NHTSA Campaign: 22V310000
Component: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
Gulf States Toyota, Inc. (GST) is recalling certain 2022 4Runner, Tacoma, Highlander, and Highlander Hybrid vehicles. The load carrying capacity modification labels may not be permanent and can fade, becoming illegible. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
Risk: An illegible label may allow the vehicle to be overloaded, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: GST will notify owners by mail, including a replacement load carrying capacity modification label for their vehicle and detailed replacement instructions, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 30, 2022. Owners may contact GST customer service at 1-800-444-1074. GST's number for this recall is 22R1.
NHTSA Campaign: 22V520000
Component: CHILD SEAT:VEHICLE LATCH ANCHOR
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Tacoma vehicles. One or more of the individual welds in the upper child seat anchors may be insufficient. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage System."
Risk: An insufficient weld may prevent the child seat from being anchored properly, allowing the seat to move during a sudden stop or crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: Dealers will inspect the upper child seat anchors and reweld the child seat anchors, as necessary. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 02, 2022. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 22TB09/ 22TA09.

Component: POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturer (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Tacoma vehicles. The axle shaft sub-assembly may separate from the axle housing due to debris causing improperly secured fasteners.
Risk: Axle shaft separation can cause a loss of vehicle stability and brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will inspect the rear axle assembly, tighten the axle retaining nuts as necessary, and repair or replace any damaged components, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 17, 2024. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 24TB05 and 24TA05.
Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 51)
Structure →4 issues
Your truck's frame welds—where the frame connects to suspension and steering components—showed significant corrosion across 80% of the welds within 6 months of ownership. This structural corrosion was documented as a warranty claim and resulted in a lemon law arbitration award for vehicle replacement. Frame corrosion can compromise structural integrity and safety, which is why this issue was considered severe enough to warrant replacement.

Your 2022 Tacoma's white paint is flaking and peeling near the driver's rear door window trim, which you discovered while drying the truck after washing. Toyota has a known paint failure issue affecting 2016-2022 white Tacomas in this same location, but when you contacted Toyota, they said your VIN wasn't included in their Customer Support Program 23TE08 for this defect, despite your truck matching the exact pattern of the problem. Addressing this will likely require Toyota to strip and repaint the affected area, or potentially a larger section of the door.

Your 2022 Tacoma's paint is chipping on the inside fender and window areas on the left side, despite the truck being less than 3 years old with only 20,000 miles and being kept in a garage. Toyota refused to cover the repair under warranty, citing that your VIN doesn't match a similar recall for white Tacomas with the same defect in the same locations. The repair will likely involve stripping and repainting the affected fender and window trim areas.

Your Tacoma is showing corrosion (rust) where the windshield meets the roof. This is a structural area that should be inspected to prevent further rust damage. The fix typically involves cleaning the corroded area, treating it with rust preventative, and possibly resealing the windshield if needed.

Air Bags →3 issues
Your Tacoma was hit on the passenger side in a collision, but the passenger-side airbag didn't deploy even though your son was sitting in the passenger seat wearing a seatbelt. The dealer's engineer said the occupancy sensor didn't detect a passenger, but you dispute this since your son was present and injured in the crash. Later, the manufacturer said they had no incident data to review. The airbag system may need inspection or sensor replacement to ensure it deploys correctly in future collisions.

Your 2022 Toyota Tacoma was hit on the passenger side at about 25 MPH in an intersection when another vehicle ran a red light. The airbags on the passenger side did not inflate during the crash, and you suffered a back injury that required medical treatment. Toyota has been notified and assigned a case number, but the vehicle has not yet been repaired. The issue may require inspection and replacement of the airbag system components to ensure they deploy properly in future impacts.

Your vehicle's infotainment screen displays pop-up messages and warning notifications while you're driving that are distracting and block your view of the dashboard. You received a recall notice alert and a large yellow hazard warning on the screen while driving at highway speeds, which caused distraction and concern. The owner is requesting that recall notifications be sent via email or phone instead of appearing on the vehicle's screen while driving.

You're experiencing paint peeling around the window frame on your white Tacoma. Toyota has acknowledged this is a known issue affecting some white vehicles, but claims your specific vehicle shouldn't be affected based on its VIN number. They've been unable to explain why your car is experiencing the problem despite their records suggesting it shouldn't be.

Your transmission fluid turned black and burnt by 35,000 miles, and you've experienced hard shifts around 55 mph that caused your truck's tires to spin on the highway. A fluid change helped temporarily but didn't fix the underlying problem, which has been getting worse since the vehicle had about 500 miles. Your vehicle isn't triggering a check engine light, so Toyota says there's no defect, but you believe the transmission may be failing and the warning system isn't working properly. The fix would likely involve a complete transmission diagnosis, fluid analysis, and possibly transmission repair or replacement if a defect is confirmed.

Air Bags,seat Belts →1 issue
Your truck was rear-ended at highway speed while stopped in traffic. After the collision, your truck's dashboard displayed warnings indicating seatbelt malfunction and airbag malfunction, and the airbags did not deploy. Both you and your husband sustained injuries from the force of the seatbelts during impact, requiring surgical repair.

Steering,unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your power steering pump was replaced at 33,000 miles, but it's leaking again at 45,500 miles—less than 13,000 miles later. The dealer is quoting $1,100 for a replacement and won't cover paint peeling in three areas. This suggests a possible recurring issue with the power steering system or pump quality.

Engine →1 issue
While driving at 35 mph up a steep hill, your engine misfired and nearly stalled. When you pressed the accelerator, you heard a loud clanging metal-on-metal noise from the engine. Before this happened, you noticed your engine idling roughly and hesitating when accelerating. No warning lights appeared on your dashboard. The issue occurred at approximately 26,000 miles and hasn't been diagnosed or repaired yet. A mechanic will need to inspect the engine for spark plug issues, ignition coil problems, or internal damage causing the misfire and noise.

Engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your engine light came on after cold-weather startup at 36,303 miles, triggered by a fault code indicating an engine control system malfunction. You discovered your engine oil filler cap was completely missing from the engine compartment, which allowed dirt and contamination to enter the engine. The dealership acknowledged this is a known issue with the OEM oil filler caps but disputed responsibility. The fix will involve reinstalling or replacing the oil filler cap and diagnosing any engine damage caused by the contamination.

Lane Departure, forward Collision Avoidance →1 issue
Your truck's forward collision warning and automatic braking system activate unexpectedly when driving through tunnels or underpasses, causing sudden braking. The system sometimes triggers an alarm sound and applies the brakes on its own in these situations. This is likely caused by the camera or radar sensors misinterpreting the tunnel/overpass structure as an obstacle. The fix may involve recalibrating the forward collision sensors, updating the safety system software, or having the camera lens cleaned if it's dirty.
