NHTSA Campaign: 21V137000

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2017-2021 Sportage and Cadenza vehicles. The electrical circuit in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may short-circuit, which can cause a fire in the engine compartment.

Risk: An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures as a precaution until the recall repair is complete. Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace certain fuses in the electrical junction box. Vehicles equipped with an electronic parking brake (EPB) will also receive a HECU software update. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on April 30, 2021. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC206.

Component: TRAILER HITCHES

Kia America, Inc. (Kia) is recalling certain 2016-2022 Sorento, 2021-2022 Sorento Hybrid (HEV), 2022-2023 Sorento Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV), and 2017-2022 Sportage vehicles equipped with a tow hitch harness installed as original equipment, or purchased as an accessory through a Kia dealership. Debris and moisture accumulation on the tow hitch harness module printed circuit board (PCB) may cause an electrical short, which can result in a fire.

Risk: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.

Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will inspect the vehicle, and, as necessary, replace the fuse and/or tow hitch harness module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2023. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC249.

Your 2021 Kia Sportage with the 2.4L engine is burning through oil much faster than normal — you've had to add oil every 2 weeks between oil changes since around 80,000 miles to keep it from running dangerously low. This rapid oil loss can cause your engine to stall while driving or fail completely, and your engine now needs a full replacement. The fix will require replacing the engine entirely, which is an expensive repair that may be covered under warranty investigation.

Your engine shut down while driving after the check engine light and oil warning light came on. When the car was inspected, mechanics found two pieces of the engine block broken off and sitting in the cradle cover, indicating severe internal engine damage. This will likely require engine replacement or major internal repairs.

Your car's knock sensor and camshaft position sensor are showing fault codes that could indicate a timing chain problem. While driving on the highway, your car suddenly wouldn't accelerate past 40 mph and your check engine light started flashing, creating a dangerous situation with traffic behind you. The dealership couldn't repair it with their current tools and had to tow your car to a Kia dealership for timing component repair or replacement.

Your engine is producing smoke. This could indicate an internal issue that needs immediate attention, such as an oil leak, coolant issue, or burning components. We recommend having a mechanic inspect the engine as soon as possible to diagnose the source.

Your engine is burning through oil rapidly — within 1,500 miles of each oil change, your dipstick shows the oil level is completely dry, even though there are no visible leaks underneath your car and no warning light appears on your dashboard. This has happened consistently over your last three oil changes. You've been adding oil manually to prevent engine damage, but you're concerned the engine is burning oil prematurely. The dealer will need to diagnose why oil is disappearing without leaking and repair the underlying cause, which could involve internal engine components like piston rings or valve seals.

Your engine is consuming oil much faster than normal. Even after an oil change at 10,000 miles, the oil level drops significantly by 3,000 miles, despite no visible leaks and regular maintenance. You've noticed other owners reporting the same problem and are aware of potential recalls on newer Sportage models. The fix may involve diagnosing internal engine wear, checking piston rings or valve seals, or determining if a manufacturer recall applies to your vehicle.

Your car is consuming oil at an unusually high rate—you've needed to add 2 quarts in just one week. The dealership ran a test and suspects the pistons may be worn, but instead of fixing the problem immediately, they want you to drive another 1,000 miles before checking again. Until they perform the actual repair, you'll need to monitor your oil level daily to prevent engine damage.

This could be a safety hazard since loose parts flying off your car could hit other vehicles. The trim will need to be reattached or replaced to prevent it from happening again.

Your brakes suddenly stopped working while driving, and your vehicle lost power and rolled to a stop. You noticed smoke coming from under the hood, and the vehicle caught fire. This happened even though your vehicle was subject to a recall for trailer hitch issues, but the manufacturer hadn't yet provided the repair parts. The fire department extinguished the fire, and no one was injured. The dealer confirmed that replacement parts still weren't available.

Your 2021 Kia Sportage is consuming oil faster than normal — you had to add a quart between oil changes at 41,000 miles. Your car didn't show any warning light to alert you to the low oil level. You may want to check your oil level more frequently and have a dealer diagnose whether this is a known issue with your engine.

Your 2021 Kia Sportage was stolen shortly after purchase and later recovered by insurance. When the repair shop inspected the engine, they discovered a blockage that the insurance adjuster believes may be a manufacturer defect rather than theft-related damage. Your insurance claim was initially denied based on this finding, though the engine only had 27,000 miles at the time of discovery. The repair will likely involve diagnosing and clearing the engine blockage to restore normal operation.
