NHTSA Campaign: 01E041000

Component: TRAILER HITCHES

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION: THIS RECALL IS FOR TRAILER TOWING WIRE HARNESS CONVERTERS INSTALLED BY DEALERS OR FOR INSTALLATION ON 1999-2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA AND TACOMA VEHICLES. THE CONNECTORS INTEGRATE THE VEHICLE'S TAIL LIGHTS, BRAKE LIGHTS, AND TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS WITH THOSE EQUIPPED ON THE TRAILER, ARE DEFECTIVE. AFFECTED PART NUMBERS ARE: PT207-34000, PT207-34002, PT207-04981, AND PT214-04985. IN THE TUNDRA VEHICLES, THE CIRCUITRY UTILIZED IN THE CONVERTER WAS INADEQUATE TO PROPERLY MANAGE VEHICLE AND/OR TRAILER-SIDE VOLTAGE SPIKES. IF THE CONVERTER IS EXPOSED TO A VOLTAGE SPIKE, IT MAY CAUSE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT OR OPEN CIRCUIT WITHIN THE CONVERTER. IN THE TACOMA VEHICLES, DUE TO DEFICIENT WATERPROOFING AND IMPROPER INSTALLATION LOCATION OF THE CONVERTER, WHICH IS MOUNTED IN THE LOWER PORTION OF THE TAILGATE CAVITY OF THE VEHICLE, AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT WILL OCCUR IF WATER ENTERS THE CONVERTER HOUSING.

Risk: AN ELECTRICAL SHORT OR OPEN CIRCUIT CAN CAUSE A FAULT IN THE CONVERTER AND A NON-OPERATIONAL CONDITION OF THE TRAILER LIGHTS. IF THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN WITHOUT TRAILER LIGHTS, IT MAY BE DIFFICULT FOR OTHER DRIVERS TO SEE THE TRAILER, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Fix: DEALERS WILL NOTIFY THE CUSTOMERS AND INSTALL A REDESIGNED TRAILER TOWING WIRE HARNESS CONVERTER FREE OF CHARGE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 27, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

Your truck's frame is severely rusted and broken, creating a safety hazard. The dealer told you that the frame recall has expired and they won't cover the repair under warranty. You'll likely need to pay out-of-pocket for frame repair or replacement, which typically involves a professional inspection and structural welding or full frame replacement.

You noticed a metal strip hanging from underneath your truck and discovered the frame was heavily rusted. After inspection, you determined the truck wasn't safe to drive due to frame damage. You had the frame inspected at a Toyota dealer in 2009 and were told it was fine, but by 2016 the rust damage became severe, leaving you unable to use the truck for hauling and projects. Frame repair or replacement may be required to address the structural rust damage.

Your truck was recalled for frame corrosion and inspected at a Toyota dealer in November 2011, where it was deemed acceptable. However, when you had it inspected again in May 2018, it failed inspection because the frame corrosion had worsened significantly and was nearly rusted through. This suggests the frame damage progressed substantially between the two inspections despite the earlier clearance.

Your truck's frame has started rusting heavily over the last 6 months, even though it was in good condition during Toyota's previous frame recall period. You've contacted a Toyota dealership but haven't been able to get help with the issue. The frame rust appears to be developing from underneath the vehicle.

Your truck's undercarriage has severe corrosion underneath, which you discovered while inspecting the vehicle around 103,000 miles. You noticed the truck wasn't driving smoothly, though it made it back home safely. The corrosion wasn't professionally diagnosed or repaired, and Toyota didn't offer assistance when notified of the issue. Addressing this will likely involve professional undercarriage cleaning, rust treatment, and repair of any corroded structural components.

Your truck's frame has rusted completely through, even though a Toyota dealer inspected it for frame rust in 2014 when it had 207,000 miles and apparently passed inspection. Now in 2018 with only 15,000 additional miles, the rust has penetrated the frame. Addressing this will likely require professional frame repair or replacement, which is a significant structural repair.

Your truck failed its state inspection due to severe rust underneath the bed. The inspection revealed that the leaf springs are heavily rusted and the frame may need replacement. This rust damage developed over time and wasn't addressed by a dealer inspection. Fixing this will likely require replacing the rusted leaf springs and possibly the frame itself.

While driving over a bump at 20 mph, you heard a loud abnormal noise from your truck. When you inspected it, you found that the rear shock absorber had fractured and there was a hole in the frame. The dealership said the vehicle was sold as-is and wouldn't help. Repairing this will likely require replacing the shock absorber and having the frame damage assessed and repaired by a body shop or dealer.

After Toyota performed a preventive rust and corrosion treatment on your frame, you're now experiencing widespread rust throughout the frame, making the vehicle unsafe to drive. Toyota is claiming this was a voluntary program rather than an official recall and hasn't provided documentation to support the work performed. The frame remains at risk of cracking due to ongoing rust damage. You may need frame inspection, rust removal treatment, or protective coating reapplication to address the corrosion.
