NHTSA Campaign: 22V480000

Component: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS

Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain 2020-2022 4Runner vehicles equipped with 20-inch Black Gunner Wheels. The load carrying capacity modification labels are incorrect. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."

Risk: An incorrect label may lead to unintentionally overloading the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: SET will mail replacement labels to owners, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 4, 2022. Owners may contact SET's customer service at 954-429-2000. SET's number for this recall is SET22A.

Your sunroof suddenly shattered while you were driving, with glass breaking both on the inside and outside of the roof. The loud explosion-like sound startled you, and broken glass fell into the cabin, causing cuts and making you unsafe to continue driving due to concerns about more glass falling and exposure to rain and elements.

Your 4Runner's SOS emergency button has failed to connect properly—you've tried it 4 times across different days and locations but only connected once, and the representative couldn't hear you even then. The system is also draining your battery even when the car is off, defeating its purpose as a safety tool. You're locked into AT&T's cellular service through Toyota's exclusive contract, which may be contributing to the poor performance of this expensive feature.

Your sunroof suddenly shattered while you were driving, creating a large hole in the roof with no apparent cause or impact. You heard a loud bang but nothing had struck the sunroof. The repair will likely involve replacing the entire sunroof panel and checking the frame for any related damage.

Your sunroof suddenly shattered and broke into pieces without any apparent cause like rocks or debris hitting it. The glass was held together with tape to prevent it from collapsing into the cabin, and you're concerned this is a manufacturing defect with the sunroof glass itself. Fixing this will likely require sunroof glass replacement and inspection of the sunroof frame and mounting system.

While driving, a mango fell from a tree and struck your windshield, causing it to break and scatter glass pieces onto the dashboard inside your vehicle. This created a potential safety hazard with loose glass in the cabin.

criticalSUSPENSION
Filed: Apr 2024

Your 4Runner's X-REAS suspension system may fail at relatively low mileage (around 45,000 miles), causing loss of vehicle stability and control, especially at high speeds or during emergency maneuvers. This unpredictable suspension failure creates a serious safety risk that could lead to accidents. The repair will likely involve inspection and replacement of suspension components within the X-REAS system.

When you shift your 4Runner's differential from high (H4F) to low (H4L) range, the dashboard indicator light stays yellow instead of turning green like it did on your previous 4Runner model. You're concerned this yellow light indicates a warning or defect in either the differential locking mechanism or the dashboard electronics. The dealer says this yellow color is normal for this model year, but your owner's manual suggests yellow means a warning condition.

Steering2 issues
highSTEERING
Filed: May 2024

While driving at 60 mph, your electronic power steering stopped working properly, making it much harder to steer. Your mechanic found that the front timing cover was failing and leaking fluid, which affected the steering system. The issue appeared at 88,000 miles with no warning lights. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the front timing cover and refilling or replacing the power steering fluid.

Your steering wheel shakes side to side (up to 1.5 inches) when driving on highways between 58-64 mph, causing the entire vehicle to vibrate. The dealer has tried to fix this six times, including balancing and replacing tires, swapping wheels and drive shafts, and adjusting computer settings—but the problem persists and gets progressively worse. Toyota has acknowledged this as a known issue they attribute to vehicle harmonics. A mechanic will need to diagnose the root cause of the vibration, which could involve suspension components, wheel alignment, or drivetrain parts.

Service Brakes2 issues
highSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Mar 2022

Your brake pedal sinks to the floor when you come to a stop, especially after the car sits overnight or when holding steady pressure in a drive-through line. Pumping the pedal temporarily restores braking, but the pressure gradually fades, causing the vehicle to creep forward and requiring excessive pedal pressure to keep the car stopped. The dealership found nothing wrong during inspection, but the problem occurs fairly consistently.

Filed: Aug 2021

Your front brakes make a loud squealing noise when you drive in cold weather conditions. The dealership inspected the brakes but couldn't find any visible problems. You mentioned a potential Toyota technical service bulletin to them, but they said no official bulletin exists for this squealing issue on your vehicle. Addressing this may require brake pad replacement, inspection of brake hardware, or application of anti-squeal coating to the brake components.

Exterior Lighting1 issue
criticalEXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: Nov 2023

Your instrument cluster gauges light up at night even when your headlights are off, which can trick you into thinking your headlights are on when they're not. This means you could drive at night without any lights on, making it hard for other drivers to see you and creating a serious collision risk. The fix would involve reprogramming or redesigning the instrument cluster backlighting to only activate when the headlights are actually turned on.

Chest Clip, Buckle, Harness1 issue
criticalChest Clip, Buckle, Harness
Filed: Dec 2022

When you buckle your child into their car seat and tighten the straps, they don't stay locked in place — you can easily pull them back out by hand. This means the straps won't properly secure your child during driving or in a crash. The car seat buckle or harness system may need to be adjusted, replaced, or the car seat itself may need to be reinstalled or swapped out.

CrashFiled: Nov 2021

Your 4Runner was involved in a crash, and the airbags failed to deploy when needed. Additionally, the forward collision warning system did not alert the driver before the crash occurred. Both the driver and you sustained injuries that required medical attention, and the vehicle was damaged beyond repair.

CrashFiled: Feb 2021

You were driving at 40 mph when your 4Runner slid off the road and hit a tree. Your front driver's side airbag did not deploy, and no warning light appeared on your dashboard before the crash. Although you were able to drive home and didn't sustain injuries, the airbag failure is a serious safety concern that needs immediate diagnosis.

highBACK OVER PREVENTION
Filed: May 2024

Your rear-view camera stops displaying an image when you're reversing, though it sometimes works normally again. This problem happens repeatedly without any warning lights appearing on your dashboard. The issue started around 50,000 miles. Fixing this will likely involve diagnosing the camera wiring, connector, or the camera unit itself, and possibly replacing the camera or its electrical components.

highWHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Sep 2023

Your 4Runner's steering wheel shakes at certain speeds (around 67-68 mph), and the vibration is now affecting the entire vehicle, not just the steering wheel. Multiple attempts to fix this by balancing and rotating tires, replacing tires, and realigning the vehicle have only temporarily masked the problem. The issue persists despite Toyota's inspection, and a technician confirmed the shake is real and reproducible.

Steering,suspension,wheels1 issue
highSTEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
Filed: Feb 2023

Your 4Runner vibrates noticeably between 48 and 68 mph, with the worst shaking occurring in the 50-60 mph range. You've had the wheels rebalanced three times, alignment checked twice, and tires inspected by the manufacturer and an authorized retailer, including road force balancing, but the shaking persists. A Toyota service advisor indicated this is a known issue that Toyota Corporate has been contacted about. The vibration could cause premature wear on drivetrain, suspension, and steering components, and may affect vehicle control in adverse weather conditions.

NHTSA #: 11507249
Forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
mediumFORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Filed: Jul 2023

Your forward collision avoidance system is giving false alerts—the brake warning light flashes and chirps even when there's nothing in front of you on the road. This could be dangerous because you might brake unnecessarily or become confused about whether there's actually an obstacle ahead. The problem happens infrequently, and you haven't had it inspected yet. A technician will need to diagnose and possibly recalibrate the forward collision sensors or update the system software.

NHTSA #: 11533113
