VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL 2009-2012 JETTA AND JETTA SPORTWAGEN VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 2008 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, MODEL YEAR 2010-2012 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 2009 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, AND MODEL YEAR 2010-2012 AUDI A3 VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 2009 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2011, THAT ARE EQUIPPED WITH A 2.0L TDI COMMON RAIL DIESEL ENGINE/CLEAN DIESEL ENGINE. THE FUEL INJECTION PULSES COULD COINCIDE WITH THE NATURAL FREQUENCY OF THE INJECTOR LINE #2, IN SPECIFIC LOAD AND RPM CONDITIONS. THIS RESONANCE CREATES ADDITIONAL STRESS IN THE FUEL LINE.

Fix: VOLKSWAGEN WILL INSTALL AN IMPROVED FUEL INJECTOR LINE FOR THE NUMBER 2 CYLINDER ON CERTAIN VEHICLES AND WILL INSTALL VIBRATION DAMPERS ON ALL OF THE INJECTOR LINES. VOLKSWAGEN AND AUDI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS TO HAVE THE VEHICLES REPAIRED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLKSWAGEN AT 1-800-822-8987.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH, THE VEHICLE HESITATED AND THE ENGINE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THAT THE HIGH COMPRESSION FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WHILE DRIVING IN LOCAL, I WAS SO SCARED WHEN MY 09 VW JETTA SPORTWAGEN TDI SUDDENLY STOPPED, COMPLETELY OUT OF POWER. THE CAR STOPPED RIGHT BEFORE WE ENTERED THE INTERSECTION. IT COULDN'T BE ABLE TO RESTART. THERE WERE NO ENGINE LIGHT ON, NO WARNING SIGNS. THE CAR JUST COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN WITHOUT ANY SIGNS AND WE HAVE TO HAVE IT TOWED. I CONSIDER THIS AS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE SINCE IF THE CAR JUST SHUT DOWN LIKE THAT WHILE ON FREEWAY, IT COULD LEAD TO MANY CAR ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS. THE DIAGNOSIS SHOWED THAT THERE IS METAL PIECES FLOW INSIDE THE FUEL LINE WHICH CAUSE FUEL SYSTEM DAMAGE AND BREAK DOWN THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP. THIS ISSUES HAS BEEN HAPPENING TO CARS IN THE SAME MODEL WHICH HAS BEEN REPORTED OVER THE YEARS. NHTSA SHOULD HAVE SOLUTIONS FOR THIS SAFETY ISSUES WITH THESE VW'S CAR MODELS TO PREVENT SERIOUS CAR ACCIDENTS ESPECIALLY ON HIGHWAY. *TR

BY THE TIME I FOUND A SAFE SPOT TO PULL OVER THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN COMPLETELY. MY CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO AN AUTOSHOP WHERE I WAS TOLD THAT MY CARS HIGHPRESSURE FUEL PUMP SHUT DOWN AND CONTAMINATED THE WHOLE FUEL SYSTEM WITH METAL FROM THE SECONDARY FUEL PUMP.I HAD PURCHASED THIS CAR USED JUST THIS FEBRUARY FOR $15000 AND NOW I HAVE TO PAY A BILL OF $7000 TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE IT AGAIN.I DID DO SOME RESEARCH AND DISCOVERED THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY DRIVER WITH A 2009 VW JETTA WHERE THE HIGHPRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILED. *TR

MY VW JETTA TDI 2009 STALLED IN TRAFFIC IN DEC. 2010, IT WAS ONLY A YEAR OLD WITH 23,000 MILES. THE DEALER SAID I MUST HAVE PUT REG. GAS AND NOT DIESEL. I SAID I HAD RECEIPTS AND HE COULD TEST IT TO PROVE I HADN'T. THE DAMAGE WAS $8,000 FOR A NEW FUEL SYSTEM INCLUDING TANK. IT WAS CALLED A HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP MALFUNCTION WITH FUEL SYSTEM CONTAMINATION. HE SAID THERE WAS METAL SHARDS THAT DISINTEGRATED THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. IT WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. NOW AUGUST 7, 2014, THE EXACT SAME THING OCCURRED AND IT IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY BUT THE DEALER WILL COVER IT AGAIN FOR FREE. CHECKING ON-LINE, I SEE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL OR WE SHOULD GET A NEW CAR. I ASKED DEALER IF HE COULD GUARANTEE IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN AND HE CAN'T! LUCKILY I WAS NOT ON THE FREEWAY WHERE THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY DANGEROUS, AND I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF A COUNTRY ROAD, CALLING FOR A TOW TRUCK. ANALYSIS FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS ON A VW SERVICE BULLETIN SHOWS THE PRIMARY FUEL PUMP THAT SUPPLIES THE SYSTEM FAILED AND THE VANE PUMP RELEASED METAL INTO THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM, GETTING PAST THE FILTER (ANOTHER DEFECT?) AND GOING ALL THE WAY TO THE INJECTORS. THE ENTIRE SYSTEM EXCEPT THE GAS TANK WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. VW SAYS THIS $7000 REPAIR IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. VW SHOULD HAVE RECALLED THE FAULTY FUEL PUMP AND FAULTY FILTER THAT ALLOWED THE METAL TO CONTINUE INTO THE ENTIRE SYSTEM. I AM BEING TOLD THAT ONE DEALERSHIP IS HANDLING 2-3 OF THESE CASES A WEEK! NHTSA HAS A CURRENT INVESTIGATION ONGOING ON THIS ISSUE, I HOPE YOU CAN HELP, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN VERY DANGEROUS, AS MY DAUGHTER WAS SUPPOSED TO TAKE THE CAR TO COLLEGE THIS WEEKEND AND THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY OR IN ORLANDO CITY TRAFFIC. I HAD JUST PULLED OFF A HIGHWAY TO TURN AROUND IN A BUSINESS DRIVEWAY/PARKING LOT. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MANEUVER, THE ENGINE CUT OUT. I TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR NUMEROUS TIMES, BUT WAS UNABLE TO RESTART IT. I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE VW DEALERSHIP AS I HAD JUST PURCHASED THE USED CAR TWO WEEKS AGO AND IT WAS A CERTIFIED VEHICLE. I JUST TALKED TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TODAY AND THEY TOLD ME THAT I HAD PUT BAD FUEL IN THE VEHICLE. I HAD FILLED THE TANK ONE WEEK BEFORE WITH ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL. WHEN ASKED WHAT I COULD HAVE DONE TO PREVENT THIS, I WAS TOLD THAT I SHOULD HAVE GONE TO A MAJOR BRAND OF GAS STATION - HE DID NOT EVEN ASK WHICH GAS STATION I WENT TO. HE DESCRIBED THAT THE BAD DIESEL CAUSED THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP TO EXPLODE AND SEND METAL SHAVINGS THROUGH THE SYSTEM. THEY HAVE HAD TO REPLACE, FLUSH, OR CLEAN EVERYTHING THAT THE FUEL TOUCHED. HE SAID VW WILL COVER MOST OF THE REPAIRS, BUT I WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR APPROXIMATELY $450 WORTH (I DO NOT RECALL WHAT FOR). THE REPAIRS ARE CURRENTLY UNDERWAY. I WAS SURPRISED WHEN THE EST'D COST OF $7,500 TO REPAIR MY CAR WAS PRESENTED TO US WITH NO OFFER OF HELP BY VW. TURNED OFF CAR, CHECKED UNDER HOOD, NO NOTICEABLE ISSUES. RESTARTED CAR, NO LIGHTS OR WARNINGS. DRIVES NORMAL. CALLED DEALER AND BROUGHT IN LATER THE SAME DAY WITH 42,259 MILES. THEY PUT IT ON THE COMPUTER AND FOUND A TSB 2020606 FOR A SOFTWARE UPDATE. DROVE VEHICLE OUT OF DEALER LOT, GOT ON HIGHWAY APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES FROM DEALERSHIP IN 6TH GEAR AROUND 70 MPH AND SAME ISSUE WITH FLASHING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND LOSS OF POWER. IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WITH THE FLASHING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STILL ON. THEY BROUGHT INTO THE SHOP AND WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANY ISSUE. PERFORMED ANOTHER SOFTWARE REFLASH. HAD TO PAY $102.60 (ONE HOUR OF LABOR, PLUS TAX). THIS ISSUE HAD BEEN ONGOING FOR MONTHS, THROUGH THE SUMMER WITH NO RESOLUTION. TYPICALLY HAPPENS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, BUT SOMETIMES IN 2ND OR 3RD GEAR ON LOCAL ROADS. FINALLY, IN SEPTEMBER WITH APPROXIMATELY 54K MILES, CAR ONCE AGAIN HAD ISSUE ON HIGHWAY. THIS TIME, RESTARTED, AND A SOLID CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON. IMMEDIATELY CALLED VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA HOTLINE AND EXPLAINED MY ISSUE, STATED IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE AND I'M CONCERNED. THEY GAVE ME A CASE NUMBER AND TOLD ME TO CALL THE DEALER. DEALER WAS ABLE TO GET MY CAR IN LATER THAT DAY, AND WAS ABLE TO PULL CODES FOR FUEL SYSTEM ISSUE. DEALER TOOK A FUEL SAMPLE, FOUND SHAVINGS IN FUEL CANISTER, AND GOT AUTHORIZATION TO PERFORM WARRANTY REPAIRS OF ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM FROM VW. THEY SAID MY CAR WOULD BE FINE TO DRIVE FOR NOW. MY 2009 VW JETTA TDI BURST INTO FLAMES 15-20 MINUTES AFTER BEING PARKED. NO ONE WAS IN OR NEAR THE CAR AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR EXTENDED FIRE DAMAGE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. THE HOTSPOT IS IN THE FRONT LEFT OF THE CAR, WITH SEVERE DAMAGE TO ALL COMPONENTS UNDER THE HOOD AND FRONT INTERIOR OF THE CAR. THE CAR HAD BEEN IN LIKE-NEW CONDITION WITH SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE PERFORMED ON-TIME BY A VW DEALER; THERE HAD NEVER BEEN ANY MAINTENANCE OR PERFORMANCE ISSUES THAT I KNEW OF PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. ON TRIP A FEW DAYS LATER AT 41,070 THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILED, CONSEQUENCES WERE A DANGEROUS SITUATION DUE TO (1) BEING SUDDENLY WITHOUT POWER TO MOVE THE VEHICLE WITH OTHER VEHICLES APPROACHING BEHIND ME, AND ONCOMING. NOW THAT IT IS IN THE HUNDREDS IN HOUSTON, IT DOESN'T HAPPEN. WHEN I TOOK IT FOR AN OIL CHANGE LAST MONTH (JULY 2011), THEY DID A "SOFTWARE UPDATE AS WELL." THE ENGINE RAN A FEW SECONDS AND STALLED AGAIN WITH SAME DISPLAY WARNING. I COASTED OFF THE ROADWAY. THE VEHICLE WOULD THEN NOT RESTART AT ALL. MY VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALER NEXT DAY WHERE THEY DETERMINED THAT MY HPFP (HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP) HAD DISINTEGRATED AND CONTAMINATED THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. DEALER TRIED TO SAY MY DIESEL FUEL WAS CONTAMINATED BY GASOLINE. I PERSONALLY FUEL THE CAR EACH TIME FROM A LOCAL DIESEL STATION WHICH IS OWNED AND OPERATED BY A DIESEL ENTHUSIAST FAMILY. THEY DO NOT EVEN HAVE A GASOLINE PUMP ON SITE! VW AGREED TO FIX THE CAR UNDER WARRANTY BUT STATED THE ESTIMATE FOR THE JOB WOULD RUN BETWEEN $7000 - $10,000 IF NOT COVERED. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR 15 DAYS SO FAR AND IS NOT YET REPAIRED. A CALL TO VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA REVEALED THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF NUMEROUS INCIDENTS OF THIS NATURE IN THEIR NEW CLEAN DIESEL VEHICLES, BUT THAT THEY ARE BLAMING THE PROBLEM ON THE LOW QUALITY OF THE U S FUEL SUPPLY WITH RESPECT TO POOR LUBRICITY. HAD MY CAR STARTED, IT LIKELY WOULD HAVE STALLED ON THE HIGHWAY (LIKE MANY OTHERS) AND AT MINIMUM LEFT ME STRANDED AND POSSIBLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. I PUT EVERY DROP OF ULSD IN THE TANK (NOT A MISFUEL) AND HAVE RECEIPTS SHOWING SUCH STARTING AT ABOUT 20K MILES. AT ABOUT 26K MILES MY FUEL FILTER HAD SHINY VISIBLE METAL SPECKS ON TOP (LIKELY ALUMINUM FROM THE HPFP) AND WHAT LOOKED LIKE A COATING OF "DUST" ON THE TOP OF THE FILTER. DEALER DID THE 20K FUEL FILTER REPLACEMENT AND I INSPECTED MY FUEL FILTER FOR CONTAMINATION AT ABOUT 22K MILES AND THE FUEL FILTER TOP WAS PRISTINE. SO, THE SHINY SPECKS DEVELOPED BETWEEN 26K AND 22K MILES. AT 26K, THE DEALER REPLACED FUEL FILTER AND CLEANED FUEL FILTER CANISTER, INSPECTED METERING VALVE AND FUEL TANK FOR CONTAMINATION. ON FURTHER INSPECTION IN WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP (HPFP) HAD FELL APART INTERNALLY SENDING METAL BITS ALL THROUGHOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SHUTDOWN. THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM WAS REPLACED INCLUDING THE THREE FUEL PUMPS(ONE IN THE FUEL TANK, AND THE OTHERS AT THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT INCLUDING THE HPFP), FUEL LINES, INJECTORS, FUEL RAIL, FUEL FILTERS, AND ALL THE SENSORS IN THE FUEL SYSTEM. I ASKED THEM TO ADDRESS STALLING AND GIVEN THE OPEN INVESTIGATION BY NHTSA, TO CHECK FOR HPFP FAILURE. THEY ASSURED ME THAT THERE WERE A SERIES OF TESTS THAT THEY WOULD RUN BUT STATED THAT "PEOPLE SEE SOMETHING ON THE INTERNET AND BLOW IT OUT OF PROPORTION." THEY CLAIM THAT THEY PERFORMED AN ECM SOFTWARE UPDATE, WITH THIS SOFTWARE TELLING THE CAR HOW MUCH DIESEL IT NEEDS AT ANY PARTICULAR TIME GIVEN THE CONDITIONS, E.G. TEMPERATURE. THEY CLAIM THAT THEY REPLACED THE FUEL FILTER. WHEN WE ASKED THEM TO CONFIRM THAT THERE WAS NO DEBRIS (OR OTHER SIGN OF IMPENDING HPFP FAILURE) IN THE FUEL FILTER THEY WERE UNABLE TO. THEY REPLIED THAT THEY JUST REMOVE THE FUEL FILTER AND THROW IT AWAY BUT DON'T LOOK AT OR INSPECT IT. I HAVE DRIVEN IT TWICE SINCE PICK-UP, ABOUT 100 MILES. INFORMED HPFP HAD A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. I WAS INFORMED BY VW TO BRING THE CAR TO THEIR SHOP FOR FURTHER EVALUATION. AT THIS TIME I'M WAITING FOR A RESPONSE? HOPEFULLY THEY STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT, OR ARE THEY JUST ANOTHER CORPORATION THAT DOES NOT CARE FOR ITS CUSTOMERS. THE HPFP HAD NOT YET BLOWN BUT WOULD HAVE ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP IF I'D KEPT DRIVING WITHOUT HAVING THE INSTANCE OF THE GP LIGHT INVESTIGATED. WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE 5 IN CENTRAL OREGON, GOING APPROX. 60 MPH, 2009 DIESEL JETTA LOST POWER AND BEGAN TO STALL OUT. I HAD DRIVEN ALMOST 245 MILES ON THIS DAY (WITH THE SAME TANK OF FUEL), BEFORE THE STALL OCCURRED. MANY WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON THE DASH, INCLUDING A FLASHING GLOW PLUG LIGHT WITH ENGINE SYMBOL, ENGINE DEFAULT LIGHT AND WORKSHOP WARNING LIGHT. UPON COMING TO A STOP, THE CAR DIED COMPLETELY, WOULD NO LONGER START, AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO VW. UPON RECEIPT OF THE CAR, VW TRIED TO ACCUSE ME OF USING "BAD FUEL" BUT THEN CHANGED THEIR STORY, ONCE THEY DID MORE RESEARCH (AND THEY FOUND THAT MANY PEOPLE ACROSS THE US ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM). VOLKSWAGEN STATES THAT THERE IS A COMPLETE FUEL PUMP SYSTEM FAILURE, WITH METAL PARTICULATE IN THE FUEL FILTERS AND SYSTEM, AND ALL COMPONENTS MUST BE REPLACED. THIS IS CURRENTLY IN PROGRESS, AND I AM STRANDED APPROXIMATELY 1,000 MILES FROM MY HOME, WITH NO INDICATION OF A SET COMPLETION DATE FOR REPAIRS. SUBSEQUENTLY DETERMINED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP (HPFP) HAD FAILED AND CAUSED SIGNIFICANT FUEL SYSTEM DAMAGE. VW REPLACED ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM UNDER VEHICLE WARRANTY. RESEARCHED THE ISSUE AND DETERMINED THIS WAS NOT AN ISOLATED ISSUE FOR THIS VEHICLE (2009 VW JETTA TDI). MOREOVER, THE NOTION OF 'CONTAMINATED FUEL' SEEMS TO BE A CATCH-ALL PHRASE THAT DETRACTS FROM WHAT MAY BE THE REAL PROBLEM OF FAILED ENGINEERING AS IT RELATES TO THE HPFP. LASTLY, THE IMMEDIATE SHUTTING OFF OF THE ENGINE MADE FOR A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION DUE TO THE INABILITY TO EASILY STEER OR ACCELERATE TO A SAFE LOCATION. WHILE RETURNING TO THE INTERSTATE SPEEDS (DURING OR SHORTLY AFTER REACHING THEM) THE GLOW PLUG LIGHT BEGAN BLINKING, THE CAR LOST POWER AND WENT INTO "LIMP MODE" AND WAS INFORMED BY ITS COMPUTER THAT THERE WAS AN ENGINE MALFUNCTION AND TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER. WHILE EN ROUTE TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS (WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO CONTINUE OF THE CAR WAS STILL RUNNING AND NO RED MALFUNCTION LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED), A MARKED LOSS OF POWER WAS OBSERVED (EVEN CONSIDERING LIMP MODE), AND THE CAR BEGAN SHUDDERING. WHILE ON THE OFFRAMP, DECELERATED TO A RED LIGHT AT WHICH POINT THE ENGINE DIED COMPLETELY AND COULD NOT BE RESTARTED. PROCEEDED TO BE STUCK IN TRAFFIC WHILE WAITING FOR THE TOW TRUCK (IT WOULD HAVE BEEN UNSAFE TO ATTEMPT TO PUSH THE VEHICLE ACROSS THE INTERSECTION OR BACK ONTO THE OFFRAMP GIVEN TRAFFIC CONDITIONS). DEALER DIAGNOSED AS HIGH PRESSURE FUEL SYSTEM HAVING FACTORY CONTAMINATION, THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM IS BEING REPLACED (TANK, LOW PRESSURE FEED PUMP, HIGH PRESSURE PUMP, INJECTORS), ESTIMATED COST OF PARTS $5300, WITH 14 HOURS LABOR. IN JULY, 2009 I PURCHASED A 2009 VW JETTA TDI SPORTSWAGEN. THE CAR IS A TWO LITER DIESEL. AT 9900 MILES THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILED AND LEFT MY WIFE STRANDED IN TRAFFIC. VW OF AMERICA REPLACED THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM, FROM THE FUEL TANK TO THE FUEL INJECTORS. THE REPAIR RETAILS FOR APPROXIMATELY $10,000. I HAVE READ MANY COMPLAINTS ON THE VARIOUS WEBSITES ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND IT APPEARS TO BE A RECURRING ISSUE. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE GOING FORWARD AS MY WIFE DRIVES OUR GRANDCHILDREN TO SCHOOL IN THE CAR DAILY. EVERY TIME WE USE THE CAR, WE PRAY IT WILL NOT FAIL AGAIN. IT IS VERY STRESSFUL. VW WAS VERY COOPERATIVE AND EVEN GAVE US A LOANER VEHICLE. IN MY OPINION, VW SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO MAKE A RECALL OF ALL 2009 TDI DIESELS FOR AT LEAST A CHECK OF THE FUEL FILTER TO SEE IF IT HAS SOME METAL PARTICLES IN IT, WHICH IS AN INDICATION OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP DESTROYING ITSELF. THE DEAL TOLD ME OURS WAS FULL OF METAL SHAVINGS. EVEN THOUGH VW WAS COOPERATIVE IN FIXING THE PROBLEM, THEY GAVE ME NO ASSURANCE IT WOULDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN, IN FACT THEY WERE VERY VAGUE ABOUT IT. THEY INSISTED ON KEEPING ALL THE REPLACED PARTS SO THE HOME OFFICE COULD EVALUATE WHAT WENT WRONG. THIS INDICATES TO ME THEY KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON AND ARE BEING VERY SLY ABOUT JUMPING INTO A RECALL. THEY SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO AT LEAST INFORM OWNERS OF THE DANGER LURKING BECAUSE THE POTENTIAL FOR A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT IS CLEARLY THERE. MY WIFE WAS LUCKY THAT SHE WAS ABLE TO GET OFF THE ROADWAY WITHOUT INJURY. THE CAR HAS ANOTHER ISSUE WHICH CAN BE BEST DESCRIBED AS A "BOGGING" WHEN ACCELERATING. THE MECHANIC IN THE LOCAL AREA DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS CONTAMINATED FUEL BUT COULD NOT MAKE THE REPAIR. THE CAR WAS TOWED BACK TO CHARLOTTE WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILED AND IN ITS FAILURE DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR THE FUEL INJECTORS. THE MECHANIC IN CHARLOTTE PERFORMED EXTENSIVE REPAIRS, INCLUDING THE FUEL PUMP AND INJECTORS. THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO ME ON SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER 2, 2010. VW HAS REFUSED TO COVER IT UNDER THE WARRANTY. THE COST OF REPLACING THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM WILL BE $8,000-$10,000. HAVING RESEARCHED THE ISSUE ONLINE I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS AN OFTEN REPORTED OCCURRENCE AND A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE 2009 JETTA TDIS. IT APPEARS THAT VW IS COVERING THE PROBLEM IN MANY CASES BUT NOT IN OTHERS. VW SHOULD BE MORE RESPONSIBLE AND ADMIT THIS IS A PROBLEM AND COVER THE REPLACEMENT OF THE SYSTEMS. I WAS DRIVING IT HOME LAST DECEMBER WHEN SUDDENLY THE CHECK ENGINE TROUBLE LIGHTS STARTED FLASHING. THE CAR DIED AND WOULD NOT START AGAIN. IT HAD SOME 28,000 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME. I LIVE IN THE MOUNTAINS IN SOUTHERN OREGON. I TAKE MANY DAY TRIPS INTO THE MOUNTAINS OF OREGON AND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, WHERE NO CELL PHONE SERVICE IS AVAILABLE. WHILE DRIVING MY VEHICLE, THE GLOW PLUG LIGHT STARTED TO FLASH. I PULLED OVER AND CHECKED THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THE MANUAL SAID TO BRING THE CAR A DEALER FOR SERVICE. I CONTACTED MY DEALER WHO SAID TO BRING IT RIGHT IN. STARTED DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AT 50MPH AND APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES LATER THE CAR LOST ALL POWER AND SHUT DOWN. THE VACUUM ASSIST FOR THE BRAKES AND THE ELECRO-MECHANICAL STEERING SYSTEM WERE UNDER REDUCED LEVELS OF POWER. I MERGED TO THE FAR RIGHT AND OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AS QUICKLY AND SAFELY AS POSSIBLE. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL DEALER 45 MINUTES LATER. THAT EVENING, I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WERE METAL CHIPS IN THE FUEL FILTER HOUSING. I VIEWED THESE CHIPS MYSELF. THE TECHNICIAN NOTED THAT THE FUEL REMOVED FROM THE SYSTEM WAS IN FACT DIESEL, NOT GASOLINE. HE ALSO INDICATED THAT THE FUEL DID NOT APPEAR TO BE CONTAMINATED. I RESEARCHED ON THE WEB THAT THE VW TDI HAS BEEN SUFFERING UNEXPECTED HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURES. WHEN THE HPFP FAILS, IS SENDS METAL THROUGH THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. 2009 JETTA SPORTWAGON TDI UNDER 8000 MILES FIRST LONG ROAD TRIP - GA TO PA AND BACK. RETURNING HOME (ABOUT 9 HOURS AWAY) AND TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE, FIRST THE FLASHING GLOW PLUGS INDICATOR LIGHT COMES ON AND THEN THE CHECK ENGINE. THE ENGINE STARTING REDUCING IN POWER AS I MADE IT THE EXIT AND COULDN'T KEEP HIGHWAY SPEEDS. WHEN I GOT TO THE EXIT RAMP AND TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR, THE CAR STALLED AND WAS UNABLE TO BE MOVED. AFTER A TOW TO DEALERSHIP THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAD ENOUGH TIME TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE CAR BEFORE THEY CLOSED. I WAS TOLD THE FUEL PUMP WAS "SHREDDED" - THEY FOUND RUST AND METAL FRAGMENTS IN THE PUMP. THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM WAS REPLACED. IT WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE IT SEEM LIKE THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH THE TDI ENGINE. *TR

POSSIBLE EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE IS ONCE IN A WHILE WHEN THE CAR IS OFF AND PARKED THE ENGINE FAN WILL COME ON RUNNING VERY HIGH AND THE CAR SMELLS. THIS OCCURRED ABOUT 4 TIMES IN 4 MONTHS. THEN IN THE 5TH MONTH OF OWNERSHIP, WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, I HEARD A BEEP, LOOKED DOWN AT MY DASH AND BEFORE I COULD FINISH READING THE MESSAGE THE CAR DIED. THE DASH INDICATED SOMETHING ABOUT GET TO A WORKSHOP, THEN THE MESSAGE DISAPPEARED AND THE COIL LIGHT CAME ON. I PUT MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL AND NOTHING HAPPENED. THANKGOODNESS NO ONE WAS BEHIND ME OR WE WOULD HAVE BEEN HIT, I PUSHED THE CAR TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD AND CALLED A TOW TRUCK. I WAS 80 MILES FROM HOME AND JUST MINUTES FROM GETTING ON THE MAIN FREEWAY. I WAS TOWED TO THE NEAREST VW DEALER. IT WAS A WEEKEND SO THE SERVICE DEPT WAS CLOSED. MONDAY I WAS TOLD THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM WENT OUT AND WAS GOING TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED. IT WAS REPLACED. IT'S BEEN 4 WEEKS SINCE IT WAS REPLACED AND TODAY WHEN I DROVE 25 MILES AND PARKED MY CAR, THE ENGINE FAN CAME ON RUNNING VERY HIGH, AND LOUD WITH THE SMELL OF BURNT RUBBER AND SMOKE COMING FROM THE HOOD. I CALLED THE DEALER AND WILL BE TAKING IT INTO THE DEALER NEXT WEEK, THEY ARE CONCERNED WITH THE SMELL. *TR
