May 2016

NHTSA Campaign: 16V502000

Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Buick Verano and 2016 Chevrolet Malibu as the electronic park lock lever may allow the ignition key to be removed without the transmission being in PARK. Also, certain 2013 Buick Encore, 2011 Buick Regal, 2013-2014 Buick Verano, 2011-2016 Chevrolet Cruze, 2010-2013 Chevrolet Equinox 2013-2015 Chevrolet Malibu, and 2011-2013 GMC Terrain vehicles may have been serviced with similar defective replacement electronic park lock levers. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention."

Risk: If the key is removed without the transmission in PARK, the vehicle may rollaway as occupants are exiting, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the key cylinder lock housing, free of charge. The recall began on October 14, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick 1-800-521-7300, and GMC 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 50490 and 50491.

NHTSA Campaign: 14V447000

Component: SEATS:FRONT ASSEMBLY:POWER ADJUST

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Buick LaCrosse, Regal and Chevrolet Camaro, as well as certain 2010-2012 Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles, equipped with power height adjustable driver and passenger seats. In the affected vehicles, the bolt that secures the driver's and passenger's power front seat height adjuster may fall out causing the seat to drop suddenly to the lowest vertical position.

Risk: If the driver's seat unexpectedly drops, the distraction and altered seat position may affect the drivers' control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the height adjuster shoulder bolts, free of charge. The manufacturer distributed interim letters to owners on September 11, 2014. The recall began on December 26, 2014. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), or 1-800-462-8782 (GMC). GM's number for this recall is 14271.

FireFiled: Mar 2026

Your vehicle suddenly lunged forward while driving at low speed, then caught fire when you tried to restart it — with no warning lights beforehand. The fire department had to extinguish the flames, and the vehicle was towed home. Even though your car had been serviced under a technical bulletin, the dealer didn't diagnose or repair the underlying issue that caused this fire. The manufacturer has opened an investigation, but the root cause needs to be identified and addressed.

Your 2010 Equinox's 2.4-liter engine has faulty piston rings that cause excessive oil consumption—you've had to add a quart of oil regularly. This led to your catalytic converter clogging, and while driving to Denver at 75 mph, cylinder 3 lost compression, forcing your car into limp mode and reducing speed to 20 mph. Chevrolet acknowledged this issue affects similar vehicles but said your VIN wasn't covered under their recall. Fixing this will likely require engine work to address the piston rings and may involve replacing the catalytic converter.

Your engine unexpectedly accelerated from 35 MPH to 75 MPH, and the brakes didn't respond properly, forcing you to pull over where the engine stalled and wouldn't restart. After the dealer replaced the upper engine, the same problem happened again at 65 MPH with shuddering, abnormal sounds, and stalling—this time requiring lower engine replacement. The root cause appears to be oil starvation in the engine, and the manufacturer has flagged this under a potential recall.

Your 2010 Equinox may consume oil faster than normal, causing the oil level to drop significantly between oil changes. In this case, the owner drove only 4,000–5,000 miles over several months before the oil became dangerously low, which damaged the engine beyond repair. You should check your oil level frequently (at least monthly) and top it off as needed to prevent engine damage.

Your engine is burning through oil quickly—you're losing about one quart every 1,000 miles. Your check engine light has been on since you noticed this problem started happening around 107,000 miles. The issue likely stems from worn internal engine components, and a mechanic will need to diagnose the root cause, which could involve anything from valve seals to piston rings.

Your engine is making a strange noise that a mechanic identified as a timing chain problem. The mechanic mentioned he's been replacing timing chains on Equinoxes frequently and warned that if it fails while driving, you could lose engine function and control of the vehicle. When you contacted Chevrolet, they didn't mention a technical service bulletin about this issue or acknowledge it as a known problem. Fixing this typically involves removing the engine timing cover and replacing the worn timing chain and related components.

Your defroster stopped working while driving, making it very difficult to see through your windshield. An independent mechanic initially replaced the defroster actuator, but the problem came back. When you took it to the dealer, they found the computer module controlling the defroster had failed and needed replacement. Chevrolet indicated your vehicle wasn't covered by their technical service bulletin for this issue. The fix will likely require replacing the instrument panel computer module and possibly the defroster actuator.

Your vehicle suddenly loses power while driving, which could create a dangerous situation on the road. You've already replaced several parts but the problem continues to happen. The cause might be related to engine timing or the camshaft, but the exact source hasn't been identified yet. A mechanic will need to diagnose the engine's timing system and camshaft components to find and fix the underlying issue.

Filed: Dec 2024

Your 2010 Equinox experienced three separate major failures: the engine stalled while driving at 50 mph and had to be replaced; the rear suspension and subframe collapsed due to severe rust while driving at 55 mph, causing a rear tire to stop rolling; and after refueling, the engine failed to start again. The dealer was unable to fix the final problem and the vehicle was deemed beyond repair at 158,000 miles. These issues likely require engine replacement, suspension and subframe repair or replacement, and fuel system diagnostics.

Your car stalls when stopped at red lights or stop signs and runs very rough right before it dies. You suspect the high-pressure fuel pump is failing, but the dealer hasn't fixed it yet. Filed: Dec 2024

While driving at 25-30 mph, your vehicle suddenly lost power with no warning lights, though a "low engine power" message appeared afterward. The engine would restart but the problem kept happening multiple times. A mechanic found the oil level was actually empty despite the dashboard showing 40%, and also found transmission and high-pressure fuel pump issues. Even after repairs, the power loss continued occurring. This repair may involve replacing the oil pump, high-pressure fuel pump, transmission fluid and filter, and addressing any engine sensor issues.

Your engine light stays on even after you've replaced parts, and your car keeps shutting off while driving—especially in traffic. You've already spent money replacing the catalytic converter and oxygen sensors, but the problem persists. Since your vehicle has a known recall, you may be able to get repairs done for free through the manufacturer instead of paying out of pocket.

Your engine is jerking and stalling while driving, and makes clicking sounds when idling. Your check engine light is on. A mechanic found that your exhaust camshaft timing is out of sync, your catalytic converter isn't working efficiently, and your evaporator system has a small leak. Your turn signals and speedometer stopped working while you were driving. Your climate control system, including the seat warmers and air temperature/direction controls on your dashboard, stopped working. You discovered there's a recall (Bulletin No. 09298C) for this exact problem, but your vehicle's VIN isn't included in the recall list despite your car matching the affected model range. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the climate control module or repairing connections in the HVAC control panel.
