Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:FLOOR SHIFT
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2001-2008 Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner vehicles manufactured March 31, 2001, to September 1, 2009. The affected vehicles are equipped with either a 2.3L or 3.0L engine and have had their CD4E transmission replaced with remanufactured one that was rebuilt between June 11, 2015 through July 15, 2015. These service repair part transmissions have a shift lever bolt that may not be properly tightened. As a result, the shift control lever could disengage from the transmission without warning.
Risk: If the shift lever disengages from the transmission, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the gear selection indicator may show that the transmission is in the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not actually be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the transmissions and either tighten the manual shift lever bolt or replace the manual shift lever assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 23, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 15S28.
NHTSA Campaign: 14V526000
Component: HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2005-2008 Ford Escape hybrid electric vehicles manufactured October 13, 2003, to June 20, 2008, and 2006-2008 Mercury Mariner hybrid electric vehicles manufactured June 10, 2005, to June 20, 2008. The coolant pump for the hybrid system may fail resulting in the hybrid electronics overheating.
Risk: If the hybrid electronics system overheats, it may shut down the powertrain, resulting in a stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the original Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) Pump with an improved brushless pump, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on October 27, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 14S19.
NHTSA Campaign: 15E045000
Component: SUSPENSION:FRONT:WHEEL BEARING
The Timken Company (Timken) is recalling certain aftermarket front wheel bearings, part number 510072, sold from January 22, 2015, to May 21, 2015, to be used as service parts on 2001-2012 Ford Escape, 2001-2011 Mazda Tribute, and 2005-2011 Mercury Mariner vehicles. The affected wheel bearings have incorrect dimensions of a 42mm bore, 76mm outer dimension, and 39mm width, instead of a 42mm bore, 78mm outer dimension and a 45mm width.
Risk: Use of an incorrectly sized wheel bearing can adversely affect the braking and steering of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Timken has begun notifying distributors who will offer purchasers replacement wheel bearings, free of charge. The recall began on May 21, 2015. Owners may contact Timken customer service at 1-866-984-6536.

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 1584)
Unknown Or Other →4 issues
You purchased a 2005 Ford Escape, but discovered that the VIN numbers don't match across the vehicle—the dashboard VIN matches your title, but the engine control unit (ECU) and door jamb show a 2006 Ford Escape with a 2.3L 4-cylinder engine, while your vehicle should have a 3.0L 6-cylinder. Additionally, your odometer reading appears inconsistent with documented maintenance history from 2018. The dealership has refused to address these concerns. This situation suggests the vehicle may have been assembled with mismatched components or may have a history that wasn't properly disclosed.

Your car's front subframe has rusted severely, which caused you to lose steering control and the vehicle to skid to a stop. The front wheel nearly separated from the car. This is the same defect that Ford recalled in 2001-2004 Escape models. Repair will require replacement or reinforcement of the front subframe assembly.

Your car is stalling and shutting down without warning while you're driving, with no prior symptoms. It happened twice in one week—once while a friend was driving and again at night when you lost power steering and lights, nearly causing an accident. After waiting 10 minutes, the car restarts and runs normally, but you have no idea what's causing it. The underlying issue could be related to fuel delivery, electrical power, or engine management, and needs professional diagnostic testing to identify the root cause.

Your check engine light came on, and then your vehicle stopped responding normally to the gas pedal—it wouldn't accelerate even when you pressed down. While driving on the highway, the transmission downshifted on its own and your car could only reach about 30 mph, with noticeable shaking. A mechanic diagnosed a faulty torque converter in the transmission that needs replacement.

Electrical System →2 issues
You discovered that your 2005 Ford Escape has mismatched mileage and VIN information. When you took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, they found that a different VIN (from a 2006 Ford Escape) was showing in the diagnostic system with different mileage readings than what appears on your title and odometer. Records show the dealer who sold you the car purchased it in 2018 with significantly higher mileage than what you were told at purchase. This suggests the odometer or vehicle records may have been altered, which constitutes odometer fraud. Resolving this will likely require working with law enforcement, your state's motor vehicle department, and potentially the dealer through legal action.

Structure →2 issues
Your 2005 Ford Escape has damage to the rear subframe that an independent mechanic says needs to be replaced. You found that Ford issued a recall (14V165000) for this same issue, but your vehicle's VIN wasn't included in that recall. The damage was discovered around 100,000 miles. Repair will likely involve removing and replacing the rear subframe assembly.

Your rear driver's side door won't latch shut, even though you can manually move the latch mechanism. The door started having this problem suddenly with no prior warning, and now you're using bungee cords to keep it closed. Because the door won't stay latched, your door ajar warning light stays on and your interior lights won't turn off automatically while driving. The fix will likely involve replacing or adjusting the door latch mechanism to restore proper engagement.

Service Brakes →1 issue
Your brake pedal went completely to the floor with little resistance while backing out of a parking space, leaving you unable to stop the car. The ABS and brake warning lights came on, and you heard a loud warning noise, but had to coast slowly and use the emergency brake to get home safely. The problem disappeared the next day, but this is a serious safety concern that needs immediate professional diagnosis.

Suspension,structure →1 issue
Your rear passenger side has rusted through completely, causing the strut mount to detach from the vehicle body. This structural failure caused your vehicle to swerve unexpectedly during wet and snowy conditions, nearly hitting another vehicle and spinning in complete circles. The repair will likely require welding the rusted area, replacing the strut mount assembly, and potentially reinforcing the affected body section.

Power Train,electrical System,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your vehicle suddenly stalled while making a u-turn and won't restart, even though it cranks. After checking fuel delivery and sensor components, you found the engine has no spark, which suggests faulty ignition coils, spark plugs, or the engine control computer (PCM). This type of sudden stall during driving could be dangerous, especially at higher speeds. The repair will likely involve replacing the ignition coils, spark plugs, and possibly the PCM to restore spark and engine operation.

Suspension →1 issue
Your right lower control arm separated from the subframe because the subframe had rusted through. This happened during a panic stop at low speed and caused you to lose control of the car, making it impossible to drive. The impact also damaged your CV axle joint and front fender when the wheel moved into it. Fixing this will require replacing the rusted subframe, the lower control arm, CV axle, and repairing or replacing the front fender.

Electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your engine suddenly shut off while driving at 30 mph with no warning light appearing on the dashboard. Your son was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts and drive it home. The vehicle hasn't been diagnosed or repaired, so the underlying cause remains unknown. A mechanic will need to run diagnostic tests to identify whether the issue is electrical, fuel-related, or engine-based.
