NHTSA Campaign: 20V026000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.

Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.

Fix: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.

CrashFiled: Apr 2023

Your airbags failed to deploy during a car accident, leaving you unprotected and resulting in a fractured sternum when your chest hit the steering wheel. This is a serious safety failure that should have prevented or reduced injury. The airbag system will need complete diagnostic testing and likely replacement of the airbag control module and sensors.

NHTSA #: 11518051
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Dec 2021

You were told your car had a pending airbag recall and scheduled a dealer appointment to have it fixed. After the service, the dealer gave you paperwork claiming the recall was completed, but you inspected the passenger airbag and found it didn't look new—suggesting it wasn't actually replaced. You believe neither the driver nor passenger airbag was replaced despite the paperwork indicating otherwise. Resolving this would likely require an independent inspection of both airbags and potentially having them replaced by a certified technician if the original service wasn't performed.

NHTSA #: 11445149

CrashFiled: Feb 2021

Your airbags failed to deploy during a collision at 45 mph, resulting in serious injuries including two fractured ribs, a shoulder injury, and a concussion from impact with the steering wheel. The vehicle was declared a total loss by insurance. Diagnosing airbag failure typically requires a mechanic to scan the airbag control module for fault codes and inspect the airbag system wiring and sensors.

Your car's airbag inflator part is not available from Honda, according to multiple calls to your local dealer. This means if your airbag needs to deploy, it may not function properly. You'll need to contact Honda directly or explore alternative repair options, which may involve ordering a replacement airbag inflator assembly or having a technician source the part from another supplier.

Your 1999 Honda Civic has an airbag safety recall, but the dealer was unable to complete the repair. You requested that the airbag be disconnected instead. You received a recall notice for your 1999 Honda Civic's airbags, but the dealer has been unable to get the required parts to complete the repair. You've been waiting longer than a reasonable amount of time for the fix, and both the dealer and manufacturer have confirmed the parts are currently unavailable. Your 1999 Honda Civic is under a recall for Takata airbags (NHTSA campaign 20V026000), but the replacement parts aren't currently available. Your 1999 Honda Civic is subject to a Takata airbag recall (NHTSA Campaign 20V026000), but the replacement parts needed to fix it are not currently available. The manufacturer told you parts won't be in stock until March 2021, and you feel the delay is unreasonably long. Your 1999 Honda Civic is excluded from a previous air bag recall, and you're concerned about whether your air bags are actually safe. While no crash or fire has occurred, you're worried about potential air bag failure. A dealer inspection of your air bag system and review of your specific vehicle's recall history can help determine if any safety issues apply to your model.

Your airbag warning light stays on continuously. This indicates a problem with your airbag system that needs diagnosis. A technician will need to scan your vehicle's computer to identify the specific fault—which could range from a faulty sensor to a wiring issue to an actual airbag component problem. The repair will depend on what the diagnostic scan reveals.

criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
Filed: Apr 2022

While driving on the highway, your engine suddenly shut off and you lost all electrical power. Your car wouldn't start and the electric windows stopped working. After waiting about 30 minutes on the shoulder, the engine started again and you were able to drive home on city streets. This suggests a serious electrical or engine control issue that needs diagnosis before driving again.

Filed: Jun 2021

Your air conditioning system stopped working and you noticed a smell of smoke coming from the unit. This suggests an electrical or mechanical failure in the AC system that may have caused overheating. A mechanic should inspect the AC compressor, electrical connections, and refrigerant lines to identify the source of the smoke smell and determine what repairs are needed.

Your engine is shutting off unexpectedly while you're driving, then restarting after a few minutes—but it may stall again right after. This is happening more and more often, starting as rarely as once every few months but now occurring every few days, at any time of day and at any speed. The problem likely involves your ignition system, fuel delivery, or engine sensors, and may require diagnosis with a scanner to identify the faulty component.

Filed: Jan 2020

Your ignition switch is loose, which can cause your engine to shut off unexpectedly while you're driving. This is a serious safety hazard because you could lose power steering and brakes, making it difficult to control the car. The fix will likely involve replacing or tightening the ignition switch assembly.

Filed: Aug 2023

Your car's electrical system is shutting down without warning while driving at low speeds, forcing you to pull over and restart the vehicle. This problem happens repeatedly, and your instrument panel lights don't illuminate when you start the car. A mechanic found that the ignition switch has corroded contacts, which is causing the electrical failures. Replacing the ignition switch should fix the problem.

You can open the doors from the inside (except the driver's door, which won't open at all from either side), but the outside handles don't respond. Filed: Jan 2020

Your car stalled suddenly while driving at 60-70 mph, but you were able to restart it after about three minutes. The dealership was unable to diagnose or fix the problem. This happened at around 144,000 miles on your 1999 Honda Civic.

Filed: Jul 2019

Your Cooper GLS Touring tires developed multiple serious problems over time. The driver's side rear tire developed slow leaks that were repeatedly patched but kept returning, eventually failing completely while parked. Later, the front driver's side tire suddenly went flat while you were driving on the highway, and a third tire was found to have an internal belt defect. The issues suggest a possible manufacturing defect affecting multiple tires from this set. You may need to have the remaining tires inspected by a professional or replaced with a different brand.
