TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 HONDA ODYSSEY. WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT, THE VEHICLE INDEPENDENTLY ACCELERATED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE USING THE BRAKES. THE CONTACT SHIFTED INTO PARK AND TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED AND OPERATED AS INTENDED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MAIN LINE HONDA (LOCATED AT 123 E LANCASTER AVE, ARDMORE, PA 19003, (610) 649-5600) TO BE DIAGNOSED, BUT THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO RETRIEVE A FAULT CODE OR DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE WAS INTERMITTENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,999. *TT*JB

WHILE APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT ON A CITY STREET AND APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE ENGINE STARTED TO RACE AND ACCELERATE. I HAD TO STEP VERY HARD ON THE BRAKES TO KEEP FROM ENTERING THE INTERSECTION. I GOT THE VEHICLE STOPPED, BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RACE; WHEN I SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL, THE RPMS INCREASED EVEN MORE. I THEN SHIFTED INTO PARK, AND THE RPMS FINALLY WENT DOWN. HAD I NOT STEPPED VERY HARD ON THE BRAKES AT THE START OF THE INCIDENT, I WOULD HAVE ENTERED THE INTERSECTION AND HIT OTHER CARS IN THE INTERSECTION. WHEN MY SON WAS LEARNING TO DRIVE TWO YEARS AGO, HE HAD TWO SIMILAR INCIDENTS WHEN I WAS IN THE CAR. IN BOTH CASES, AS HE WAS COMING TO A STOP IN A PARKING SPACE THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED AND HOPPED THE CURB. AT FIRST I THOUGHT HE MAY HAVE HIT THE ACCELERATOR INSTEAD OF THE BRAKE, BUT NOW I WONDER IF HE HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO HIM.

WHILE DRIVING DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY WITHOUT WARNING BEGAN TO APPLY THE BRAKES AND THE ENGINE IDLED DOWN THEN TEMPORARILY SEEMED NORMAL ONLY TO HAVE IT REOCCUR IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. THE VSA LIGHT INCLUDING THE SYMBOL AND THE INITIALS VSA BECAME ILLUMINATED. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED IT MULTIPLE TIMES ONLY TO HAVE IT REOCCUR OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I HAD JUST HAD THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACED FOR A SECOND TIME TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THIS HAPPENING. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT IN REPLACING THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER THE SERVICE CREW PUNCTURED MY RADIATOR AND HAD TO REPLACE THAT AS WELL. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO TOLD ME THE VSA SENOR CONTROL CLUSTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THEY SAID THAT THEY HAD NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE. THEY INDICATED THAT THE PART WOULD TAKE A WEEK AND A HALF TO GET THE PART WHICH SEEMS VERY STRANGE. THE COST FOR THE PART IS $500 AND THE INSTALLATION WILL BE $276.25. *TR

VSA (VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST) MODULATOR FAILED UPON ENGINE START UP IN A HONDA ODYSSEY MINI-VAN WITH JUST OVER 19,000 TOTAL MILES. DOWNLOADED DIAGNOSTIC CODE CONFIRMED FAILURE OF THE VSA MODULATOR. VSA FAILURE ALSO MEANS LOSS OF ABS FUNCTION ON THE BRAKES. COMPONENT PRICE IS NEARLY $1000. THIS IS A VERY EXPENSIVE COMPONENT FAILURE AFTER VERY LITTLE ACTUAL USE OF THE VAN. VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY BASED ON ELAPSED TIME. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT EARLY (LOW MILEAGE) VSA MODULATOR FAILURES ARE VERY COMMON IN HONDA ODYSSEYS AND OTHER HONDA VEHICLES. *TR

I WAS DRIVING WITH MY CHILDREN IN MY 2005 HONDA ODYSSEY TOURING EDITION. I HAD DRIVEN FOR 20 MINUTES, AND ACCELERATED TO PASS A SLOW-MOVING TRUCK. MY ACCELERATOR STUCK. I STOOD ON THE BRAKES BUT COULD NOT STOP. FINALLY, I THREW ON MY EMERGENCY BRAKE, AND I WAS ABLE TO PULL ONTO THE SHOULDER AND THROW MY CAR INTO PARK. IT WAS A VERY NEAR MISS, AND I FEEL LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR REPAIRS TO JL FREED HONDA, THE SAME DEALERSHIP WHERE I HAD PURCHASED THE CAR. THEY DETERMINED THAT THE STUCK ACCELERATOR WAS CAUSED BY THE GAS PEDAL BEING STUCK UNDER THE FLOOR MAT. THREE PEOPLE EXPLAINED IT THREE DIFFERENT WAYS TO ME. ONE PERSON SAID THAT MY HONDA-ISSUED ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MAT WAS INCORRECTLY INSTALLED ON TOP OF THE CARPET MAT. BOTH WERE ISSUED AND INSTALLED BY JL FREED. INSINUATION WAS THAT THEY SHOULD HAVE REMOVED THE CARPETED MAT. THE SECOND PERSON TOLD ME THAT MY ALL-WEATHER MAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ANCHORED. THIS WAS NEVER AN OPTION THAT HAD BEEN OFFERED TO ME AND AGAIN, WOULD INDICATE FAULT ON THE PART OF HONDA. FINALLY, I WAS TOLD THAT I MYSELF HAD INCORRECTLY INSTALLED THE MAT, WHICH GOES ACROSS BOTH FRONT SEATS AND AROUND THE FRONT CONSOLE. I ASKED IF THEY WERE CONCERNED THAT THIS MIGHT HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE, AND THEY SAID NO. THEY ALSO NEGLECTED TO CHECK MY CAR FOR ANY DAMAGE THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN INCURRED BY STANDING ON THE BRAKES AT FULL ACCELERATION AND/OR USING THE PARKING BRAKE AND THROWING MY CAR INTO PARK WHILE MOVING. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I WAS NOT SATISFIED WITH THE OUTCOME AND NOW NO LONGER TRUST HONDA. *TR

THE DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED BUT COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. HE ALSO STATED THAT THE FAILURE OCCURRED 3 TIMES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 83,000.

I ACCELERATED TO PASS A TRUCK WHILE ON THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE. MY ACCELERATOR STUCK DOING 60. I COULD NOT RELEASE IT BY STEPPING ON BREAK OR PUMPING IT. I NOTICED THAT MY CRUISE CONTROL HAD TURNED ITSELF ON. I TURNED IT OFF. I STOOD WITH ALL MY WEIGHT ON THE BRAKE AND SLOWED DOWN ONLY MARGINALLY. I PULLED ON THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND SLOWED DOWN TO ABOUT 20, WHERE I WAS ABLE TO THROW IT IN PARK AND STOP. FORTUNATELY, NO ONE WAS HURT. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT CAUSED THE ACCELERATOR IN MY 2005 HONDA ODYSSEY TO STICK. I DIDN'T REPORT TO POLICE, BUT TO 911, BECAUSE I NEEDED ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE. *TR

I WAS DRIVING MY 2005 HONDA ODYSSEY TODAY AND AS I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE (ABOUT 5 MPH) AT A DRUG STORE AND COMING TO A STOP, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED (JUMPED) FORWARD. HAD I NOT ALREADY HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE I WOULD HAVE HIT A RACK OF PROPANE TANKS! THE CAR TRAVELED ABOUT 4 FT FROM ACCELERATION START TO STOPPING AND IT ROLLED OVER THE CURB. MY HARD BRAKING LEFT A FOOT OF TIRE TREAD MARKS ON THE CONCRETE SIDEWALK FROM THE FRONT WHEELS. I ALWAYS KEEP THE CRUISE CONTROL (CC) OFF WHEN DRIVING LOCALLY BUT AFTER I STOPPED THE CAR, I NOTICED THE CC WAS ON. I DID NOT TURN IT ON AND DO NOT KNOW HOW IT ACTIVATED. I WANT A RECORD OF THE EVENT. IT LEFT ME SHAKEN AND WANT TO INSURE THAT IF THERE ARE OTHER REPORTS TO NTHSA ACTIONS BE TAKEN TO ADVISE OWNERS OF THE PROBLEM. DROVE TO OTHER LOCATIONS WITHOUT FURTHER PROBLEMS. I INTEND TO ADVISE LOCAL HONDA DEALER AND HONDA CORPORATE AS WELL. *TR

I WAS TRAVELING AT ABOUT 60 MPH IN THE FAR LEFT LANE ON 490 W IN ROCHESTER NY ON SATURDAY MAY 12, 2007 WHEN I FELT THE ACCELERATOR PULLED AWAY FROM MY FOOT. THE CAR PROCEED TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. I LOOKED AT THE DASH TO SEE IF THE CRUISE-CONTROL HAD SOMEHOW COME ON BUT IT HAD NOT. I THEN TAPPED THE BRAKE TO SEE IF THE ACCELERATION WOULD BACK OFF. IT DID NOT AND I WAS NOW MOVING AT ABOUT 80 MPH WITH THE ENGINE REVVING OVER 5000 RPMS . I PROCEED TO APPLY THE BRAKE VERY HARD WITH ONE FEET AND THEN BOTH FEET TO PREVENT FROM DRIVING INTO THE BACK OF THE CARS IN FRONT OF ME. I WAS LITERALLY STANDING ON THE BRAKE WITH BOTH FEET TO TRY TO NEGATE SOME OF THE SPEED. THE CAR WAS GOING OVER 90 MPH WHEN I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RODE AND DRIVE OFF THE ROAD. ONCE I GOT TO THE SHOULDER, I JAMMED THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE MADE A LOUD GRINDING NOISE FOR A PERIOD AS I CONTINUED SPEEDING DOWN THE SHOULDER. IT FINALLY STOPPED REVVING ,AND I WAS THEN ABLE TO STOP AND PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK. MY HUSBAND REPORTED TO ME THAT A SIMILAR THING HAPPENED TO HIM LAST WEEK WHEN BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY.*AK THE FLAT BED DRIVER REPORTED TO THE DEALER THAT THE VEHICLE SPEEDOMETER READ 40 MPH WHEN HE WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ONTO THE FLAT BED, YET THE VEHICLE WAS NOT GOING THAT FAST.
