Jul 2024

NHTSA Campaign: 24V583000

Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2024 Hyundai Sonata vehicles. The software for the brake lights may cause the brake lights to flash and not illuminate properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Risk: Flashing brake lights may cause confusion for other drivers on the road, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the rear brake light software, free of charge. Additionally, Hyundai will release the software update over-the-air (OTA). Owner notification letters were mailed September 12, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 267.

Your car is completely shutting down while driving, causing all lights (headlights and interior lights) and systems to go dark. When this happens, your car is still rolling and you have to pull over while everything reboots. The car also incorrectly shows a seatbelt warning, requiring you to unbuckle and rebuckle all seatbelts before it clears. This complete power loss creates a serious safety hazard for you, your passengers, and other drivers due to lost visibility, and it's happening repeatedly.

Your HVAC system isn't working properly—the air conditioning turns on even when the button is off, and the air mode keeps defaulting to your face and feet instead of staying where you select it. You have to repeatedly toggle the controls to get them to work temporarily, and the unwanted cold air to your feet has caused numbness and slow foot movements that force you to pull over and warm up. The dealership has attempted repairs twice under warranty without solving the issue.

Your horn stopped working and doesn't make any sound when you press it. You've notified your local dealer about the issue, but it hasn't been diagnosed or repaired yet. The problem appeared at 16,000 miles. A technician will need to inspect the horn circuit, wiring, and horn component itself to identify and fix the issue.

Your 2024 Sonata unexpectedly lost power and slowed from 60 MPH down to 20 MPH when you tried to accelerate to pass another vehicle. This happened three times total, and turning the car off and back on temporarily fixed it, though no warning lights appeared. A mechanic diagnosed a failed transfer case, and while the dealer repaired it, they couldn't identify the root cause. The issue occurred around 16,500 miles.

Your car jerks hard multiple times when you start it in cold weather. You've noticed this is a known issue in previous model years with the same mechanical components, and you're concerned that your 2024 model hasn't been recalled for this problem. The issue likely stems from how the engine manages fuel and ignition timing during cold starts, and may be resolved through a software update or fuel system service.

Filed: Feb 2026

While driving at night with the seat heater and defrost on high, your car's entire electrical system went completely dark for a few seconds—all lights, dashboard, and interior displays shut off. This appeared to happen when the auto high-beam feature tried to engage, and afterward the auto high-beam function stopped working entirely. The system came back on by itself without requiring you to restart the vehicle. This could be dangerous if it happens at highway speeds or in heavy traffic.

Filed: Feb 2026

Your car's headlights, interior lights, and all safety systems—including forward collision avoidance and adaptive cruise control—shut off completely for a brief period before resetting on their own. If this happens while driving at night, you're left without headlights until the system comes back online. The engine keeps running, but everything else powered by the electrical system goes dark. The issue likely involves a problem with the main electrical system or a faulty battery connection that's causing a temporary power loss.

Electrical System,exterior Lighting1 issue

Filed: Jan 2026

Your headlights, brake lights, and interior electronics randomly shut off while you're driving, which creates a serious safety hazard, especially in the early morning or at night. When these lights go out unexpectedly, other drivers can't see your vehicle or your braking, and you lose visibility of your dashboard. This issue likely involves your vehicle's electrical system and may require diagnostic testing to identify the root cause, such as a faulty battery, alternator, wiring connection, or electrical control module.

Steering,electrical System,lane Departure1 issue
criticalSTEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
Filed: Jul 2025

Your 2024 Sonata's Electronic Stability Control (ESC) steering system is malfunctioning, causing you to lose steering control and nearly collide with other vehicles. Even after a previous recall repair in June 2025, the problem persists, and a dealership technician was unable to diagnose the issue during a July 2025 visit. The manufacturer has refused to provide a loaner vehicle while the problem remains unresolved, leaving you driving an unsafe car. A thorough electrical and steering system diagnostic, followed by component replacement or reprogramming of the ESC module, will likely be needed.

Steering,lane Departure,back Over Prevention1 issue
criticalSTEERING,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
Filed: Jun 2025

Your car's Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system is causing unpredictable loss of steering control, with the vehicle veering unexpectedly toward highway medians and losing precision during turns — this has happened multiple times even after the manufacturer's recall repair in June 2025. Additionally, your parking collision assistance system's warning sounds don't work, eliminating an important safety feature for low-speed parking. The combination of these two defects makes your vehicle unsafe to drive and requires immediate dealer investigation and repair.

CrashFiled: Jun 2025

Your car suddenly accelerated on its own while you were pressing hard on the brake after leaving a parking lot, causing it to hit a stopped vehicle multiple times before you turned off the engine. Even though you were braking firmly, the car kept lurching forward and accelerating uncontrollably over a short distance. The issue may involve the throttle control system, brake system, or engine management computer not responding correctly to your inputs.

Filed: Mar 2026

Your seat belt warning light and chime keep going off randomly even though both seat belts are properly fastened. On two separate occasions, your horn stopped working, and your forward collision warning light came on while driving. Multiple dealers couldn't reproduce the seat belt issue, but one determined your horn needs to be replaced. The problems started around 2,000 miles.

Filed: Feb 2026

Your car suddenly lost the ability to accelerate while turning left across traffic at low speed (around 7 mph). You couldn't accelerate even after coming to a stop, but the problem went away after turning the engine off and back on. No warning lights or error codes appeared, and the vehicle operated normally afterward.

Filed: Dec 2025

Your car's emergency braking system is activating on its own when there's no collision risk. This has happened multiple times while driving forward and also while in reverse, even though there's nothing behind the vehicle. The issue appears to be with the forward collision avoidance system falsely triggering the brakes. A technician will likely need to inspect the brake system sensors and recalibrate or replace the collision detection components.

Filed: Oct 2025

Your car's backup camera and forward collision warning systems are disabling frequently when your windshield has morning dew or light fog on it. You'll see warning messages like "Camera Obscured" and "Inattentive Driving Disabled," even though the visibility issue is minor. This seems to happen more easily than on other vehicles you've owned. The fix likely involves cleaning the camera lens, checking the camera calibration, or updating the safety system software.

Filed: Jul 2025

After your 2024 Hyundai Sonata received a software update at the dealer, you've noticed the car jerks and hesitates during acceleration and gear shifts at low to moderate speeds, which feels unsafe in traffic. This problem didn't occur before the update, suggesting the software may have changed how your engine or transmission operates. The dealer hasn't been able to fix it yet. Resolving this will likely require the dealership to reprogram or recalibrate your engine and transmission control software.

Filed: May 2025

Your speedometer reading is inaccurate because your car's speed information comes from the navigation system rather than a traditional speed sensor. The navigation system appears to be glitching, causing incorrect speedometer displays. Your dealer confirmed the issue but said they couldn't fix it. This problem may require a navigation system software update or replacement to correct the speedometer readings.

After a routine service at your Hyundai dealership, the under-engine splash shield detached and dragged underneath your car while driving on the highway. The shield appears to have been installed without proper fasteners (screws or clips), causing it to flap and tear off at high speeds. This poses a safety hazard to your vehicle and others on the road. The fix would involve properly reinstalling the splash shield with correct fasteners to ensure it stays securely in place.

Filed: May 2025

Your 2024 Sonata has a driver attention warning feature that can't be turned off, unlike previous model years. The system triggers frequently—beeping every 5 minutes or so—even when you're driving normally with both hands on the wheel, and it activates after just 10 minutes of driving due to oversensitivity (it can be set off by sunglasses or minor steering movements). This frequent beeping creates a distraction while driving, and Hyundai dealerships have indicated there's no way to disable or adjust the sensitivity.

Filed: May 2025

When you turn off your car and restart it, the speedometer displays an incorrect speed reading. This issue has been reported by multiple 2024 Hyundai Sonata N Line owners, and Hyundai has not been willing to address it even when the problem has been documented. The fix will likely involve a speedometer recalibration or replacement of the speed sensor and instrument cluster components.
