Component: TRAILER HITCHES

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Sportage Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) and 2024-2025 Sportage vehicles equipped with a 4.2" screen and a Genuine Kia tow hitch harness accessory. Due to a software error, the instrument panel screen may fail. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 101, "Controls and Displays."

Risk: An instrument panel screen that fails to display critical safety information, such as the speedometer or warning lights, can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the tow hitch harness control module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 13, 2026. Owners may contact Kia Customer Service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC359. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning December 31, 2025.

Your sunroof unexpectedly shattered with a loud bang while you were driving, with no apparent external cause. You didn't notice the damage until a week later when you heard wind noise coming from the roof. The dealership referred you to a body shop, which quoted $8,700 for repairs, and you discovered online that other owners have reported similar sunroof issues. The repair will likely involve complete sunroof panel replacement and resealing.

Your windshield develops layers of frost in very cold weather. More concerning, your front passenger window shattered and exploded into pieces while you were rolling it up in cold weather, though it remained in the frame. This suggests the cold may be causing stress on the glass that leads to failure.

Your panoramic sunroof suddenly imploded while you were driving on the highway at normal speeds, with no impact or collision involved. The sunroof had been stuck partially open for about a month before it failed. Kia has refused to cover the repair under warranty.

Your driver's side window rattles at all speeds while driving. The rattle stops when you partially open the window. While not an immediate safety concern, if the window breaks due to the rattling or falls down completely, it could become a safety issue.

Lane Departure,back Over Prevention2 issues
highLANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
Filed: Oct 2025

Your Lane Assist and Blind Spot Detection system failed to warn you before another vehicle hit your car while changing lanes. The system has malfunctioned multiple times since the accident, and Kia pushed two over-the-air software updates to your vehicle within two weeks without notifying you first, making it difficult to diagnose the original problem. You're concerned that Kia may use these updates as a reason to deny warranty coverage for the damage caused by the detection system failure. Resolving this issue will likely require a full diagnostic inspection and possibly replacement or recalibration of the lane departure and blind spot detection sensors.

Your car's lane departure warning system suddenly sounded an alarm while you were driving, and you suspect it may be related to a door issue. You're concerned about the safety of this unexpected alarm and want to know when Kia can repair it. The fix will likely involve diagnosing the door sensor or lane departure warning system components to identify why the alarm activated.

Engine And Engine Cooling1 issue
criticalENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Filed: Mar 2026

Your 2025 Kia Sportage produces an abnormal burning or chemical smell while driving that has caused you and your passengers to experience nasal irritation, eye irritation, headaches, and dizziness severe enough to require medical attention. The smell persists even with ventilation, no warning lights appear on the dashboard, and the issue hasn't been diagnosed or repaired despite contacting the manufacturer. Diagnosing this issue will likely require a dealer inspection to identify the source of the odor, which could involve checking cooling system components, cabin air quality systems, or engine bay components.

CrashFiled: Dec 2025

While slowly pulling into your driveway to park, your vehicle suddenly revved its engine loudly and accelerated forward on its own, crashing into a tree. The steering wheel airbag deployed from the impact. The front end of your vehicle was severely damaged, and the tree lost large branches. This could have been life-threatening if it had happened in traffic or near people. The issue may involve the cruise control or collision avoidance system malfunctioning and causing unintended acceleration.

Filed: Dec 2025

Your car has repeatedly warned you to keep your hands on the wheel (84 times since March) even when your hands were properly positioned. Your emergency braking system has engaged 12 times with false collision alerts when there was no actual danger, causing the vehicle to brake hard without warning. On three separate occasions, your car has been stuck in Drive but wouldn't move forward, only revving the engine. Most recently, your vehicle shut off completely while you were slowly driving into your garage. These issues may require diagnostic testing of the driver assistance systems, brake controls, transmission, and engine sensors.

CrashFiled: Nov 2025

After a severe two-car crash that damaged both the front and rear of your vehicle, the airbags deployed only on the passenger side instead of both sides. Additionally, the steering wheel completely detached and fell toward the driver's footwell. This raises serious questions about the airbag and steering system's safety performance during the collision.

Your rear-view camera stopped working without any warning lights appearing on your dashboard. The dealer found that both your radio and camera had failed, and even after repair, the problem came back. The manufacturer has opened a case but denied your request for a vehicle buyback. The fix will likely involve replacing or reprogramming the camera system and radio components.

Service Brakes1 issue
highSERVICE BRAKES
Filed: Mar 2026

Your brake rotors have needed service three times in less than a year—they were resurfaced in October, replaced with new ones in January, and warped again by March requiring resurfacing. You report not riding your brakes and have never experienced this issue with previous new vehicles. The fix will likely involve replacing the rotors again and investigating whether there's an underlying problem with the brake system or caliper that's causing premature rotor wear and warping.

Filed: Feb 2026

Your dashboard display goes black intermittently, causing all lights and controls to stop working. The air conditioning also turns on and off by itself, and your backup camera doesn't function. You've visited the dealership four times since purchasing the truck, and this problem has persisted. You've also had to replace the battery three times in four months. The fix will likely require the dealership to diagnose and repair the electrical system that's controlling the dashboard, lighting, and climate controls.

Your 2025 Kia Sportage's touchscreen display freezes and becomes unresponsive, and Apple CarPlay fails to work properly, causing phone calls to drop or sound distorted. Your vehicle is subject to an open safety recall (SC359B) that was already issued before you took delivery, but the dealer told you there were no recalls and refused to address the issue. The recall currently has no available remedy from Kia.

NHTSA #: 11714621
Forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
highFORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Filed: Jan 2026

Your car's automatic emergency braking system is engaging too aggressively and at inappropriate times. On the highway, it slammed on the brakes when traffic was slowing down, and while backing out of your driveway, it detected a car at a nearby stop sign on the opposite side of the road and braked hard enough to throw items around your car—creating a safety hazard with other drivers. The system applies brakes harshly without gradual easing, which could cause other vehicles to rear-end you or lead to dangerous situations like almost being T-boned. The fix will likely involve recalibrating or updating the forward collision warning and automatic braking sensor settings or software.

Filed: Dec 2025

Your 2025 Sportage is having trouble starting the engine and shifts gears roughly while driving — the engine revs up but the transmission doesn't engage properly, and you've noticed the Auto START/STOP light is orange. You're concerned about potential transmission failure, especially after hearing about similar issues from others. The dealer needs to diagnose what's causing the starting difficulty and transmission shifting problem, which may involve checking the electrical system, transmission fluid, and transmission control sensors.

Your instrument cluster screen occasionally goes blank for about 5 seconds and displays a "System Check" message while you're driving, regardless of speed or weather conditions. When this happens, your cruise control disengages and your vehicle slows down, requiring you to manually speed back up. This occurs unpredictably, sometimes 6-15 days apart, and the dealer has not yet resolved the issue despite previous service.

Your navigation screen is blinking and going completely black, especially when it's 60°F or warmer outside. The screen eventually comes back on, but the problem keeps happening off and on. This appears to be temperature-related, and while you've found reports of similar issues online, your dealership says there's no recall and it's not covered under warranty. The fix will likely involve inspecting the display unit's electrical connections or replacing the infotainment system.
