HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 188,282 MY 2001-2004 SONATA AND MY 2001-2004 XG300 AND XG350 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ROAD SALT APPLIED IN THESE JURISDICTIONS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS MAY RESULT IN PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME ON THE VEHICLES, AND MAY RESULT IN THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE SUB-FRAME STEEL. THE CORROSION IS FREQUENTLY VISIBLE AND OFTEN DISCOVERED DURING INSPECTION OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AND OWNERS MAY ALSO HEAR NOISES OR NOTICE TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. IF THESE SIGNALS ARE UNDETECTED OR UNHEEDED, THE CORROSION MAY PROGRESS AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY DETACH FROM THE SUB-FRAME.
Risk: IF THAT HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE MAY LOSE DRIVE POWER TO THE WHEELS, AND THE FRONT WHEEL MAY MAKE CONTACT WITH THE FENDER OR WHEEL WELL, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL MEASURE THE THICKNESS OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME AND INSPECT THE FRONT SUB-FRAME FOR CORROSION DAMAGE AND, IF NECESSARY, THE FRONT SUB-FRAME WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW SUB-FRAME THAT INCORPORATES ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER PANELS. IF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME DOES NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT, THE DEALER WILL ADD DRAINAGE HOLES TO THE SUB-FRAME AND WILL TREAT THE SUB-FRAME WITH RUST-PROOFING MATERIAL TO STOP THE CORROSION PROCESS. THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.
NHTSA Campaign: 00V259001
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SOME SONATA VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.5 LITER V-6 ENGINES AND ALL ELANTRA MODEL VEHICLES MAY HAVE EXPERIENCED INTERMITTENT LOW-SPEED ENGINE STALLING, WHICH COULD OCCUR IF THE MAF (MASS AIR FLOW) SENSOR ELECTRICAL SIGNAL IS INTERRUPTED AS A RESULT OF ENGINE VIBRATION TRANSMITTED TO THE MAF SENSOR CONNECTOR WIRING HARNESS.
Risk: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL RE-ROUTE THE MAF SENSOR CONNECTOR WIRING HARNESS.
NHTSA Campaign: 01V347000
Component: AIR BAGS
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT COULD ILLUMINATE DUE TO MOTION OF THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS AND SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR THAT MOUNT TO THE ADJUSTABLE SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY. THIS CONDITION ONLY RELATES TO THE DRIVER AND/OR PASSENGER SEAT-MOUNTED SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG(S).
Risk: THIS CONDITION COULD PREVENT SEAT MOUNTED SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT DURING AN ACCIDENT WHERE SUCH DEPLOYMENT SHOULD OCCUR. NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE SRS SIDE IMPACT AIR BAGS COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY DURING AN ACCIDENT WHERE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT IS INTENDED.
Fix: DEALERS WILL MORE SECURELY FASTEN THE FRONT SEAT SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS AND CONNECTORS TO THE VEHICLE'S FRONT SEAT CUSHION FRAMES. OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL OCCUR IN SIX MAILINGS ON MAY 27, JUNE 3, JUNE 10, JUNE 17, JUNE 24, AND JULY 1, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.
NHTSA Campaign: 02V105000
Component: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION THAT LEADS TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATION COULD RESULT FROM MOTION OF THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS AND SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR WHICH MOUNT TO THE ADJUSTABLE SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY. THIS CONDITION ONLY RELATES TO THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAGS AND COULD PREVENT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT DURING A CRASH WHERE SUCH DEPLOYMENT SHOULD OCCUR.
Risk: NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE SRS SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY DURING A SIDE IMPACT CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL MORE SECURELY FASTEN THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESSES AND CONNECTORS TO THE VEHICLE'S FRONT SEAT CUSHION FRAMES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MAY 28, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

Your car's sub-frame (K-frame) rusted completely through, causing both rear tires to angle outward and nearly separate from the vehicle while also damaging the left control arm. You heard a loud pop and discovered your steering wheel was turned 180 degrees, forcing you to drive home at 10 mph with a burning rubber smell. The sub-frame will need to be replaced or welded, and the suspension components will need inspection and repair.

While driving slowly out of a parking space at 5 mph, your engine cradle fell down, which broke the control arm and damaged the axle. This caused your steering wheel to only move right, and when you shifted into reverse, the car also moved only to the right. You noticed the axle bushing, CV boot, and grease on the ground. A mechanic found that corrosion on the engine cradle caused it to fail and drop. Repair will require replacing the corroded engine cradle, control arm, axle, and related suspension components.

Your car's lower control arm separated from the frame on the front passenger side while turning a corner, which damaged a new tire and fender. This is a serious structural failure that could cause loss of control while driving. The control arm will need to be reattached to the frame and inspected for damage, and the tire and fender will need to be replaced.

Your car's motor cradle (the metal support structure that holds the engine) has rusted through and needs to be replaced. The shop discovered this during a routine oil change. This appears to be a common issue with this model year. Replacing the motor cradle is a major structural repair that requires removing the engine and installing a new support frame.

While braking at 35 mph, you heard a loud popping noise and experienced a sudden loss of steering control — requiring excessive force to keep the car from spinning in circles. When you arrived at your destination, you noticed the front passenger tire was tilted inward. A technician found that the front sub-frame and connecting parts were severely corroded. The repair involves replacing the sub-frame cross member, which may require welding or complete structural replacement.

While driving at 35 mph, you heard noises and felt your steering wheel pulling to one side, with your tires appearing misaligned. A mechanic found that your front sub-frame was heavily rusted and corroded, with holes forming around the bolts that hold it in place. Although there was a recall issued for this suspension failure, your vehicle's VIN was not included in it, and the manufacturer confirmed your car is not covered.

Your 1999 Hyundai Sonata's front sub-frame has corroded, which was discovered during an inspection at an independent repair shop. Hyundai confirmed your vehicle is not covered under recall campaign 09V124000 for suspension issues, so the problem was not repaired by the manufacturer. Fixing this will likely involve inspection and replacement of the corroded sub-frame components.

Your car started pulling to the right while driving. When you inspected the right front wheel assembly, you discovered it had come loose from the frame because the frame had rusted through on three of four sides. This loose attachment created a serious safety risk that could have caused a severe accident if it had separated completely. The repair will likely involve replacing the rusted frame section and re-securing the wheel assembly attachment.

Your airbag warning light came on, indicating a problem with the airbag system. A dealer performed recall work and claimed to have replaced your airbags and added related components, but eight years later when the light came on again, a second dealer discovered your car actually had no airbags installed — despite paperwork showing they were replaced. You drove your vehicle unsafely for eight years without functional airbags. The repair will require properly installing new airbag assemblies and ensuring the airbag control module is functioning correctly.

Steering,suspension,structure →1 issue
When you removed your front wheel, you discovered severe rust on the control arm attachment point and a cracked subframe that's at risk of breaking. The underlying issue is a design defect where water gets trapped in the subframe and causes rust, which has weakened the structural integrity over about 14-15 years. Your steering wheel was noticeably out of position and both front wheels were leaning inward at the top, signs that the control arm is separating from the frame. A complete control arm separation at highway speeds could cause loss of steering control, so the subframe and suspension components need immediate inspection and replacement.

Steering,suspension,service Brakes, Hydraulic,engine And Engine Cooling,power Train,air Bags,structure,tires →1 issue
Your 1999 Sonata has experienced multiple serious issues including a severely melted crankshaft sensor, transmission problems, ABS and airbag warning lights, worn half shafts, tires, and brakes. Most critically, the subframe has corroded severely—your mechanic has advised against driving the car at all due to safety concerns, particularly in winter conditions. The subframe corrosion could potentially cause structural failure, putting you and your passengers at risk of accident or injury. Fixing this will likely require complete subframe replacement or major structural repair.

Steering, engine And Engine Cooling →1 issue
After a recall repair on your suspension, your engine became excessively loud and your motor mounts were found to be loose and fractured. Your vehicle would sway back and forth while driving, the engine would jump abnormally, and your steering would intermittently become hard. While driving at 40 mph, the rear of your vehicle swayed abnormally and was hit by another vehicle; two passengers were injured. The dealer identified a fractured motor mount but did not repair it. Fixing this issue would likely involve replacing the motor mounts and having the steering system inspected.
