Component: STEERING:RACK AND PINION

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2024 Altima vehicles. The bolts connecting the electronic power steering unit to the steering rack may loosen, resulting in a loss of steering control or steering lock-up.

Risk: A loss of steering control or steering lock-up can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the steering gear assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 9, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC997.

Tires2 issues
criticalTIRES
Filed: Sep 2025

Your tires are developing bubbles on the sidewalls, which indicate air is getting trapped between the tire layers. The first tire failed at 20,000 miles, and the other three tires developed the same problem after just 5,000 additional miles. This is a serious safety concern since sidewall bubbles can lead to sudden tire failure while driving. The fix will require replacing all four tires with a new set.

Filed: Dec 2024

Your back passenger tire has a small air leak coming from the sidewall. You may notice the tire losing pressure over time, requiring periodic refilling. The tire will likely need to be replaced rather than repaired due to the location of the leak.

Filed: Jan 2025

While driving on the freeway, your car suddenly stopped accelerating and the Check Engine light came on along with a CVT transmission warning light. Your transmission then stopped working entirely, requiring a tow to the dealership. The dealer has determined the transmission needs to be replaced.

Your car's horn produces a very quiet sound that's difficult to hear, which could be a safety concern in situations where you need to alert other drivers. The horn may not be loud enough to be effective in emergency situations. A horn replacement would likely be needed to fix this issue.

Your steering wheel has become tight and felt like it was locking up, making it difficult to control your car. This has happened three times, and the most recent occurrence resulted in a crash. The steering system may need inspection to identify why it's becoming unresponsive.

Filed: Sep 2025

Your steering wheel vibrates on and off while driving, starting right after you bought the car. The dealership couldn't reproduce the problem during the first visit, but you're concerned this could be related to steering issues reported in other 2024 Altimas. The vibration continues and you want it properly diagnosed and fixed before it becomes unsafe.

Service Brakes,forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
criticalSERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
CrashFiled: Mar 2026

Your 2024 Altima's braking system was improperly assembled at the dealership, with mismatched rear brake pads and one pad installed upside down. This brake failure caused you to lose proper braking capability while driving, resulting in a collision. The problem wasn't caught during the initial purchase inspection or cosmetic repair visit, and only discovered months later at another dealership. The brake system will likely need complete inspection and replacement of the rear brake pads and rotors to ensure proper assembly.

Electrical System1 issue

Filed: Mar 2026

Your driver's seat heater malfunctioned and produced dangerously excessive heat without warning, causing burns to your lower back and buttocks. The heating system had no warning lights or alerts before the problem occurred, making it a sudden safety hazard while driving. Nissan will need to inspect the seat heater assembly and its temperature control components to determine why it overheated.

Filed: Mar 2026

Your moonroof suddenly exploded while you were driving at normal highway speeds in good weather conditions, causing glass to fall throughout the cabin. You've also experienced multiple tire failures from potholes over the past year and felt the tires were inadequate and unsafe. The repair will likely involve replacing the moonroof assembly and possibly the tires with a more durable option.

Your 2024 Nissan Altima developed a mold odor immediately after purchase with only 25 miles on the odometer. Water was discovered leaking into the trunk area due to defective weatherstripping or sealing, and despite multiple dealer visits and repair attempts, the vehicle returned to you with visible mold contamination—a professional inspection later found over 100,000 mold spores and at least 10 different types of mold inside. The vehicle remains unsafe and inoperable due to persistent mold, even after the water intrusion source was reportedly repaired. The repair will likely require complete mold remediation, replacement of weatherstripping and seals, and thorough cabin decontamination.

Filed: Jan 2026

Your 2024 Nissan Altima stalled while driving at 45 mph in cold, snowy weather with about 13,000 miles on it. The engine shut off completely, all dashboard warning lights came on, and the brakes became difficult to push—creating a dangerous situation with traffic behind you. The car restarted after coasting to about 20 mph, and you took it to a dealership for diagnosis and repair.

CrashFiled: Dec 2025

Your car unexpectedly accelerated downhill and your brakes did not respond, causing it to crash into a hillside. This happened twice — once in a rented 2023 Sentra and again in your 2024 Altima — both times in the same location on a steep hill, suggesting a possible mechanical failure with the braking or engine control system. The fix will likely require a complete diagnostic inspection of your brake system and engine throttle controls to identify what's causing the unintended acceleration.

FireFiled: Sep 2025

While driving on the freeway, you noticed smoke coming from under the hood and pulled over safely. A fire started under the hood, though the exact cause isn't yet identified. This requires immediate professional inspection to determine what caused the fire and to ensure it's completely extinguished and safe to drive.

Air Bags1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS
CrashFiled: May 2025

Your 2024 Nissan Altima was involved in a severe collision at approximately 20 mph when struck by another vehicle traveling at 80+ mph, totaling the car. Despite the significant impact, none of the airbags deployed—not the front airbags or side curtain airbags—even though both occupants were wearing seatbelts. There were no warning lights or prior issues with the airbag system before the crash. The airbag system may need to be inspected by Nissan to determine why the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) failed to deploy during this major accident.

Your backup camera displays unreliably—it sometimes goes blank or shows a pink or orange tint instead of a normal image. The camera works intermittently, so you can't depend on it to show you what's behind your car when backing up. The issue likely involves a faulty camera lens, connector, or the camera module itself that will need inspection or replacement.

Water is leaking into your car through the driver's side door area when parked. Your dealer found the leak comes from the driver's rear seat area near the seat belt and possibly a door weld, causing water to pool on the carpet. Even after replacing the carpet, front spacer, and trim assembly, the water leaking problem has continued. The manufacturer has been notified about this ongoing issue.

When you start your car, the engine revs high and stays above 2,000 RPM for over a minute before dropping to idle—longer than normal. When you shift into Drive, the car lurches hard and sometimes feels like it almost skids or slides, making acceleration unpredictable. The steering also feels like it's skipping or stuttering when backing up. These issues don't happen every time but occur frequently enough to feel unsafe.

Your rear seatbelt warning system keeps beeping and showing an unbuckled warning even when no one is sitting in the back seat and there's nothing back there. This started about 2 months ago and creates a distraction while you're driving. The issue likely involves a faulty sensor or occupant detection system that needs to be inspected and possibly replaced.
