STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE

HONDA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005 ODYSSEY TOURING VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH POWER OPERATED REAR LIFTGATE. THE POWER LIFTGATE GAS STRUTS MAY DETERIORATE UNEXPECTEDLY EARLY. STRUTS THAT HAVE WORN OUT PREMATURELY MAY FAIL TO HOLD THE POWER LIFTGATE IN THE FULLY OPEN POSITION, CAUSING THE POWER LIFTGATE TO CLOSE UNEXPECTEDLY.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE GAS LIFTGATE STRUTS AND REPLACE IF WITHIN THE RECALL POPULATION. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE CAMPAIGN BEGAN ON MARCH 26, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA AUTOMOBILE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-999-1009.

Your driver's side sliding door fell off its tracks and can no longer be used. When this happened, it also damaged the side of your van, the gas filler door, and made your rear door hard to close—you can't always tell if it's fully shut without checking the indicator light inside. Additionally, your car alarm goes off on its own even though it's been disabled. Getting the door back on track and addressing the related damage will likely require professional service to realign the door tracks, repair the gouged body panel, and check the alarm system.

THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN FROM EITHER THE INSIDE OR OUTSIDE LATCH EVEN THOUGH UNLOCKED AS THE DOOR LOCK KNOB WAS UP. THIS PROBLEM WAS OBSERVED ABOUT MID DECEMBER 2019. TOOK IT TO A HONDA DEALER, SOUTH TACOMA HONDA, AND THEY COULD NOT OPEN THE DOOR EITHER. THEY SAID THE INTERIOR PANEL WOULD NEED TO BE DESTROYED TO ACCESS THE MECHANISMS AND REPAIR. HAD THE REPAIR DONE BY SOUTH TACOMA HONDA WHO REPLACED THE INTERIOR DOOR PANEL BECAUSE THEY HAD TO TEAR IT OUT, LATCH AND ACTUATOR FOR $1,092.56. THEY DID NOT KNOW WHY THE ACTUATOR AND LATCH FAILED. I'M CONCERNED THIS COULD OCCUR WITH THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR TOO. IT'S A SAFETY ISSUE IF THE DOOR(S) WON'T OPEN.

I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN MY HOOD FLEW UP AND SHATTERED MY WINDSHIELD. AFTER INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE HOOD LATCH MECHANISM HAD SCREWS MISSING AND ONE SCREW VERY LOOSE LEFT IN PLACE. THE HOOD LATCH MECHANISM FREELY MOVED AROUND WHICH IS APPARENTLY HOW THE HOOD BECAME UNLATCHED AND BROKE THE WINDSHIELD. ON THE INTERSTATE DOING 50MPH ON THE MARQUETTE INTERCHANGE THIS CREATED AN UNSAFE CONDITION BECAUSE I WAS UNABLE TO SEE ANYTHING ONCE THE HOOD WAS UP AND HAD TO BRAKE IMMEDIATELY TO KEEP FROM CRASHING INTO ANYTHING POSSIBLY IN FRONT OF ME. THIS ALSO COULD HAVE CAUSED SOMEONE ELSE TO CRASH INTO ME. I ALSO COULDN'T SEE DUE TO THE HOOD. I HAD TO USE MY SIDE WINDOW AND MIRRORS TO MANEUVER MYSELF TO THE EMERGENCY LANE, TIE THE HOOD DOWN WITH A CORD. HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? HOW DO SCREWS LOOSEN ON THE LATCH TO THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE?

MESSAGE STAYS ON DASHBOARD PREVENTING ME FROM SEEING OTHER IMPORTANT MESSAGES UNTIL A RESET IS DONE, I RESET BY REMOVING A FUSE, TURNING THE KEY TWICE WITHOUT TURNING THE CAR ON AND PUTTING THE FUSE BACK IN. THAT'S A TEMPORARY FIX BECAUSE THE PROBLEM RETURNS AFTER OPENING AND CLOSING THE DOOR A COUPLE OF TIMES. MANY HONDA OWNERS HAVE REPORTED THIS PROBLEM TO HONDA AND INDICATED ONLINE THE SAME PROBLEM WHICH INVOLVED COSTLY REPAIRS THAT SOMETIMES DOESN'T CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THIS IS AND HAS HAPPENED TO ENOUGH OWNERS OF HONDA MINIVANS THAT A RECALL IS NECESSARY.

THIS IS A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION ESPECIALLY IF PASSENGERS ARE IN THE SECOND SEATING ROW. THIS HAPPENED BY ITSELF OVER THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE - I CANNOT PIN AN EXACT ACTION THAT MADE THIS OCCUR OTHER THAN REPEATED USAGE. IN ORDER TO KEEP THE DOOR FROM REOPENING, I HAD TO REMOVE THE FUSE (#7) THAT CONTROLS THE POWER SLIDING DOORS. NOW ONLY THE PASSENGER SLIDING DOOR IS USED AND MUST BE OPERATED MANUALLY. ALSO REMOTE POWER LOCKS HAVE BEEN DISABLED BECAUSE OF REMOVAL OF THE FUSE. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

THE SLIDING DOOR KEPT OPENING UP "VOLUNTARILY" ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS PUT BACK IN MOTION / DRIVE MODE (ATTEMPT TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE). THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE DRIVEN BACK HOME, ITS NORMAL PARKING LOCATION, WITH THE SLIDING DOOR OPEN DURING THE DRIVE (APPROXIMATELY 10 MILES FROM HOME).

SEEMS RIDICULOUS AND TIME FOR A RECALL. CUSTOMER SERVICE REP SAID THAT IT WAS MY CAR AND THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE TO REPAIR IT. I SAID THAT COINCIDENTALLY I JUST HAD MY VAN IN FOR A RECALL (FUEL PUMP - WAS SMELLING GAS WHILE DRIVING IT) SO THAT'S NOT ENTIRELY TRUE. SOME THINGS THEY DO FIX FOR FREE. THIS SEEMS LIKE A MAJOR PROBLEM. I OPENED THE DOOR FOR MY 9-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER TO GET INTO THE CAR. WHAT IS THE DOOR FELL ON HER?

THERE WAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY OFFERED FOR THIS PROBLEM A FEW YEARS AGO AND HAS SINCE EXPIRED, BUT AT THE TIME OF THE WARRANTY WE DID NOT NOTICE A PROBLEM. IT NOW HAS 60% PAINT LOSS ON THE ROOF AND PATCHES AS LARGE AS A HAND ON THE BODY ARE PEELING. VAN IS GARAGE KEPT AND WELL MAINTAINED. I WAS AT THE BUS STOP WITH MY CHILDREN AND THE DOOR FELL OFF AS I OPENED THE DOOR TO HELP MY CHILD OUT. I WAS MORTIFIED AS YOU MIGHT IMAGINE. TWO MEN CAME TO MY RESCUE JUST AFTER MY SON JUMPED OUT OF THE WAY. THE DOOR HAS CONCERNED ME FOR SOME TIME BUT I NEVER HEARD OF A SLIDING DOOR FALLING OFF NOR DID THE DEALER MENTION IT. PREVIOUSLY, THE DOOR WOULD CLICK WHEN WE CLOSED IT AND THE AUTOMATIC DOOR WOULD BEEP AND FAIL TO CLOSE. WE HAD THE DOOR CHECKED DURING A ROUTINE SERVICE APPOINTMENT 2-3 YEARS AGO. THE DEALER SAID IT WAS A SENSOR OR POSSIBLY A MOTOR ISSUE. NO ONE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE DOOR POSSIBLY FALLING OFF - NOR DID THEY MENTION ANY POTENTIAL BRACKET FAILURE. I WOULD HAVE HAD THAT BRACKET FIXED HAD THEY EVEN HINTED THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN. BUT WHAT'S ALSO VERY DISTURBING IS THAT A FRIEND WITH AN '07 IS HAVING SIGNIFICANT PROBLEMS WITH HER DOORS AS WELL. AFTER MY INCIDENT, SHE IMMEDIATELY WENT AND HAD HER DOOR BRACKETS CHECKED AND FOUND HERS WERE ALSO IMMINENTLY CLOSE TO COMPLETE FAILURE. THEY WERE REPLACED. OVER THE YEARS I'VE OBSERVED THAT THIS FAILURE HAPPENS WHENEVER THE VEHICLE IS PARKED ON A NOTICEABLE INCLINE. I SUGGESTED TO THE HONDA SERVICE MANAGER THAT SOME MECHANICAL PART MAY BE LOOSE, CAUSING BINDING IN THE TRACK, BUT HE ALWAYS REPORTED THAT EVERYTHING ABOUT THE MECHANISM WAS "FINE". I DISCOVERED TODAY THAT NHTSA ACTION NUMBER 10016777 AND HONDA SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER 204110 WERE ISSUED IN 2005, RELATING TO THIS PROBLEM. THE HONDA DEALER WAS, OR SHOULD HAVE BEEN, AWARE OF THE DEFECT EACH TIME I RETURNED TO THEM TO FIX IT UNDER WARRANTY. WE VISIT OUR RELATIVES IN ARIZONA AT LEAST ONCE EVERY YEAR AND CANNOT AFFORD TO HAVE DOOR ISSUES ON OUR ALMOST 3,000 MILE ROUND TRIP. WE'VE HAD THE LEFT SIDE SLIDING DOOR ON OUR 2005 HONDA ODYSSEY FAIL TO CLOSE NUMEROUS TIMES OVER THE PAST 3 YEARS. THE DEALER HAS 'FIXED' IT AT LEAST FOUR TIMES IN THE PAST THREE YEARS. MOST RECENTLY, WHILE RETURNING FROM A TRIP TO FLORIDA, THE DOOR FAILED TO CLOSE AT A REST STOP. IN ATTEMPTING TO CLOSE THE DOOR MANUALLY, THE 'SLIDING SPRING' BROKE AND THE DOOR SLIPPED OFF THE TRACK. WE HAD TO LIFT THE DOOR AND SLIDE IT SHUT. WHEN THE SPRING BROKE, THE WEIGHT OF THE DOOR CAUSED THE SLIDING TRACK TO BE DENTED OUTWARD. OUR FEAR IS THAT THE DOOR CAN SLIDE OFF THE TRACK AND FALL AT ANY TIME SINCE THERE'S NOTHING TO HOLD IT IN. WE FEEL THAT THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING TO ANY CAR MUCH LESS A 3 YEAR OLD VEHICLE. WE CONTACTED BOTH HONDA AND THE DEALER. WE'RE BEING CHARGED $95.00 FOR THE DEALER TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM AND MAY BE CHARGED THE FULL COST OF REPAIRING THE DOOR. THE DEALER HAS INDICATED THAT IN ORDER TO PROPERLY DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, THE DOOR MUST BE REMOVED COMPLETELY. THIS IS A MAJOR REPAIR THAT CAN RUN INTO SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS. THERE WERE NO EVENTS LEADING TO FAILURE. FAILURE OF THE REAR DOOR SUPPORT STRUT WAS SUDDEN. ONE OF THE STRUT FAILED IMMEDIATELY. UPON RESEARCH ON INTERNET, FOUND THAT STRUT MAKING SOUND MOST LIKELY HAD A FAILED SEAL AND INERT GAS HAD ESCAPED. APPEARED SIMILAR TO RECALL ISSUE WITH TOYOTA SIENNA'S. HONDA MFG HAD NO RECALL ISSUE WITH THE FAILURE OF THE STRUT. UPON CONTACT WITH LOCAL HONDA DISTRIBUTOR FIRST HONDA IN SIMI VALLEY, BECAUSE CAR HAD 37K MILES IT HAD GONE BEYOND THE 36K WARRANTY FOR THE VEHICLE. COST FOR MATERIAL AND LABOR TO REPAIR THE STRUT WAS $170K MATERIAL $110 AND LABOR $60 APPROX. THE ACTUAL REPAIR WORK TOOK 10 - 15 MINUTES. VAN IS USED TO TRANSPORT SMALL CHILDREN AND THE FAILURE OF THE ONE, MADE OWNER- MOM VERY DIFFICULT TO PUT IN AND REMOVE- STROLLERS USED AND STORED IN BACK OF VEHICLE. IF FAILURE HAD BEEN WHILE PUTTING ITEMS IN AND OUT OF THE REAR, THE HEAVY WEIGHT OF THE DOOR WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN SERIOUS INJURY. *TR

HIS LEFT HAND WAS CAUGHT AT THE BACK EDGE OF THE DOOR BETWEEN THE WEATHERSTRIP AND THE DOOR ITSELF. I HAD TO OPEN THE DOOR WITH THE DASH MOUNTED BUTTON TO RELEASE HIS HAND. UPON EXAMINATION BY HIS MOTHER AND ME, ONE OF HIS FINGERS WAS SCRATCHED A BIT AND THEY HURT, BUT NO INDICATIONS OF MORE SERIOUS INJURY, THANKS TO GOD. THE DEALERSHIP HAS TRIED FOR 3 MONTHS TO TRY TO FIND AN ALTERNATE VEHICLE FOR ME. HOWEVER, AMERICAN HONDA SAID THEY WOULD DO NOTHING AND THE VEHICLE DESIGN IS NOT DEFECTIVE, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE HEARD SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM OTHERS.
