Risk: A melted fuel tank can leak, increasing the risk of a fire.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the check valve. The fuel tank assembly will be inspected for damage and replaced if necessary. Additionally, dealers will inspect and update the engine control unit software. All repairs will be performed as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning March 13, 2026. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 286. Filed: Jan 2026

Your 2022 Hyundai Sonata had a recalled fuel tank that was serviced at a dealership. Several months after the recall repair was completed, your fuel tank ruptured and caused severe damage to the vehicle. This suggests the recall repair may not have properly resolved the underlying fuel tank defect.

Your car's check engine light came on in November 2024 for a cylinder 2 misfire and fuel mixture problem. The dealership replaced a cracked fuel injector, but the same misfire returned less than a year later in September 2025. Now your car shakes violently when you accelerate and stalls at stop lights, creating a serious safety risk. The repair will likely involve replacing the fuel injector again or diagnosing why the same cylinder keeps misfiring.

Your 2022 Sonata has required fuel injector replacement twice in three years. Most recently, your car became very sluggish, couldn't exceed 20 mph, smelled like gasoline, and shook slightly — requiring a tow to the dealer for another fuel injector replacement. The issue appears to be recurring with this vehicle. Fixing this will involve replacing the fuel injectors, which deliver fuel to your engine's cylinders.

After 6 hours of highway driving, your car began shaking, wouldn't accelerate normally, and emitted a burning smell. The dealership diagnosed a failed fuel injector and high-pressure fuel rail at just 4,100 miles. The fix will involve replacing both the fuel injector and high-pressure fuel rail components.

Your fuel tank has swollen or expanded, which has caused damage to the vehicle's frame. This structural damage may affect the integrity of your car and should be inspected by a professional. The repair will likely involve replacing the fuel tank and assessing/repairing any frame damage caused by the expansion.

Your check engine light came on, and the dealer found a problem with your fuel tank that they wanted to charge you $3,500 to replace. However, you discovered there's a recall covering this exact fuel tank issue on Hyundai Sonatas, which the dealer should have applied at no cost. The dealer initially refused to acknowledge the recall and suggested you file a false insurance claim, then later warned the vehicle could be dangerous to drive. You were able to have the repair done for free at another dealership under the recall. Resolving this will involve the dealer honoring the manufacturer's fuel tank recall and potentially addressing the questionable service practices.

Your car's engine may suddenly lose power and fail to accelerate when you press the gas pedal. This problem has been linked to a fuel system issue that Hyundai is aware of (NHTSA Campaign 25V796000), but your dealer may not have completed the repair yet. You should contact Hyundai directly to ensure the fuel system components are inspected and replaced if necessary.

Your 2022 Sonata experienced unexpected engine revving and jerking while idling and driving at various speeds, with ABS, traction control, and warning lights turning on, plus a message saying "Front Collision Avoidance Deactivated." Your dealer replaced a valve and gasket, but couldn't complete the required recall repair because the needed part wasn't available yet. You're concerned about a potential fire risk and feel the recall is taking too long to be addressed.

Your 2022 Sonata has been stalling while driving at various speeds and failing to restart, leaving you stranded. You've had the spark plugs replaced and taken your car to the dealer multiple times, but the problem keeps getting worse. Hyundai has notified you of a recall (Campaign 25V796000) related to the fuel system, but the repair part isn't available yet — they've indicated this is likely the root cause of your stalling issue. The fix will involve installing the recalled fuel system component once it becomes available.

After nearly 3 months of normal operation, your car's engine suddenly started running rough on the way home from church. The engine barely ran, smelled like gasoline, and produced white smoke. The dealer has had the car for 3 weeks investigating injector issues and expects it will take over another week for Hyundai to provide guidance on the repair.

Your car's engine suddenly jerked violently and shut off while driving on the highway at 75 mph, and it wouldn't restart—Hyundai replaced all four fuel injectors under warranty to fix it. Now at 56,400 miles, your car is jerking again at low speeds and getting poor gas mileage, suggesting the fuel injectors may be failing again. The repair will likely involve replacing the fuel injectors once more, as they appear to be the root cause of the issue.

Vehicle Speed Control1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
CrashFiled: Jan 2026

Your car has experienced sudden, unintended acceleration on two separate occasions — once in June 2024 during a three-point turn (hitting a fire hydrant), and again recently while parking slowly at church (going over a parking block onto grass and sidewalk). In both cases, the acceleration happened immediately after you lifted your foot from the brake, causing significant damage. The issue appears to be a defect in the vehicle speed control system that occurs without warning.

criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
Filed: Oct 2025

Your car is experiencing unexpected acceleration at low speeds (around 20-25 mph) where the engine RPMs suddenly rev and the car accelerates on its own, then the brakes automatically engage. This has happened twice on residential roads and is particularly dangerous because it occurred when another vehicle was in front of you. The issue appears to involve a malfunction in either the cruise control system, engine management, or brake system that requires immediate diagnostic inspection at a dealership.

Forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
highFORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Filed: Mar 2026

Your car's automatic emergency braking system has activated unexpectedly three times without any apparent reason, most recently after your warranty expired. Each time this happened during clear daytime conditions, the brakes engaged briefly, which could potentially cause a rear-end collision if another vehicle was following closely. Your dealer found no recalls or explanation for the issue and suggested documenting the circumstances if it happens again. Addressing this will likely require a diagnostic scan of the forward collision avoidance system and possibly replacement of the camera or radar sensors that control automatic braking.

Filed: Feb 2026

Your windshield cracked twice in four months without any noticeable impact or obvious cause, and you believe the glass is too thin for highway driving. This affects your visibility and may impact safety systems that are connected to or mounted on the windshield. Your dealer has already replaced the windshield once, but the problem occurred again.

You've noticed puddles forming under or near your rear side door and tire area, along with a strong gas smell after filling up your tank. You're also getting noticeably lower gas mileage than usual, even though your driving habits haven't changed. These symptoms together suggest a possible fuel leak somewhere in the fuel system that needs inspection.

Filed: Jan 2026

Your 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid started blowing white smoke from the exhaust. The dealership diagnosed a failed valve that controls antifreeze, which is leaking coolant into the exhaust and causing the engine to overheat. You were quoted $2,659 for the repair, but the dealership said it's not covered under warranty because your car has 83,000 miles and the basic warranty ended at 80,000 miles.

Your car's 12-volt battery drains completely after just a few days of sitting unused, even though no lights are left on and no aftermarket accessories are connected. The dealership replaced the battery once, but the problem continued—now it takes about five days instead of three for the battery to fully drain. When the battery dies, you can only unlock and start the car using the emergency key, and the battery reset button rarely works to restore power.
