NHTSA Campaign: 20V008000
Component: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2007-2011 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback, 2001-2004 Infiniti I30 and I35, 2002-2003 Inifiniti QX4, 2003-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 and 2006-2010 M35 and M45 vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated, frontal passenger air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
Risk: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
Fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflators with alternate desiccated inflators, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 888-737-9511 or Infiniti customer service at 888-810-3715.
NHTSA Campaign: 15V287000
Component: AIR BAGS
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2001-2003 Nissan Maxima, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4 and I35, 2003 FX35 and FX45, and 2001 I30 vehicles. Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
Fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on June 15, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: On December 18, 2015 Nissan informed NHTSA of an amendment of this recall to remove 2004-2005 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 vehicles.

Component: STEERING:COLUMN
NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1996-2004 PATHFINDER AND MODEL YEAR 1997-2003 INFINITI QX4 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD, OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON D.C., WEST VIRGINIA AND WISCONSIN. IN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY IN WHICH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT ARE USED, A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAY ENTER AN ASSEMBLY LOCATION HOLE IN THE UPPER STRUT HOUSING, CAUSING WATER TO COLLECT AT THE MATING SURFACE OF THE STRUT HOUSING PANEL AND THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. OVER TIME, THIS SNOW/WATER AND SALT INTRUSION MAY RESULT IN CORROSION OF THE STRUT TOWER HOUSING IN SOME SUBJECT VEHICLES.
Risk: THE STRUT HOUSING MAY CRACK AND PULL AWAY FROM THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. THIS MAY LEAD TO GRINDING NOISES, INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, AND POSSIBLY THE STEERING COLUMN TO BREAK, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Fix: NISSAN WILL INSPECT THE STRUT HOUSING AND REPAIR THE VEHICLES AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM NOTIFICATION LETTER WAS SENT OUT IN MAY 2011. THE SECOND NOTICE WAS MAILED ON JULY 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Owner-Reported Issues (20 of 110)
Fuel/propulsion System →4 issues
Your fuel gauge isn't working correctly and hasn't been for 2 years. When you fill up the tank, the gauge shows full, but it never drops below the halfway mark no matter how much fuel you actually use. This means you have to track your mileage manually and refuel every 225 miles to avoid running out of gas. The fix will likely involve replacing the fuel gauge sender unit in your fuel tank, which is responsible for sending accurate fuel level readings to your dashboard.

Your fuel gauge showed the tank was at least half full, but your vehicle wouldn't start because it had actually run out of fuel. This caused unnecessary repairs costing nearly $1,000 before the real problem was discovered. The fuel gauge is giving inaccurate readings, which could be dangerous if you run out of fuel unexpectedly while driving on a highway. Fixing this likely requires replacing the entire instrument cluster.

Your fuel gauge isn't reading the fuel level correctly, causing you to unexpectedly run out of gas. This has already cost you money in towing fees and has forced you to top off your tank more frequently than necessary. The fix will likely involve replacing or recalibrating the fuel gauge sender unit or the gauge cluster itself.

Your gas gauge has stopped working, even though the fuel sensor is fine. Your mechanic believes the gauge itself is the problem. This appears to be a widespread issue affecting many 2003 Pathfinders. Fixing this will likely require replacing the fuel gauge cluster or instrument panel.

Steering,suspension →4 issues
When you drive your Pathfinder faster than 50 mph, the vehicle begins to wobble noticeably, which stops when you ease off the accelerator. You've been told this is caused by worn trailing arm bushings and rear arm bearings that need replacement—a condition some owners call "death wobble." This is a significant safety concern, especially at highway speeds. The fix will involve inspecting and replacing the worn suspension bushings and bearings.

Your 2003 Nissan Pathfinder had a steering and suspension recall repair performed on the driver's side of the frame by the previous owner. You've now discovered the same failure is occurring on the passenger side of the frame, and Nissan confirmed this problem. The fix will likely involve having a dealership inspect and repair the affected suspension components on the passenger side.

Your 2003 Nissan Pathfinder's passenger-side front struts have developed corrosion. Your dealer refused to repair this under a manufacturer recall campaign because your vehicle exceeded the mileage limit for coverage (you had 187,000 miles). The driver's side struts were previously repaired. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the corroded front struts on the passenger side.

When driving over bumps at any speed, your Pathfinder makes an abnormal noise from the suspension. An independent mechanic found that the struts are rusted and need replacement. The Nissan dealer couldn't diagnose or repair the issue and said your vehicle wasn't covered under a related recall.

Air Bags →3 issues
Your airbag warning light on the dashboard keeps flashing on and off, even after being reset. The light returns within a few hours of driving. This indicates a problem with your airbag system that needs to be diagnosed and repaired by a technician, as the system may not deploy properly in a crash.

Your vehicle was subject to a Takata airbag safety recall, and you were instructed by your Nissan dealership to bring it in for repair. You took your truck to the dealer in December 2017 and the repair was completed after a 9-hour wait. The repair involved replacing or servicing the defective airbag system.

You received a recall notice about your airbags, but the dealer told you your vehicle's VIN wasn't included in the recall. You're concerned about whether your car should actually be covered. The dealer and manufacturer have been notified of your request to investigate this discrepancy.

Engine →2 issues
While driving your Pathfinder on a salted winter road, salt corrosion damaged the main water flow component, causing the engine to stall and the radiator thermostat to fail. Your car then overheated as a result. The repair will likely involve replacing the corroded water inlet and radiator thermostat, and flushing the cooling system.

Your mufflers have rusted through completely. The rear muffler and tail pipe fell off while you were backing up, and you're also experiencing a fluid leak from the front passenger area running toward the back of the vehicle. The vehicle hasn't been diagnosed or repaired yet. This will likely require replacement of the muffler, tail pipe, and diagnosis of the fluid leak source.

Air Bags, unknown Or Other →1 issue
You received multiple recall notices for an airbag problem on your 2003 Pathfinder. When you visited the dealership in late November 2018, they said parts weren't available or a mechanic wasn't available. After receiving another postcard saying parts were in stock, you returned on December 23rd only to be told again that no mechanic was available. You're frustrated with the repeated failed attempts to complete the recall repair.

Suspension →1 issue
When driving over 45 mph and hitting a bump or pothole, your vehicle suddenly develops an extreme wobble that makes it very hard to control, potentially forcing you into adjacent lanes. Slowing down stops the wobble. Mechanics have warned that this condition could cause the vehicle to flip on the highway. The problem appears to be failed bushings in the rear control arms, and repairs can be costly and are sometimes misdiagnosed.

Suspension,structure,service Brakes →1 issue
After hitting a pothole, you heard a loud bang and immediately lost all braking ability. Upon inspection, you discovered the right front strut housing had separated from the frame, which severed the brake line on that side. This appears to be caused by the same corrosion issue that was previously recalled on the left front strut housing. The repair will likely involve replacing the corroded strut housing and the damaged brake line to restore braking function.

Unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your 2003 Pathfinder no longer meets current EPA emissions standards required for road use. You believe the vehicle poses a health risk due to its exhaust emissions and are requesting a complete vehicle recall. Addressing this would likely require a comprehensive emissions system overhaul or retirement of the vehicle.

Structure →1 issue
You took your 2003 Pathfinder to a Nissan dealership years ago for recall #11V244000, but the dealership never completed the repair, claiming they were too busy. When you contacted Nissan recently, they said the recall had already been fixed on your vehicle. However, your car is still showing the exact problems described in the recall, which means the repair was never actually done. You need Nissan to perform the recall repair that was originally supposed to address this structural issue.
