Your driver's side door handle became jammed and wouldn't open from the inside, forcing you to exit through the passenger door. You were able to open the door from outside, but pulling the interior handle multiple times didn't work. The fix will likely involve inspecting and replacing the internal door latch mechanism or the linkage connecting the door handle to the latch.
