FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles with a 2.0L GDI or 2.0L GTDI engine. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in fuel vapor management system.

Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began August 19, 2019. Owners may contact Ford Customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S32. Note: Until the vehicle is serviced for this concern, owners are advised to keep the fuel tank at least halfway full.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012 and 2017 Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI gasoline engines and 2013-2014 Focus ST vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines, previously recalled under 18V-735. The affected vehicles did not have the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) updated as intended. Therefore, the Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system.

Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began July 29, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S22.

About a year after getting a software update (program #24N07) installed in December 2024, your 2012 Ford Focus started stalling when you slowed down to a stop or right after refueling. You had to replace the purge valve yourself again, even though the dealership had already repaired this component previously.

Additionally, while operating the vehicle, the fuel gauge malfunctioned and displayed inaccurate fuel information. The contact stated that the fuel gauge incorrectly displayed a full fuel tank; however, the contact stated that the vehicle stalled. The tow service was called to the scene and discovered that there was no fuel in the fuel tank. The tow service added fuel and the vehicle restarted and operated normally. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the fuel tank, fuel gasket, and canister purge valve were faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 127,255.

For almost 5 years everytime I fill my gas tank the fumes leak from my car. About 2 days ago the tank started leaking gas from a huge crack in the tank. I told the Ford service center about this issue and they said that my individual car wasn't under the recall (for this exact issue) so they can only look at it and see what they can do. I know of a few other Focus models (a little newer than my 2012) who have also experienced this issue as well whose cars was not under the recall. Just in the 10 minute and less than 15 mile drive from my house to the service center I saw my fuel gauge go from 275 miles to 223, not to mention about 4 days ago I went to fuel up and when I got home my tank was at 330 miles and I haven't left my house since I fueled up (except going to the service center). I called the Ford Customer Center and ws told to fill out this form and to see about a recall approval for my car for this issue.

My check engine light went on and off for a while, and every time I filled up with gas my car would not start. I would have to turn it off and then on again in order to get it to run. I have attached details of the repair, which were a specific 2012 Ford Focus recall that my car had not been included in. Since this repair, my car’s fuel tank still does not function properly. My fuel gauge is faulty, which is dangerous because I could run out of gas at any moment even if it appears to be half full. My fuel tank is not pressurized enough to push enough gas into the tank to run as it should (I may have worded that wrong, but I am repeating what [XXX] has told me). My car is often displaying a pending P1450 (unable to bleed up fuel tank vacuum) check engine light code. Whenever, I fill my car with gas, it take a few tries to get the car to start. My car has also lost power several times while driving without warning - and took a while to re-start. I had to have my fuel tank replaced as it deformed and leaked gas to the point where it was un-fixable. Car symptoms of not starting after being filled with gas and losing power at random times while in operation have not been solved with the replacement of a brand new fuel tank. The P1450 error code still continues to come up suggesting a purge valve problem that will be expensive to fix, in addition to the fuel tank that has already needed to be replaced.

The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed with a quarter tank of fuel; the vehicle shut off as the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. I previously had the 18S32 recall done. They said everything was fine even though ever since I had the tank, purge valve and computer retooling done it never drove right. It didn’t have accurate miles to empty and never seemed like it used to before all this was done. 2 months ago the car stalled while driving below 30mph. I pulled the car over and turned it off. I tried turning it back on multiple times and it didn’t work until finally I got it back on but it had a check engine light. It wouldn’t shift right and check engine light kept coming back on. We got it checked out and the Ford service center claimed it was the transmission and engine. We didn’t have it fixed then and we took it back home the check engine light never came back on. This last week 10/11/21 the car started smelling like fuel outside the car and wouldn’t accelerate well. Took it into the Ford Service center at a different location and they confirmed it was the fuel canister leaking and the fuel line to the fuel insert point was messed up. I noticed they had performed recall 18S32 on it before but it never fixed the issue and they did a 2nd recall on some vehicles because of it called 19S22. The Ford service center and customer care both said they can’t perform 19S22 recall because it doesn’t show up on my VIN number as needing done even though clearly I’m still having issues with the fuel system that was recalled in the first place. I’m now going to have to pay out of pocket for an issue Ford should be covering under recall work.

I was given engine codes P144A and P1450. Whenever I fill up my gas tank completely I have to turn the key multiple times to actually get the car to start. The lower the tank is before the fill up, the more times I have to turn the key to eventually get it to start. Everytime I turn and it stalls I pray that it doesn't blow up. It will make the quick triplet sound and then won't "vroom." The component to be complained about is the Engine/Fuel system, and it is available for inspection upon request. Well for 1 I wasn't sure if this stalling would occur while actually driving, and based off of online research it could happen, and 2 as I said previously I was genuinely worried whether or not the car would blow up, let alone start. I have seen a recall regarding this issue to other cars with the exact same make, model, and engine type dating back to 2019, but for some reason the recall isn't covered under my vehicle's specific VIN. The component has not been inspected yet because I am hoping to find a way to have the recall cover my vehicle so I don't have to pay as much for it. There hasn't been an exact "failure" more of a problem with unknown consequences. The light first appeared probably about 6 months ago, but the initial engine codes I got (I have since gotten them twice more, the most recent being about a month and a half ago) indicated that the only problem I MAY experience was incorrect display of gas on the dash. I didn't notice it at all, so I figured it wasn't that serious nor a safety concern.

CEL came on while I was traveling. When I took my car to get it read, the error code was p1450, unable to bleed up fuel tank vacuum. After filling up my car with gas, it would struggle to turn on. I would have to push down on the accelerator while turning the ignition so that my car would start properly. Even then it still felt like it was stalling and wanted to turn off. I am aware that this issue was part of another recall related to my gas tank becoming deformed. I wound up replacing the vapor canister purge solenoid and that seems to have fixed the problem.

Somethings going on with the Fuel injectors when I’m at a red light it seems like the car is ready to turn off. When the light turned green and I try to accelerate it jerks.. I went to for dealership (Ford) they stated it was the transmission brackets m, so I got that fix. but that’s wasn’t it so I decided To look up the recall information it shows that these cars have issues with the fuel injectors and the vacuum So ect. I keep putting it in the shop and they keep telling me different things and at this point I’m getting tired of paying money for something that isn’t the issue I Call Myself buying a car for my son to head off to college (upper state NY) 2nd year but I have to make sure it’s safe for him to travel I have been broken down thank god for Triple A and at this point I’m out of options attach is a recall sheet that came with the warranty I’m looking to purchase

The first incident occurred at a gas station. I filled my tank, turned my car on and put my car in drive as usual. As I took my foot off the brake, my car started to roll backwards. There was no dashboard lights on at this time. As I was driving home, the check engine light came on. I went home to research places to take my car to be checked. I left back out and when I started my car, the check engine light was no longer on. I restarted my car several times and drove back and forth to see if the light would come back on and it did not. The light did not come back on for about 2 weeks and when it did, my car stopped while I was driving. I was able to restart it but it was scary having my car stop while driving. I filled up my tank this morning and when I tried to start it, it did not start. It did start after a second try.

THIS IS A PROBLEM RELATED TO SAFETY RECALL 18S32. FORD FOCUS 2012 STALLED AND SHUT OFF WHILE BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY AND WOULDN'T TURN BACK ON. I WENT TO AN INDEPENDENT CAR SHOP AND WAS TOLD THE PURGE VALVE MALFUNCTIONED AND CAUSED THE GAS TANK TO DEFORM. I CALLED MY FORD DEALER AND REQUESTED THEM TO REPLACE THE PARTS BECAUSE IT WAS THE SAME PROBLEM FROM THE 2018 RECALL. THEY CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS THE SAME ISSUE BUT SAID THEY WOULDN'T REPLACE THE PARTS FOR FREE BECAUSE THEY ALREADY CLOSED THE RECALL. HOWEVER, WHEN THEY CLOSED THE RECALL FOR ME IN 2019, THEY DIDN'T TELL ME THAT THEY ONLY REPROGRAMMED AND DIDN'T ACTUALLY REPLACE THE PARTS. IF THEY HAD REPLACED THE PARTS IN 2019, THEY WOULDN'T HAVE MALFUNCTIONED NOW. OBVIOUSLY THE FORD DEALER MUST HAVE MADE A MISTAKE WHEN ATTEMPTING TO REPAIR MY CAR AND DIDN'T ACTUALLY FIX IT. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE FOR FORD CARS BECAUSE THE CAR CAN STALL AND TURN OFF AT ANY TIME. EVEN IF THEY FIXED IT BACK IN 2019 (WHICH OBVIOUSLY THEY DIDN'T), IT'S NOT WORKING NOW, MEANING THEY NEED TO DO ANOTHER RECALL AND ACTUALLY SOLVE THE PROBLEM. AFTER TALKING WITH FORD MOTOR COMPANY THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT THIS IS THEIR POLICY. MY OPINION IS THAT THE PART SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED ON THE FIRST VISIT. NO WHERE ON THE INVOICE DOES IT SAY THE FUEL TANK WAS INSPECTED. I RECEIVED CAR BACK AND I HAD RUN OUT OF FUEL TWICE (WITH GAUGE SAYING ATLEAST 50+ MILES TO EMPTY) OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS. I HAVE ANOTHER RECALL FOR THE DOOR LOCKS AND AFTER TALKING WITH DEALERSHIP WE AGREED TO SCHEDULE A DATE WHERE AS FORD COULD GIVE A LOANER CAR SO THAT THE DEALERSHIP COULD ADDRESS BOTH ISSUES. A WEEK LATER I WAS TOLD THAT THE FUEL TANK IS DEFORMED AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT BUT FORD WOULD NOT PAY FOR IT?? I WAS GIVEN EMAIL THAT FORD WILL NOT GO BACK TO OPEN THE CASE ABOUT TANK RECALL BECAUSE THEY FEEL I AM NOT A " LONG TERM VALUE (LTV) CUSTOMER" ? IT WAS CHECKED AND DETERMINED TO BE FINE; BUT 30-45 DAYS AFTER MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND IT BEGAN STALLING WHEN STARTING, ESPECIALLY AFTER I WOULD FILL UP MY GAS TANK. THE INITIAL RECALL SAID IT WOULD REPLACE FAULTY PURGE VALVES RELATED TO THE RECALL BUT SINCE MY CAR WAS CHECKED ALREADY THAT I HAD TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. MY SPOUSE ALSO HAS FORD FOCUS AND HIS WAS RECALLED A SECOND TIME FOR THE PURGE VALVE BUT MINE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE SECOND RECALL. I THINK IT HAD BEEN MALFUNCTIONING FOR YEARS. TODAY (1/2/20) WE TOOL THE VEHICLE TO PRATER FOR INSPECTION UNDER THE RECAL. THEY CONFIRMED THE CODE P1450 (CANISTER PURGE VALVE) WAS INFACT THE PROBLEM RELATED TO THE RECAL, HOWEVER, THEY REFUSED TO PERFORM THE WORK BECAUSE FORD DENIED THEIR REPAIR ORDER REQUEST (#093013) CITING THE RECALL HAD ALREADY PREVIOUSLY BEEN SERVIED. I CALLED FORD AND THEY CONFIRMED. THEREFORE, WHEN WORK WASN'T NEEDED THEY "SERVICED" THE VEHICLE, HOWEVER, WHEN THE REAL ISSUE PRESENTED ITSELF THEY REFUSE TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. WE ARE CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF THE OCCUPANTS, INCLUDING OUR TWO CHILDREN, AS THE PROBLEM CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH. I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, AT FREEWAYS SPEEDS (APPROXIMATELY 65MPH), MY CAR'S ENGINE SPONTANEOUSLY STALLED AND SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL, ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS WENT ON, AND BOTH THE ENGINE AND BRAKES STOPPED WORKING. WHILE STILL MOVING AT FREEWAY SPEEDS, I COULD NOT GET THE CAR ENGINE TO TURN BACK ON OR GET THE TRANSMISSION TO RE-ENGAGE OUT OF NEUTRAL, AND THE BRAKES CONTINUED TO NOT WORK. THE BRAKE PEDAL FELT JAMMED, AS IF THERE WAS A POWER FAILURE IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM; I COULD NOT GET THE PEDAL TO MOVE. I WAS ABLE TO COAST WITHOUT POWER TO AN OFF-RAMP (I WAS STILL TRAVELING >45 MPH ON THE OFF-RAMP), AND THEN USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP ONCE ON A SURFACE STREET. AFTER LETTING THE CAR SIT FOR A FEW MINUTES, I TURNED IT BACK ON, AND THE PROBLEM DID NOT RETURN. I DROVE THE REST OF THE WAY HOME ON SURFACE STREETS. FOLLOWING UP ON THIS, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON; AN AUTO SHOP REPLACED THE EVAP PURGE VALVE ASSEMBLY AND OXYGEN SENSOR (SEE ATTACHED REPAIR INVOICE) AND THAT SOLVED THE PROBLEM. BASED ON THIS EXPERIENCE, IT SEEMS LIKE THE CAR STOPPED DUE TO AN ISSUE WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM, MAKING THE FUEL/AIR RATIO IN THE ENGINE TOO LEAN. I DO NOT KNOW WHY THE BRAKES ALSO STOPPED WORKING. I FEEL VERY FORTUNATE THAT THIS OCCURRED AT NIGHT WHEN THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC ON THE FREEWAY. IF THERE WERE OTHER CARS ON THE ROAD, THIS WOULD HAVE CERTAINLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT AS I COULD NOT SAFELY ACCELERATE OR BRAKE. I WAS TRAVELING ON AN INTERSTATE IN MY 2012 FORD FOCUS 5 DOOR HATCHBACK ON A TRIP WITH MY SON. MY CAR HAD A HALF TANK OF GAS REMAINING, SO I REFUELED. I HAD TO TRAVEL 100 MILES HOME, I NOTICED THE DISTANCE TO EMPTY ONLY CHANGED 20 MILES OR SO. SO FROM 436 MILES TO 416 MILES TO EMPTY. THE NEXT DAY, I WENT TO RUN ERRANDS, ON A STATE HIGHWAY, THE DISTANCE TO EMPTY SAID 490 MILES TO EMPTY AND THE GAS GAUGE STILL SHOWED THE TANK WAS FULL. I PARKED THE CAR BECAUSE OF MY BUSY SCHEDULE AND USED MY SPARE VEHICLE. LAST WEEK, 8/27 I DROPPED MY CAR OFF FOR SERVICE AND PERFORM RECALL 18S32 (FUEL TANK DEFORMATION, PCM, CANISTER PURGE VALVE). THE DEALERSHIP CALLED AND SAID MY FUEL TANK WAS DEFORMED AND WOULD NEED REPLACED AT MY EXPENSE. FORD REJECTED THE DEALERSHIP CLAIM THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS NOT DEFORMED ENOUGH, YET IF I DO NOT REPLACE MY TANK, I WILL HAVE A FUEL SYSTEM THAT IS UNRELIABLE. I HAD NO WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS OR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES FOUND ON MY VEHICLE. IF I WERE TO RELY SOLELY ON MY GAUGE AND DISTANCE TO EMPTY, I WOULD HAVE RUN MY CAR OUT OF GAS AND PUT MYSELF AND FAMILY IN POTENTIAL DANGER. I HAVE PLACED MULTIPLE CALLS WITH FORD SERVICE AND DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THEM EXPLAIN WHAT FAILED IN THE FUEL SYSTEM THAT I CAUSED. THERE WAS NOTHING I DID WITH THE CAR THAT WOULD BE CONSIDERED NON TYPICAL USAGE. FINALLY, THE DEALERSHIP HAS PHOTOS THEY PLAN TO SHARE WITH ME. IN MAY OF 2019 THE VEHICLE DISPLAYED SIGNS THAT THE ISSUE WAS NOT RESOLVED. FOR EXAMPLE, USING EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF GASOLINE AND EMPTYING THE TANK WHILE THE GAUGE WAS SHOWING FUEL WAS PRESENT; ALSO, THE VEHICLE WOULD STOP MOVING WHILE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. AFTER BEING DIAGNOSED BY TWO DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS, THE MOST PRESENT DIAGNOSIS IS THAT RECALL 18S32 IS THE ISSUE AND NOW FORD IS REFUSING TO FIX THE VEHICLE. THE CAR HAD TO BE TOWED FIVE HOURS FROM THE LOCATION, DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS, TO A DEALERSHIP WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE RECALL HAD NOT BEEN RESOLVED ONLY TO BE INFORMED THAT FORD REFUSED TO COVER THE EXPENSE OF THE RECALL.

BROUGHT CAR BACK IN TO HAVE RESOLVED, THEY SPENT TWO WEEKS ADVOCATING TO FLORD FOR ME THAT THE ISSUE COULD BE RESOLVED BY REPLACING FUEL TANK AND PROBLEM WAS A DIRECT RELATION TO RECALL. FORD DENIED CLAIM AND FORD RESPONSE TO CUSTOMER WAS TO KEEP CAR HALF FULL WHICH WAS A QUOTE THEY MADE ABOUT THE ORIGINAL RECALL. FUEL TANK NEEDS REPLACEMENT AND FORD IS REFUSING TO FIX THE RECALL ON MY CAR AND DEALERSHIP IS NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR CLOSING THE TICKET AND ENSURING THE RECALL WAS FIXED. I OPENED A CLAIM WITH FORD YESTERDAY. I DON'T UNDERSTAND AS THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND ITS A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE IT GETS EVEN WORSE ESPECIALLY WHEN WE ARE DEALING WITH A SERIOUS FUEL ISSUE. FORD IS TELLING ME TO KEEP IT HALF FULL JUST LIKE THEY SAID WITH THE ORIGINAL RECALL AND I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY ARE NOT ADDRESSING THIS SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT IS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE RECALL. I AM ATTACHING THE PAPERWORK FROM THE DEALERSHIP. PLEASE HELP ME AS FORD DID THE SAME THING WITH THE TRANSMISSION RECALL. I BROUGHT IT IN AND THEY NEVER FIXED IT AND REFUSED TO ADDRESS IT AGAIN. I TOOK BACK TO FORD APRIL 11TH (SAME DEALER) GAVE MY CASE NUMBER SINCE I CALLED FORD PRIOR TO ASK IF THIS WOULD BE COVERED, THEY SAID THE DEALERSHIP WOULD NEED TO LOOK. FORD DEALER RECEIVED CAR 4/15 (SINCE I NEEDED AN APPOINTMENT) SAID THEY NEEDED APPROVAL FROM FORD AND WOULD CALL ME. I CALLED 4/18 TO FOLLOW UP, SERVICE MANAGER SAID THEY GOT DENIED ON ONE AND WILL CHECK WITH OTHER DEPARTMENTS AT FORD. I RECEIVED ANOTHER CALL SAME DAY THAT THEY CANNOT COVER IT SINCE IT WAS A ONE TIME RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE DESPITE NO PARTS BEING REPLACED AT PREVIOUS RECALL. I NOTICED THAT I HAD JUST REPAIRED MY CAR OVER A MONTH AGO FOR THE CANISTER PURGE VALVE. SO I WHEN TO THE FORD THAT I GOT MY CAR REPAIRED AT AND SHOWED THEM THE PAPER THAT I GOT IN THE MAIL. I ADVISED THEM THAT I ALREADY PAID FOR THE REPLACEMENT. THE SERVICE GUY TOLD ME THAT THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REIMBURSE MY MONEY BECAUSE I NEED AN ORIGINAL RECEIPT. I BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE IN 2016 WITH TAKING OFF FROM A STOPPED POSITION, ACCELERATING, SPUTTERING AND RANDOM STALLING WHILE DRIVING....WITHOUT WARNING. AFTER THE CAR ABRUPTLY STALLED ON A BUSY HIGHWAY WITH ME AND MY SON, I TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL DEALER FOR TESTING. HOWEVER, THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO FIND A PROBLEM THAT WOULD CAUSE THE STALLING. I CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE SPARINGLY AND CAUTIOUSLY IN 2017 AROUND MY COMMUNITY, EXPERIENCING RANDOM ISSUES WITH DROPPING DEAD AT A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. IN MAY 2018, INCREASINGLY MORE CONCERNED, I TOOK THE CAR TO A DIFFERENT DEALER, WHO WAS UNABLE TO FIND A PROBLEM EITHER. A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER, IN AUGUST 2018, THE CAR ABRUPTLY DROPPED DEAD AGAIN IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION COMING EVEN CLOSER TO CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. UNLIKE PREVIOUS INSTANCES, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALONG WITH AN ERROR MESSAGE APPEARED; NOT ALLOWING THE CAR TO STARTUP REQUIRING IT TO BE PUSHED OUT OF TRAFFIC UNTIL TOWED. THE PROBLEMS EXPERIENCED WITH THIS CAR HAS PUT ME AND MY CHILD IN MANY UNSAFE SITUATIONS CAUSING TREMENDOUS STRESS AND ANXIETY NOT KNOWING WHEN OR WHERE THE CAR WOULD ABRUPTLY STALL AGAIN. WE'VE TAKEN IT THE DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AND WAS NOT DIAGNOSED AND FIXED UNTIL THE LAST TRIP IN AUGUST 2018. THE DEALER INDICATED THE FUEL TANK HAD COLLAPSED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. MY HUSBAND SPOKE TO THE GENERAL MANAGER, FORD AND MANY OTHERS WHO REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE A WIDE SPREAD ISSUE WITH THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE. AFTER MULTIPLE CALLS AND COMPLAINTS TO FORD WE WERE LEFT WITH NO CHOICE, BUT TO PAY THE $1,300 REPAIR COST SINCE WE NEEDED THE VEHICLE THAT SAT AT THE DEALER FROM AUGUST 22, 2018 THROUGH OCTOBER 16, 2018. AFTER I WAS DONE I GOT BACK INTO MY CAR AND PUSHED THE PUSH START BUTTON. THE CAR STRUGGLED TO TURN ON AND STAY ON AND EVENTUALLY STAYED ON WITHOUT ANY ISSUES SO THIS LASTED MAYBE 5-10 SECONDS. EACH TIME I STARTED UP THE CAR I HAD ZERO ISSUES WITH GETTING CAR TURNED ON. THIS ISSUE ONLY OCCURS WHEN I HAVE JUST PUT GAS INTO THE GAS TANK AND I'M STARTING UP THE CAR. FILLER NECK HAS BEEN REPLACED, FUEL SENSOR AND HAVE EVEN HAD A EVAP TEST DONE FOR LEAKS AND THE ISSUE IS STILL AROUND. I'VE HAD A DIAGNOSTIC DONE AND THE CODE CAME BACK AS THE CAR IS RELEASING TOO MUCH FUEL. I DON'T REMEMBER THE CODE OR THE EXACT WORDING BUT THAT WAS WHAT THE CODE WAS SAYING.

UNABLE TO REMOVE OLD ONE AT THIS POINT. CLEARED CODE. CK ENG LIGHT CAME BACK ON BUT CAR SEEMS TO BEHAVE LIKE NORMAL. WILL HAVE TO PULL CODE AGAIN. WILL BE EXTREMELY UNHAPPY IF FUEL TANK HAS COLLAPSED. THE GAUGE STARTED READING FAULTY BUT BASED ON REFUEL DATES AND MILES DRIVEN THE TANK SEEMS TO TAKE THE APPROPRIATE AMOUNT OF FUEL. RAN OUT OF GAS WITH INFO CENTER STATING 10 MILES LEFT. EACH TIME THE CAR STALLS IT HAS NO ISSUE RESTARTING. IT ONLY HAS TROUBLE RIGHT AFTER FILLING UP. IT CRANKS FOR A WHILE. THEN IT TURNS OVER AND DOES FINE. CAR WOULD ALSO IDLE AT WRONG LEVELS. ALWAYS USED TO IDLE AT ABOUT 750RPM, WHICH IT DOES AGAIN NOW THAT EVAP PURGE VALVE HAS BEEN REPLACED. BEFORE THE EVAP PURGE VALVE REPLACEMENT THE CAR WOULD FEEL LIKE IT'S ENGINE BRAKING WHEN COASTING INSTEAD OF JUST ROLLING LIKE A NORMAL AUTOMATIC. THE CAR HASN'T BEEN DIAGNOSED BY A DEALERSHIP YET. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH LOCAL DEALERSHIPS HERE.

THEN ANOTHER DEALERSHIP ADVISED THEY HAD ANOTHER FOCUS WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND HAD TO REPLACE FUEL TANK, PURGE VALVE AND FUEL PUMP BECAUSE THE FUEL TANK HAD COLLAPSED INWARD. THEY CHECKED THE FUEL TANK ON MY FOCUS AND IT HAD ALSO COLLAPSED INWARD. HAD FUEL TANK, PURGE VALVE AND FUEL PUMP REPLACED AND NOW IT RUNS LIKE IT SHOULD AND GAUGES WORK. WAS ADVISED THAT THIS ISSUE CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO INTO LIMP MODE WHICH CAUSES CAR TO STALL. THIS REPAIR COST ME $1586.02! THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE AND A HAZARD TO THE OCCUPANTS. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR ABOUT THE LAST 4 YEARS AND IT TOOK THIS LONG TO DISCOVER WHAT WAS CAUSING IT. I'VE HAD THE VEHICLE FOR 5 YEARS NOW.

FOLLOWING THE ILLUMINATION OF THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THE VEHICLE WOULD EXHIBIT ROUGH IDLE AND STALLING. THE VEHICLE HAS LOGGED APPROXIMATELY 88,000 MILES. AN ASE CERTIFIED AUTOMOTIVE SHOP HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM WHICH IS CONSISTENT WITH A TECHNICAL BULLETIN ON THE ISSUE WHEREIN THE FUEL SYSTEM DOES NOT PROPERLY EQUALIZE PRESSURE. THIS RESULTS IN A VACUUM THAT STARVES THE ENGINE OF FUEL AND CAUSES THE PLASTIC FUEL TANK TO COLLAPSE. THE VEHICLE STALLS WHILE APPROACHING OR STOPPED AT BUSY INTERSECTIONS. THIS POSES A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. ADDITIONALLY, THE STRESS ON THE FUEL TANK MAY COMPROMISE ITS STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY. THIS SAFETY CONCERN SHOULD BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF FORD AND A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED.

"PURGE VALVE"-MY VEHICLE WAS TAKEN INTO RED MCCOMBS FORD DUE TO A P0420 CODE WHICH IS A PROBLEM WITH THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. BEFORE THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, I HAD NOT HAD ANY PERFORMANCE ISSUES OR NOTICED ANY PROBLEMS WHILE DRIVING OR IDLING ON ANY TYPE OF ROAD. THE CAR HAS 79,479 MILES AND THE CONVERTER WOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE FACTORY WARRANTY. I WAS TOLD THAT THE CONVERTER WENT OUT BECAUSE THE PURGE VALVE GOT STUCK OPEN WHICH CAUSED SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE FUEL TANK AND FUEL PUMP AND THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE THE CONVERTER UNTIL I PAID $1,900 TO GET THE OTHER PROBLEMS FIXED. I DID NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO GET THE OTHER PROBLEMS FIXED BEFORE THE FACTORY WARRANTY EXPIRED, THEREFORE I WILL NEED TO PAY AN ADDITIONAL $1,700 TO HAVE THE CONVERTER REPLACED ONCE THE WARRANTY EXPIRES. THIS IS A SYSTEMIC ISSUE AND THE PART WAS ALREADY RECALLED ON THE FUSION BUT NOT THE FOCUS, THEREFORE, FORD REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PART ON THE FOCUS. THE DEALERSHIP SAID WE COULD FIX THE PURGE VALVE ONLY BUT THE GAS GAUGE WOULD NOT READ CORRECTLY. WHAT KIND OF ADVICE IS THAT? FALSE FUEL LEVEL INDICATION MAY CAUSE DRIVERS TO RUN OUT OF FUEL AND BECOME STRANDED. DEALER ADVISES FUEL TANK HAS COLLAPSED AND REQUIRES FUEL PUMP, FUEL TANK, CANISTER AND SOLENOID REPLACEMENT IMMEDIATELY DUE TO RISK OF CAR STALLING OUT AND/OR RUNNING OUT OF GAS UNEXPECTEDLY. WHEN FUEL TANK IS FULL JUST AFTER FILLING UP, CAR REQUIRES MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS TO START. MILEAGE AT FAILURE: 83000. THIS APPEARS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR 2012 FORD FOCUS. FORD RECOGNIZES THE FAILURE OF THE PLASTIC GAS TANK SUCH THAT THE REPLACEMENT GAS TANK IS A DIFFERENT GAS TANK WHICH IS NOT PLASTIC, THEREFORE PASSING ON THE VERY EXPENSIVE COST ($2,000) OF THE DESIGN MISTAKE TO THE CUSTOMER. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY MY FOCUS BEGAN STALLING OUT VERY ABRUPTLY. I WAS AS IF I WAS SLAMMING ON MY BRAKES WHILE CRUISING ON THE HIGHWAY WITH NO NOTIFICATION THAT IT WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN. THIS HAPPENED MANY TIMES AND THE CAR WOULD SOMETIMES STALL COMPLETELY OR JUST KEEP MOVING. WHILE IDLING AT A STOP THE RPMS WOULD FLUCTUATE RAPIDLY THEN THE CAR WOULD STALL OUT. I BOUGHT THIS CAR AT 57K MILES AND AT 65K IT WAS DIAGNOSED AS THE FUEL PUMP WHICH WAS REPLACED. NOW AT 77K MILES I AM EXPERIENCING THE SAME SYMPTOMS AND THEY ARE VERY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY ON THE HIGHWAY. THE MANUFACTURERS PUMP IS CLEARLY FAULTY AND IT'S COSTING ME ANOTHER $600 TO REPLACE FOR THE SECOND TIME. I HAVE SEEN MANY OTHERS WITH THIS SAME ISSUE AND I'M HOPING TO SEE A RECALL ON SOMETHING THIS DANGEROUS.

I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO TROPICAL FORD IN ORLANDO FL FOR A RECALL REGARDING THE TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH, WHICH JOB HAD TO BE DONE 3 DIFFERENT TIMES WITHIN 90 DAYS. THE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE AND THAT HE COULD SHOW ME ALL THE GAS TANKS THEY HAD REPLACED BECAUSE THEY HAD A PILE OF THEM IN THE BACK. I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO THE DESIGN OF THE SYSTEM AND THAT FORD WAS AWARE OF THE ISSUE BUT THEY WERE NOT DOING ANYTHING TO ASSIST OR TAKE CARE OF THIS SERIOUS ISSUE WHICH CAUSES YOUR CAR TO STALL AND ENGINE TO TURN OFF WHILE DRIVING IN THE HIGHWAY OR CITY. I CALLED FORD WARRANTY DEPARTMENT AND FILED SEVERAL COMPLAINTS AND EACH TIME I WAS TOLD THAT THIS ISSUE WAS NOT COVER BY THE WARRANTY AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY WERE WILLING TO DO REGARDING THIS MATTER. VEHICLE LOST POWER AND WAS NOT ABLE TO SAFELY ACCELERATE WHILE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY. THE PROBLEM HAPPENED WHEN I DOWN SHIFTED A GEAR TO PASS SOMEONE (MANUAL TRANSMISSION). THE VEHICLE FELT LIKE IT HAD ABOUT 30% POWER. I WAS FORCED TO PULL OFF OF HIGHWAY. ONCE VEHICLE WAS SHUTOFF AND TURNED BACK ON IT RETURNED TO NORMAL. I HAD NO WARNING LIGHTS ON DASH OR ANYTHING. IT JUST HAPPENED ALL OF THE SUDDEN AND WAS VERY SCARY. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 FORD FOCUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE NOTICED GASOLINE LEAKING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR, THE FUEL LINE BECAME DETACHED THREE TIMES AND WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WAS 28,500.

THE PROBLEM STARTED ABOUT 2 MONTHS AFTER THE PURCHASE OF MY CAR. WITH THE LOW FUEL LIGHT ON I FILLED MY GAS TANK UNTIL THE HANDLE/NOZZLE OF THE GAS PUMP CLICKED OFF INDICATING THE TANK WAS FULL. WHEN I REMOVED THE NOZZLE FROM THE FILL TUBE YOU CAN HEAR A RUSH OF GAS COME UP AND THEN A SPLASH AS THE GAS HITS THE GROUND. IT EJECTS THE GAS UNDERNEATH THE CAR ALONGSIDE THE RIGHT REAR TIRE LEAVING AN 8" WET SPOT. MY CONCERN IS YOU HAVE HOT BRAKES AND A HOT MUFFLER RIGHT THERE NEXT TO WHERE THE FUEL IS DUMPING ON THE GROUND. IN MY HONEST OPINION THIS IS A MAJOR FIRE HAZARD. I NOW WILL NOT FILL UP MY TANK WITH ANYONE IN THE CAR. I HAVE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERS ATTENTION ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND THEY SAY THEY HAVE FOUND NOTHING WRONG. IT HAS HAPPENED TO ME THREE TIMES. TWO TIMES BEFORE THE DEALER INVESTIGATED IT AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG AND ONE TIME AFTER. I SPOKE WITH THE DEALERS FINANCE MANAGER WHO OWNS/LEASES A FORD FUSION AND HE STATED IT HAD HAPPENED TO HIM ON HIS CAR AS WELL. FORD HAS A NEW FUEL FILLER SYSTEM THAT DOES NOT USE A CAP ANYMORE. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THIS SYSTEM MAY BE FAULTY BY DESIGN. *TR

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DOES NOT SHIFT SMOOTHLY. INTERMITTENT VIBRATES, BUCKS, HESITATES, SLIPS & JERKS. CAN'T RELY ON TAKE-OFF ACCELERATION WHETHER IT WILL ENGAGE PROPERLY, PULLING INTO TRAFFIC IS VERY DANGEROUS. STOP AND GO TRAFFIC IS VERY DANGEROUS. IT'S LIKE SOMEONE DRIVING A STICK SHIFT AND NOT HAVING THE CLUTCH & GAS IN SYNC, ONLY IT'S AN AUTOMATIC SO YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I HAVE HAD THE CAR IN TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT ON 3 OCCASIONS. THE FIRST TIME THE TECH LAUGHED AT ME AND TOLD ME IT WAS JUST THE "NEW" 6-SPEED TRANSMISSION. 2ND TIME, THEY REPLACED SOME PARTS IN THE TRANSMISSION. 3RD TIME, THEY HAD THE CAR 4 DAYS & SAID THERE WAS NOTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY HAPPENING. THERE IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS TRANSMISSION, AND FORD NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING TO FIX THEM BEFORE AN ACCIDENT HAPPENS.

THE FUEL GAUGE READS MUCH HIGHER LEVELS THAN ARE ACTUALLY IN THE TANK. THE GAUGE WILL ACTUALLY GO UP FROM THREE QUARTERS TO FULL IN A 20 MILE RIDE. I DO HAVE PICTURES DOCUMENTING THIS. THE ONLY TIME THE GAUGE SEEMS TO BE CORRECT IS UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE FIRST THING IN THE MORNING. *TR
