NHTSA Campaign: 23V526000
Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:FLUID/LUBRICANT:PUMP
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Palisade Tucson, 2023 Sonata, Elantra, and Kona vehicles. The electronic controller for the Idle Stop & Go oil pump assembly may contain damaged electrical components that can cause the pump controller to overheat.
Risk: An electric oil pump assembly that overheats increases the risk of a vehicle fire.
Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will inspect and replace the electric oil pump controller, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed starting September 7, 2023. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 246.
NHTSA Campaign: 25V796000
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Sonata vehicles. A damaged check valve can allow air to enter the fuel tank, causing it to expand and contact hot exhaust components, melting the tank.
Risk: A melted fuel tank can leak, increasing the risk of a fire.
Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the check valve. The fuel tank assembly will be inspected for damage and replaced if necessary. Additionally, dealers will inspect and update the engine control unit software. All repairs will be performed as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning March 13, 2026. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 286. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on November 19, 2025.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 79)
Fuel System, Gasoline →4 issues
Your 2023 Hyundai Sonata may have trouble starting after you press the START/STOP button, and you might see smoke coming from the exhaust pipe. The dashboard displayed a message (details not specified), but no warning light turned on. The dealer replaced the fuel injector, but the problem continued and wasn't fully repaired. This issue may be related to a known fuel system recall, though your vehicle's VIN wasn't included in that recall.

Your car's fuel economy display suddenly jumped from 320 to 431 miles, and you received a diagnostic warning about the EVAP sensor. The dealer found that the EVAP system valve was stuck open, which caused your fuel tank to swell. The swelling also triggered a false warning light from your rear seat sensor. The fix involved replacing both the EVAP system valve and the fuel tank.

Your 2023 Hyundai Sonata is subject to a fuel system recall (Campaign 25V796000), but the manufacturer hasn't made the repair parts available yet despite what you feel is a reasonable amount of time. You haven't experienced any actual fuel system failure, but the dealer hasn't been able to schedule the recall repair because the parts aren't in stock. The fix will likely involve replacing fuel system components once the manufacturer releases the necessary parts.

Fuel/propulsion System →3 issues
Your 2023 Sonata has experienced serious fuel system problems related to Recall 25V-796, including loud popping noises, inability to refuel at some stations, rapid fuel leaks while driving, and an inaccurate fuel gauge that jumps between readings. The vehicle has been at the dealership since December 6th without a fix, leaving you without transportation despite making monthly payments. The dealership and Hyundai have not yet resolved the issue.

While driving on the highway at 70 mph, your check engine light came on and your engine suddenly began shaking violently, losing power, and running very rough. The accelerator barely responded, making it dangerous to control the vehicle in heavy traffic. You also noticed a strong smell of gasoline and burning odor inside the cabin. The engine wouldn't restart after you shut it off, and the dealer found that all four fuel injectors were faulty and needed replacement.

Your car's fuel injectors are failing, causing sudden power loss while driving in traffic and on highways—a serious safety hazard. This has happened twice, requiring fuel injector replacement both times (first at 12,000 miles in December 2024). The fix involves replacing the fuel injectors at a dealership to restore proper engine power delivery.

Your 2023 Sonata has a safety-related recall code (286) that Hyundai has been unable to fix for nearly three months. Hyundai's corporate team collected your financing and vehicle information but has failed to provide promised updates or a solution, leaving you without a working car or loaner vehicle. You're concerned about a potential fire risk while driving. The repair will likely require Hyundai's service department to diagnose and replace whatever component is triggering the recall code 286.

Your 2023 Sonata Hybrid may develop an internal coolant leak in the cooling system that causes white steam to come from the exhaust, especially during acceleration. When this happens, coolant drains quickly, your interior heater stops working, and your engine overheating warning appears, forcing you to stop driving immediately. This defect may require inspection and repair of the coolant system, possibly including the Exhaust Heat Recovery System (EHRS) component.

Power Train →2 issues
Your transmission is unexpectedly shifting from Drive (D) to Park (P) while you're driving, forcing you to turn off the engine and restart the car. This has happened at least 8 times since you bought the car and creates a serious safety hazard, as other vehicles could rear-end you when your car suddenly stops. The transmission may need electrical or mechanical repair to prevent this unsafe shifting behavior.

Your engine shut off without warning while you were driving in heavy traffic, causing a sudden loss of power and creating a dangerous situation. This type of stalling can leave you vulnerable to collisions, especially in busy driving conditions. The engine may need diagnostic testing to identify why it shut down unexpectedly, which could involve checking the fuel system, ignition system, or engine control computer.

Electrical System,engine →2 issues
Your car's battery management system is completely draining the 12V battery, leaving your vehicle with no power. When this happens, you can't unlock the doors or trunk, even when you return from trips. This has occurred twice on your vehicle after extended absences, requiring you to manually access the car using the physical key, which is inconvenient and potentially unsafe. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the battery management system and possibly replacing the battery or repairing the charging/power management components.

Back Over Prevention, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your 2023 Sonata Hybrid suddenly accelerated forcefully into a building while you were slowly backing out of a parking spot in Eco mode, despite only lightly applying the gas pedal. The collision mechanic suggested this is a known issue with 2023 Sonatas — the vehicle may unexpectedly apply or release the electronic brake and aggressively switch from electric to gas power when encountering resistance. This unintended acceleration caused your vehicle to be declared a total loss at just 17,000 miles.

Structure,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your 2023 Sonata experienced engine misfires in cylinder 2 and high fuel tank pressure related to recall 286, which the dealership refused to repair despite four service visits between 57k and 68k miles. The dealership repeatedly cleared the check engine codes and put your car back on the road in limp mode without addressing the underlying issue. On February 14th, your car lost power due to limp mode and was unable to move out of the way, resulting in an accident. Fixing this issue will likely require the dealership to perform the recall 286 repair, which may involve replacing the fuel injector, ignition coil, or fuel pressure regulator.

Power Train,unknown Or Other,engine →1 issue
Your 2023 Sonata suddenly jerks and enters a reduced-power "limp" mode without warning, sometimes while driving at highway speeds. When this happens, the engine revs but the car won't accelerate, making it impossible to safely merge or pull over. This has occurred 13 times in 4 months across different driving conditions. Your dealership replaced the transmission after three visits, but couldn't identify what originally caused the problem, leaving the underlying issue potentially unresolved.

Power Train, vehicle Speed Control, back Over Prevention →1 issue
Your car lurched forward on its own while parked with the engine running and brake applied, hitting a cement block. When you shifted to reverse and pressed the gas, the car moved forward instead of backward, going over the parking block and hitting a concrete beam. The car drove normally afterward, and you're unsure whether the reverse gear failed to engage or if something else caused the unexpected forward movement.

Steering,electrical System,lane Departure →1 issue
Your car's safety features—including the backup camera, electronic power steering, traction control, lane assist, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision avoidance—are cutting out completely and then suddenly coming back online. When power steering suddenly restores after losing all these features, your car may swerve into other lanes or off the road. This happens repeatedly in cold weather, and you have dashboard warning light photos documenting the issue.

Engine →1 issue
Your car lost all its coolant overnight and overheated twice on the highway, but you couldn't find any visible leaks. The dealership discovered coolant was leaking into your exhaust system and burning off instead of dripping out. Hyundai had a known bulletin about this issue and had to redesign the part to fix it, which required special ordering and a week without your car. The repair cost $1,300 and wasn't covered by warranty.
