NHTSA Campaign: 21V138000
Component: STEERING:LINKAGES:TIE ROD ASSEMBLY
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Nissan Altima vehicles. The tie rod ball joint fastener was not tightened properly, which could result in the tie rod ball joint detaching from the steering knuckle.
Risk: A detached tie rod ball joint can cause a loss of steering control, and increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will tighten the left and right-side tie rod ball joint fasteners, or install new fasteners as necessary, free of charge. The began March 31, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7769. Nissan's number for this recall is PC795.
NHTSA Campaign: 23V628000
Component: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Altima and 2020-2021 Sentra vehicles. Damage to the camera harness can cause distortion or loss of the rearview camera display image. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Risk: A rearview camera that does not properly display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will inspect the rearview camera and harness for damage and replace them as necessary. If no damage is found, the dealer will apply protective tape and reroute the rearview camera harness. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed October 19, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R23C3.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 56)
Electrical System →3 issues
Your key fob and electric door locks don't work, and you've had to replace the door actuators on multiple doors (rear passenger, rear driver's side, and driver's side). You mention this is a safety concern because you can't access your vehicle in an emergency. You've found that other 2021 Nissan Altima owners have reported the same issue. The repair is expensive and may involve replacing faulty door lock actuators or addressing the electrical control system.

You discovered a mileage discrepancy on your 2021 Nissan Altima after purchase. The odometer showed 35,189 miles when you bought it from the dealer, but when you went to register it, the actual mileage was found to be 65,543 miles. This suggests the odometer reading may have been tampered with or incorrectly displayed at the time of sale. You'll likely need to contact the dealer and potentially pursue legal action or request a refund based on odometer fraud.

Your backup camera has become progressively darker over the past month and now displays glitches with lines, freezes, or goes completely black. You've researched and found that 2021 Nissan Altima backup cameras have been subject to recalls in the past, though your specific vehicle hasn't been included. Since this is a known model issue and affects your safety when backing up, you believe this should be recalled and repaired at no cost to you.

Forward Collision Avoidance →2 issues
Your car's braking system is applying the brakes suddenly and forcefully on its own while you're driving, even on highways, without any input from you and without warning. This has been happening repeatedly since 2021 despite multiple visits to authorized Nissan dealerships, creating a serious risk of being rear-ended or losing control of the vehicle. The fix will likely require Nissan to diagnose and repair the forward collision avoidance system and/or braking system components that are causing the unintended brake engagement.

Your Altima's Automatic Emergency Braking system malfunctions frequently because the front radar sensor gets easily blocked by dirt or weather, causing it to falsely detect obstacles and slam on the brakes when the road is clear. This sudden braking can cause other vehicles to rear-end you, and you've had to disable the safety feature entirely to avoid these false stops. Nissan has acknowledged the issue but offers no permanent solution or recall.

Your door locks have stopped working automatically. The passenger rear lock failed first, followed by the driver's rear lock, and now both front locks won't lock or unlock when you use the buttons. This could be a serious safety issue if you need to quickly exit or enter your vehicle in an emergency. The problem likely involves the door lock actuators or the electrical module controlling them, and may require diagnosis and replacement of the faulty components.

Your car's radio volume suddenly spikes to maximum level on its own, and you can't control it using the volume knob or turn the radio off—this has happened multiple times. The Nissan dealer diagnosed a failure in the audio/video control unit and says it needs to be replaced for about $2,000. When the volume blasts unexpectedly, you're distracted trying to shut it off while driving, creating a safety concern. The fix will involve replacing the faulty A/V control unit.
