NHTSA Campaign: 25V893000

Component: TRAILER HITCHES

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Tucson vehicles equipped with an optional Mobis tow hitch wiring harness. The wiring harness may have been installed incorrectly, allowing water into the control module. Moisture accumulation may cause the trailer lighting to fail or an electrical short circuit.

Risk: Nonfunctioning trailer lights can increase the risk of a crash. A short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the trailer wiring harness, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed February 13, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available, anticipated July 2026. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 290. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on December 20, 2025.

Filed: Mar 2026

Your 2022 Hyundai Tucson experienced engine hesitation and shaking while parked, with the check engine light coming on—the dealer found a failed fuel injector and replaced it. However, after the repair, your vehicle lost power while driving at around 69,000 miles, and the dealer diagnosed failed cylinders that needed replacement. The repair was not completed, and Hyundai was notified of the issue. Fixing this will likely require replacing the fuel injectors and inspecting or replacing the engine cylinders.

Filed: Feb 2026

Your EGR valve has failed twice. Hyundai covered the first failure under warranty, but is refusing to cover the second failure at 73,000 miles, even though you believe it should be covered under the federal emissions warranty that extends to 80,000 miles. Fixing this will require replacing the EGR valve, which is an emissions control component.

Fuel/propulsion System3 issues
highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2026

Your car's high pressure fuel injectors have failed. This component is responsible for spraying fuel into the engine, and when it fails, your car may not start, run roughly, or lose power while driving. The fuel injectors will need to be replaced to restore proper engine operation.

Filed: Feb 2026

Your check engine light came on at 60,900 miles due to a problem with the #2 fuel injector (part of the direct injection system). The injector has been repaired, but since the issue occurred just after your 60,000-mile mark, it fell outside the warranty coverage. Fixing this typically involves replacing or cleaning the faulty fuel injector.

highFUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Feb 2026

Your 2022 Tucson needed warranty repair for a fuel injector leak causing engine misfires, but the dealership didn't have the parts in stock, leaving you without your vehicle for a week and costing you $369.61 in rental and towing fees. You've been waiting 3 weeks for Hyundai to reimburse these expenses without response. Additionally, when you asked the dealership to complete a known safety recall (issued December 19, 2025) while your car was already there, you were told no recalls existed—but NHTSA records show otherwise. This repair may involve replacing one or more fuel injectors and related seals to stop the leak.

Power Train,engine,fuel/propulsion System2 issues
criticalPOWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2026

Your hybrid system is shutting down without warning, causing your car to lose power and stall while driving. You'll see a "Check Hybrid System. Stop Safely" message on the dashboard right before this happens, forcing you to pull over wherever you are. Restarting the car temporarily fixes the problem, but it keeps recurring every few weeks. Your dealer hasn't been able to pinpoint the cause because no error codes are being recorded by your car's diagnostic system, though this issue appears to be affecting multiple owners.

highPOWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2026

Your 2022 Hyundai Tucson's check engine light came on at 52,000 miles, and the engine started sputtering and struggling to idle properly. When you pressed the gas pedal on the highway, the car wouldn't accelerate beyond 35 mph. The check engine light continues to turn on and off intermittently. The issue likely involves a fuel system component or engine sensor that needs diagnostic testing and repair.

Tires1 issue
criticalTIRES
Filed: Mar 2026

Your four Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra tires wore down from 9/32" of safe tread to legally bald 2/32" in just 3,800 miles over three months, despite proper wheel alignment and regular maintenance. All four tires degraded uniformly, suggesting a defect in the tire compound rather than alignment or driving issues. The rapid tread loss created a wet-weather safety hazard by reducing traction and hydroplaning resistance. You may need to replace all four tires and potentially pursue a warranty claim with the tire manufacturer.

Seat Belts1 issue
criticalSEAT BELTS
Filed: Mar 2026

Your front passenger side seat belt stopped working suddenly—it won't latch anymore, even though it worked fine the day before. This is a safety issue that needs immediate attention before anyone sits in that seat. The fix will likely involve inspecting the seat belt latch mechanism and either cleaning, adjusting, or replacing the damaged latch assembly.

Engine,fuel/propulsion System1 issue
criticalENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2026

Your engine oil is being contaminated with gasoline, which has happened multiple times despite service visits. You're experiencing a check engine light, severe hesitation, jerking motions, a distinct gasoline smell in the oil, burning smells, and higher-than-normal engine temperatures—making the car difficult and potentially unsafe to drive. The dealership has dismissed your concerns on multiple occasions. This issue typically requires diagnosis of why fuel is entering the oil system, which may involve inspecting fuel injectors, piston rings, or the fuel delivery system.

NHTSA #: 11722593
Structure,unknown Or Other1 issue
criticalSTRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Feb 2026

Your car's front passenger side lower frame has cracked, allowing rusty water to leak from the body. Multiple inspectors—including your Hyundai dealership, another dealership's manager, and three auto body welders—confirmed the damage. If your car were hit on the passenger side, this crack could prevent the frame from staying stable and cause it to crumple instead of protecting you. The crack first appeared after you washed and dried your car in December 2025. Fixing this will likely require frame welding or replacement of the damaged structural section.

NHTSA #: 11719742
Power Train,electrical System1 issue
criticalPOWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Feb 2026

While driving on the highway at normal speeds, your car's hybrid system warning light appeared and the vehicle lost power, forcing you to pull over. You had to reset the 12-volt hybrid battery using the car's reset button to restart the engine. A complete loss of power at highway speed is a serious safety concern that needs immediate diagnosis of the hybrid battery and electrical system.

Service Brakes,forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
criticalSERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
CrashFiled: Jan 2026

While driving at highway speed with cruise control and lane-keeping assist active, a semi-truck suddenly moved into your lane. Your Forward Collision Warning system didn't alert you, your Adaptive Cruise Control didn't slow the car, and when you pressed the brake pedal, the brakes didn't respond. You collided with the semi at approximately 60 mph and subsequently hit a concrete barrier. A brake system inspection and diagnostic scan of the collision avoidance and adaptive cruise control systems will be necessary to determine why these safety features failed to activate.

Power Train1 issue
criticalPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Jan 2026

Your engine developed low compression immediately after the dealership replaced a seized fuel injector on October 16, 2025, while your vehicle was in their care. You weren't notified of this compression problem until 10 days later, and the diagnostic report you received lacks specific pressure readings and supporting details. You're concerned that the repair work or handling may have caused internal engine damage that could lead to unsafe operation or failure.

NHTSA #: 11713783
Electrical System1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Mar 2026

Your car's battery completely drains if you don't drive it for more than 4 days, leaving the vehicle with no power. This has happened multiple times over the past year, and despite multiple visits to the dealer for computer diagnostics and battery resets, the cause hasn't been identified. Hyundai's only suggestion was to drive the car for 30 minutes every other day, which isn't a real solution for a vehicle that should hold a charge during normal storage. The underlying electrical drain issue remains undiagnosed and could potentially occur while driving.

NHTSA #: 11727780
Electrical System,engine1 issue
highELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
Filed: Mar 2026

Your engine is misfiring during acceleration (it wobbles and feels rough), which has happened three times since July. You're also experiencing a parasitic battery drain that prevents your key fob from opening the car. The dealership initially blamed bad fuel but later confirmed the fuel is within normal limits, and they've refused to perform a full diagnostic on your engine and electrical system despite your repeated requests.

Filed: Mar 2026

Your touchscreen is unresponsive to touch in most areas, only working in one small corner. When the car gets hot, the screen beeps and randomly enters the settings menu, changes settings, and switches away from navigation apps on its own without being touched — a serious distraction while driving. You've reported this to the dealership multiple times, tried hard and soft resets, but the problem persists. The dealership may need to replace the touchscreen unit or update its software, though you haven't received those updates despite multiple service visits.

NHTSA #: 11723851
Power Train,engine1 issue
highPOWER TRAIN,ENGINE
Filed: Feb 2026

Your car is experiencing intermittent cylinder 3 misfires and air-fuel ratio imbalance codes, causing engine shaking and loss of acceleration—particularly noticeable on the freeway. You've already replaced spark plugs, ignition coils, and flushed the fuel system ($1,500), but the problem persists and your dealership hasn't identified the root cause. The issue likely involves a faulty fuel injector, fuel pressure regulator, or engine sensor that needs diagnostic testing and replacement.

NHTSA #: 11720884
Steering1 issue
highSTEERING
Filed: Feb 2026

While driving at 15 mph, your Tucson suddenly jerked to the right and went into a snowbank. The steering problem occurred at 30,200 miles, but when the dealer checked it, they couldn't reproduce the issue. Your vehicle wasn't repaired since the problem couldn't be confirmed. A steering inspection or potential replacement of steering components may be needed if the jerking happens again.
