While driving, your Escape started running rough, the check engine light came on, and the vehicle slowed down significantly. The next day, you noticed knocking sounds, smoke coming from the engine, and the engine wouldn't respond to the gas pedal. A mechanic diagnosed a blown engine. The repair will likely require a complete engine replacement or major internal engine work.

I HAVE A 2005 ESCAPE I BOUGHT FOR MY 19YEAR OLD DAUGHTER. THE CAR KEEPS STALLING OUT PUTTING HER AT RISK DRIVING TO AND FROM WORK. WE CHANGED THE GAS FILTER AND MAKE SURE THE FLUIDS ARE CHECKED ON A REGULAR BASIS BUT IT DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE HELPED. THE CAR KEEPS STALLING OUT. SHE WILL BE DRIVING AND IT JUST CUTS OFF. DOESN'T MATTER WHAT ROAD SHE'S ON, CITY OR HIGHWAY IT HAS DONE THE SAME THING REPEATEDLY.

I RESTARTED THE CAR AND RESUMED DRIVING, BUT WITHIN 5 MINUTES THE WARNING LIGHTS FLASHED ON/OFF AGAIN AND THE CAR LOST POWER AND DIED AGAIN. THIS HAPPENED 3 TIMES WITHIN AN 30 MINUTES AS I DROVE TO THE FORD SERVICE CENTER. ON THE 3RD TIME THE CAR WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND BEGAN TO MOVE BACK AND FORTH, AND STARTED TO LOSE POWER. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND I BEGAN TO TURN THE VEHICLE IT AGAIN LOST POWER. AFTER THE 1ST POWER LOSS I HEADED TO THE FORD SERVICE CENTER WHICH WAS LOCATED 5 MILES AWAY. THE VEHICLE DIED 3 TIMES BEFORE I REACHED THE SERVICE CENTER. THE SERVICE CENTER DETERMINED THAT IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY.

AFTER THE LIGHT COMES ON, THE GAS PEDAL IS NO LONGER RESPONSIVE AND YOU HAVE TO HOPE YOU CAN COAST OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. ONCE YOU STOP SAFELY AND TURN OFF THE CAR, AFTER WAITING 5-10 MINUTES, THE CAR USUALLY COMES BACK ON, WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE IT IS DUE TO SOME SORT OF OVERTEMP CONDITION.

A FAMILY MEMBER HAD HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH HER 2005 FORD ESCAPE. I CHECKED WITH THE DEALER TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOT. HOWER,INFORMATION ON CARCOMPLAINTS.COM STATED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ISSUED IN OCTOBER, 2014. I WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL. UPON CALLING FORD, I WAS TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL, AND THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, AND I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR. THE TOTAL COST OF THE REPAIR WAS OVER $2,00,WHICH I FEEL I SHOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR. HOW CAN FORD PICK AND CHOOSE WHICH VEHICLES THEY WILL REPAIR? EVIDENTLY SAFETY IS OF NO CONCERN TO THEM.

THERE IS A TSB OUT ON THIS "KNOWN" ISSUE HOWEVER THE WARRANTY PERIOD ONLY EXTENDS UP TO 80,000 MILES. PRETTY CONVENIENT SINCE THE AVERAGE FAILURE MARKER IS 98K MILES. ALSO CONVENIENT THAT FORD WAITED UNTIL 99.99% OF ALL AFFECTED DRIVERS WOULD BE OUTSIDE OF THEIR "WARRANTY" PERIOD BEFORE GRACIOUSLY EXTENDING SAID "WARRANTY". HOGWASH. I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO THE MECHANIC THAT TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED TO HAVE MY ENGINE COILS AND PLUGS REPLACED AND THAT FORD HAD PUT OUT A BULLETIN EXPLAINING THIS PROBLEM. AFTER THEY FIXED THAT, I LEARNED THAT I ALSO HAD TO HAVE THE COMPUTER REPLACED BECAUSE THE ENGINE COILS AND PLUGS CAUSED A PROBLEM WITH THE COMPUTER. I DECIDED TO SEARCH THE INTERNET TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE WAS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I FOUND MANY WEBSITES AND FORUMS EXPLAINING THE VERY SAME PROBLEM OCCURRING IN OTHER 2005 FORD ESCAPES. IT SEEMS THAT IF THIS MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM (ENOUGH FOR FORD TO PUT OUT A BULLETIN EXPLAINING HOW TO FIX IT), THEN FORD SHOULD TAKE STEPS TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION. REPLACED THE SPARK PLUGS, ALL 6 COILS AND THE COMPUTER WAS FRIED. AFTER A BIT OF RESEARCH ONLINE, I SAW THAT THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS UNSAFE ISSUE WITH THE 2005 ESCAPE. SOME SUDDENLY STOPPING ON THE INTERSTATE. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ, IT IS DUE TO THE SPARK PLUGS FORD INSTALLED IN THE 2005 ESCAPE. NOT UNDERSTANDING WHY THERE IS NO RECALL. OUR 2005 FORD ESCAPE HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED AT THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED. THIS CAN BE VERIFIED BY CHECKING THE SERVICE RECORDS AT DALE JARRETT FORD, INDIAN TRAIL, NC. ON 2/25/12, THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED AS HAVING AN OIL LEAK BETWEEN THE MAIN ENGINE BLOCK AND THE CRANKSHAFT CRADLE. THE SEAL BETWEEN THESE TWO FOUNDATIONAL STRUCTURAL PARTS OF THE ENGINE IS A SIMPLE APPLIED BEAD OF SILICONE SEALANT, RATHER THAN A FIXED GASKET. BECAUSE OF THE LOCATION OF THE LEAK, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE MOST COST EFFECTIVE REPAIR IS TO COMPLETELY REPLACE THE ENGINE, RATHER THAN INCUR THE LABOR CHARGES OF TOTALLY DISASSEMBLING THE ENGINE TO REPAIR THIS SEAL. THE PROJECTED COST FOR THIS REPAIR IS $4,000.00 TO $5,000.00. WE FEEL THIS IS A PREMATURE AND CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF A DESIGN COMPONENT OF THE VEHICLE'S ENGINE. MECHANIC SAID IT MIGHT BE THE COMPUTER BUT SAID TAKE CAR TO FORD DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC CHECK TO BE SURE. TOOK CAR TO A FORD SERVICE DEPT. FOR DIAGNOSTIC. WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS IN THE A AND C COILS AND PLUGS. WHEN I SAID I ALREADY HAD THOSE REPLACED, HE IMMEDIATELY SAID "THEN THOSE PARTS MUST BE BAD AND/OR THE WIRES ARE BAD AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO TRACE ALL WIRES TO FIND BAD ONES AND REPLACE THEM". THE ESTIMATED COST FOR THE REPAIR $1100. I ASKED IF THE PROBLEM COULD BE THE COMPUTER. SERVICE REP SAID, "OH, NO COMPUTER IS NOT THE PROBLEM". PAID $100 FOR DIAGNOSTIC CHECK. TOOK CAR BACK TO MY MECHANIC, HE TRACED ALL THE WIRES AND DID NOT FIND A SINGLE BAD WIRE. ACCORDING TO MY MECHANIC, THE ONLY OTHER THING IT COULD BE, BASED ON THE WAY THE CAR IS ACTING, IS THE COMPUTER. I PRICED A COMPUTER. IT COSTS ABOUT $495. SO THE QUOTE FROM THE DEALERSHIP NOW MAKES MORE SENSE CONSIDERING THAT THE COST OF THE COMPUTER IS ABOUT HALF OF THE $1100 THEY SAID IT WOULD COST TO TRACE WIRES AND REPLACE PLUGS AND COILS. SO BASED ON THE FORD SERVICE DEPT DIAGNOSIS, CONVERSATION AND QUOTE, FORD KNOWS THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THE 2005 FORD ESCAPES. THIS TIME I TOOK MY CAR TO A FORD SERVICE CENTER. THIS TIME I NOTICED THAT MY CAR WOULD RUN OK UP TO ABOUT 35 MPH AND THEN AFTER THAT SPEED IT WOULD START JERKING. CATALYTIC CONVERTERS AND FLEX PIPE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED AS HAVING SIGNIFICANT RESTRICTION TO CAUSE DRAMATIC POWER LOSS TO THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING. THIS CONDITION CAUSES ABNORMAL BACK PRESSURES IN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WHICH ALSO CAUSES MULTIPLE MISFIRES AND SETS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE FLEX PIPE IS ALSO DEFECTIVE AND LEAKS. I HAVE OWNED MANY FORD VEHICLES THROUGH THE YEARS. ONE WAS A 1994 LINCOLN TOWN CAR WITH OVER 400,000 MILES. ANOTHER WAS A 1998 TOWN CAR WITH OVER 200,000 MILES. NEVER ONCE DID I HAVE TO REPLACE ANYTHING ON THE EXHAUST SYSTEM,ESPECIALLY CATALYTIC CONVERTERS (THE MOST EXPENSIVE PART IN THE SYSTEM). WE GOT IN THE CAR STARTED IT UP AND THEN WHEN LOOKING AT THE MAP I LOOKED UP AND SMOKE WAS POURING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. AS I JUMPED OUT THE DOOR CAME BACK AND GOUGED MY NOSE OPEN. WHILE BLEEDING ALL OVER THE PLACE I OPENED THE HOOD AND POURED WATER OVER THE FIRE. THE CAR HAD CAUGHT ON FIRE JUST UNDER THE REAR SIDE OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. AFTER EXTINGUISHING THE FIRE, I CALLED THE LOCAL SANTA MARIA FORD DEALER, WHO ONLY OFFERED OUR SERVICE DEPARTMENT WILL BE OPEN TOMORROW. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER THAT DAY AND WHILE THERE DECIDED TO HAVE MY WIFE LOOK AT A NEW CAR. REGARDLESS OF THE FACT THAT I PUT THE FLAMES OUT EARLY AND I AS A MAINTENANCE OFFICER WITH 24 YEARS EXPERIENCE I COULD HAVE FIXED THE CAR, I WANTED MY WIFE TO HAVE A NEW CAR SO WHEN I LEAVE HER BEHIND FOR MY NEXT DUTY STATION IN THE MARINE CORPS AND DEPLOY, I WOULD NOT HAVE ANY WORRIES. THE SALES EXPERIENCE WAS WHAT I EXPECTED BUT MY BIGGEST ISSUES WERE THAT, ALTHOUGH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WAS CLOSED, OUT OF LUCK, YEA RIGHT, THE SERVICE MANAGER STOPPED BY TO WORK ON HIS RV AND ASSISTED IN THE APPRAISAL OF MY 2005 ESCAPE THEN LEFT BEFORE I KNEW HE WAS THERE. DUE TO THE FORD DEFECT, FIRE DAMAGE, THEY OFFERED MY $2,000 FOR A TRADE IN. I TALKED THEM INTO AROUND $4,200. I HAD A CAR THAT COST ME $28,000 SIX YEARS AGO AND DUE TO A DEFECT I GOT AROUND $4,200 FOR IT IN GREAT SHAPE, EXCEPT THE VERY SMALL FIRE DAMAGE> LUCKILY WE HAD THE FIRE IN A PARKING LOT NOT WHILE ON A BACK ROAD, OFF ROAD, TRAFFIC JAM. THE NEXT DAY, THE MISFIRING HAPPENED AGAIN AND THE FORD DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED IT AS A BAD PRC COMPUTER. FORD REPLACED THE MAIN COMPUTER, UNDER WARRANTY, AT ABOUT 79,900 MILES. THE MISFIRE WENT AWAY FOR ABOUT 3 WEEKS AND THEN RECURRED AT 82,000 MILES. THIS TIME, THE CAR DRAMATICALLY LOST POWER, WILL NOT PROPERLY SHIFT INTO GEAR, SHAKES WHEN IDLING AND MAXES OUT AT ABOUT 30 MPH ON ANY HILL. THE SERVICE EMISSIONS MESSAGE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ARE CONSTANTLY ON. I TOOK IT TO THE SAME FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED THE COIL PACKS ARE ALL MISFIRING AND CAUSING THE MAIN COMPUTER TO FRY. THEY STATED THAT ALL 6 COILS NEED REPLACED AT A COST OF $900, AND THE MAIN COMPUTER ALSO NEEDS REPLACED AGAIN. THE COMPUTER REPLACEMENT WILL BE FREE, BECAUSE IT WAS JUST REPLACED 3 WEEKS AGO WHEN THE PART WAS STILL COVERED UNDER AN 80,000 MILE WARRANTY. THEY HAD IT FOR 3 DAYS AND SAID THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. WE WERE CHARGED WITHOUT PRIOR NOTIFICATION. ON 9/01/2010, THE FUEL FILTER WAS REPLACED AT THE SAME DEALERSHIP. ON THE WAY HOME, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO OVERHEAT. IT STOPPED RUNNING IN TRAFFIC AND WE WERE ALMOST HIT. IT WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER ON 9/07/2010 TO BE LOOKED AT AT THE ADVICE OF FORD. THEY FOUND A FAULTY WATER PUMP, REPLACED IT AND A FILTER, AND WE WERE TOLD THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED. ON 9/09/2010, THE VEHICLE ONCE AGAIN OVERHEATED, STRANDING US AGAIN. WHILE DRIVING MY 2005 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID THE FOLLOWING OCCURRED. I WAS STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION AND WHEN I BEGAN MAKING A LEFT TURN, AN ALARM SOUNDED, A RED WRENCH SYMBOL, AND RED EXCLAMATION MARK LIT UP ON THE DASH. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED TO THE CURB AND THE CAR LOST ALL POWER AND STEERING LOCKED UP. THE CAR RESTARTED AND I TOOK IT TO FORD. THE SERVICE REP SAID THE CAR WENT INTO A "FAIL SAFE MODE" WHICH IT DOES TO PROTECT THE HYBRID BATTERY FROM OVERHEATING. I WAS TOLD THAT THE ALARM AND SYMBOLS OCCUR TO GIVE YOU ABOUT 5 MINUTES TO SAFELY GET OFF THE ROAD. THIS DID NOT HAPPEN. THE CAR JUST LOST POWER IMMEDIATELY. THE FORD DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THAT A COOLANT PUMP FOR THE HYBRID BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED WHICH WAS DONE. FIVE WEEKS LATER THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. I WAS STOPPED AT A LIGHT AND WHEN I BEGAN TURNING RIGHT, THE ALARM SOUNDED, THE RED WRENCH AND EXCLAMATION LIGHT LIT UP AND THE CAR LOST ALL POWER IMMEDIATELY. AGAIN, I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE SO I TOOK IT BACK TO FORD TO BE LOOKED AT. THEY REPLACED A "SUSPECT" COOLING PUMP RELAY AND ROAD TESTED THE CAR. THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. MY CONCERN IS THAT THIS VEHICLE'S "FAIL SAFE MODE" MAKES THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN IMMEDIATELY. BOTH TIMES I WAS ABLE TO MOVE INTO AN EMERGENCY LANE, BUT WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I WAS ON A FREEWAY AND THE CAR JUST STOPPED? I AM CONCERNED THAT OTHER FORD ESCAPE HYBRIDS MAY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND IT IS A REAL SAFETY HAZARD. THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED MY GRANDCHILDREN WERE IN THE BACKSEAT AND I COULD HAVE BEEN REAR ENDED. CAR WAS TOWED THE REST OF THE WAY TO THE GARAGE. CAR HAD BEEN DRIVEN NO MORE THAN 10 MILES AFTER FIRST SIGN OF FAILURE. FIRE WAS SMALL ENOUGH TO NOT INVOLVE POLICE OR FIRE DEPARTMENTS, SO NO FIRE OR POLICE REPORT IS AVAILABLE. NO ONE WAS INJURED AND NO PROPERTY DAMAGE OCCURRED OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE BEGAN MAKING LOUD, HORRIBLE NOISES FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. IT SOUNDED AS IF THE ENGINE WOULD FALL APART. THE CONTACT PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT A NEW ENGINE WAS NEEDED BECAUSE THE CONNECTION ROD SHATTERED IN THE ENGINE. THE DEALER WAS CONVINCED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT WELL MAINTAINED; THEREFORE, THEY DID NOT ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIRS. THE CONTACT BELIEVES THAT THIS WAS DUE TO A MANUFACTURER DEFECT AND THEY SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS. THE ENGINE WAS REMOVED BY HER HUSBAND AND REPLACED WITH A NEW ENGINE. ABOUT 6 WEEKS AGO, MY WIFE CALLED ME AT WORK TO REPORT HER 2005 ESCAPE "MADE A FUNNY NOISE" WHEN SHE TRIED TO START IT. WHEN I GOT HOME THAT AFTERNOON, I WENT TO INVESTIGATE IT. WHEN I PUT THE KEY IN AND TURNED IT ON, IT EXPLODED. THE INTAKE MANIFOLD DISENTERGRATED AND SCHRAPNEL FROM IT SEVERED WIRING HARNESS, KNOCKED PARTS OFF ETC. HAVING 39K MILES ON IT I HAD IT TOWED TO A LOCAL TOP RATED MECHANIC. AFTER THE MECHANIC REPAIRED THE MECHANICAL DAMAGE, HE SENT IT TO BEACH FORD FOR A PCM ISSUE. THEY REPLACED THE PCM (UNDER FORD WARRANTY, ADMITTING THAT THE COMPUTER WAS ?FRIED? AND THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH OTHER ESCAPES) BUT ABSOLVES ANY KNOWLEDGE OR RESPONSIBILITY AS TO WHY THE EXPLOSION OCCURRED IN THE FIRST PLACE BECAUSE A ?THIRD PARTY PERSON? REPAIRED THE CAR BEFORE BEACH FORD SAW IT. A ?MIKE? AT FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE WHO BASED ON CONVERSATIONS WITH BEACH FORD, SAID THAT REPAIRS BY A THIRD PARTY PRECLUDES FORD FROM ANY RESPONSIBILITY AS TO WHY THE CAR EXPLODED IN THE FIRST PLACE. MY MECHANIC HAS DONE INTERNET RESEARCH AND FOUND OTHER REPORTS OF PCM ISSUES WITH THE ESCAPES CAUSING PROBLEMS FROM FAILURES TO EXPLOSIONS. A TECH AT THE FORD DEALER SAID IT HAS TO DO WITH STRAY VOLTAGE BEING INDUCED INTO THE WIRING AND GOING BACK UP INTO THE PCM, BUT THEN FORD AND THE SERVICE DIRECTOR DENIED ANY KNOWLDEGE OF THIS. FORD SAID THE CAR IS REPAIRED (AT MY EXPENSE) AND WASHED THEIR HANDS OF THIS SITUATION LEAVING ME WITH A CAR THAT HAS ONLY 39,000 MILES ON IT AND EXPLODED IN MY DRIVEWAY CAUSING SEVER DAMAGE, AND NO ATTEMPT TO INVESTIGATE WHY IT HAPPENED. I HAVE ALL THE DAMAGED PARTS THAT WERE REPLACED AND TOLD FORD THAT. NO ONE WILL ADDRESS WHY IT EXPLODED IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIS REPORT IS FOR THE THIRD OCCURRENCE (THERE HAVE BEEN 2 PRIOR OCCURRENCES IN THE PAST 6-8 WEEKS). THIS VEHICLE HAS ROUGHLY 17,900 MILES AND KEEPS SHUTTING ITSELF DOWN WITHOUT MUCH (IF ANY) WARNING. THIS TIME, I HAD ABOUT 2-4 SECONDS WARNING (WHICH WOULD NOT BE ADEQUATE IF THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN ON A HIGHWAY OR BUSY ROAD). I WAS IN A PARKING LOT ABOUT TO PULL OUT INTO TRAFFIC WHEN THE YELLOW WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON. BEFORE I COULD DO ANYTHING, THE VEHICLE SHUT ITSELF OFF. AT ABOUT 16,000 MILES, THE "HIGH MOTOR TEMPERATURE" WARNING CAME ON. I WAS ABLE TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY AND GET IT TOWED. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME IT WAS A BAD ELECTRIC WATER PUMP AND REPLACED IT. (I WAS LATER TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE WATER PUMP THAT FAILED WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM AT FORD - APPARENTLY A TRUCK CARRYING THESE WAS IN AN ACCIDENT AND BOXES OF THESE PUMPS LITERALLY FELL OUT OF THE TRUCK. FORD SUPPOSEDLY TESTED THEM AND DECIDED TO USE THEM ANYWAYS). ABOUT A WEEK LATER, I COULD TELL THERE WAS STILL SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. (IT HAD BEEN "SURGING" FORWARD WHEN COMING TO A STOP WITHOUT WARNING AND HAD MANY OTHER NOISES/ISSUES THAT WERE A SIGN THAT SOMETHING WAS STILL WRONG). I BROUGHT IT BACK - AND AFTER THEY EXAMINED IT THEY ASSURED ME THAT EVERYTHING WAS FINE. WITHIN 2 WEEKS, WE WERE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE "HIGH MOTOR TEMPERATURE" LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. MY HUSBAND GOT OFF AT THE FIRST EXIT AND TRIED TO GET IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP THAT WAS 2 BLOCKS AWAY. UNFORTUNATELY, WITHOUT WARNING, IT POWERED ITSELF DOWN RIGHT IN FRONT OF A CITY TRANSIT BUS. THIS TIME, THE DEALER SAID IT WAS THE WATER PUMP AND FUSE AGAIN AND REPLACED BOTH. THE SECOND TIME, AGAIN I WAS COASTING IN A PARKING LOT, ATTEMPTING TO TURN INTO A PARKING SPACE, WHEN THE ENGINE REVED UP HIGH AND THE VEHICLE AGAIN TOOK OFF.
