NHTSA Campaign: 17V821000

Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:COLUMN SHIFT

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2016-2017 Ram 3500 Cab Chassis with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of less than 10,000 lbs, 2011-2017 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 Cab Chassis vehicles, 2009-2017 Ram 1500 and 2010-2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks, all equipped with a column shifter. Pushing the brake pedal for prolonged periods when the vehicle is running and in PARK may cause the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) pin to stick in the open position. With the pin in the open position, the transmission can be shifted out of PARK into any gear without pushing the brake pedal or having the key in the ignition.

Risk: Being able to shift the transmission without pushing the brake pedal and/or without a key in the ignition can increase the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.

Fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the vehicle software, inspect the BTSI, and, as necessary, replace it, free of charge. The recall began February 26, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is T79.

NHTSA Campaign: 13V529000

Component: STEERING:LINKAGES:TIE ROD ASSEMBLY

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 RAM 2500 4X4 and 3500 4X4 trucks, 2008-2012 Dodge RAM 3500 4x2 Cab Chassis, and model year 2008 Dodge RAM 1500 Mega Cab 4x4. The left tie rod assembly may break.

Risk: A failure of the tie rod assembly may result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Chrysler notified owners on January 16, 2014 that dealers would inspect vehicles and replace the steering linkage assembly, if necessary. On or about February 27, 2014, Chrysler ceased its recall remedy program due to parts quality concerns, and then re-initiated it on or about April 14, 2014. In July 2015, and under a consent order with NHTSA, the company agreed to offer owners three options for remedying their vehicles: perform the original remedy, offer to repurchase the vehicle at the fair market value plus 10%, or offer an additional incentive offer towards the purchase of a new Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, or Fiat vehicle. Chrysler will notify owners of the new recall options in a letter expected to be mailed on August 31, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N49.

Your ignition key keeps falling out of the ignition while driving, especially over bumpy roads. This happened multiple times even after reinserting the key, forcing you to coast to the side of the road each time. Although a recall exists for this issue on some 2010 Ram 2500s, your vehicle's VIN wasn't included, and dealers and mechanics haven't been able to fix it. The fix will likely involve replacing or adjusting the ignition switch assembly to ensure the key stays firmly seated.

You took your truck to a Dodge dealer to have a recall repair done on the catalytic converter and exhaust manifold. After the work was completed, you noticed the catalytic converter appeared dirty with scratches and a brownish film that didn't look new, and a second repair shop confirmed the exhaust manifold also showed rust stains and wear that suggested it wasn't actually replaced. You're concerned the dealer may not have performed the recall work as required and need verification of whether the parts were actually replaced.

Your power steering pump cap may not vent properly, causing pressure to build up inside the reservoir. When you attempt to check your steering fluid level, the pressurized fluid can suddenly spray out and cause severe burns. This owner suffered second-degree burns to their hand and neck when the fluid exploded during a routine fluid check. The fix will likely involve replacing the power steering pump cap with a properly functioning vent cap and inspecting the pump assembly for damage.

While backing out of a driveway, you heard a loud noise and suddenly lost steering control—your truck wouldn't respond to wheel input. You discovered the tie rod had completely broken off at the pitman arm connection. This type of sudden failure is dangerous because if it happens at highway speeds, you could lose all steering control and potentially crash, especially when braking causes the vehicle to pull to one side.

Filed: Dec 2020

Your truck's engine randomly stalls while you're driving with no warning, forcing you to restart it while in motion. This is especially dangerous because your truck is large, heavy, and used for work, and the manual transmission means you lose power steering and braking control when the engine dies. The problem happens unpredictably during both starting and driving. A mechanic will need to diagnose the electrical and engine systems to find what's causing the stalling.

Your truck has stalled and shut down without warning while driving, including when attempting to pull into the driveway. When you tried to restart it, the engine shut down immediately, and holding the ignition key in the ON position couldn't keep it running. This suggests a problem with fuel delivery, ignition system, or engine control that's causing the engine to lose power unexpectedly. A mechanic will need to diagnose the stalling issue, which could involve checking the fuel pump, fuel filter, ignition switch, or engine computer.

Your dashboard warning light is telling you that the exhaust system needs to perform a regeneration cycle to clean out accumulated soot. This is a normal maintenance process for diesel engines, but the warning indicates it needs to happen soon. The dealer can run a diagnostic to confirm the system status and may need to perform the regeneration cycle or service the diesel particulate filter.
