AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE INFLATOR CONNECTOR FOR THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG MAY HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY ASSEMBLED.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE DRIVER'S FRONT AIR BAG INFLATOR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN THE WEEK OF AUGUST 2, 2006. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

Both front seatbelt receivers on your Jeep aren't working properly—the seatbelts won't latch into the receivers normally and require you to push the seatbelt button first. Your dashboard seatbelt warning light stays on constantly even when the belts are fastened, and your airbag warning light has started coming on and off intermittently over the past few weeks. A repair shop diagnosed the airbag light as a problem with the driver's side seatbelt retractor spring. Fixing this will likely require replacement of the faulty seatbelt assemblies and possibly the retractor mechanism.

I OWN A USED 2006 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO 4X4. THE DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER'S SIDE SEAT BELTS ARE NOT LATCHING UNLESS I PRESS DOWN ON THE RED BUTTON. THE RED SEAT BELT INDICATOR LIGHT WON'T GO OFF AND THE AUDIBLE CHIMES CONTINUOUSLY AND WILL NOT SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE MANUAL DOES DESCRIBE A METHOD IN WHICH YOU CAN DISABLE THE SEATBELT INDICATOR CHIME. HOWEVER, TO BE ABLE TO DO THIS YOU MUST BE ABLE TO HAVE THE SEATBELT IN THE BUCKLED POSITION, WHICH THE VEHICLE IS NOT ABLE TO DETECT AS THE SEATBELTS ARE FAULTY. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE CHIME IS TO SNIP THE SEAT BELT SENSOR AND GROUND WIRES COMING FROM THE VEHICLES COMPUTER UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SEATS AND SPLICE THEM TOGETHER. THIS WILL GROUND OUT THE SENSOR BUT IT ALSO CAUSES THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT TO COME ON. SO, YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN EITHER HAVING AIRBAGS AND A NONSTOP SEATBELT INDICATOR CHIME, OR NO CHIME AND NO AIRBAGS. THIS IS TROUBLESOME.

I DO NOT FEEL SAFE WHEN I HAVE TO MANUALLY ENGAGE THE BELT HOOK INTO THE LOCK. I HAD AN ACCIDENT AND CRASHED INTO A FENCE, THE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. VEHICLE IN MOTION AT TIME. AFTER PICKING UP MY VEHICLE FROM MY LOCAL JEEP DEALER ON THE AFTERNOON OF THURSDAY AUG 27TH, WHERE IT HAD BEEN FOR A WEEK FOR SERVICE REPAIRS, ONE OF WHICH WAS THE REMOVAL OF THE CONSOLE TO REPAIR THE EMERGENCY BRAKE, I NOTICED THAT THE LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD SHOWING AIR BAG DEACTIVATED WAS ILLUMINATED. I WAS OUT OF TOWN ON VACATION UNTIL THIS LAST FRIDAY SEPT. 4TH, AND I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER THIS MORNING, AND THEY DID FIND A WIRE THAT WAS DISCONNECTED, BUT THERE WAS A SENSOR THAT HAD FAILED. THEY REFUSE TO OWN UP TO THE FACT THAT THEY DID SOMETHING DURING THE EMERGENCY BREAK REPAIR PERIOD THAT DEACTIVATED THE AIR BAGS AND TOLD ME THE $480 REPAIR TO REPLACE THE SEAT SENSOR IS MY RESPONSIBILITY. UNTIL THIS PROBLEM IS REPAIRED, I CANNOT SAFELY TRANSPORT A PASSENGER IN THAT FRONT SEAT, SO I HAVE AT THIS TIME NO CHOICE BUT TO HAVE THIS DEALER MAKE THAT REPAIR.

THIS CAN CAUSE A LOSS IN ENGINE POWER, POWERE STEERING, BRAKING ASSISTANCE AND POSSIBLE FAILURE OF AIR BAGS CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. THE INCIDENT THAT I DESCRIBE ABOVE OCCURRED ON INTERSTATE 85. I BELEIVE THAT WAS WHAT HAPPENED AS I WAS ABLE TO COAST OFF THE RAOD TO AN EXIT. SAT FOR A WHILE TRYING TO FIQURE OUT WHAT WAS WRONG FINALLY AFTER A WHILE THE CAR STARTED BACK UP AND I GOT TO MY DESTINATION. AFTER READING THE ARTICLE AND LOOKING UP MY VIN NUMBER WHICH SHOWS THIS RECALL I BELEIVE THAT IS WHAT HAPPENDED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE HAD OCCURRED SEVEN TIMES PRIOR, BUT FOR THE DRIVERS SIDE PRETENTION SENSORS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 66,300.
