NHTSA Campaign: 19V017000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2007-2013 X5 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive48i, X5 xDrive50i and X5 M vehicles, 2008-2014 X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i and X6 M vehicles, 2009-2013 X5 xDrive35d vehicles and 2010-2011 X6 ActiveHybrid vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

Risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Fix: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag module, free of charge. The recall began March 14, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Your 2010 BMW X5 has a recall issue (Campaign 23V707000) related to the engine, but the necessary repair parts have been unavailable for an extended period. When you cold-start the vehicle, you've noticed rough idling and abnormal vibrations, along with a check engine warning light. At around 35 MPH, the engine runs rough with unusual sounds coming from under the vehicle, which led you to stop and tow it home. The dealer may need to replace engine components once the recall parts become available.

Your 2010 BMW X5 has a known recall (Campaign 23V707000) for engine problems, but the manufacturer hasn't made the replacement parts available yet, even though significant time has passed. You're experiencing rough idle, a check engine warning light, and oil leaks — the dealer diagnosed failed VANOS bolts and a leaking valve cover gasket. The repair will require replacing the VANOS bolts and valve cover gasket, but your dealer confirmed parts aren't in stock.

Your 2010 BMW X5 is subject to a recall (Campaign 22V119000) for an engine cooling issue, but the required repair parts aren't available yet. You've noticed white smoke coming from under the hood, which suggests a cooling system problem. The dealer has confirmed the parts remain unavailable despite multiple requests. Getting the recall completed will require waiting for BMW to supply and install the necessary engine cooling component.

Your engine started overheating while driving at 40 MPH, with a burning oil or plastic smell coming through the vents. The mechanic identified that your accumulator needs to be replaced, but even after one repair attempt, the overheating problem came back. BMW issued a recall (Campaign 22V119000) for this issue, but the required parts have been unavailable for an extended period. Fixing this will require replacing the engine cooling system accumulator and likely flushing the cooling system.

Your engine has shut off three times in two months while driving on the highway, always after driving for 2+ hours. When it happens, the engine completely loses power with no warning lights or error codes, leaving you without power steering or brakes—a dangerous situation at highway speeds. The engine will crank but won't start until you wait about 30 minutes, then it starts normally with no further problems. Mechanics can't diagnose it because the car runs fine during test drives, but this points to an intermittent electrical or fuel system issue that may require specialized diagnostic equipment to identify the root cause.
