HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 532,633 MY 2006-2007 ACCENT, ENTOURAGE, SONATA, MY 2007 AZERA, ELANTRA AND SANTA FE, MY 2005-2007 TUCSON AND MY 2007-2008 VERACRUZ VEHICLES. THE STOP LAMP SWITCH IN THE AFFECTED VEHICLES MAY MALFUNCTION. A MALFUNCTIONING STOP LAMP SWITCH MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO NOT ILLUMINATE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED OR MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO REMAIN ILLUMINATED WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS RELEASED. A STOP LAMP SWITCH MALFUNCTION MAY ALSO AFFECT THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKE-TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK FEATURE SO THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE SHIFTED OUT OF THE PARK POSITION. IT MAY ALSO CAUSE THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) MALFUNCTION LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE, AND IT MAY NOT DEACTIVATE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED.
Risk: ANY OF THESE MALFUNCTIONS, ALONE OR IN COMBINATION, MAY LEAD TO A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STOP LAMP SWITCH FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 29, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.
NHTSA Campaign: 05V177000
Component: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL:AUTOMATIC (ASC)
ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM (ESP), THE YAW RATE SENSOR MAY BECOME TOO SENSITIVE AND MAY RECALIBRATE INACCURATELY. WHILE DRIVING THE ESP PROGRAM MAY CAUSE THE ENGINE TO REDUCE POWER AND MAY CAUSE A BRAKE AT ONE OF THE WHEELS TO BE INAPPROPRIATELY.
Risk: BRAKE APPLICATION CAUSED BY INADVERTENT ESP ACTIVATION MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL AND A CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ESP HYDRAULIC ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI DE PUERTO RICO AT 1-800-981-0188.

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 185)
Suspension →3 issues
Your rear subframe has developed corrosion that a dealer says has an 80% chance of fracturing, which would make your vehicle undrivable. The manufacturer assigned you a case number but hasn't called back, and the dealer refused to provide a loaner vehicle while the problem remains unfixed. The repair will likely involve either treating the corroded subframe or replacing it entirely if the damage is too severe.

Your front right control arm broke while driving straight at 40 mph, causing your car to swerve off the road and requiring a tow. The mechanic found the break was caused by rust and rot, and both front control arms were replaced. This appears to be a recurring issue without a recall, and could result in a serious accident at higher speeds.

Your Tucson's rear sub-frame has severe rust damage. A New York State inspection station warned that your vehicle will likely fail the 2020 NYS safety inspection because of this rust. Fixing this will require professional inspection and likely replacement or extensive repair of the rusted sub-frame components.

Electrical System,engine →1 issue
Your car has accelerated on its own multiple times, even while parked, reaching speeds up to 25 mph without you pressing the gas pedal. You had to shift into neutral to stop it. This appears to be caused by a malfunction in the engine control module (ECM), which manages engine signals and fuel delivery. The issue may require ECM diagnosis and possible replacement or reprogramming.

Engine,power Train →1 issue
While driving at 65 mph, your vehicle sometimes doesn't respond when you try to accelerate—the engine RPMs don't increase and the car won't speed up, even though no warning lights appear. This happened on several occasions, but the vehicle was never diagnosed or repaired. The issue may involve fuel delivery, ignition timing, or transmission response when you press the accelerator.

Exterior Lighting →1 issue
Your brake lights don't turn on when you press the brake pedal. This is a safety issue because other drivers won't see when you're braking. The problem could be a burned-out bulb, a faulty brake light switch, or a wiring issue, and will likely require inspecting the brake light assembly and replacing the bulb or switch as needed.

Power Train,engine →1 issue
Your 2005 Tucson has been plagued with persistent check engine codes since January 2021, starting with oxygen sensor and mass air flow sensor problems. You've had the mass air flow sensor, oxygen sensors, battery, alternator, CV boots, head gasket seals, and spark plugs replaced, but new codes keep appearing—most recently a catalyst system code (P0420) that hasn't been resolved even after using catalytic converter cleaner. The repairs may require diagnosis and replacement of the catalytic converter or related exhaust system components.

Engine →1 issue
After refueling, your car won't start right away, and once it does start, it accelerates on its own without you pressing the gas pedal. A mechanic found that the NOX sensor, purge valve, fuel trim sensor, and camshaft sensor were faulty and replaced them, but the problem came back 10 days later. The dealership was notified but the manufacturer was not. This issue may require sensor replacement or fuel system diagnostics to prevent the unintended acceleration from happening again.

Suspension,unknown Or Other →1 issue
During a wheel alignment service, you discovered severe rust on the rear left side of your vehicle's undercarriage. The subframe in that area has rusted completely through, and you've already had to replace rusted lower control arms. This rust damage affects your suspension's structural integrity and should be inspected by a technician to determine what repairs are needed.
