NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1996-2004 PATHFINDER AND MODEL YEAR 1997-2003 INFINITI QX4 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD, OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON D.C., WEST VIRGINIA AND WISCONSIN. IN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY IN WHICH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT ARE USED, A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAY ENTER AN ASSEMBLY LOCATION HOLE IN THE UPPER STRUT HOUSING, CAUSING WATER TO COLLECT AT THE MATING SURFACE OF THE STRUT HOUSING PANEL AND THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. OVER TIME, THIS SNOW/WATER AND SALT INTRUSION MAY RESULT IN CORROSION OF THE STRUT TOWER HOUSING IN SOME SUBJECT VEHICLES.

Risk: THE STRUT HOUSING MAY CRACK AND PULL AWAY FROM THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. THIS MAY LEAD TO GRINDING NOISES, INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, AND POSSIBLY THE STEERING COLUMN TO BREAK, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.

Fix: NISSAN WILL INSPECT THE STRUT HOUSING AND REPAIR THE VEHICLES AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM NOTIFICATION LETTER WAS SENT OUT IN MAY 2011. THE SECOND NOTICE WAS MAILED ON JULY 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Component: STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE:HINGE AND ATTACHMENTS

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. SOME OF THE BRACKETS USED TO ATTACH THE TWO GAS STRUTS TO THE REAR DOOR (HATCH) MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY MADE. AT HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES, THE INCREASE IN GAS PRESSURE IN THE STRUT(S) COULD CAUSE ONE OR BOTH BRACKETS TO BEND, RESULTING IN THE STRUTS DETACHING FROM THE BRACKET(S) WHEN OPENING OR CLOSING THE REAR DOOR.

Risk: IF BOTH STRUTS DETACH FROM THE BRACKETS, THE DOOR WILL RAPIDLY FALL DOWN, POSSIBLY STRIKING SOMEONE AND CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STRUT BRACKETS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN SEPTEMBER 24, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP

ON CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, TENNESSEE, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA , WISCONSIN AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, DURING THE COATING PROCESS OF THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY, AN INSUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF COATING MAY HAVE BEEN APPLIED AT THE LOWER MOUNTING BRACKET. THIS COULD RESULT IN AN OPENING IN THE COATING WHICH CAN ALLOW WATER TO ENTER AND MAKE CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL OF THE TUBE.

Risk: THIS MAY RESULT IN SURFACE RUST BUT NOT PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. HOWEVER, IN THOSE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY WHICH USE HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT IN THE WINTER, IF A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAKES CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL, CORROSION MAY OCCUR TO A DEGREE WHICH RESULTS IN PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. IN THIS CASE FUEL LEAKAGE MAY OCCUR WHEN FILLING THE TANK. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY WITH A NEW ONE WITH AN IMPROVED COATING PROCESS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 26, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Your brakes failed while driving at 35 MPH, forcing you to press the brake pedal all the way to the floor to stop the vehicle. Your ABS warning light had been on for a long time before this happened. A mechanic found that rust had damaged your front suspension, struts, brake pads, and rotors, all of which need replacement to restore proper braking and steering function.

The sub-frame (cradle) on the passenger side of your Pathfinder has rusted severely and won't pass state inspection. Your mechanic discovered this rust while replacing your front rotors and brakes. Since the control arms that manage steering are mounted to this sub-frame, rust damage could affect your ability to steer safely. Fixing this requires replacing the entire sub-frame assembly and bolts.

While stopped at a red light waiting to turn right, your steering wheel spun freely with no resistance, making the vehicle impossible to steer. The vehicle had to be towed, and inspection found the steering column shaft was snapped in half and the driver's side front strut tower had torn away from the truck's body. The vehicle had previous recalls that were apparently not properly fixed.

You noticed rust and corrosion in the front passenger wheel well area of your Pathfinder, and discovered a large crack in the strut tower itself. The crack appears to be in the same area that was previously repaired under a Nissan recall, suggesting the earlier repair didn't hold. A cracked strut tower can compromise the structural integrity of your vehicle and suspension performance. The fix will likely require professional welding or replacement of the strut tower assembly.

Filed: Aug 2020

While driving your Pathfinder shortly after starting, you heard a loud pop from the engine area and your steering suddenly became hard and difficult to turn, with a grinding noise when turning the wheel. After pulling over and checking under the hood, you discovered that the strut tower on the driver's side had separated from its factory weld. A complete strut assembly replacement and inspection of the suspension welds will likely be needed to restore safe steering function.

Electrical System1 issue
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Filed: Jan 2020

Your engine suddenly stalled while driving at highway speed and smelled like something was burning. Months later, when you tried to restart the vehicle, you discovered smoke coming from the engine computer (ECU) with a burned-out fuse and a burned chip inside. The root cause appears to be water entering the idle air control valve motor, which overloads the ECU's electrical circuit when the computer tries to compensate for the valve's failure. Fixing this will likely require replacing the idle air control valve, the ECU, and possibly associated wiring or relays.

Filed: Oct 2018

While driving, you heard a loud popping sound from the driver's side front, and the bottom of the strut tower cracked. Now when you turn the steering wheel, you hear a moaning noise from the strut tower bearing, which has shifted out of alignment. The strut tower and bearing will likely need to be replaced or repaired to restore normal steering and suspension operation.

Fuel System, Gasoline1 issue
highFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
Filed: Jul 2018

Your fuel filler neck (the opening where you add gas) has corroded and is leaking fuel due to road salt exposure. Nissan issued a recall for this problem on certain 2001 Pathfinders, but the manufacturer says your VIN falls outside the recall range even though you believe it should be included. The fix would likely involve replacing the corroded fuel filler neck with a new one.
