Open Safety Recalls (3)
NHTSA Campaign: 20V024000
Component: AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2011-2019 Corolla, 2011-2013 Matrix, 2012-2018 Avalon, and 2013-2018 Avalon Hybrid vehicles. During certain crashes, the air bag electronic control unit (ECU) may malfunction, possibly disabling the deployment of the air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners.
Risk: In the event of a crash, air bags and/or seat belt pretensioners that do not deploy as intended may increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ECU and install a noise filter between the air bag control module and its wire harness, as necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk beginning March 2, 2020. A second letter notifying owners of the remedy repair will be mailed between March 16, 2020 and June 27, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 20TB03, 20TA03 and 20TA05.
NHTSA Campaign: 19V503000
Component: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Toyota Camry, Corolla, Rav4, Sienna, and Yaris iA vehicles equipped with factory-installed floor mats. The load carrying capacity modification label may be incorrect. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
Risk: An incorrect label may lead to unintentionally overloading the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: SET will notify owners and provide a corrected label for placement over the inaccurate label, free of charge. The recall began August 23, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. SET's number for this recall is SET19A.
NHTSA Campaign: 17V295000

Gulf States Toyota, Inc. (Gulf States) is recalling certain 2017 4Runner , 86, Avalon, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Corolla, Corolla iM, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Prius, Prius C, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Sienna and Yaris vehicles. The spare tire air pressure was not adjusted to the proper pressure as stated on the Tire Pressure Label.
Risk: A spare tire that is not inflated to the proper value may not perform as intended, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Gulf States will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the spare tires, adjusting their pressure as necessary, free of charge. The recall began June 15, 2017. Owners may contact Gulf States customer service at 1-800-444-1074. Toyota's number for this recall is 17R2.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 185)
Air Bags →5 issues
You were hit on your driver's side at approximately 35 MPH in an intersection collision. Despite the severe impact that caused head and body injuries, your airbags failed to deploy, leaving you unprotected and resulting in bruising, head pain, neck and back injuries, and difficulty breathing. The collision was forceful enough to jam both driver-side doors shut and require fire department extraction. Addressing this issue would likely involve a comprehensive airbag system diagnostic and potential replacement of airbag components or the entire airbag control module.

Your vehicle was in a frontal collision with a deer at 35–45 mph that caused severe front-end damage and resulted in the car being totaled. The airbags did not deploy during the crash, even though your vehicle was subject to an unrepaired federal safety recall affecting the airbag control unit. You experienced soreness from the collision. The fix would likely involve having the airbag system inspected and the recalled airbag control unit replaced or repaired by a Toyota dealer.

You were rear-ended at a stoplight by another vehicle, and your airbags failed to deploy even though you sustained serious injuries including broken bones, whiplash, and chest trauma. Six months later, your dealer discovered an open recall (NHTSA Campaign 20V024000) related to airbags and performed repairs, but the manufacturer declined to provide assistance despite opening a case. The airbag system may need to be inspected or replaced to ensure proper deployment in future collisions.

You were in a serious accident while driving, but your airbags did not deploy. You're uncertain whether this happened because of repairs made during a 2020 airbag recall, or because the impact wasn't severe enough to trigger deployment. A technician should inspect your airbag system to determine why it failed to activate during the crash.

You received a recall notice for your airbag system (Campaign 20V024000), but Toyota hasn't been able to get you the replacement part after an unreasonably long wait. You haven't experienced any airbag problems yet, but the manufacturer is aware of the parts shortage issue. The repair will likely involve replacing a faulty airbag component once the part becomes available.

Unknown Or Other →4 issues
Since your vehicle was hit broadside in an accident, you've noticed a shake and hovering noise coming from the front, along with the car pulling hard to the left when accelerating. Your mechanic confirms he can feel and hear these issues but hasn't found the cause, even though your alignment, tires, and suspension were checked. The problem likely stems from hidden damage from the collision that may require a more detailed inspection of the front suspension components, steering components, or frame alignment.

Your car's paint is chipping off on the doors and trunk, affecting both the interior and exterior surfaces. You've reported this issue to Toyota multiple times since 2023, and you're concerned that Toyota may not be aware this is happening on blue Corolla models. Addressing this will likely require a professional paint inspection and possible repainting of the affected panels at a Toyota dealer.

Your 2017 Toyota Corolla's original Blizzard Pearl paint has been peeling in spots across the car despite multiple repair attempts by Toyota (in August 2021 and June 2024). New peeling spots have continued to appear since the last repair, but your local Toyota dealer has refused to fix them since November 2024. Your car is covered under Toyota's paint peeling recall program for 2009-2018 Corollas, which was extended to 14 years to address this manufacturing defect. Resolving this issue may require a complete vehicle repaint rather than spot repairs to prevent the peeling from recurring.

Your car's paint is chipping off in areas. This is a cosmetic issue that doesn't affect how your car drives, but you may want to address it to prevent rust from developing underneath. Fixing this will likely involve sanding the affected areas and repainting them.

Electrical System →2 issues
You discovered that your 2017 Toyota Corolla's odometer reading was incorrect when you purchased it. The dealer showed 100,534 miles at sale, but a Carfax report revealed the actual mileage was 112,085 miles. This mileage discrepancy suggests the odometer may have been tampered with or rolled back. Addressing this will likely require contacting the dealer, your state's consumer protection agency, or an attorney, as this may constitute odometer fraud.

You purchased a 2017 Toyota Corolla as a private sale, but discovered a serious mileage discrepancy when registering the vehicle. The odometer showed 81,456 miles at purchase, but registration records indicated the actual mileage was 257,000 miles — a difference of over 175,000 miles. This suggests the odometer may have been tampered with or rolled back. Resolving this will likely require investigating the vehicle's service history and potentially reporting the issue to your local DMV or law enforcement.

Steering,electrical System,service Brakes →1 issue
While backing out of a parking spot, your steering wheel and brake pedal became extremely stiff and unresponsive. Shifting from Reverse to Drive to Park didn't stop the car from rolling backward, and the transmission didn't respond to gear changes. After turning the engine off and back on, all systems returned to normal operation. This sudden loss of steering, braking, and transmission control creates a serious safety hazard while driving.

Air Bags, forward Collision Avoidance, back Over Prevention →1 issue
Your car's forward collision avoidance system failed to warn you of a vehicle ahead while driving at 15-20 MPH, and you crashed into a bridge wall. The airbags did not deploy during the crash, and you and your passenger were injured. After the crash, your rearview camera stopped working, your front passenger door handle broke off, and your front tire went flat. The manufacturer confirmed that both the rearview camera and forward collision avoidance system had failed. Repairs would likely involve replacing the camera system, collision avoidance system sensors, airbag control modules, and door hardware.

Steering,electrical System →1 issue
Your steering wheel locked up unexpectedly while turning, causing your car to veer sharply left and hit a curb. After restarting, the same locking occurred in a parking lot, and your car lost all electrical power. Your dashboard displayed a steering wheel fault warning, and you were unable to control the steering wheel.

Suspension,service Brakes →1 issue
Your car has a handling and braking problem on the right side that you've noticed while driving. You believe this is a mechanical issue but haven't been able to fully describe it. The problem may involve either the suspension or brake system on the right side of your vehicle. A mechanic will need to inspect the suspension components and brake system on the right side to identify and repair the issue.

Electrical System,air Bags,seat Belts →1 issue
Your airbag and seat belt warning lights turn on when you start your car, even when the passenger seat is empty. This is a safety concern since these systems are designed to protect you in a crash. The dealer couldn't diagnose the issue without a fee, and previous repairs to the airbag, dashboard, seat belt, and wiring harness haven't resolved it. You may need a diagnostic scan to identify an electrical issue in the airbag or seat belt system, possibly related to the wiring harness or seat belt sensors.

Latches/locks/linkages →1 issue
Your driver's side door handle became jammed and wouldn't open from the inside, forcing you to exit through the passenger door. You were able to open the door from outside, but pulling the interior handle multiple times didn't work. The fix will likely involve inspecting and replacing the internal door latch mechanism or the linkage connecting the door handle to the latch.

Visibility →1 issue
Your air conditioning compressor isn't working, which is preventing your windshield defroster from functioning properly. Without the A/C compressor running, the defroster can't remove moisture from your windshield, affecting your visibility. The repair will likely involve replacing or repairing the A/C compressor and checking the refrigerant system.

Engine,forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
When you use cruise control going downhill, your car accelerates to about 8 mph faster than the speed you set, and makes a loud grinding noise while doing this. You've noticed this behavior in your 2017 Corolla but not in other vehicles with cruise control. This may involve inspection or adjustment of the cruise control system and engine components that engage during downhill deceleration.

Service Brakes →1 issue
Your drum brakes don't have inspection holes, which makes it difficult to check the brake pad wear without removing the entire drum. This prevents you from easily monitoring brake condition during routine maintenance. Getting brake drums with inspection holes or having your mechanic remove the drums to inspect the brakes would allow for proper monitoring.
