Filed: Feb 2026

Your car's airbags deployed unexpectedly while driving with no collision or impact. This is a serious safety issue because airbags deploying without a crash can cause injury and indicates a malfunction in the airbag system's sensors or control module.

NHTSA #: 11717099
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Jan 2026

Your side curtain airbags deployed while you were driving, even though there was no accident or impact. This is a serious safety issue because airbags should only deploy during a crash. The problem likely involves a faulty airbag sensor or control module that needs to be diagnosed and replaced.

NHTSA #: 11709808
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Mar 2025

Your car's passenger airbag system showed a warning message saying "Passenger Restraint System Malfunctioned" after you started the vehicle. This warning indicates a problem with your airbag system that needs to be diagnosed and repaired. BMW should take responsibility for fixing this safety system issue, as it may not be covered under your extended warranty.

Filed: Sep 2025

You may become trapped inside your car if the key fob is outside the vehicle, as the doors and windows cannot be opened without it. This creates a dangerous situation, especially on hot days or if a child is left inside. Your car requires a special dealership procedure to unlock the doors from the inside in an emergency. A potential fix could involve making the interior door lock pins more accessible for emergency manual unlocking.

NHTSA #: 11690081

Filed: Dec 2025

Your sunroof suddenly shattered and exploded while you were driving on the highway, even though the cover was closed and no external object hit it. A police officer found no evidence of impact from rocks, bullets, or other debris. Both BMW dealerships have refused warranty coverage, claiming this isn't covered even though you've found reports of this being a recurring issue with BMW vehicles. The repair will likely involve replacing the sunroof glass panel and inspecting the sunroof assembly for manufacturing defects.

NHTSA #: 11705820
highUNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Nov 2025

Your windshield glass appears to be unusually fragile and cracks or chips easily, even from minor impacts. The windshield has required multiple repairs within just two months, and you've noticed this issue is reported on several websites for your vehicle's make, model, and year. The BMW service center is aware of the problem, though no warning light appears. Fixing this will likely require windshield replacement rather than repair.

FireFiled: Sep 2025

You noticed smoke coming from under the hood while driving, and you safely pulled into a parking lot. The smoke then turned into a fire that completely destroyed your car by the time the fire department arrived. No dashboard warning lights appeared before the incident, despite the severity of the problem.

NHTSA #: 11688575
highENGINE
Filed: Mar 2025

Your vehicle has stalled unexpectedly while driving at around 30 MPH on multiple occasions, with no warning lights appearing beforehand. The dealer was unable to diagnose the cause despite inspection. This issue has occurred around 150,000 miles and poses a safety concern since the engine cuts out while you're driving.

NHTSA #: 11647449
Vehicle Speed Control1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Mar 2026

Your car unexpectedly accelerated from 20 MPH to 40 MPH while you were slowing down to stop at a red light or stop sign, with no warning light appearing. The dealer was unable to reproduce the problem during testing, so no repair was made. This type of unintended acceleration could pose a serious safety risk if it happens again.

NHTSA #: 11725049
Service Brakes1 issue
criticalSERVICE BRAKES
CrashFiled: Mar 2026

While parked in a garage with the emergency brake engaged, your X3 rolled backward and struck another vehicle. You believe the emergency brake failed to hold the car in place, resulting in a collision, personal injury to the other driver, and vehicle damage to both cars. BMW has not acknowledged responsibility for the brake system malfunction. Resolving this issue would require BMW to inspect and potentially repair or replace the parking brake assembly and related components.

FireFiled: Feb 2026

Your vehicle caught fire and exploded while parked in an underground parking garage. According to an official forensic report from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, a short circuit in the engine compartment electrical wiring caused the fire with no warning signs beforehand. The vehicle was seized as evidence and the investigation confirmed the fire was caused solely by an internal electrical fault, not external factors like arson.

NHTSA #: 11718288
Steering,electrical System,service Brakes1 issue
criticalSTEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Aug 2025

Your vehicle intermittently displays a "Loss of Communications Brake System Control Module A" message and loses power steering, speedometer function, tire pressure monitoring, and stability control. When this happens, steering becomes much harder to operate and you can't see your current speed—both serious safety concerns. The problem clears after turning the vehicle off and restarting it about an hour later, but it has occurred multiple times randomly. The dealer performed a software update, but the random nature of the issue suggests it may require diagnosis and repair of the brake control module or related electrical connections.

NHTSA #: 11683402
Tires1 issue
criticalTIRES
Filed: Jul 2025

Your factory-installed Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season tires wore out dangerously fast—showing severe tread wear and causing hydroplaning and traction loss at just 18,000–23,456 miles, even though the UTQG 500 rating suggests they should last 40,000–50,000 miles. You may experience slipping, poor stability, and handling issues in wet or dry conditions as the tires degrade prematurely. The dealer confirmed the tread depth dropped to 1–2 mm (unsafe levels) far earlier than expected, and BMW notes this premature failure is typical for this OEM tire. Addressing this will likely require tire replacement with a different brand or model that offers better durability and traction performance.

Power Train,engine,fuel/propulsion System1 issue
criticalPOWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
FireFiled: May 2025

Your 2022 BMW X3 suddenly caught fire while being driven, resulting in the vehicle being completely destroyed. A "drivetrain malfunction" warning appeared in the BMW app only after the fire had already started. The vehicle was under warranty, regularly maintained at authorized dealers, and had no active recalls at the time. You're concerned this fire may be related to a manufacturing defect, possibly involving fuel system issues like cracked or leaking fuel rails.

NHTSA #: 11659179
Latches/locks/linkages1 issue
highLATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
Filed: Nov 2025

Your driver side rear door lock keeps engaging even after you unlock the car with your key fob, which prevents you from opening the door quickly in an emergency. This is concerning if you need to get a passenger out of the back seat fast. The issue may require inspection and repair of the door locking mechanism or its electrical control system.

NHTSA #: 11700158
Electrical System1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Sep 2025

Your car's starter motor may not be working properly, making it difficult or impossible to start your engine. This could leave you stranded and unable to drive your vehicle. The starter motor would likely need to be replaced or repaired to restore normal starting function.

NHTSA #: 11690152
Electrical System,unknown Or Other1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Aug 2025

Your car's start-stop system has failed twice in 18 months, leaving you unable to move the vehicle and stranded in traffic. Because the electronic transmission won't shift to neutral during these failures, you couldn't push the car to safety and had to wait for a tow truck. The owner is concerned that this design—where cars can't be manually shifted to neutral—creates a serious highway safety risk, especially in heavy traffic.

NHTSA #: 11678175
Electrical System,lane Departure1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
Filed: May 2025

Your car's rear radar sensor, which powers the blind spot detection and lane departure warning system, was found to be misaligned due to impact damage behind the bumper. The sensor had been triggered 35 times with missing screws and signs of previous repair, but the dealership didn't disclose this when selling you the vehicle as Certified Pre-Owned. You have no way to verify that the sensor was properly repaired or calibrated to meet safety standards. The fix will likely involve realigning or replacing the rear radar sensor and ensuring it's properly calibrated.

NHTSA #: 11662310
Seats1 issue
highSEATS
Filed: Feb 2025

Your driver's seat appears to be misaligned — when you sit back with your head on the headrest, your view through the windshield is shifted toward the left A-pillar instead of being centered, which affects visibility and causes discomfort and back pain on longer drives. The seat frame may be structurally damaged or improperly positioned. BMW's initial inspection using only a wooden stick didn't identify the problem, but your own measurements with a laser level confirmed the seat is shifted about 2 cm toward the door and rotated at an angle. Fixing this will likely require the seat frame to be realigned, adjusted, or potentially replaced by a BMW technician.

NHTSA #: 11642915
Power Train1 issue
mediumPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Dec 2025

Your car is shaking or vibrating slightly when you brake, even though the transfer case fluid and front and rear drivetrain fluids have already been replaced. This suggests the problem may be related to the drivetrain system beyond just fluid issues. The repair might involve inspecting the drivetrain components, suspension, or brake system to identify what's causing the shuddering.

NHTSA #: 11705644
