NHTSA Campaign: 20V026000

Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.

Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.

Fix: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.

CrashFiled: Apr 2019

Your car was in a serious accident with both front and side impacts while driving, but neither the driver's nor passenger's airbags deployed even though both impacts were major. There were no warning lights about the airbag system before the accident occurred. The airbag system may need complete inspection and diagnosis to determine why it failed to deploy.

NHTSA #: 11203305
criticalAIR BAGS
Filed: Jul 2014

Your airbags deployed unexpectedly when driving over a bump, causing the front passenger window to shatter and injuring the passenger's face. The vehicle was never diagnosed or repaired, and Honda did not offer any assistance when contacted. A faulty airbag sensor or wiring may have triggered the deployment, requiring diagnostic testing and replacement of the airbag system components.

NHTSA #: 10610440
criticalAIR BAGS
CrashFiled: Jul 2010

Your car was involved in a head-on collision at about 40 mph when another vehicle turned in front of you in an intersection. Despite the severity of the impact — which caused significant front-end damage and coolant leakage — the airbags did not deploy when they should have. The airbag system may need to be inspected or replaced to ensure it functions properly in future accidents.

NHTSA #: 10343045

Filed: May 2014

Your SRS airbag warning light came on and won't turn off, even though you haven't been in any accident. Your Honda dealer says there's a known problem that Honda recalled, but since your car is outside the warranty period, they want to charge you $400 to fix it. The repair likely involves diagnosing and replacing faulty airbag system components or sensors.

Your car has two open recalls related to airbags and floor mats that are preventing you from shipping it overseas for military purposes. While you haven't experienced any driving or handling problems from these issues, the recalls must be resolved before the vehicle can be shipped. Completing the recalls will likely involve an airbag system inspection and possible floor mat replacement or securing mechanism.

Electrical System2 issues
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: May 2014

Your engine suddenly dies while driving at any speed, then restarts after a few moments (sometimes taking several tries). You may also notice the car jerking slightly as if it's not getting fuel. The dealer removed an old alarm system and replaced the fuel pump with genuine Honda parts, but the problem continues happening almost daily — you can't predict whether the car will start or stall. The fix may involve diagnosing the ignition system, as similar problems were recalled on later Honda models.

NHTSA #: 10586077
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Dec 2010

Your 1996 Civic wouldn't start one cold morning, and a week later it suddenly stalled and shut off while you were driving 65+ mph on the freeway. After coasting to a stop, the car was difficult to restart but eventually started again. You found that Honda issued a recall for similar electrical issues on 1997-2000 Civics and other models, but your 1996 model wasn't included, leaving you at risk with an unresolved defect.

NHTSA #: 10370496
Service Brakes1 issue
criticalSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Jan 2020

Your brake warning light came on while driving, and when you pressed the brake pedal, it went all the way to the floor with little resistance. A mechanic found that the master cylinder seal had detached, allowing brake fluid to leak into the brake booster instead of creating proper braking pressure. The repair involved replacing the master cylinder and flushing the brake system.

NHTSA #: 11302583
Vehicle Speed Control1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Filed: Aug 2014

While using cruise control set at 60 mph, you pressed the accelerator and the car continued accelerating even after you released the pedal. When you applied the brake, cruise control didn't disengage, and when you pressed the clutch, the engine kept revving higher. The engine eventually seemed to hit some limit before the cruise control finally disengaged. The fix may involve inspecting or replacing the cruise control cable, throttle linkage, or the cruise control module itself.

NHTSA #: 10627711
Air Bags,seat Belts1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
CrashFiled: Jul 2012

You were in a head-on collision and your head struck the windshield before the airbag deployed, causing a brain concussion. You believe both your seat belt with shoulder restraint and driver-side airbag failed to protect you from impact as they were designed to do. The fix would likely involve a detailed inspection and replacement of the airbag system and seat belt assembly.

NHTSA #: 10468464
Vehicle Speed Control, unknown Or Other1 issue
highVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Dec 2017

Your floor mat may be positioned in a way that interferes with your accelerator pedal while driving. If the mat shifts or isn't placed correctly, it could catch on the pedal and affect your ability to control your car's speed. Make sure your floor mat is properly secured and positioned to avoid the accelerator pedal.

NHTSA #: 11052354
Engine1 issue
highENGINE
Filed: Feb 2016

Your engine is shutting off unexpectedly while you're driving, a problem you've experienced for about a year. While newer Honda Civics have been recalled for this same issue, you haven't found any recalls listed for your 1996 model. A mechanic should diagnose the cause, which could involve fuel system components, ignition system parts, or engine control sensors.

NHTSA #: 10825029
Structure1 issue
highSTRUCTURE
Filed: Dec 2015

The metal support frame on the passenger side of your car is heavily rusted and broken at the bottom, causing the passenger-side wheel to move side-to-side easily. The owner believes the A/C drain tube was pointing directly at this frame, causing rust damage that was hidden under dark undercoating before purchase. Fixing this would likely require welding reinforcement or replacing the entire subframe, which is an expensive repair.

NHTSA #: 10816165
Fuel System, Gasoline,power Train,structure,engine1 issue
highFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE,ENGINE
Filed: Aug 2014

Your check engine light is turning on and off, and your car stutters and jerks when accelerating—though the problem doesn't always show up when mechanics check it. You've experienced the car bogging down on the highway at 50 mph, which felt unsafe. You're also aware of a recall for transmission problems and paint chipping on your model year. Diagnosing the stuttering and jerking will likely involve scanning for engine codes, checking fuel delivery components, and inspecting transmission performance.

NHTSA #: 10618839
Power Train1 issue
highPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Dec 2011

Your transmission is making noise when the clutch pedal is released, but the noise stops when you press the clutch pedal in. This suggests the input shaft bearing in your transmission may be worn or damaged. The fix will likely require replacing the transmission input shaft bearing, which typically involves removing and disassembling the transmission.

NHTSA #: 10441428
Tires1 issue
highTIRES
Filed: Dec 2010

All four of your Pirelli P3000 Cinturato tires developed cracks running around the sidewalls near the tread area, which a tire technician identified as a manufacturer's defect. If left unfixed, the tread would have separated from the tire completely. All four tires had to be replaced to keep your car safe to drive.

NHTSA #: 10371903
Equipment1 issue
highEQUIPMENT
Filed: Dec 2009

Your gas pedal became stuck against the floor mat while driving on the highway during rush hour, causing your car to accelerate uncontrollably. You were unable to slow down, so you put the car in neutral, turned on hazard lights, and safely steered to the shoulder. After removing the floor mat and driving to the dealership, they found no mechanical problem with the car, and you've avoided using a driver's side floor mat since.

NHTSA #: 10294168
Visibility1 issue
mediumVISIBILITY
Filed: May 2014

Your driver's side window keeps sliding off its track and is very difficult to raise back up, even after previous repairs. Your passenger side window sometimes won't roll up either and requires someone to manually pull it while you operate the button. The fix will likely involve inspecting and repairing the window regulator mechanism and track guides.

NHTSA #: 10586078
Exterior Lighting1 issue
mediumEXTERIOR LIGHTING
Filed: Mar 2012

Your headlight covers have become cloudy and foggy, which reduces the amount of light they produce. This can make it harder to see the road at night and may affect your visibility. The fix typically involves either polishing and resealing the headlight covers or replacing them entirely.
