Open Safety Recalls (1)
NHTSA Campaign: 23V865000
Component: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Corolla, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, Lexus ES350, Lexus RX350, Lexus RX450H, 2021 Sienna Hybrid, Lexus ES250, 2020-2022 Camry, Camry Hybrid, and ES300H vehicles. A short circuit may develop in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor, preventing the front passenger air bag from deploying.
Risk: An air bag that does not deploy during a crash increases the risk of injury.
Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the sensor as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed in February 2024. Some final remedy owner letters were mailed October 31, 2024. Letters will continue to be mailed in phases through January 2026. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 23TB15/23TA15 Lexus 23LB03/23LA03.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 46)
Air Bags →5 issues
Your car's airbag system displayed a "SRS Air Bag Malfunction detected" warning message and illuminated the airbag warning light when you started the vehicle. The dealership couldn't reproduce the problem during their diagnostic check, so the vehicle wasn't repaired. You believe this may be related to a Toyota recall (Campaign 23V865000), but the manufacturer hasn't provided assistance.

Your airbags failed to deploy during a collision with a deer, resulting in serious injury to a passenger. The vehicle owner reports not receiving any safety recall notices before the accident and states that prior notification would have prompted them to have the vehicle inspected. A repair or replacement of the airbag system and related safety components would be needed to address this failure.

Your airbags deployed when you hit a curb, causing you to lose control of the vehicle. The airbag deployment injured a passenger with cuts on their hand from sharp fragments coming from the airbags. You're concerned that the airbags didn't deploy in a previous accident but did deploy in this lower-impact curb strike. Diagnosing this issue will require a professional inspection of your airbag system, sensors, and deployment mechanism to determine why they activated and why fragments caused injuries.

Your car was involved in a high-speed crash where another vehicle hit your front fender, front bumper, and driver's door, and you were thrown against the door. Despite the impact being severe enough that insurance declared your car a total loss, none of the airbags deployed. The airbag system may have failed to activate when needed in a significant collision.

Engine →1 issue
Your engine's connecting rod broke suddenly while you were driving in traffic, causing the engine to fail completely and your car to lose power. You had to use only the car's momentum to safely steer it to the shoulder of the road. This could have been dangerous if you hadn't been able to control the vehicle during the power loss. The fix would likely require a complete engine replacement or extensive engine rebuild.

Visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your windshield wipers aren't clearing water effectively, even when set to high speed. During heavy rain on the highway, your wife experienced near-zero visibility because the wipers moved too slowly to keep up with the downpour, forcing you to pull over. This is a significant safety issue, especially at highway speeds in heavy traffic. The wiper blades or wiper motor may need replacement or adjustment to restore proper clearing speed.

Vehicle Speed Control,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your 2022 Camry experienced sudden, uncontrollable rapid acceleration on three separate occasions — at a car wash, while lane changing, and again at a car wash — despite only lightly pressing the accelerator pedal. The third incident resulted in a crash into a pole at 45 mph, totaling the vehicle and sending occupants to the emergency room. Toyota's dealer inspection found no mechanical or electronic issues and suggested the cruise control may have been accidentally engaged, but the problem recurred even after this warning. The root cause of these acceleration events may require deeper diagnostics of the throttle control system, fuel injection system, or electronic engine control module.

Air Bags,service Brakes →1 issue
Your car's airbags may not deploy properly during a crash, and your service brakes may not function as intended. Both systems are critical safety features, and failures in either could put you and your passengers at serious risk. You should have a certified technician inspect both your airbag system and brake system immediately.

Service Brakes, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your forward collision warning sensor activates when you get too close to another vehicle, but when it does, your brake pedal becomes soft and unresponsive, and you hear rattling from the brakes. This has happened multiple times and only occurs when the sensor is triggered, making it difficult to brake properly. The issue may involve checking the brake sensor wiring, brake fluid pressure system, or the interaction between the collision avoidance system and your brakes.

Structure,vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your car suddenly accelerated on its own while you were slowly pulling into a parking spot, causing it to crash into another vehicle, which then hit a third car. This unintended acceleration happened without you pressing the gas pedal and resulted in a multi-vehicle collision. The issue may involve the throttle control system or electronic speed management, which may need diagnostic testing and potential replacement or reprogramming.

Power Train,electrical System,service Brakes →1 issue
While slowly driving into a parking lot with a slight downward slope, you gently applied the brakes as you approached a parking block, but the brake pedal sank and didn't hold the car. Your vehicle lurched forward, jumped over the parking block, and stopped at the curb. After shifting to reverse and repositioning the car, everything appeared normal and no damage was visible, though the undercarriage may have been affected. Additionally, since your last service visit for an oil change, a persistent "Maintenance Required" warning message appears each time you start the engine, which the technician did not clear or recalibrate. This may indicate the brake issue or other system problems weren't properly diagnosed or the warning system wasn't reset after service.

Electrical System,seat Belts →1 issue
Your infotainment system (screen, maps, and music) cuts out and freezes whenever you hit a bump, forcing you to pull over and restart the car multiple times during trips. The auxiliary audio input has a loose connection that causes complete system shutdowns, and your Bluetooth also disconnects frequently with static and audio dropouts. Additionally, your seatbelt occasionally won't release when you try to fasten it, requiring you to turn off the entire car and restart it. These issues require inspection of the auxiliary cable connections, the infotainment system's internal wiring, and the seatbelt locking mechanism.

Steering,electrical System →1 issue
Your heated steering wheel gets extremely hot on the left side, creating a burning smell and smoke with visible burn marks on the wheel. The excessive heat is concerning and suggests a potential electrical malfunction in the heating element. A mechanic will need to inspect the steering wheel heating system and likely replace the faulty heating element or control module.

Power Train →1 issue
Your car is making a grinding noise from the front end when you accelerate, and the dealership has confirmed the transmission is the source. The transmission needs to be replaced, and there are known recalls for this issue on 2021 Camry models. Your dealership is waiting for a remanufactured transmission to arrive on backorder, won't provide a loaner vehicle until then, and won't restart your warranty from zero miles even though you're getting a replacement transmission.

Vehicle Speed Control, unknown Or Other →1 issue
The carpet around your driver's side floor mats is coming loose because it was cut too short during manufacturing. If the carpet continues to deteriorate, it could potentially interfere with your accelerator or brake pedals, which might cause unintended acceleration or braking. Your dealership has documented the issue with video. The fix will likely involve replacing or properly securing the carpet and floor mat assembly.

Vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your engine occasionally revs up when you're braking, most notably when braking at a stop sign. Even though your foot is only on the brake pedal and not touching the accelerator, your car's system displays a warning that both pedals are being pressed simultaneously, forcing you to brake harder to stop. This has happened multiple times, including while parking, and your dealer has been unable to resolve the issue despite several service visits.

Air Bags,unknown Or Other,lane Departure →1 issue
Your car was involved in a rear-end collision on April 14, 2023, where no one was determined to be at fault according to the police report. The complaint involves the airbags and lane departure warning system, though specific details about what's not working aren't provided. You may want to have a dealer inspect these safety systems to ensure they're functioning properly after the accident.

Electrical System →1 issue
Your stereo's menu display isn't working. Toyota has issued a recall for the 12.5-inch display that can cause menu options and stereo functions to stop working, but when you had your vehicle serviced, this issue wasn't included in the recall coverage. The fix will likely involve Toyota inspecting whether your display qualifies for the recall or requires a replacement display unit.

Your sunroof suddenly stopped working and became stuck while you were driving at 65 mph. Your dashboard displayed a maintenance warning message, but no warning light came on. A dealer inspection found that the sunroof mechanism had failed and needed to be replaced. The sunroof replacement would involve removing and installing a new sunroof assembly.
