Risk: THIS CONDITION CAN RESULT IN INOPERATIVE WIPERS, REDUCING A DRIVER'S VISIBILITY, AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT BOARD AND COVER.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 342)
Service Brakes, Hydraulic →3 issues
While driving at about 25 mph, your brake pedal went all the way to the floor when you tried to brake. You noticed brake fluid leaking from the brake lines at your home. The brakes were not repaired, and this happened at 53,000 miles. A mechanic will need to locate and repair the leak in your brake lines and likely bleed or flush the entire brake system.

Your brake line burst without warning while you were slowing down at a stop sign, causing a complete loss of brakes when the line mounted below the radiator developed a 1-inch gap. The brake pedal went to the floor with no warning signs beforehand, though fortunately you were already slowing down. Repairing this required replacing most of your brake system components, costing nearly $2,000. The fix involved replacing the failed brake line and associated hydraulic components.

Your antilock brake system is activating unexpectedly at low speeds, and the problem has gotten worse over time. When it engages, your car takes longer to stop than it should. There's a known recall for 1999-2002 models with this same issue that the owner believes should cover 1996 vehicles as well. The fix will likely involve inspecting and possibly replacing antilock brake system components or updating the brake control module.

Tires →2 issues
Your front driver's side tire suddenly blew out while you were driving at 25 mph and turning left, causing you to lose steering control and crash into a guardrail. The tire was a Dexteero DHT2 (P265/75R/16) with only about 100 miles of use. The exact cause of the failure wasn't determined, but the sudden blowout made the vehicle unsafe to control.

You bought five Toyo Proxies (285/60/18) and experienced sidewall blowouts on two of them within six months, along with premature cracking on all five tires. A tire inspection business condemned the tires and confirmed the defects, but the manufacturer ultimately refused to warranty or prorate them after receiving the tires back. Because you travel highways frequently at high speeds, these sidewall failures created a serious safety risk that could have caused a severe accident.

Vehicle Speed Control →2 issues
Your vehicle suddenly shut down while driving with jerking motions before stopping completely. After this happens, you lose all power, the service engine light comes on, the anti-lock brake light turns on, and the transmission won't shift into second gear properly. This suggests multiple systems may be affected by the shutdown event.

Your cruise control system occasionally caused the vehicle to speed up unexpectedly. This issue occurred intermittently while cruise control was engaged. The problem may require diagnosis of the cruise control throttle linkage, vacuum lines, or electronic control module.

Air Bags →2 issues
Your vehicle's frame rails that hold the front airbag sensors are separating and rusting. This is a structural problem that affects how your airbags are mounted and could prevent them from working properly in a crash. Your dealer says replacement parts are no longer available for your 1996 model. You may need to have a mechanic fabricate or weld replacement frame sections and re-secure the airbag sensors.

Your airbag warning light is coming on while driving. A shop diagnosed that the driver's side airbag sensor needs replacement, but the part (GM #16162465) has been discontinued and is no longer available from GM or aftermarket suppliers. You'll need to contact GM or a dealer about alternative solutions for this safety system, as the original sensor cannot be sourced.

Exterior Lighting →2 issues
Your headlights won't turn on when you flip the switch, even after nearly $200 in diagnostic work. The repair shop found that wiring in the steering column has become frayed and damaged, likely from repeated use of the tilt steering wheel adjustment. You're currently using daytime running lights as a temporary workaround, but this is a safety concern since the lights failed while you were driving in the dark. The repair will likely involve replacing or rewiring the headlight circuit in the steering column.

Your headlights aren't turning on. You've already replaced both the headlight bulbs and the headlight switch, but the lights still won't work. This suggests an electrical wiring or connection problem rather than just a bulb or switch issue.

Service Brakes →1 issue
While driving at about 5 mph and pushing another vehicle, your brake pedal went down but the brakes didn't stop the vehicle, causing both vehicles to hit a wall. The airbags did not deploy during the crash. The vehicle has not been diagnosed or repaired to determine what caused the brake failure.

Electrical System,visibility/wiper →1 issue
Your vehicle's ignition key has shut off while driving on three separate occasions, causing the engine to stall in traffic at highway speeds—a serious safety hazard. Additionally, your wipers are working intermittently and sometimes get stuck mid-windshield or jump erratically across the glass. The ignition issue will likely require inspection of the ignition switch and electrical connections, while the wiper problem may involve the wiper motor or control module.

Engine And Engine Cooling →1 issue
While driving at 55 mph, your four-wheel drive light came on and started flashing, then smoke began pouring from under the hood and your engine stalled. When you opened the hood, the smoke got worse, though no fire was visible at that moment. This happened at 168,000 miles and required the vehicle to be towed. The repair will likely involve inspecting the engine bay for overheating, electrical shorts, or fluid leaks that caused the smoking.

Visibility →1 issue
Your right windshield wiper stopped working while you were driving in the rain, leaving you with severely limited visibility. Replacing the wiper blade didn't fix the problem, so the issue is likely with the wiper motor or transmission mechanism that moves the blade back and forth.

Engine And Engine Cooling,fuel System, Gasoline,exterior Lighting,visibility →1 issue
Your windshield wipers have stopped working normally and were repaired in 2001, but the dealer noted they're only working temporarily and could fail again. You've also experienced multiple issues: the vehicle wouldn't start due to a fuel pump problem, the headlights won't turn on, the engine shakes and stalls, white smoke comes from the muffler, and the check engine light is on. These problems will likely require the fuel pump to be replaced, the headlight switch to be inspected, and the engine to be diagnosed for the shaking and smoke issues.

Steering →1 issue
Your power steering system is freezing up when you try to turn corners. You've checked the power steering fluid level and confirmed there are no leaks in the system. The issue likely involves the power steering pump, hoses, or internal steering components that may need inspection or replacement.

Seats →1 issue
Your driver's side power seat won't move or adjust. You've noticed similar complaints online and are wondering if there's been a recall. The seat motor or control system may need repair or replacement to restore power seat operation.

Electrical System →1 issue
When you start your truck, it occasionally misfires or backfires, causing grey smoke to come from under the hood and seep into the cabin through the dashboard. This happens a few times a month, though the dealership wasn't able to reproduce the problem. The issue likely involves checking the ignition system, fuel delivery, or engine seals to prevent smoke from entering the cabin.

Structure →1 issue
The paint on your driver's side front fender and hood has been chipping and peeling off since around 2009. Despite keeping your Tahoe in excellent condition as the original owner, the paint continues to deteriorate. This may involve sanding down the damaged area, applying primer, and repainting the affected panels.
