEY WANT ME TO PICK UP AN UNREPAIRED CAR BECAUSE VW DOES NOT HAVE PARTS TO REPAIR IT. I LIVE IN VERMONT, THE WINTERS ARE COLD, I CAN'T RISK GETTING INTO AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE MY CAR FAILS DUE TO WHAT VW CLAIMS IS A KNOWN ISSUE. *TR
THIS IS THE SECOND OCCURRENCE IN TWO WEEKS WHERE MY VW JETTA TDI AUTOMATIC (DSG) 2010 CAR WITH 58K MILES STALLED. I AM ORIGINAL OWNER, HAVE NO PREVIOUS ISSUES WITH THE CAR AND HAVE COMPLETED ALL REQUIRED MAINTENANCE. SYMPTOM. SHORTLY AFTER STARTING CAR AND COMMENCING TO DRIVE, THE ENGINE SPUTTERED AND STALLED WITH JUST OVER 100 FT OF MOTION. I PLACED THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND WITH SLIGHT HESITATION, THE ENGINE STARTED AND I WAS ABLE TO RESUME NORMAL DRIVING. IN THE FIRST OCCURRENCE (APPROXIMATELY 1/5/12), THE CAR WAS PARKED OUTSIDE AT WORK FOR 8 HOURS AND THE OUTSIDE TEMP WAS IN THE LOW 30S. THIS STALL OCCURRED IN THE PARKING LOT THE SECOND EVENT (1/15/12), THE CAR HAD BEEN IN THE GARAGE FOR JUST OVER 2 HOURS AND THE OUTSIDE TEMP WAS 20. THIS STALL OCCURRED AFTER BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY ONTO RESIDENTIAL STREET AND STALLED AFTER COMMENCING FORWARD MOTION. *TR
VEHICLE HESITATES, USUALLY AT LOWER SPEEDS, BUT SOMETIMES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, AND STALLED COMPLETELY IN INTERSECTIONS TWICE. INITIALLY THIS WAS MOST OFTEN ON A COLD START, WITHIN THE FIRST 5-10 MILES, BUT NOT CONSISTENTLY. IT MIGHT DO IT ONCE A DAY, ONCE A WEEK, OR ONCE EVERY TWO OR THREE WEEKS. I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM TO BE FUEL SYSTEM RELATED AND NOT TRANSMISSION. I HAVE REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO DEALER WITH EACH SERVICE CALL (3 SO FAR, I HAVE 20K MILES TO DATE). DEALER INITIALLY SUGGESTED BAD FUEL AND TO BUY ONLY CHEVRON, BUT THERE IS NO CORRELATION BETWEEN FUEL SOURCE AND HESITATION, NO EVIDENCE OF WATER IN FUEL FILTER, ETC., AND I USUALLY PURCHASE CHEVRON FUEL. DEALER REPORTED BEING UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM WITHOUT "CODES". VEHICLE HESITATED AGAIN (11/25/11), WITHIN ONE BLOCK OF DRIVING AFTER 20K SERVICE. I IMMEDIATELY RETURNED TO DEALER, AND THEY WERE STILL UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE. DEALER HAS KEPT THE CAR AND CONTACTED VW USA TECH SERVICE, BUT REMAINS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE AS OF 12/2/11. MY DAUGHTER PURCHASED THE SAME CAR 3 DAYS AFTER I BOUGHT MINE AND HAS THE SAME PROBLEM (30K MILES SO FAR), BUT HAS NOT STALLED IN AN INTERSECTION - YET. THIS IS NOT OUR INABILITY TO DRIVE A STICK TRANSMISSION - BOTH OF US HAVE OWNED DIESEL JETTAS WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS FOR 10 YEARS PRIOR TO OUR RECENT PURCHASES. I CONTACTED VW USA AND HAVE RECEIVED THE SAME MESSAGE - UNLESS THEY CAN DIAGNOSE A SPECIFIC PROBLEM, THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO, BUT THEY DID SUGGEST GOING TO A DIFFERENT DEALER. VW DID PERFORM A FUEL LINE RECALL WITH MY LAST SERVICE, BUT THE HESITATION REMAINS. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF REPORTS OF THIS PROBLEM ON THE WEB, BUT VW IS UNWILLING TO ATTEMPT ANY REPAIR WITHOUT A SOLID DIAGNOSIS. STALLING IN INTERSECTIONS AND HESITATION WHILE DRIVING ARE UNACCEPTABLE PERFORMANCE FOR A CAR. PERIOD. I HOPE YOU CAN HELP. EVENINGS OR EARLY AMS ARE BEST TIME TO CALL. *TR
2010 VW JETTA TDI WITH ROUGHLY 35,650 MILES. WHILE DRIVING UP THE ON-RAMP TO ENTER THE INTERSTATE, GLOW PLUG DASH LIGHT CAME ON AND WARNED TO "CHECK ENGINE NOW." WITHIN 20 SECONDS, THE CAR LOST ALL POWER, AND LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO COAST OVER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE INTERSTATE (WITH DRIVERS FLYING BY AT 65+MPH AT 9:45PM). VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE VW DEALERSHIP. SERVICE REP CLAIMED "FUEL CONTAMINATION," WITH METAL SHARDS ALL THROUGHOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM. ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM HAS TO BE REPLACED ($10,000 REPAIR) WITH EQUIVALENT, NEW PARTS. ACCORDING TO VW SERVICE TECHNICIANS, THE PARTS HAVE NOT BEEN UPDATED DESPITE VW'S KNOWLEDGE OF THIS PROBLEM. AS A RESULT, "FUEL CONTAMINATION" COULD HAPPEN AGAIN, AND THE CAR COULD SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING AT ANY TIME WITHOUT NOTICE. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. LUCKILY, BECAUSE I WAS DRIVING AT NIGHT, THERE WAS NOT A LOT OF CONGESTION ON THE ROAD. HAD THIS HAPPENED DURING RUSH HOUR, THERE VERY LIKELY WOULD HAVE BEEN A SEVERE ACCIDENT. VW CLAIMS THE PROBLEM IS A RESULT OF THE POOR QUALITY OF AMERICAN DIESEL FUEL SUPPLY, SAYING THE TDIS ARE DESIGNED IN GERMANY TO RUN ON 100% DIESEL THAT'S FOUND IN EUROPE. IF THIS IS THE CASE, WHY ARE THEY SELLING GERMAN DESIGNED CARS IN THE UNITED STATES THAT DOESN'T HAVE FUEL SUPPLIES THAT ARE 100% DIESEL? VOLKSWAGEN NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL OF THE 2009/2010 JETTA TDI. *TR

MOTOR LOST MOST POWER BUT WAS ABLE TO GO 10-15MPH TO GET TO END OF TRIP. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND GLOW PLUG LIGHT FLASHED ON & OFF. CALLED VW AND THEY SCHEDULED APPT FOR NEXT DAY, SAID IT WAS OK TO DRIVE IN. BEGAN DRIVE HOME ON MAJOR CITY STREET. WHILE DRIVING, THE ENGINE DIED AND WOULD NOT RESTART. CAR STALLED IN LEFT LANE BLOCKING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. THE DRIVER OF THE FOLLOWING CAR WAS ABLE TO STOP TRAFFIC ENOUGH TO ALLOW US TO PUSH THE DEAD VW OFF THE ROAD TO THE RIGHT. CARS WERE ATTEMPTING TO PASS US AS WE PUSHED IT TO THE SIDE. CALLED VW AND THEY SENT A TOW TRUCK. DIAGNOSTICS THE NEXT DAY FOUND METAL IN THE TDI DIESEL HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP. FUEL SYSTEM IS TO BE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
I WAS DRIVEN UP A SMALL HILL GOING ABOUT 20 MPH AND AS I WAS COMING TO A STOP SIGN THE ENGINE STALLED. THERE WAS NO APPARENT REASON FOR THE STALLING. DURING SECOND VW DEALER SERVICE AT APPROXIMATELY 9,000 MILES , CHECK-ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON DURING THE PROCESS, TECH READ CODE AS A FAILURE IN A SECONDARY AIR-FLOW SENSOR, PART WAS REPLACE AND THE LIGHT WAS OFF. AT THIRD VW DEALER SERVICE AT 17,000 MILES, APPROXIMATELY ONE WEEK AFTER THE SERVICE, THE CHECK-ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AT START-UP. CHECKED GAS CAP, RE-SEATED AND LIGHT DID NOT CLEAR. AS OF THIS REPORT PROBLEM CODED: P2431, P2433, SECONDARY AIR INJECTION PRESSURE SENSOR CIRCUIT OUT OF RANGE, A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH REVEALED SIMILAR ERRORS IN CONJUNCTION WITH OIL AND FILTER CHANGES.
ON JULY 21 AT APPROX 1730HRS WHILE DRIVING LESS THAN 15MPH THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AND HAD TO PULL OVER WITH NO ENGINE. I PULLED OVER AND THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START IN NEUTRAL BUT HAD TO START WITH THE ENGINE IN PARK. THE VEHICLE IS A 2010 VW JETTA DIESEL. VEHICLE WAS CHECKED BY THE VW DEALER ON 7/23 AND NO CODES COULD BE FOUND AND THEY INDICATED NOTHING WAS WRONG. CALLED YOU COMPLAINT OFFICE 8/8 AND ODI # 10417948. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING A RESPONSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 44,100.
AS I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND I WAS ABOUT TO SHIFT TO A LOWER GEAR TO SLOW DOWN, THE ENGINE STALLED AND DIED. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP, AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE AGAIN. I DRIVE A DIESEL MANUAL TRANSMISSION ENGINE.
MY VW JETTA TDI STALLED WHILE COMING TO A STOP SIGN AFTER THE CLUTCH WAS DEPRESSED. IT DID THIS OCCASIONALLY DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP. AFTER A YEAR OF OWNERSHIP AND A DOZEN OR SO INCIDENTS, THE CAR STARTED TO STALL MULTIPLE TIMES DURING A ONE HALF-HOUR COMMUTE. TWICE RECENTLY, ONCE ON MY WAY TO WORK AND ONCE ON MY WAY BACK, THE CAR STALLED TWO AND THREE TIMES RESPECTIVELY. IT EVEN STALLED ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 65 MPH WHEN THE CLUTCH WAS DEPRESSED. USUALLY, IT STALLS WHEN COMING TO A RED LIGHT OR STOP SIGN WHEN THE CLUTCH IS DEPRESSED IN ORDER TO TAKE THE CAR OUT OF GEAR. AT 12000 MILES, THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND OFF A FEW TIMES AND THEN REMAINED ON. THE DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER AND EGR VALVE WERE REPLACED WHICH IS HIGHLY UNUSUAL FOR A CAR WITH SUCH LOW MILEAGE. ALSO, AFTER MY 20000 MILE SERVICE THE ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AGAIN AND THE DEALER REPLACED THE #4 EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR. BEFORE THE 20K SERVICE I HAD CALLED THE DEALER THE DAY I STALLED 3 TIMES AND REPORTED MY ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. I WENT TO THE DEALER A FEW DAYS LATER, THURSDAY, FOR THE SERVICE AND THE LIGHT HAD GONE OUT BY THEN. THE DEALER SAID THERE WAS A SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR THE ECM TO BE DONE IN ADDITION TO THE REGULAR SERVICE. I LEFT THE DEALER AFTER THE 20K SERVICE ONLY TO HAVE MY ENGINE LIGHT GO ON AGAIN AND THE CAR STALL AGAIN. SO I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER AND THAT IS WHEN THEY CHANGED THE #4 EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR. IT DID NOT SOUND TO ME LIKE A PROPER FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM AS I BELIEVE IT COULD BE EITHER AN ELECTRONIC GLITCH WITH THE ECM OR OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS OR SOME FUEL SYSTEM PROBLEM WHEREBY FUEL FLOW IS INTERRUPTED WHEN GOING FROM LOAD TO NO LOAD SCENARIOS, I.E. CLUTCH ENGAGED. ANYHOW, I STALLED AGAIN TWO MILES FROM THE DEALER FROM WHICH I HAD DRIVEN. THE DEALER SAYS THEY CAN'T DUPLICATE IT OR FIND ANY CODES RELATED TO IT. THEY WILL CALL VW AGAIN.
MY 2010 VW JETTA TDI HAS HAD 5 EPISODES OF STALLING (ACTUALLY IT DOES NOT STALL IN THE NORMAL SENSE OF THE WORD, THE ENGINE JUST STOPS RUNNING). IN ALL 5 INCIDENTS THE CAR NEEDED TO BE PLACED IN PARK, THE IGNITION NEEDED TO BE TURNED OFF AND THEN THE CAR COULD BE RESTARTED AND RAN NORMALLY. IN 4 OF THE INCIDENTS IT WAS EITHER RAINING OR HAD JUST RECENTLY RAINED. THE 5TH INCIDENT HAD HIGH HUMIDITY. THE O2 SENSOR HAS BEEN UPDATED TWICE. I HAD COME TO A FULL STOP AND WAS IDLING AT A RED LIGHT IN A BUSY INTERSECTION WHEN THE ENGINE STOPPED SUDDENLY. NO MISFIRING OR ROUGH MOMENTS BEFORE STOPPING, JUST A SUDDEN CUT OFF. I PUT THE ENGINE IN PARK AND TRIED RESTARTING THE ENGINE. NO SUCCESS. I PUT THE ENGINE IN NEUTRAL AND GOT A PUSH TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. TRIED STARTING THE ENGINE SEVERAL TIMES, IN PARK, WITH NO SUCCESS. VW CALLED A TOW TRUCK. BEFORE ACCEPTING A TOW I TURNED THE IGNITION FULLY OFF AND TRIED RESTARTING THE ENGINE. THIS TIME IT STARTED. I CANCELLED THE TOW. CAR IS RUNNING NORMALLY AGAIN. THIS SUDDEN STOPPING OF MY ENGINE HAPPENED ONE OTHER TIME WHEN THE CAR HAD ABOUT 4000 MILES ON IT. I WAS PULLING OUT OF A PARKING PLACE AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AS I WAS PULLING FORWARD AFTER JUST HAVING PUT IT IN DRIVE. I RESTARTED THE CAR AND A FEW SECONDS LATER THE ENGINE STARTED MISFIRING, BUT ONLY FOR A SECOND. THEN IT RAN FINE. NO FURTHER MISHAPS UNTIL MAY 17, 2011 AT 17,500 MILES. I NOTIFIED VW OF THE MISHAP WHEN I TOOK IT IN FOR IT'S FIRST CHECK-UP. VW SAID THEY DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG AND DIDN'T KNOW WHY IT HAPPENED. I CURRENTLY HAVE A CALL IN TO VW AGAIN, BUT HAVE NOT YET HEARD BACK FROM THEM.

I PURCHASED MY 2010 JETTA TDI NEW AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER 2009. IT IS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION. I'M A PRETTY CONSERVATIVE DRIVER AND ATTEMPT TO MAXIMIZE MY MPG. EACH DAY AFTER THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN SETTING OVERNIGHT AND IS COLD, I START UP AND DRIVE TO THE STORE, A 4 MILE DRIVE, THE ENGINE WILL PAUSE USUALLY WITHIN THAT 4 MILE DRIVE. SOMETIMES IT IS A SHORT JERK AND SOMETIMES IT IS A GREATER JERK. OTHER TIMES IT WILL HAPPEN ON THE RETURN TRIP HOME. BUT IT'LL HAPPEN ONLY ONCE UNTIL IT SETS AND COOLS OFF. I HAVE HAD IT IN THE SHOP TWICE WITH NO HELP. MY RESEARCH FINDS SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WHICH MAY BE THE ISSUE, BUT I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO TALK TO VW AMERICA TO SEE IF THEY WILL CONFIRM OR DENY THIS. THIS PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED SINCE I'VE HAD THE VEHICLE. IT HAS 6,500 MILES ON IT AND I'M HOPING TO GET IT FIXED BEFORE THE WARRANTY EXPIRES. NOT SURE WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN THE MILEAGE GETS HIGHER.
I PULLED INTO A PARKING SPOT , TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL TO COAST IN AND APPLIED THE BRAKE (APPROX 3 TO 4 MPH). THE ENGINE REVVED AND ACCELERATED. THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD. I PUSHED THE BRAKE PEDAL AS HARD AS I COULD. THE CAR MOVED APPROX 6 FEET AND OVER A 6 INCH CURB. SUDDENLY THE ENGINE RETURNED TO NORMAL REVS. LUCKILY THERE WAS ONLY LAWN IN FRONT OF ME OR I WOULD HAVE DONE SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE. STRANGELY THE CAR RADIO CHANGED STATIONS AT THE EXACT SAME TIME OF THE ACCELERATION. WE HAVE 2010 VW JETTA TDI AND WE HAVE THE STALLING PROBLEMS. IT STARTED ABOUT 3 MONTHS AFTER WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE. IE: IF YOU ARE SITTING AT STOP SIGN DURING HEAVY TRAFFIC, LEFT FOOT ON THE BRAKE, AND YOU ATTEMPT TO ACCELERATE QUICLKY, THE CAR WILL MOVE FORWARD SLIGHTLY AS IF IT STALLED, YOUR FIRST RESPONSE IS TO BRAKE QUICKLY, THINKING THE CAR STALLED, WHEN YOU REALIZE THIS IS NOT THE CASE, THEN ACCELERATE, THIS CAN CREATE THE SAME EFFECT, BECAUSE OF A PANIC SITUATION AND THE FOOT STILL ON THE BRAKE THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME SEVERAL TIMES, ALMOST CAUSING A SERIOUS T STYLE COLLISION. FUEL TESTS, BY AN ACTUAL FUEL LAB, SHOW FUEL IN THE SYSTEM MET ALL ASTM STANDARDS FOR DIESEL FUEL OILS. PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE MATERIALS WHICH COMPOSE THE FUEL FILTER/ WATER SEPARATOR HOUSING WERE APPARENT HOWEVER THEY WERE ATTRIBUTED TO "WATER" IN THE FUEL WHICH IS IRONIC BEING THAT IT IS A FUEL FILTER/WATER SEPARATOR. THE HPFP ( HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP ) WAS MOST PROBABLY THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE ENTIRE FAILURE. THIS VEHICLE HAS EXPERIENCED CONTINUAL PROBLEMS WITH ENGINE SHUDDERING AND STALLING. MOSTLY, WHILE IN 2ND , 3RD OR 4TH GEAR, EARLY ON INTO A TRIP THE ENGINE WILL SUDDENLY DECELERATE AND IN SOME CASE STALL OUT COMPLETELY. IT IS AS IF THERE IS A SUDDEN LOSS IN FUEL GETTING TO THE ENGINE. THIS STARTED SOON AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR. IT HAS BEEN INTO THE DEALERSHIP NUMEROUS (6 OR 7) TIMES FOR THIS WARRANTY ISSUE, INCLUDING EXTENDED STAY PERIODS OF SEVEN AND TEN DAYS. ON A 40 DEGREE DAY I DROVE THE CAR ABOUT 1 MILE. AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT IT STALLED. I HAD TO KEEP THE CAR IN PARK UNTIL THE LIGHT CHANGED, THEN I PUT IT IN DRIVE. WHEN THE CAR WAS INITIALLY STARTED IT DIDN'T SEEM RIGHT. IT DIDN'T SEEM TO HAVE POWER OR PICK UP. I NOTICED THE TACHOMETER WAS QUICKLY BOUNCING BETWEEN 1800 RPM DOWN TO 400 RPM PRIOR TO STALLING. CAR HAD HALF A TANK OF DIESEL, OUTSIDE WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE DRY. *TR THE CONSUMER STATED THE STALLING IS STILL ONGOING. MULTIPLE INCIDENTS THAT APPEAR TO BE THE SAME PROBLEM/DEFECT. 1. THE CAR SOMETIMES WILL NOT START FOR SEVERAL MINUTES, AND ONCE IT DOES FINALLY START, HAS A VERY ROUGH IDLE AND STALLS. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING MANUAL TRANSMISSION CARS SINCE 1975, AND I WAS UPSET THAT MY CAR WAS STALLING EITHER JUST STARTING OUT IN FIRST OR IN THE LOWER RPM RANGE OF THE LOWER GEARS WHEN TURNING AND MOVING THROUGH INTERSECTIONS OR TRYING TO GO UPHILL WHEN THE RPMS WERE IN THE LOWER RANGE. THEY TOLD ME THAT IN ORDER TO BE COMPENSATED FOR MY ACCIDENT, THAT I WOULD HAVE NEEDED TO HAVE HAD THE CAR TOWED IMMEDIATELY TO A DEALERSHIP AND HAD IT DIAGNOSED. SHE SUGGESTED THAT I TAKE IT TO BE DIAGNOSED. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO KEPT IT FOR TWO DAYS AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. A WEEK LATER, I WAS COMING TO A STOP FOR A RED LIGHT AND THE RPMS BEGAN TO FLUCTUATE LIKE IT WAS GOING TO STALL AND THEN IT WOULD COME BACK TO NORMAL RPMS. TOOK TO DEALER WHERE THEY TESTED BATTERY AND CHARGING SYSTEM; EVERYTHING WITHIN SPECS AND NO CODES. THEY KEPT CAR OUTSIDE OVERNIGHT AT 20 DEGREES AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP THE NEXT MORNING. I INVESTIGATED THIS ISSUE ON SEVERAL TDI FORUMS AND IT SEEMS THIS IS ATTRIBUTED TO ICE FORMING IN THE INTERCOOLER THEN THAWING WHEN WARMED UP. ENGINE WILL START NORMALLY UNTIL IT INGESTS THE WATER/VAPOR THAT SHUTS IT DOWN. SEVERAL OWNERS ARE REPORTING HALF CUP TO TWO CUPS OF WATER DRAINED OUT OF INTERCOOLER HOSES. SEVERAL OWNERS ARE REPORTING ENGINE EITHER SHUTTING DOWN OR GOING INTO LIMP MODE ON HIGHWAY AFTER ICE BLOCKS INTAKE SUFFICIENTLY. THE CONSEQUENCES OF THIS CAN INCLUDE: LIMP MODE, ROUGH STARTING, AND COMPLETED ENGINE DESTRUCTION BY HYDROLOCKING AND BENT OR BROKEN CONNECTING RODS. A FEW MONTHS LATER WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH THE VEHICLE STALLED. UPON RESTARTING THE VEHICLE IT FUNCTIONED NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON 3 OCCASIONS WHERE THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 10,000.
I WAS DRIVING ON A SECONDARY HIGHWAY GOING ONLY 30 MPH WHEN A WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. AT THE SAME TIME THE ENGINE STARTED RUNNING VERY ROUGH. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. AT THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH THE ENGINE OFF, I PULLED OUT THE JETTA HANDBOOK TO RESEARCH THE MEANING OF THE WARNING LIGHT. THE LIGHT BLINKING WAS THE ENGINE MALFUNCTION LIGHT. AFTER THAT I CALLED THE VW 800 ROAD SIDE PROGRAM, A TOW TRUCK CAME AND TOWED THE JETTA TO THE DEALER. NOW THIS MORNING I GO TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY INFORM ME THE COST OF GETTING THIS NEW CAR FIXED WILL BE $6,800.00. WITH THAT INFORMATION I HAVE TO ASK WHY AND THE DEALERSHIP PROCEEDS TO SAY I HAVE "BAD FUEL". THE COMMENT BY THE DEALERSHIP TRIGGERED ALL TYPES OF RESPONSES. THE FIRST RESPONSE WAS PROOF I PUT THE RIGHT TYPE OF FUEL IN THE TANK WHICH I DID. NEXT I HAD TO GO AND GET A SAMPLE OF FUEL FROM THE FILLING STATION. AFTER THAT I DELIVERED A SAMPLE OF THE FUEL IN QUESTION TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR TESTING. AS IT TURNS OUT THE FUEL WAS OKAY. WHILE I AM RUNNING AROUND DOING ALL OF THIS MY WIFE FINDS OUT VIA THE INTERNET OF ISSUES THE JETTA IS HAVING WITH THE FUEL PUMP. KEEP IN MIND, AT NO POINT HAS THE DEALERSHIP GIVEN ME INFORMATION REGARDING A POSSIBLE FUEL PUMP ISSUE, WHICH WOULD BE A WARRANTY ISSUE, AKA NO COST TO ME! THE VW OF AMERICA TECH ADVISED TEST DRIVING 20 MILES AND RETURNING THE CAR TO US. THE CAR WORKED WELL FOR THE NEXT 5K MILES BUT HAS NOW STALLED RANDOMLY AGAIN TWICE WHILE DRIVING. I WAS NEARLY HIT TODAY AS THE CAR STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION AS I WAS TURNING LEFT. PRIOR EVENTS HAVE LED TO NEARLY BEING REARENDED ON 4 LANE HIGHWAYS WITH 2 ADULTS AND A 3 AND 5 YEAR OLD IN THE BACK SEAT.
