NHTSA Campaign: 17V821000

Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:COLUMN SHIFT

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Ram 3500 Cab Chassis with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of less than 10,000 lbs, 2011-2017 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles, 2009-2017 Ram 1500 and 2010-2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks, all equipped with a column shifter. Pushing the brake pedal for prolonged periods when the vehicle is running and in PARK may cause the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) pin to stick in the open position. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.

Risk: Being able to shift the transmission without pushing the brake pedal and/or without a key in the ignition can increase the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle software, inspect the BTSI, and, as necessary, replace it, free of charge. The recall began February 26, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T79.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these passenger air bag inflator may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

Risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Fix: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicle until the recall repair is complete. Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began February 28, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U03.

Your airbag warning light came on while driving at 30 mph. A mechanic diagnosed that your driver's side airbag needs to be replaced and informed you this is part of a known safety recall (NHTSA Campaign 16V947000). When you contacted a dealer, they said your vehicle's VIN wasn't included in the recall list. The airbag system may not deploy properly in a crash if not repaired.

Your airbags deployed unexpectedly while you were parked and sitting in the vehicle with no warning. The sudden deployment may have caused hearing loss and continuous ringing in your ears. Your insurance company declared the vehicle a total loss, and the dealership was unable to diagnose or repair the problem. A replacement airbag control module or sensor may be needed to prevent future unintended deployments.

Your airbag warning light came on and stayed on. A Dodge dealership diagnosed a short circuit in the driver's side curtain airbag that requires replacement. The warning light has been visible for at least 2-3 years, but the vehicle was not repaired and is not covered by any recalls. Fixing this will involve replacing the faulty curtain airbag module.

While driving at highway speed, your truck made a low winding sound and then a loud banging noise from underneath, suggesting the transfer case was failing. Your husband couldn't shift into park and had to use the parking brake to stop. Inspection revealed the transfer case had essentially exploded, with gears visible and damage to the driveshaft and fuel line. The truck had apparently shifted into 4WD on its own without warning, which may have caused the transfer case failure. Repairs will likely involve replacing the transfer case, driveshaft, and fuel line components.

While driving 60-65 mph on the interstate, you heard a whining noise that quickly became a loud rumble, then felt vibrations through the floorboard. Your truck's transfer case failed catastrophically, with gears exposed and your front driveshaft bent — the truck wouldn't shift into park and you had to use the parking brake to keep it from rolling. Diagnostic codes indicated the transfer case motor was engaging 4-wheel drive on its own while you were driving. The repair will likely require a complete transfer case replacement, though parts are currently on national backorder.

Your 2010 Dodge Ram has a safety issue with the brake transmission shift interlock system, which is designed to prevent the transmission from shifting unless the brake pedal is pressed. Your ignition module connection has become loose, causing the engine to shut off while driving when you go over bumps—even small ones. The key moves slightly in the ignition, cutting power to the engine unpredictably; this happened 4 times on a recent 10-minute drive, including once at a traffic light. Restarting the truck becomes difficult when the key isn't in the exact right position, creating a serious safety risk. The fix will likely involve replacing the ignition module and/or inspecting the ignition switch assembly for wear.

Your truck's engine shuts off unexpectedly while driving at various speeds, especially after driving over bumps. You may find that wiggling the ignition key can temporarily restart the engine before it shuts off again. A dealer diagnosed a faulty ignition switch as the cause. While driving on the highway at 75 mph with a loaded bed and trailer, your truck's engine suddenly shut off, causing you to lose power steering and power brakes.
