NHTSA Campaign: 16V420000
Component: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain model year 2016 Toyota Camry and Highlander, 2015-2016 Toyota Tundra, Scion FR-S, and tC vehicles. The Load Carrying Capacity Modification Label may not reflect the correct added weight of the installed accessories. As a result, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars."
Risk: An incorrect label may lead an owner to overload the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: SET will notify owners, and provide a corrected label for placement over the inaccurate label, free of charge. The recall began on July 14, 2016. Owners may contact SET customer service at 1-866-405-4226.
NHTSA Campaign: 16V215000
Component: AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2016 Avalon and Camry vehicles manufactured November 30, 2015 to March 4, 2016. The occupant classification system (OCS) that activates or deactivates the front passenger seat air bag system may have been improperly calibrated. As a result, the front passenger air bag and the front passenger knee air bag may not deploy as intended in certain crash scenarios. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Risk: Air bags that do not deploy as intended during a crash increase the risk of injury.
Fix: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will recalibrate the OCS, free of charge. The recall began by May 13, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is G0J.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 178)
Unknown Or Other →4 issues
Your driver's door rattles when closed or while driving. A Toyota dealer found that the intrusion bar (a safety structural component inside the door) has a failed weld, which they confirmed is a safety issue. The only repair available is replacing the entire door, since the bar cannot be rewelded. The car has never been in an accident, suggesting a manufacturing defect. Replacing the door involves removing the old door and installing a new one with a properly welded intrusion bar.

Your engine mount (the part that holds the engine in place) has broken, causing your car to stall and lose the ability to move forward. This is a known problem in Toyota vehicles, but there's no recall for it. Because this can happen while you're driving, it's a safety concern that needs immediate attention.

Your car's beige paint is peeling all over the exterior. While Toyota has issued recalls for white and Blizzard Pearl colors with similar paint problems, your beige paint is experiencing the same issue. The fix would involve having the affected areas sanded down and repainted by a professional.

Electrical System →3 issues
Your car's dashboard shows a "Check Charging System" warning message when you come to a complete stop, and the engine shuts off, leaving you without power. The engine restarts and works normally after you restart it, but this problem happens repeatedly. Several other warning lights also appear on your dashboard. An independent mechanic couldn't figure out what's causing it. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and repairing your vehicle's charging system, alternator, or battery connections.

Air Bags →2 issues
Your car was involved in a front and rear collision that totaled the vehicle. The airbags failed to deploy during the accident despite the severity of the impact. This is a critical safety system failure that should be investigated to determine why the airbag sensors or deployment system did not function.

During a highway collision at 66 mph with a dog, all airbags deployed except the passenger-side front airbag, which failed to inflate. This airbag malfunction is a serious safety concern, as the passenger-side front airbag should have deployed during the impact. The repair will likely require a complete airbag system diagnostic and replacement of the failed airbag unit and related sensors.

Electrical System, unknown Or Other →2 issues
Your radio system has stopped responding to input. The radio screen still powers on and shows the home screen, but none of the buttons around the radio or on the steering wheel work, and the touchscreen doesn't respond either—leaving you unable to control the radio or change the displayed clock time. The clock still displays but shows the wrong time and cannot be adjusted. A technician will likely need to diagnose the radio module's electrical connections or reprogram/replace the radio unit.

Your radio system has stopped responding to all controls—the physical buttons around the radio, the steering wheel radio controls, and the touchscreen are all non-functional. The radio display still powers on and shows the home screen, but you can't interact with it, and while the clock displays, you cannot adjust it because none of the radio controls work.

Vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
While slowly entering your garage with your foot on the brake, your car suddenly accelerated on its own and propelled you forward despite continued braking. You couldn't stop in time and hit the back wall and storage racks, causing damage to your car and garage property. This issue involved unintended acceleration that your brakes couldn't overcome.

Exterior Lighting,engine,visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your engine shuts off whenever you turn on the headlights, turn signals, or wipers — a serious safety hazard while driving. The problem started intermittently in late June 2025 and became constant by early July. A Toyota dealership diagnosed it as bad electrical grounding points (high resistance) in the front bumper area that were causing the engine to stall. The repair will likely involve cleaning or replacing the grounding connections and possibly removing the front bumper to access them.

Power Train,engine →1 issue
Your 2016 Camry's engine may consume oil excessively, losing about one quart per week under normal driving. You might notice sluggish acceleration and grinding noises before the oil level drops dangerously low, even between scheduled oil changes. In this case, worn piston rings caused complete engine failure at 130,000 miles. The fix will likely require piston ring replacement or, in severe cases, full engine overhaul or replacement.

Steering,air Bags →1 issue
While making a slight turn on the highway, your steering wheel began veering left and right uncontrollably, causing you to hit a curb twice. The airbag failed to deploy despite the heavy impact, though the airbag warning light came on afterward along with other new warning lights. This issue involves both a steering control problem and a safety system failure that should be inspected by a dealer immediately.

Structure,latches/locks/linkages →1 issue
The metal torsion bar that holds your trunk open broke and fell on you while loading groceries. After a failed repair attempt, the trunk became heavy and unstable again within minutes, creating a safety hazard. You've found reports of the same problem affecting many 2016-2015 Camry models with no recall, and repairs from Toyota dealers and body shops haven't provided a lasting solution. The fix will likely require replacing the trunk torsion bars with new Toyota OEM parts, though you may need to investigate whether a design correction is available.

Visibility →1 issue
Your rearview camera display stops working properly during sunny or rainy weather conditions while driving at various speeds. A dealer suggested the issue might be a faulty light bulb, but the problem continued even after investigation. The fix likely involves replacing the rearview camera unit, its wiring, or the display screen.

Steering →1 issue
Your Camry's steering pulled unpredictably left and right while driving straight, and the steering wheel didn't return to center after turns. These issues started 1-5 minutes into each drive and continued throughout trips. You replaced your 4-year-old battery with a new one, and the steering problem stopped, suggesting a weak battery was causing electrical issues that affected the steering system. The fix involved replacing the car battery.
