2015 Ford Explorer Steering Problems

I am filing an official safety complaint regarding my 2015 Ford Explorer Sport 3.5L due to a dangerous and sudden power-steering failure that occurred while I was driving with my children in the vehicle. There were no warning lights, alerts, or symptoms leading up to the failure. The power steering went out instantly and without any indication that something was wrong.

Lost control of steering. Was extremely hard to contor vehicle. Put me at great risk of accident.

My steering fault light started to regularly come on. I took my vehicle to Firestone and was told they could not repair it, due to there being a steering recall. I was advised I would have to take my vehicle to Ford.

I was driving my 2015 Ford Explorer SUV and the wheels locked into going straight and I was unable to turn. This happened with no warning at all. We had the car looked at by a mechanic and they stated it was the power steering, and that the electronic module went out and the whole steering rack and pinion would need to be replaced.

when you hit the gas the steering turns when you let go it straightens back out please look into this I might cause an accident or loose control of the car

I have a recall on rear suspension I have called to have the repairs done several times I was given response of they didn't have the parts needed and would take several weeks . Rear suspension is very unsafe and now the engine cooling component is causing issues with over heating and not giving any warning lights on dash and am afraid found cause fire or some unsafe issue

Last year I had to have the electric power steering pump replaced as it completely locked up almost causing an accident while trying to turn, this year now the steering shaft froze up while driving in traffic. Totaling $3,100.00 to fix when I was told this is something that should never need to be replaced and I drive my vehicle very carefully with my children in it .

Power Steering Assist Fault on 10/17/2022. Steering wheel would not move (or was very difficult to turn the wheels at all). Had this occurred while driving it would have been near impossible for my wife to steer the car and likely would have caused an accident.

Driving down the road and making a right turn into a gas station, I heard a popping noise coming from the front, passenger, tire area. I let it go for a couple days but the noise didn't go away. A day earlier, I picked up the vehicle from Ford (had the recalls addressed).

Vehicle lost power steering while driving on highway. My self along with 4 other passengers was in danger of running into other vehicles . I was able to get vehicle to repair and the dealership service department has t replace the Electronic Steering gear and program.

I purchased this vehicle in May 2021. Within a week after purchasing, the power steering went out completely. When this happened, an indicator came on the dash that said "Steering Assist Fault-Service required".

The Ford electronic rack and pinion system just failed. No warning light, no advance notification. Driving vehicle down road and ABS ability to steer vehicle becomes impossible.

The steering system failed twice without notice. The car would not steer while running, nearly causing an accident. The problem had been reproduced and confirmed by the dealer.

Electronic steering assist gear failed and complete loss of steering was experienced. Driver was traveling at 45 MPH at the time of failure which could have resulted in serious injury or death. Ford was contacted 72 hours ago and has failed to make contact.

When driving at low speeds, below 30 MPH, steering becomes difficult and when turning the steering wheel and releasing it coming out of a turn, the steering wheel gets stuck before it returns to the straight position. When driving at highway speeds, the steering wheel is very difficult to turn, almost as if the power steering has stopped working.

Ford explorer 2015 4WD (79,000 km), currently not covered by warranty or recall. On march 2020 while the vehicle was under warrantee with 70,000 km, I've explained to ford dealer that there is steering problem appeared suddenly when driving, they made computer and technical check but no code arise, therefore, they informed me that nothing found and it may not repeated again.

On 03/31/2021 I took my 2015 explorer in for an alignment after I replaced the two front struts due to a loud intermittent popping noise when steering the vehicle left and right at low speed. The popping noise has existed since I purchased the car a month ago. The car was aligned at bill brown ford, and I had them inspect the vehicle to find the sound.

My steering is very difficult. It does not turn at times. I never got a recall notice on this, although there was a recall ending on august 19.

Rear tow link snapped while wife was driving on interstate at 70 MPH, lost control, fishtailed across traffic lanes before regaining control and pulling over. Wife was scared to death. Had towed to ford service center.

The first incident was about 9months ago I was driving with my 3 year old on highway at about 65mph the car locked up steering the wheel. However I finally got an appointment at the ford dealership and they stated that the issue was caused by a failing electronic steering rack. This vehicle only have 42,524 miles on it and this should not be happening already.

Lane keeping steering assist is electric motor assist. The rack & pinion steering gear motor malfunctioned, leaving the steering without any assist, resulting in manual (extremely difficult to steer) steering. In this case, no crash resulted, but required rack & pinion required replacement.

On 4/14/19 we left for vacation and drove1,100 miles from arlington, va to key largo, fl and when we got to fl, the steering started making a clunking noise and got stuck when we were making a u-turn. After some research, I could tell it was the steering, could give out when driving and was a serious repair that could not wait until returning home in a week to get it repaired.

Thank god I was in the right lane and going straight because if I had been in the process of turning and there were other veh.

We were driving at about 45 miles an hour when advanc trac and power steering light came on. The steering got suddenly very hard to maneuver husband had both hand trying to keep it steady, he had to pull very hard to be able to pull in gas station to get out of traffic. Blinkers no longer worked, terrain knob turned off and didn't work.

Sport model front end has had a loud popping/ creak noise when going over bumps at a angle and also sharp low speed manuevers ( pulling into tight parking space) since it was basicly brand new. Loud ticking noise from front hubs at low speeds first visit to ford was at 9,000 miles they could not duplicate it.

My tie rod and rod and navigation system which are electric broke while I was driving my vehicle. There was no forwarning of the event. I was able to turn off the car and turn it back on again and the messages went away and my power steering worked again.

Upon the transition from smooth pavement to pavement which was being scraped for resurfacing, the "power steering assist failure" and "service advancetrac" messages were displayed and there was no power steering assistance and the directional signals only work by holding the stalk in the proper position manually.

Driving 55mph on I-94 last night in a steady rain and check battery message came up in the left ip display. Within a few seconds I lost the power steering, then the center console entertainment/info screen, then the instrument cluster went black with the headlights and windshield wipers which were on highest setting slowed but continued to operate only while in the highest setting.

Every time when I get out from the parking or trying to park the car,I turn the steering wheel left and right and I get this squeezing noise.

Have noticed the popping noise when turning the steering to the right. Noticed sometimes an oil leak by this side 1 year before. This leak was notified to the dealer in every scheduled maintainance appointment.

Traveling on highway at 60 MPH vehicle suddenly decelerated to 5 MPH within 3 seconds. Engine began running rough and stopped. Pulled to shoulder of road.

I was in downtown des moines and received a "service steering fault now" warning. I continued to drive to find a parking spot. While parallel parking, I recieved the warning again but this time the steering went out.

2015 explorer sport - have a binding, popping noise when turning the steering wheel to the right. Pops before completing a full turn at full stop and will pop multiple times when doing a k-turn or right turn at slow speed. Had thrust washer, nuts, and other items replaced nov 2017 at 34776 miles, now at 38000 and its back and of course techs can't duplicate.

With 51,000 miles and just over 3 years on the car, the steering gear box failed with popping noise occurring anytime the steering wheel was turned. Got worse quickly and had to get it fixed. Very expensive but also very scary for my safety.

Vehicle will Randomly flash service track soon and a steering assist fault while driving down the highway. This will cause the steering to completely lock up and you are unable to turn at highway speeds.

Steering rack failed while driving and locked the steering wheel. There was no early signs of failure nor any indications in the dashboard or any abnormal behavior prior to the failure of the steering rack. I was on a road with little traffic and was able to stop and turn the car off and back on while applying force to the steering wheel, whic eventually allowed me to turn the wheel.

Part became loose in the steering rack. The metal piece that came loose was lodging itself in-between the teeth on the rack and would prevent steering to move without additional force. It appears that a washer or metal round piece came loose and then randomly becomes lodged/stuck in the steering rack.

The Power Steering was not working and a Low Voltage Warning came on saying power consumption was being reduced. I took the car to a mechanic and he tested the battery and alternator output. They both checked good.

We have had power steering loss upon starting our 2015 Ford Explorer front wheel drive with park assist. This evening 2/13/2023 my wife called me to tell me the steering has stopped working again and she could not turn the wheels. I've been informed that my 2015 ford explorer sport with less than 60k miles needs a new steering rack. This is unacceptable for a higher end vehicle with lower miles. Very disappointed and I see that many people have been told the same thing.

Steering fails when moving and refuses to turn on any street. We have to stop, turn the ignition off and restart the vehicle to resume driving!

While driving in wet conditions with the automatic cruise control enabled the vehicle pulls to the sides. Fords response is that the brand new winter tires are causing the slipping.

While driving, ford explorer dash wrench light indicator turns on then suddenly you loose power and control and braking, technical disabled. You have to come to a rolling stop. Then turn on car again to remove wrench light.

Started hearing popping sound on passengers side when backing and turning and now it has advanced to steering feels like it catches or binds for a second while driving down road.

After sitting for 1 month, I went to start and battery was dead. Aaa got car running, and batter was recharged. Sort time after, power steering became inoperable and has been for 6 weeks.

While I was driving 70mph on a freeway, power steering stopped working. Showing the warning messages on the gauge cluster. "power steering loss" "advance trac control fault" I was able to pull over to a side of the freeway safely as there was no traffic.

50k only and the rack and pinion steering column is failing.

My wife was driving down the road when the power steering suddenly went out almost causing her to wreck. Shortly after a "steering assist fault service required" message popped up. After searching through forums and goggle it seems this is a common issue that ford refuses to recognize.

The power steering froze while driving on three separate occasions over the last two days. The first was while pulling into a parking space, the second time was while turning to merge onto a busy two lane highway and the third time was while driving 55 MPH merging onto the freeway. The car was in motion in all three cases and had to be put in park and turned off before steering came back.

The electric system went on the fritz when it was significantly hot outside. This caused the power steering to falter and the car to be essentially inoperable. This happened 4 times throughout the summer, and it seemed to happen on extremely hot days.

While I was driving my vehicle on icy road conditions, my vehicle's steering failed without notice. Thankfully I was driving slower due to road conditions. I was unable to steer my vehicle down the road.

Was driving and the steer well became lock couldn't turn the wheel, tried to pump the brakes and they didn't catch. End up driving right into a pole and the airbags didn't deploy with everyone hitting their heads and kids getting concussions.

I just filed a complaint on my vehicle steering problem and as I have been surfing the web I find that many other people have had the same problem. I am a retired utah highway patrolman with 36 years experience and I have never seen a more dangerous problem than this. I cannot believe tjhat something has not been done about this problem.

While driving "steering fault" displayed and power steering stops working making it nearly impossible to steer.

My wife was driving at 30mph when power steering failed took it to shop and they said it was electronic power steering module that failed. A 3 year old vehicle with 40000 miles on it .looks like alot more people have had same problem.

Steering failed at 65 MPH not allowing me turn the vehicle. Hurt wrist trying to avoid others cars.

I was driving on the highway at 60 MPH and the car beeped a warning stating steering malfunction and my wheel just locked. I was in my car with my wife and two kids. I immediately put on my blinkers and started honking, luckily everyone around me realized my car was in trouble and safely made it off the highway.

On 08-12-17 I pulled into my driveway an turn my steering wheel locked up and I could not turn it.. I shut down the car and restartd it .it had reset if this had happened on the highway someone could have been killed. I will take the car to ford on 8-14-17 to see if they will help and fix it.

Power steering failed at a high rate of speed.

I was driving steering wheel locked as I was making a right turn, locked it as I was half way on the turn. This happened on the 10th of march. Today 3/17/17 as I was reversing it locked again good thing I wasn't on freeway or in high traffic area.

While driving 30 MPH coming up on a left hand turn my power steering went out, the advance trac light came on and the stability light also came on making it really hard to make the turn. Luckily there was no cars turning on my right allowing me to use up both lanes.

On two separate occasions, one on surface street 35mph - 3/2/16 and one on freeway 65mph - 4/6/16 my power steering has stopped working completely.
