You purchased a 2017 Toyota Camry from CarMax and noticed poor fuel economy of only 17 mpg, which is lower than expected for this model. You also noticed the odometer mileage was increasing faster than your actual driving should account for. Despite having maintenance performed including oil changes, spark plugs, and tire replacements, the fuel efficiency issue persisted and the mileage discrepancy caused you financial hardship. A thorough diagnostic of the fuel system and engine components may be needed to identify why your car is not achieving normal fuel economy.

Your car's battery died completely twice in less than 8 months, despite having a new battery installed after the first failure. The starter and alternator appear to be working normally, which suggests the battery itself may be defective or there's an underlying electrical drain preventing the battery from charging properly. A technician will need to test the battery, alternator output, and electrical system to identify why the new battery won't hold a charge.

Your vehicle's odometer stopped working and is not recording mileage. Evidence suggests the odometer was tampered with before you bought it — a vehicle history report shows the car actually had around 290,000 miles, but the odometer displayed only 118,204 miles at purchase. This is a safety concern because you couldn't make informed maintenance decisions, and critical components like the engine, transmission, and brakes may have significantly more wear than you were led to believe, increasing risk of unexpected failures. Resolving this will likely require a full odometer system inspection and potential replacement, along with a thorough mechanical inspection to assess the vehicle's actual condition.

Engine →2 issues
Your engine experienced catastrophic failure due to piston pin bushings and connecting rod bushings wearing out or breaking. You may have noticed a knocking sound coming from the lower engine with no warning lights. The dealership determined the engine needs to be completely replaced rather than repaired.

Your engine is consuming oil much faster than it should. You heard an abnormal noise from the engine compartment, and when checked at the dealer, the oil level was critically low even though no warning lights came on. This excessive oil consumption needs to be diagnosed and repaired to prevent engine damage.

Service Brakes →1 issue
Your parked 2017 Toyota Camry rolled backward in the driveway while in park, causing serious injury to a family member whose foot was crushed. The vehicle failed to remain stationary despite being parked, creating a significant safety risk. The owner requests an investigation into why the vehicle moved while parked and in the brake system's holding position.

Power Train →1 issue
Your Camry's transmission Park gear may not be holding the vehicle securely on inclines. The contact reported that after shifting into Park on a sloped parking lot, the vehicle rolled backward and struck a family member, causing serious injuries to their feet and legs. This problem reportedly happened three times, suggesting a recurring issue with the Park function that should be inspected immediately. A transmission specialist will need to diagnose why the Park pawl isn't engaging properly and may need to repair or replace transmission components.

Service Brakes, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your brake warning light is on and your brakes aren't working properly, even after you've replaced all four brake pads, flushed the brake fluid, and had the dealership replace the brake sensor. You believe the issue is the brake pump based on a recall for 2018 vehicles, but Toyota hasn't confirmed this yet and you're taking the car back for another diagnostic.

Air Bags,service Brakes →1 issue
While your wife was driving at 25 MPH and pressed the brake pedal to stop, the brakes failed completely—the pedal sank to the floor and the car couldn't stop, resulting in a collision with another vehicle. The airbags did not deploy during the crash, though no one was injured. The cause hasn't been determined yet, but Toyota confirmed your vehicle's VIN is not part of a recall related to the power brake booster vacuum pump. Diagnosing this issue will likely require a mechanic to inspect the brake system components and test the brake booster function.

Steering,electrical System,air Bags →1 issue
Your car experienced multiple electrical problems while driving on the freeway, including a burning smell, radio and lights flickering on and off randomly, and warning messages appearing on screens that you couldn't control. Your dashboard shows a "check charging system" warning even though the dealer couldn't find the cause, and you've had ongoing issues with the radio not working, headlights burning out frequently, airbag warning lights staying on regardless of seat occupancy, and a loose steering wheel. The problems may be related to an electrical system failure or battery/charging system issue that needs comprehensive diagnostic testing to identify and repair.

Vehicle Speed Control →1 issue
Your 2017 Camry unexpectedly accelerated on its own while driving at 20-25 MPH, and the brakes did not respond when you pressed the pedal multiple times, causing the vehicle to crash into a building. The airbags failed to deploy during the impact. The vehicle was totaled, and you were injured and hospitalized. A fix would likely involve a thorough diagnostic of the throttle control system, brake system, and airbag sensors to identify why each safety system failed.

Air Bags →1 issue
Your car was involved in a crash where another vehicle hit the driver's side front door. The side airbags and steering wheel airbag failed to deploy during the collision, resulting in serious injuries to the driver. An independent service center confirmed the airbags did not function, and the issue was also verified by police and insurance inspectors. There were no warning lights or messages before the crash indicating an airbag system problem. Resolving this requires a complete airbag system diagnostic and likely replacement of non-functional airbag modules and sensors.

Tires →1 issue
Your four General Tire Reliatrek tires were purchased in August 2024 with a promised 65,000-mile warranty, but after only 37,603 miles of use, two tires needed replacement and the other two were considered marginal. This represents severe premature wear that suggests a manufacturer defect. Your tire manufacturer was contacted about this safety concern but offered little to no compensation. The tires have complete service records and documentation available from Toyota Greenville.

Engine And Engine Cooling →1 issue
Your 2017 Camry is making an unusual noise from the engine area, and you've noticed the oil level is abnormally low even though you had an oil service done recently. The dealer performed an oil consumption test to investigate whether your engine is burning or leaking oil faster than normal. The fix will likely involve identifying whether the engine has internal wear, a leak, or a manufacturing defect that's causing excessive oil loss.

Electrical System →1 issue
You purchased your 2017 Toyota Camry from a private seller who advertised it with 96,187 miles on the odometer. However, when you registered the vehicle with your local Department of Motor Vehicles, you discovered the previous odometer reading on file was actually 290,000 miles — a discrepancy confirmed by the Carfax report. This indicates the odometer may have been tampered with or rolled back before the sale. Addressing this will likely require contacting your local DMV, law enforcement, and potentially pursuing legal action against the seller for odometer fraud.
