NHTSA Campaign: 03V455000

Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE CIRCUIT BOARD FOR THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR OR CAM POSITION SENSOR MAY HAVE AN IMPROPER SOLDER JOINT DUE TO SOLDER DEFORMATION CAUSED BY HEAT STRESS ACCELERATED BY THE EXISTENCE OF FLUX RESIDUE DURING THE SOLDERING PROCESS.

Risk: THIS COULD CAUSE THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" WARNING LIGHT TO COME ON, CREATE A NO START CONDITION, CAUSE REDUCED ENGINE POWER, OR CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING WITHOUT WARNING DURING VEHICLE OPERATION, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CRANK POSITION SENSORS. CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR(S), AND IN SOME CASES, THE VARIABLE TIMING CONTROL SENSOR(S). VEHICLES INVOLVED IN A PREVIOUS RECALL CAMPAIGN, 01V357, ARE ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS NEW CAMPAIGN. THE REPLACEMENT SENSORS USED IN THAT CAMPAIGN ARE ALSO AFFECTED. NHTSA Campaign: 06V242000

Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.5L ENGINE, THE CRANK ANGLE SENSOR IS AFFECTED BY TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS. UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS, THESE VARIATIONS IN TEMPERATURE CAN BE LARGE ENOUGH TO CAUSE A BRIEF INTERRUPTION IN THE SIGNAL OUTPUT FROM THE SENSOR.

Risk: IF THE INTERRUPTION IN THE SIGNAL FROM THE SENSOR IS SO BRIEF THAT THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM) LOGIC DOES NOT HAVE TIME TO DIAGNOSE THE CONDITION, THE ENGINE MAY STOP RUNNING WITHOUT WARNING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AT A LOW SPEED INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ECM FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 21, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:MANIFOLD/HEADER/MUFFLER/TAIL PIPE

ON CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE 2.5 LITER ENGINE, THE EXHAUST PIPE HANGER PIN MAY CATCH DEBRIS FROM THE ROAD THAT COULD BE IGNITED BY CONTACT WITH THE MAIN CATALYST. ALSO ON 2002 ALTIMA AND SENTRA VEHICLES, CERTAIN ENGINE OPERATING CONDITIONS MAY CAUSE THE PRE-CATALYST TO OVERHEAT AND DAMAGE THE CATALYST SUBSTRATE.

Risk: EITHER OF THESE TWO CONDITIONS COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE PROTRUDING PORTION OF THE EXHAUST PIPE HANGER PIN. IN ADDITION TO THE CORRECTIVE ACTION, IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE IN THE EVENT OF POOR OR IMPROPER MAINTENANCE THAT COULD RESULT IN OIL SPILLAGE, HEAT SHIELD(S) WILL BE INSTALLED ON THE PRE-CATALYST AND EXHAUST TUBE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON JULY 28, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261. NISSAN RECALL NOS. R3007, R3014, R3015, R3016, R3017. ALSO ON 2002 ALTIMA AND SENTRA VEHICLES, CERTAIN ENGINE OPERATING CONDITIONS MAY CAUSE THE PRE-CATALYST TO OVERHEAT AND DAMAGE THE CATALYST SUBSTRATE. IF SUBSTRATE PARTICLES ENTER THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER, THEY COULD SCORE THE CYLINDER WALLS, RESULTING IN INCREASED OIL CONSUMPTION. IF THE ENGINE OIL LEVEL IS NOT CHECKED ON A PERIODIC BASIS AND DROPS BELOW THE LOW LEVEL, AND THE DRIVER CONTINUES TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE IGNORING NOTICEABLE ENGINE NOISE, ENGINE DAMAGE MAY OCCUR WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FIRE. THE PRE-CATALYST WILL BE TESTED TO ENSURE IT IS WORKING PROPERLY AND REPLACED IF NECESSARY. IF DAMAGE IS FOUND INSIDE THE PRE-CATALYST, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE ENGINE.

While driving at 45 mph, your engine suddenly seized and shut down completely, and the car wouldn't restart. You also heard an abnormal wrapping noise from the engine before it failed. The vehicle was towed home, and the dealership declined to diagnose or repair it, though your car may be covered under a recall. A full engine inspection or replacement may be necessary to determine what caused the seizure.

Your check engine light came on while driving at various speeds, and you noticed a strange smell from the exhaust. A mechanic replaced both front and rear catalytic converters and the oxygen sensors, but the problem came back. The dealership checked your vehicle's VIN against recalls but found it wasn't covered, even though a similar recall exists for this model year. Fixing this issue will likely require further diagnosis and possible replacement of the catalytic converters and oxygen sensors again.

criticalFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Jun 2022

Your 2003 Altima's engine won't start, and when it does start, it may shut off while you're driving in traffic. This creates a safety risk because another vehicle could hit you if your engine dies on the road. Nissan has confirmed there's an open recall campaign for your vehicle's fuel pump screen, but your dealership is refusing to inspect or service the car.

Your sunroof unexpectedly detached from your vehicle while you were driving at highway speeds (65-75 MPH). This happened at around 177,000 miles, with no warning lights or prior indication of a problem. The manufacturer was notified but did not provide assistance. Repairing this issue will likely involve replacing the sunroof assembly and inspecting the mounting hardware and frame for damage.

Filed: Mar 2021

Your car shuts off while driving, and your mechanic found a faulty plastic clip on the cam sensor (which was previously replaced). Additionally, your transmission gets stuck in low gear while driving, forcing you to pull over and restart the car to reset it—otherwise the engine runs at high RPMs in low gear. The dealer says there are recalls for these sensors on other Altima model years, but not yours. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the cam sensor and its mounting clip, and diagnosing the transmission shift problem.

Filed: Dec 2018

Your Nissan has a safety recall that can cause the engine to stop running without warning while you're driving, which could result in a crash. The dealership has refused to complete the recall because a specific diagnostic code hasn't appeared yet, even though the service staff have experienced the problem firsthand. Nissan corporate is telling you to keep driving the car until the code shows up, but you're uncomfortable doing this with a child in the vehicle. You want the recall completed as originally promised.

NHTSA #: 11155324
Vehicle Speed Control, unknown Or Other,engine1 issue
highVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
Filed: Mar 2022

Your car's crankshaft and camshaft sensors may be faulty, which can affect engine performance and speed control. These sensors help your engine run properly, and if they're not working correctly, you might notice issues with how your car drives. Fixing this will likely involve replacing one or both of these sensors.

NHTSA #: 11458058
Fuel System, Gasoline,structure1 issue
highFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,STRUCTURE
Filed: Aug 2021

Your 2003 Altima has developed rust on the front driver's side floor pan, and the floorboard in that area feels soft when touched. You may notice a fuel smell while driving at various speeds. This combination of rust, soft flooring, and fuel odor suggests a potential fuel system leak or corrosion issue that needs inspection. A mechanic will need to examine the fuel lines, connections, and floor pan to identify and seal any leaks.

NHTSA #: 11430278
Steering,engine1 issue
highSTEERING,ENGINE
Filed: Jul 2020

Your car stalled while you were driving at 55 mph, with the service engine light coming on. When this happened, your steering wheel became hard to turn, making it difficult to safely maneuver to the shoulder. The car restarted on its own after about 10 minutes and ran normally, but this problem has happened again several times since then. The dealership wasn't able to diagnose or fix the issue. The problem may be related to an engine cooling system issue covered under a recall, so having a mechanic check your engine control system and cooling components could help identify the root cause.

NHTSA #: 11337735
Suspension,structure,unknown Or Other1 issue
highSUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Apr 2020

Your exhaust system hangs so low that it scrapes the ground on every bump, even at slow speeds, leaving yellow marks on the undercarriage from repeated contact with speed bumps. Additionally, the door handles on both the driver and passenger sides are breaking off when you try to open the doors. The suspension may be sagging, which could be contributing to how low the car is sitting.

Filed: Mar 2020

Your engine overheats while driving, and when you turn on the heater, your car loses power at both high and low speeds. Your battery also drains quickly when the car is off and dies during normal driving.

Engine,fuel/propulsion System1 issue
highENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Jun 2019

Your car is randomly shutting off while idling, though it restarts after a few seconds. This is happening frequently enough to be concerning. The issue may be related to a Takata recall, and a mechanic will need to diagnose whether it's a fuel system problem, ignition issue, or recall-related defect.

NHTSA #: 11217346
Unknown Or Other,engine,fuel/propulsion System1 issue
highUNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Dec 2018

Your 2003 Altima has multiple unresolved issues: the engine loses power while driving on the highway, your headlights flicker on and off, the fuel gauge reading fluctuates, and the car uses gas much faster than normal. After a dealer reprogrammed your engine computer and performed an idle air volume learning procedure, your check engine light came back on within two days. The dealer is now charging you $140 for diagnostics rather than investigating the 10 recalls listed for your vehicle. Resolving these issues may involve diagnosing the engine power loss, electrical system problems with the headlights, fuel gauge sensor malfunction, and fuel consumption issues.

NHTSA #: 11156788
Exterior Lighting1 issue
highEXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: Aug 2018

Your low beam headlights turned off unexpectedly while driving at night, forcing you to use high beams to see the road. This happened multiple times. The dealer said your car wasn't covered under a recall for this issue. The problem may involve a faulty headlight switch, wiring issue, or electrical connection that needs to be diagnosed and repaired.
