NHTSA Campaign: 00V095001

Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS CAN APPLY EXCESSIVE VACUUM TO THE FUEL TANKS DURING THE CANISTER PURGE CYCLE. IF EXCESSIVE VACUUM IS APPLIED, MINOR FUEL TANK DISTORTION CAN RESULT. A SMALL CRACK COULD DEVELOP ON THE UPPER FUEL TANK SURFACE. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT WOULD THEN ILLUMINATE AND, IN SOME CASES, THE VEHICLE DRIVER MAY NOTICE A GASOLINE ODOR.

Risk: FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

Fix: DEALERS WILL PRESSURE CHECK THE VEHICLE'S FUEL TANK TO DETERMINE IF IT HAS CRACKED. IF THE FUEL TANK HAS CRACKED, IT WILL BE REPLACED.

NHTSA Campaign: 97V026000

Component: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR

THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT BREAKER ELECTRICAL CONTACTS WERE CONTAMINATED DURING ASSEMBLY.

Risk: THIS CONTAMINATION INTERFERES WITH THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT CONTINUITY AND PREVENTS THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR FROM OPERATING. INOPERATIVE WINDSHIELD WIPERS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO REDUCED VISIBILITY DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE CONTAMINANTS FROM THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT BREAKER CONTACTS.

Filed: Feb 2008

You noticed a strong gasoline smell coming from your vehicle. The dealer initially found no problems, but four years later replaced your fuel tank under a safety recall. Two years after that replacement, you were hospitalized for gasoline poisoning and discovered your fuel tank had cracked. The dealer indicated the previous recall repair should have addressed this issue, but refused to cover the new repair costs. You'll likely need to have the cracked fuel tank replaced or sealed to eliminate the gasoline odor and prevent further exposure.

You received a recall notice about your fuel tank but never brought your car to the dealer. Six months later, when you finally took it in for the recall repair, the mechanic told you the work had already been done—but you're certain it wasn't, since you never visited the dealer before. This discrepancy needs to be clarified with the dealership to confirm whether the fuel tank recall was actually completed.

Your car was repaired under a recall for a fuel smell issue inside the vehicle, but the problem persists. The dealership says they'll fix it again, but won't do it for free this time. The repair will likely involve inspecting and replacing fuel system seals, gaskets, or connections that may be leaking fuel vapor into the cabin.

Power Train3 issues
criticalPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Jul 2001

Your car suddenly lost all drive gears while driving on the highway without any warning signs. The dealer determined your transmission has completely failed, even though the transmission fluid showed no visible problems and you only have about 70,000 miles on the car. The dealer is refusing to cover the repair under warranty. A complete transmission rebuild or replacement will likely be necessary to restore your car's ability to drive.

NHTSA #: 748230
highPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Jan 2004

When you turn the ignition to start your car, the transmission locks up and causes the engine to shut off, making it difficult to restart. A mechanic confirmed the transmission has failed but was unable to fix the problem.

NHTSA #: 10053366
highPOWER TRAIN
Filed: May 2003

Your transmission slips when you release the gas pedal at high speeds and then try to accelerate again—there's a delay of at least 5 seconds before the transmission responds. You've also lost reverse gear entirely. This loss of power and gearing could be dangerous in traffic situations. You'll likely need a transmission diagnostic and repair, which may involve fluid replacement, internal transmission service, or transmission rebuild depending on what the shop finds.

NHTSA #: 10019099
Latches/locks/linkages2 issues
criticalLATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
Filed: May 2003

Your hood latch released while you were driving, causing the hood to slam against the windshield and completely block your vision on a main road. The auto body shop found that the latch, bolts, and nuts were all rusted and failed, requiring the hood to be replaced and the car to be towed. Fixing this would involve replacing the rusted hood latch assembly, bolts, and nuts with new parts.

Your driver's side door handle and window crank handle broke from normal use due to poor plastic construction. This could be a safety concern if you need to exit your car quickly in an emergency. Replacing both the interior door handle and manual window crank assembly should resolve the issue.

Your check engine light came on while driving and your vehicle stalled out. This problem kept happening even after the dealer replaced the oxygen sensor, coil pack, throttle body, and cleaned the fuel injectors multiple times. The dealer eventually found that your battery had a dead cell, which was causing the electrical issue. You'll likely need a new battery to resolve this problem.

Air Bags,structure1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS,STRUCTURE
Filed: Feb 2004

Your airbags deployed unexpectedly while driving, even though there was no collision or impact. The door handle broke around the same time. This is a serious safety concern since airbags should only deploy during actual crashes.

Suspension1 issue
criticalSUSPENSION
Filed: Jan 2004

While driving at 50 mph, your car shook heavily and you had to pull off the road. You discovered the passenger-side wheel had fallen off because one of the screws holding the strut assembly came loose and fell out. The dealer will need to reinstall the missing screw and inspect the strut assembly to ensure it's properly secured.

Suspension,structure1 issue
criticalSUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
Filed: Nov 2003

Your rear tire became loose and wobbly, accompanied by loud bumping sounds while driving. Upon inspection, the strut mounting bracket fell through a rusted hole in the car's frame. The frame rust appears to be localized to this area and has caused the rear suspension to detach from the vehicle structure, making the car unsafe to drive.

Tires1 issue
highTIRES
Filed: Jun 2008

Your car's valve stems—the small parts that hold air in your tires—keep failing and causing your tires to go flat. This has happened four times in five weeks, including incidents at 40 mph and 65 mph where the rear of your car started wobbling as the tire lost air. The tire shop suggested the rim might be bent, but you believe the issue is only with the valve stems themselves. Replacing the valve stems should fix this problem.

Your windshield wiper arm has stripped at the connection point where it attaches to the linkage. In wet weather, this causes the wipers to swing past the end of the windshield instead of staying in their normal sweep area, leaving your windshield uncleared. The connection point will likely need to be repaired or the wiper arm assembly replaced.
