Component: STEERING

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Corolla and Corolla Hybrid vehicles. Due to cracks developed during the manufacturing process, the steering intermediate shaft assembly may fracture and possibly result in the shaft detaching from the steering column.

Risk: A steering shaft that detaches can result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the intermediate steering shaft, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 17, 2025. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 24TB13/24TA13.

Your 2024 Corolla's transmission is experiencing multiple problems including slipping, jerking, surging forward, hesitation when accelerating from a stop, loss of power, unusual droning sounds, knocking noises during idle, delayed gear changes, shuddering when shutting down, and reduced fuel efficiency. You've already spent over $2,000 on diagnostics and rental vehicles, but Toyota says these symptoms are normal and won't cover repairs under warranty. The transmission may need internal inspection, fluid replacement, or potentially a complete transmission rebuild or replacement.

During a routine transmission fluid service on a 2024 Toyota Corolla Hybrid, I discovered that the transmission model (PA10) is completely unlabeled and cannot be identified anywhere under the hood, in the owner’s manual, or on any visible tag. The only label is buried behind the firewall and not reasonably accessible to consumers or technicians.

Your car displayed a Drive Start Control Malfunction warning along with Check Engine and Service Required lights, causing it to barely move forward or reverse with subtle clicking sounds from the engine. Toyota's guidance indicates you should stop driving immediately due to potential loss of control, though your dealer's mechanic found nothing wrong after resetting the computer modules. The dealer cannot guarantee this won't happen again without warning. Addressing this will likely involve diagnostic scanning and possible replacement of transmission control modules or related sensors.

Your steering wheel doesn't fully return to center after turning — it stops about 1/2 to 1 inch off and requires manual correction. Minor steering adjustments stick and don't self-correct smoothly, and at highway speeds this causes the car to drift. You've had multiple alignments and service visits documenting the problem, but Toyota says this is normal; however, Toyota issued a technical service bulletin for 2018 Camry models with an identical issue caused by intermediate shaft binding, suggesting this may be a known defect. The fix would likely involve inspection and possible replacement of the steering intermediate shaft or electric power steering components.

Your car's steering wheel pulls to the right while you're driving on the highway, which feels unsafe and puts you at risk of drifting into roadside ditches. You've taken the car to the dealership twice, but they haven't found anything wrong. The issue may require a wheel alignment check, suspension inspection, or steering component diagnosis to identify what's causing the pull.

Your rear window spontaneously shattered while you were parked in your driveway on a warm afternoon, with no prior damage or incidents. You noticed condensation inside the window two days before it broke, which you found unusual. The dealership refused to investigate the defect since the window was already broken, and all the glass fell into the back seat, creating a safety hazard especially if children or pets were present. The repair will likely require a complete rear window replacement and inspection of the window regulator and seals.

Your rear passenger window suddenly shattered while you were driving in the evening, with no apparent cause or impact. This happened while you were getting out of the vehicle, and you filed a police report about the incident. The window may need to be replaced to restore proper function and weatherproofing.

Your 2024 Corolla experienced dashboard lights (red and blue) flickering on and off along with windows and locks operating unexpectedly. You may have also noticed hesitation when accelerating. Most critically, the vehicle reportedly lost braking ability and went airborne, resulting in a fatal crash. The owner is requesting investigation into whether an electrical or mechanical defect caused the loss of control.

CrashFiled: Dec 2025

While your car was stopped with the brake pedal pressed to shift into park, it suddenly accelerated on its own and hit a parked vehicle ahead of it at 3-4 MPH. Your car was deemed a total loss, though no one was injured and no airbags deployed. The issue may involve the vehicle speed control system or throttle mechanism and will likely require diagnostic testing and potential replacement of speed control components.

CrashFiled: Oct 2025

Your airbags failed to deploy during a rear-end collision on October 3, 2025, and your dashboard displayed an SRS Airbag System malfunction warning. When you took the vehicle to the dealer on October 6, they cleared the fault code and recalibrated the system without your permission, which removed the diagnostic evidence of the failure. The dealer should have documented the malfunction and provided you with a detailed diagnostic report before making any repairs.

CrashFiled: Aug 2025

You were involved in a crash on August 11, 2025, after having a recall service performed in February 2025 for emergency braking and skid control. During the accident, none of the safety systems that were supposed to be repaired worked as expected — the emergency braking didn't engage, the car skidded a long distance, and the airbags didn't deploy despite front sensors being triggered. Your dealership confirmed they completed the recall work, but the repairs appear to have either failed or not been done correctly. This likely requires a complete inspection and re-service of the braking system, collision avoidance system, and airbag deployment sensors.

Your dashboard reflects onto your windshield in certain daylight conditions, creating intense glare that blocks your view of the road, pedestrians, and other vehicles. This reflection occurs when the sun angle and interior lighting combine with your windshield geometry, especially at intersections. The fix may involve applying anti-glare film to the windshield, adjusting dashboard materials, or replacing the windshield with one that has better anti-reflective properties.

Your brake pedal has felt soft and spongy on two separate occasions—once in early September 2025 and again on October 17, 2025. You had the brakes bled at a Toyota dealership on October 13, 2025, but the problem returned. This may indicate an underlying hydraulic brake system issue that needs investigation.

Your car's instrument panel becomes difficult or impossible to read when sunlight reflects off the panel cover during bright, overhead sun conditions—which happens daily in South Florida. This makes it hard to see important driving information like speed and fuel level. The issue may affect your car's forward collision avoidance system visibility as well. Fixing this typically involves replacing or upgrading the instrument panel cover with a non-reflective or anti-glare material.
