I am filing an official safety complaint regarding my 2015 Ford Explorer Sport 3.5L due to a dangerous and sudden power-steering failure that occurred while I was driving with my children in the vehicle. There were no warning lights, alerts, or symptoms leading up to the failure. The power steering went out instantly and without any indication that something was wrong.

My steering fault light started to regularly come on. I took my vehicle to Firestone and was told they could not repair it, due to there being a steering recall. I was advised I would have to take my vehicle to Ford.

I was driving my 2015 Ford Explorer SUV and the wheels locked into going straight and I was unable to turn. This happened with no warning at all. We had the car looked at by a mechanic and they stated it was the power steering, and that the electronic module went out and the whole steering rack and pinion would need to be replaced.

I have a recall on rear suspension I have called to have the repairs done several times I was given response of they didn't have the parts needed and would take several weeks . Rear suspension is very unsafe and now the engine cooling component is causing issues with over heating and not giving any warning lights on dash and am afraid found cause fire or some unsafe issue

Last year I had to have the electric power steering pump replaced as it completely locked up almost causing an accident while trying to turn, this year now the steering shaft froze up while driving in traffic. Totaling $3,100.00 to fix when I was told this is something that should never need to be replaced and I drive my vehicle very carefully with my children in it .

Power Steering Assist Fault on 10/17/2022. Steering wheel would not move (or was very difficult to turn the wheels at all). Had this occurred while driving it would have been near impossible for my wife to steer the car and likely would have caused an accident.

When driving at low speeds, below 30 MPH, steering becomes difficult and when turning the steering wheel and releasing it coming out of a turn, the steering wheel gets stuck before it returns to the straight position. When driving at highway speeds, the steering wheel is very difficult to turn, almost as if the power steering has stopped working.

Ford explorer 2015 4WD (79,000 km), currently not covered by warranty or recall. On march 2020 while the vehicle was under warrantee with 70,000 km, I've explained to ford dealer that there is steering problem appeared suddenly when driving, they made computer and technical check but no code arise, therefore, they informed me that nothing found and it may not repeated again.

On 03/31/2021 I took my 2015 explorer in for an alignment after I replaced the two front struts due to a loud intermittent popping noise when steering the vehicle left and right at low speed. The popping noise has existed since I purchased the car a month ago. The car was aligned at bill brown ford, and I had them inspect the vehicle to find the sound.

The first incident was about 9months ago I was driving with my 3 year old on highway at about 65mph the car locked up steering the wheel. The car was moving all directions on three lanes and it was very hard for me to atempt to steer as the wheel was very tight. It finally went down to 0 MPH and I pulled over thanking god I did not crash.

We were driving on the freeway from a mini vacation at 70 miles per hour when our 2015 ford explorer which only had 45,000 miles logged began to lose steering power. A little over a month ago the left rear toe link broke while driving. This caused the car to lose control and go into a sideways slide, breaking the wheel hub in the process. Smooth road going about 50 MPH in good conditions.

As we were turning into a parking space there was a popping sound so I immediately took the car to the dealer. We were told that the rack and pinion was defective which is the second time this has happened in a ford around the 40,000 mile mark. If the rack had failed at high speed it could well have been fatal.

I thought the vehicle was having struts issues in the front as well as a sway bar. However I finally got an appointment at the ford dealership and they stated that the issue was caused by a failing electronic steering rack. This vehicle only have 42,524 miles on it and this should not be happening already.

Lane keeping steering assist is electric motor assist. The rack & pinion steering gear motor malfunctioned, leaving the steering without any assist, resulting in manual (extremely difficult to steer) steering. In this case, no crash resulted, but required rack & pinion required replacement.

On 4/14/19 we left for vacation and drove1,100 miles from arlington, va to key largo, fl and when we got to fl, the steering started making a clunking noise and got stuck when we were making a u-turn. This car was bought new with less than a 100 miles on it, at about 7000 miles while entering I 495 from a ramp I stepped on the gas and the steering locked up I quickly took my foot off the gas and the steering unlocked,I visited the dealer and complained the car was checked no problem was found ,at 32000miles I started hearing noises from the front of the car sometimes while backing up this was intermittent and I was never able to duplicate the noise at the dealer until I had a complete failure at 42700+ miles the noise was occurring constantly,the dealer' s diagnosis was failure of the steering box,I am not an expert but this is a dangerous problem the failure occurred while I was driving at 20 miles per hour on city streets,if I had been on the freeway at 70 miles an hour it could have created an accident with injuries and who knows what else talking to the manufacturer is useless my complaint was and is been ignored I think this car has a defect in the steering system that is worth your investigating for the cause before someone is seriously hurt in an accident.as I write this the defective part is being replaced at a ford dealer.

Sport model front end has had a loud popping/ creak noise when going over bumps at a angle and also sharp low speed manuevers ( pulling into tight parking space) since it was basicly brand new. After the repair, the steering problem returned. You discovered there may be a recall related to this issue, but your VIN wasn't included in it. The steering problem may require replacement of the ball joints, control arm, and related suspension components.

on 8/1/25 service steering assist light came on, vehicle was driven to the auto repair shop with no hard codes to diagnose. Vehicle was driven towards home on 8/6/25 and lost all steering within a matter of seconds while on the highway at 60 MPH. Steering assist light came on and stabilitrac light flashed.

2015 explorer sport - have a binding, popping noise when turning the steering wheel to the right. Part became loose in the steering rack. The metal piece that came loose was lodging itself in-between the teeth on the rack and would prevent steering to move without additional force.
