Open Safety Recalls (7)
NHTSA Campaign: 18V735000
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012-2018 Ford Focus vehicles with a 2.0L GDI or 2.0L GTDI engine. The Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in fuel vapor management system.
Risk: The excessive vaccuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Powertrain Control Module. Dealers will also check for fault codes and replace the CPV as needed. If the CPV is replaced, dealers will inspect and replace the carbon canister, fuel tank and fuel delivery module as necessary. The recall began August 19, 2019. Owners may contact Ford Customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S32. Note: Until the vehicle is serviced for this concern, owners are advised to keep the fuel tank at least halfway full.
NHTSA Campaign: 19V515000
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2012 and 2017 Focus vehicles equipped with 2.0L GDI gasoline engines and 2013-2014 Focus ST vehicles equipped with 2.0L GTDI engines, previously recalled under 18V-735. The affected vehicles did not have the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) updated as intended. Therefore, the Canister Purge Valve (CPV) may malfunction, possibly causing excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor management system.
Risk: The excessive vacuum may result in an engine stall while driving, without warning and without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
The recall began July 29, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S22.
NHTSA Campaign: 16V643000
Component: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2012-2015 Ford Focus, 2013-2015 Ford Escape and Ford C-MAX, 2015 Lincoln MKC and Ford Mustang, and 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect vehicles. A component within the door latches may break, preventing the doors from latching and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.
Risk: A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the door latches with an improved part, free of charge. The recall began on January 27, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 16S30.
NHTSA Campaign: 12E035000
Component: EQUIPMENT
This recall involves aftermarket parts sold by Yakima Products, Inc. for use on model year 2012 and 2013 Ford Focus vehicles. This recall is being conducted by Yakima, not by Ford. Certain combined Q-Tower and Q128 Clip rooftop rack systems, part numbers 8000124 and 8000728, do not fully contact the door frame.
Risk: Without proper contact of the rooftop rack clip to the door frame, there is insufficient clamping pressure and friction. The system may slide off the vehicle when loaded with accessories, possibly becoming a road hazard to other vehicles or causing injury to pedestrians.
Fix: Yakima will notify owners, and Yakima or a Yakima dealer will refund the purchase of the Q-Tower and Q-128 Clip system. There is no replacement system available for the 2012-2013 model year Ford Focus. The safety recall began on October 15, 2012. Only vehicles equipped with the vehicle rack system are affected. This recall is being conducted by Yakima, not Ford. Owners may contact Yakima at 1-888-925-4621.
NHTSA Campaign: 12V149000
Component: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:SWITCH/WIRING
FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 FOCUS VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM AUGUST 1, 2010, THROUGH OCTOBER 18, 2011. A SEAL IN THE WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR TO THE PASSENGER SIDE WIPER MOTOR MAY BE MISSING.
Risk: WATER OR OTHER CONTAMINANTS MAY ACCUMULATE IN THE CONNECTOR, RESULTING IN AN INTERMITTENT OR INOPERATIVE PASSENGER SIDE WIPER MOTOR, REDUCING VISIBILITY AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Fix: FORD WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND AS NECESSARY, CLEAN AND PROPERLY SEAL THE PASSENGER SIDE WIPER MOTOR CONNECTOR. ANY INOPERATIVE WIPER MOTORS WILL BE REPLACED. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 21, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP CENTER AT 1-866-436-7332.
NHTSA Campaign: 13V335000
Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
Ford is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Focus BEV vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights, manufactured September 15, 2011, through May 6, 2013; and model year 2013 Focus ST vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights, manufactured February 16, 2012, through May 7, 2013. Due to a wiring incompatability, the front side marker lamps may not function. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
Risk: Without the proper illumination of the side maker lamps, the vehicle may be less visible in night time conditions, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will modify the headlamp assembly wiring, free of charge. The recall began on August 16, 2013. Owners may contact the Ford customer relationship center at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's recall number is 13C04.
NHTSA Campaign: 20V331000
Component: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2011-2014 Fiesta, 2013-2014 Fusion, 2015 Mustang, 2013-2015 Escape and C-Max, 2012-2015 Focus, 2014-2016 Transit Connect, 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ, and 2015 MKC vehicles. These vehicles were previously recalled and repaired under recalls 15V-246, 16V-643 or 17V-210, however the repair may not have been completed properly. A component within the door latches may break making the doors difficult to latch and/or leading the driver or a passenger to believe a door is securely closed when, in fact, it is not.
Risk: A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the latch date codes to confirm if the repair was done correctly, and replace the side door latches if necessary, free of charge. Owners will also have the option to inspect their own vehicle's door latches and enter the date codes into a website to determine if the latches are correct. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 27, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S30.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 3777)
Power Train →8 issues
Your 2012 Ford Focus has a known transmission control module (TCM) problem that causes shuddering, rough gear changes, and improper downshifts. You tried to get it repaired under Ford's warranty program before it expired in June 2025, but the dealership refused service. In December 2025, your transmission completely failed on the highway, causing your car to stall and requiring a tow—the dealership estimates the repair at $1,800. Ford has acknowledged this is a widespread defect in 2012–2016 Focus models but denied your warranty claim because you missed the deadline, even though you attempted service before it expired.

Your car suddenly lost the ability to move forward or backward while stopped at a stop sign, with the check engine light coming on after a restart. Over the following days, you experienced multiple episodes of unexpected acceleration and severe slowdown while driving, creating dangerous situations where other vehicles could have hit you. The transmission appears to have multiple failures including the dual input clutch assembly, actuators, and transmission control module (TCM). A transmission specialist or Ford dealership will need to diagnose and likely replace the faulty transmission components.

Your transmission failed about 3 months after you bought this car, making it unsafe to drive. After a lengthy repair at the Mazda dealership, you got a replacement transmission, but the same problem is happening again after just 2 years and under 40,000 miles. The repair likely involved replacing the transmission assembly or internal transmission components.

Your transmission intermittently refuses to shift beyond 3rd gear while driving, leaving you unable to accelerate or maintain highway speeds — a dangerous situation that forced your son to pull over. A Ford dealership diagnosed this as a failure in the clutch actuator assembly (error code P2832), which is a known defect in your 2012 Ford Focus's DPS6 dual-clutch transmission. This is a repeat failure even though your vehicle was previously repaired under warranty for the same issue. The fix will likely require replacement or overhaul of the transmission's clutch actuator assembly and internal components.

Your transmission is stalling and not shifting smoothly — the engine revs high before shifting hard into the next gear. A TCM (transmission control module) error code appeared on your dashboard. Your dealer says the TCM has failed and needs replacement at a cost of $2,116, which Ford won't cover under warranty even though your car only has 69,000 miles.

Your 2012 Ford Focus experiences shuddering and temporary power loss when shifting between first and second gear. Multiple mechanics have identified the transmission clutch as slipping, and the dealer determined your transmission needs replacement. Your vehicle may also fail to shift into reverse or accelerate beyond first gear (10 mph), and your check engine light is on. The repair likely involves replacing the transmission or having it professionally serviced to address the clutch slipping issue.

While driving, your transmission started slipping and the vehicle stalled, with the check engine light turning on. A mechanic determined that the Transmission Control Module (TCM) had failed and needed to be replaced. This happened at around 100,000 miles, and while Ford has an extended warranty program for this issue, your vehicle wasn't covered under it. Replacing the TCM will require having the module removed and a new one installed by a mechanic.

While driving at 35 MPH, your car suddenly jerked and the transmission downshifted unexpectedly. A "Transmission Overheating" warning appeared on the dashboard along with the check engine light. After letting the transmission cool and restarting the vehicle, you took it to the dealer where they found the transmission had failed and needed complete replacement. This occurred at approximately 195,000 miles.

Your steering system is displaying warning messages and the steering wheel is locking up, making it impossible to turn. This started happening after you recently had lower ball joints replaced, even though the steering was working fine before. The problem requires immediate diagnosis to determine if it's related to the recent repair work or another steering component failure.

Your power steering suddenly stopped working while driving, forcing you to manually steer the car with excessive effort. This happened without warning during a routine turn and created a dangerous situation where you nearly collided with oncoming traffic. The power steering motor appears to have failed electrically and remains inoperable. Repairs will likely involve replacing the power steering motor or the entire electric power steering assembly.

Fuel/propulsion System →2 issues
About a year after getting a software update (program #24N07) installed in December 2024, your 2012 Ford Focus started stalling when you slowed down to a stop or right after refueling. You had to replace the purge valve yourself again, even though the dealership had already repaired this component previously.

Your car has trouble starting after you refuel. When you try to start it, you hear a terrible noise, and the engine cranks slowly before finally starting. The fuel pressure buildup in the tank appears to be causing the engine to stall out shortly after starting.

Power Train,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
After filling your gas tank, your car started shuddering while parked and became difficult to restart. While driving home, the acceleration fluctuated erratically and eventually dropped to zero, causing the engine to shut down at a red light. Your check engine light, battery light, and oil light illuminated, and you had to press the gas pedal to restart the vehicle. You've noticed your car exhibits the same symptoms as a known recall (19S22) that Ford says your vehicle wasn't part of, though a one-time replacement part (CPV) is available but may not address the full scope of the issue.

Power Train,electrical System →1 issue
Your transmission warning light is on, and a repair shop says your transmission control module (TCM) and gears need repair. You've noticed jerking, delayed acceleration, and loss of power when driving, which can be dangerous when merging or crossing intersections. The 2012 Focus uses a PowerShift dual-clutch transmission that has been linked to widespread failures and is subject to ongoing lawsuits and extended warranties. Fixing this will likely require replacing the transmission control module and potentially rebuilding or replacing the transmission itself.

Steering,vehicle Speed Control,engine →1 issue
Your car feels underpowered when you shift into Drive and accelerates sluggishly. Your transmission makes a rough noise when starting. You took it to a Ford dealer for a recall that was supposed to fix this issue, but the problem persists and you're unsure if any work was actually performed. The dealer may need to re-inspect the transmission and engine control systems to diagnose why the recall repair didn't resolve the issue.

Electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your car is shutting off while you're driving and has become difficult to start afterward. This could leave you stranded on the road or unable to restart your vehicle once it stalls. The problem likely involves the electrical system's ability to keep the engine running and may require diagnosis of the battery, alternator, or starter.

Engine And Engine Cooling →1 issue
Your engine shudders when idling and your check engine light is on. A mechanic suggested coolant may have leaked into your engine, which can cause rough running and potential engine damage if not addressed. The vehicle wasn't diagnosed or repaired at the time of the complaint. You'll likely need a mechanic to check your coolant system and engine for water contamination, and possibly replace damaged engine components.
