HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 188,282 MY 2001-2004 SONATA AND MY 2001-2004 XG300 AND XG350 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ROAD SALT APPLIED IN THESE JURISDICTIONS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS MAY RESULT IN PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME ON THE VEHICLES, AND MAY RESULT IN THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE SUB-FRAME STEEL. THE CORROSION IS FREQUENTLY VISIBLE AND OFTEN DISCOVERED DURING INSPECTION OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AND OWNERS MAY ALSO HEAR NOISES OR NOTICE TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. IF THESE SIGNALS ARE UNDETECTED OR UNHEEDED, THE CORROSION MAY PROGRESS AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY DETACH FROM THE SUB-FRAME.

Risk: IF THAT HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE MAY LOSE DRIVE POWER TO THE WHEELS, AND THE FRONT WHEEL MAY MAKE CONTACT WITH THE FENDER OR WHEEL WELL, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL MEASURE THE THICKNESS OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME AND INSPECT THE FRONT SUB-FRAME FOR CORROSION DAMAGE AND, IF NECESSARY, THE FRONT SUB-FRAME WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW SUB-FRAME THAT INCORPORATES ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER PANELS. IF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME DOES NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT, THE DEALER WILL ADD DRAINAGE HOLES TO THE SUB-FRAME AND WILL TREAT THE SUB-FRAME WITH RUST-PROOFING MATERIAL TO STOP THE CORROSION PROCESS. THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

Component: AIR BAGS

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT COULD ILLUMINATE DUE TO MOTION OF THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS AND SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR THAT MOUNT TO THE ADJUSTABLE SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY. THIS CONDITION ONLY RELATES TO THE DRIVER AND/OR PASSENGER SEAT-MOUNTED SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG(S).

Risk: THIS CONDITION COULD PREVENT SEAT MOUNTED SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT DURING AN ACCIDENT WHERE SUCH DEPLOYMENT SHOULD OCCUR. NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE SRS SIDE IMPACT AIR BAGS COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY DURING AN ACCIDENT WHERE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT IS INTENDED.

Fix: DEALERS WILL MORE SECURELY FASTEN THE FRONT SEAT SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS AND CONNECTORS TO THE VEHICLE'S FRONT SEAT CUSHION FRAMES. OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL OCCUR IN SIX MAILINGS ON MAY 27, JUNE 3, JUNE 10, JUNE 17, JUNE 24, AND JULY 1, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION THAT LEADS TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATION COULD RESULT FROM MOTION OF THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS AND SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR WHICH MOUNT TO THE ADJUSTABLE SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY. THIS CONDITION ONLY RELATES TO THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAGS AND COULD PREVENT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT DURING A CRASH WHERE SUCH DEPLOYMENT SHOULD OCCUR.

Risk: NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE SRS SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY DURING A SIDE IMPACT CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL MORE SECURELY FASTEN THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESSES AND CONNECTORS TO THE VEHICLE'S FRONT SEAT CUSHION FRAMES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MAY 28, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

Your driver's side airbag deployed suddenly while your car was parked and empty, with no impact or warning. Fortunately, no one was injured. The airbag system likely needs to be inspected and replaced to prevent unexpected deployments in the future.

CrashFiled: Jun 2016

Your son was in a serious frontal accident where another car pulled into his path, striking the driver's side and entire passenger side of the front end. Neither the driver-side steering wheel airbag nor the passenger-side airbag deployed during the crash, despite the severity of impact—the steering wheel was bent, the steering column was broken, and the dashboard was damaged where his knees hit. This airbag failure left your son unprotected during a collision that clearly should have triggered deployment. The airbag system will need to be inspected and likely replaced to determine why the sensors failed to detect the impact.

CrashFiled: Jul 2015

You were driving at 55 mph when you lost control and crashed into a bridge. Your front driver-side airbag failed to deploy during the crash, and you suffered injuries to your head, thumb, knees, neck, and chest that required medical attention. Your vehicle was destroyed in the crash. A police report was filed documenting the incident.

NHTSA #: 10734379

CrashFiled: Dec 2014

Your car was involved in a front-end collision at about 30 mph when another vehicle hit you while you were making a left turn. The airbags did not deploy during the crash, even though the impact was significant enough to require towing the vehicle. A police report was filed, but no injuries were reported. The vehicle was never diagnosed or repaired to determine why the airbags failed.

Your airbag warning light keeps turning on and off intermittently. Your car was already repaired under a Hyundai recall (campaign 02V105000), but the problem came back. The dealer says they're only responsible for one repair under the recall, and even after another mechanic fixed it, the warning light returned again. The repair will likely involve diagnosing the airbag system's electrical connections or replacing a faulty airbag control module or sensor.

Your car's front lower control arm completely separated from the subframe due to corrosion. When this happens, you lose power to the front wheels and the wheel can rub against the fender, which increases the risk of losing control and crashing. Your mechanic believes this should have been covered under a recall issued several years ago for this exact issue. The vehicle is currently at Columbia Family Auto Care in Jessup, MD and needs immediate inspection and repair to reattach or replace the control arm assembly.

While turning right, you heard an abnormal noise from the front passenger side tire. An inspection revealed that the control arm had fractured and separated from the frame due to rust and corrosion damage. This made your vehicle unsafe to drive and required towing to a dealer for repair. The fix will involve replacing the damaged control arm and addressing any frame corrosion.

NHTSA #: 11057343

Filed: Dec 2021

Your car's upper rear control arm connection point on the subframe has rusted away, destroying the area where the bushing mounts. This leaves nowhere to properly attach the bushing that holds the control arm in place. The fix will likely require either welding/reinforcing the rusted subframe area or replacing the subframe entirely.

Filed: Oct 2014

While driving at about 35 mph, you heard an abnormal noise coming from the front passenger side of your vehicle. A mechanic inspected it and found that your front axle and front subframe both needed to be replaced. This is a structural issue that affects how your car handles and supports its weight.

NHTSA #: 10650715

Filed: Apr 2016

The rear suspension support on your car has rusted through, causing the rear wheels to tilt inward and making the car undriveable. You experienced loss of control while driving at 45 mph, with the car swaying between lanes and swerving uncontrollably over bumps. The rusted suspension structure will need to be inspected and likely replaced or reinforced to restore safe handling.

Your 2001 Hyundai Sonata was repaired under a suspension recall, but the same problem happened again at 153,000 miles. A mechanic found that the rear suspension upper control arms had corroded and needed replacement. Even though you reported this to Hyundai, the vehicle wasn't fixed. Replacing the corroded upper control arms should resolve the suspension issue.

Suspension,wheels,unknown Or Other1 issue
criticalSUSPENSION,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Jun 2019

Your car's front suspension suddenly collapsed while driving, causing the driver's side wheel to jam against the wheel well and forcing you to stop. After the dealer repaired the engine cradle and subframe, your car failed a safety inspection due to missing cotter keys on the front control arms and tie rods, a faulty wheel bearing, and misalignment that the shop couldn't correct. The repair may require replacement of suspension components including control arms, tie rods, wheel bearings, and a proper wheel alignment to restore your car to its pre-incident condition.

NHTSA #: 11220217
Steering,structure,unknown Or Other1 issue
criticalSTEERING,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Sep 2016

Your car's frame has severe rust and corrosion that caused the rear tire rod to break while you were driving on the highway at high speed, resulting in loss of control and two 360-degree spins. Hyundai acknowledged a frame recall in 2009 but didn't contact you until after this incident in 2016. The dealership estimates the frame damage costs more than the car's value, and the service manager indicated this is a widespread problem affecting multiple vehicles.

Service Brakes1 issue
criticalSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Oct 2015

While backing out of your driveway, your brake pedal went to the floor and brake fluid leaked out through a rusty steel brake line on the driver's side. After having that line replaced, the same problem happened a month later on the opposite side. In an emergency stop situation, complete brake failure could have occurred, creating a serious safety hazard.

Steering,suspension,structure1 issue
criticalSTEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
Filed: Dec 2014

Your car's front subframe broke due to corrosion, causing the axle to fall apart while you were driving. This is a serious structural failure that affects your ability to control the vehicle. Repair will likely require replacement of the front subframe and axle assembly.

NHTSA #: 10664658
Suspension,wheels1 issue
criticalSUSPENSION,WHEELS
Filed: Jan 2014

While driving, your wheel assembly broke free from the car's frame due to rust and dropped to the ground. Hyundai has a recall for this exact issue, but it only covers cars registered in salt-belt states — your car was originally sold in Virginia and isn't covered even though it was driven through salt-belt areas. This is a serious safety hazard that could have caused a crash at higher speeds. The fix would likely involve replacing the rusted subframe and wheel assembly components.

While driving, your car's driver-side CV axle became disconnected from the transmission, leaving you stranded. Upon inspection, you discovered the subframe underneath was severely corroded and had deteriorated. This appears to be a known issue affecting this model year with existing recalls available.

Filed: Jul 2018

Your airbag warning light turns on when you start the engine, and the seat belt in the rear-left seat won't fasten properly. Both of these are safety system issues that need attention. A mechanic will need to scan the airbag system for fault codes and inspect the seat belt mechanism for damage or wear.

Fuel/propulsion System1 issue
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Oct 2016

You're experiencing a strong fuel vapor smell inside your cabin without a check engine light. A diagnostic code pointed to a faulty vapor canister valve, but a small garage discovered the real issue: a rubber hose connecting your fuel tank to the fuel rail had developed a hole at a sharp bend, leaking gasoline. The dealership quoted $400+ for a canister replacement, but replacing the damaged rubber hose with a more durable braided metal hose connection should resolve the fuel smell and vapor leak.
