2020 Kia Sedona — Known Issues & Recalls
Complaints from Jan 2026 to Nov 2025
The most reported issue is unknown or other problems (3 complaints).
Open Safety Recalls (1)
NHTSA Campaign: 20V399000
Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR/REGULATOR
Kia Motors America (KIA) is recalling certain 2020 Sedona vehicles. The battery positive (B+) terminal nut on the alternator may not have been tightened properly during assembly, possibly causing it to loosen over time.
Risk: If the alternator B+ terminal nut loosens, electrical arcing may result, increasing the risk of a fire.
Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the alternator B+ terminal nut, tightening it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began August 14, 2020. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC192.

Your car's engine shut down unexpectedly while you were driving on the highway with your family. After the shutdown, your car's anti-theft system (immobilizer) prevented the engine from restarting, even though your key fob was in the car with you. This appears to be caused by a communication failure between the car's computer (ECU) and your key fob. Fixing this will likely require the dealer to diagnose the ECU and key fob system, and may involve reprogramming the fob or replacing the ECU or receiver module.

After your Kia dealership replaced your high-pressure fuel pump under warranty, your battery went dead and your AC stopped working with a stuck control knob. The dealership is charging you $1,500 to fix the AC issue and says you're responsible for the cost, even though the problem didn't exist before their service. You're concerned they may have simply disconnected something during the repair that just needs to be reconnected, and you're worried about your safety and your children's safety in hot Oklahoma summers without AC. Fixing this may involve diagnosing the AC system, checking electrical connections made during the fuel pump replacement, and potentially replacing the AC compressor or related components.

You owned your 2020 Kia Sedona since November 2019 but were never notified about an open recall until you discovered it yourself in April 2024 by checking your insurance company's website. You're concerned that relying solely on mail notifications is unreliable, especially if owners move or change addresses, and you suggest that insurance companies or lienholders should also notify owners about recalls. The fix will require getting the recall service completed at an authorized Kia dealership once you're properly notified.

Structure →3 issues
Your sliding door won't stay in place on an incline—it either slams shut or swings open on its own depending on the angle. The door doesn't have enough friction or locking force to hold itself steady when the vehicle is parked on a slope. A mechanic will likely need to inspect and adjust the door's latch mechanism, hinges, or hydraulic dampers to restore proper holding force.

Your sliding door tries to open beyond its normal fully open position, causing it to jam. When this happens, you hear clicking sounds followed by a beeping noise from the door mechanism.

Your vehicle's pearl white paint is peeling, flaking, and bubbling in multiple locations, including on the roof behind the sunroof and along the liftgate edge. This appears to be a paint adhesion or clear coat failure issue. The fix would likely involve sanding and repainting the affected areas or a full paint job depending on the extent of the damage.

Engine →2 issues
Your car suddenly loses power while driving on highways, dropping from 70 mph to 10 mph, and the check engine light comes on. The accelerator pedal fails to respond, leaving the vehicle barely able to accelerate. This issue has occurred three times over five years, and while Kia replaced the part under warranty twice, they're now refusing coverage and quoting $5,000 for repairs, leaving your vehicle unsafe and unusable.

Your 2020 Kia Sedona is having trouble starting in hot weather. When temperatures are high, the engine won't turn over right away and requires multiple attempts to start, though it eventually does and runs normally afterward. This has become a regular problem during summer months. The issue started around 22,000 miles and hasn't been inspected by a dealer or mechanic yet. Getting the vehicle diagnosed at a dealership to check the starter motor, battery, and ignition system would be the next step.

Electrical System →2 issues
While driving on the interstate at 70 mph, your car suddenly applied the brakes on its own and triggered both the forward collision warning and check engine lights. The vehicle shut down multiple times, and after disabling all electrical accessories, you barely made it to an exit. A Kia dealership found that the wiring harness had been chewed up in several places, causing multiple electrical short circuits and warning codes. Repairing the damaged wiring harness and addressing the resulting electrical faults will be needed to restore normal operation.

Your vehicle lost engine power while driving, with warning lights appearing on the dashboard. The dealer diagnosed a battery failure and recommended replacement, but when they test-drove the vehicle after diagnosis, the same problem happened again. This occurred around 77,000 miles. The fix will likely involve replacing the battery and investigating why a new battery isn't solving the power loss issue.

Structure,wheels →1 issue
While driving at 30 mph, your steering wheel started shaking severely and became hard to control. You discovered your tires had tread separation (where the rubber was peeling apart), your wheels were bent, and your sliding doors wouldn't open properly. A mechanic determined the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The tires and wheels were replaced and repaired, but the sliding door issue was not fixed. A mechanic can inspect and replace damaged tires, straighten or replace bent wheels, and diagnose the sliding door mechanism.

Power Train,engine →1 issue
Your van is consuming oil rapidly and has experienced multiple engine failures. After a dealership engine replacement, the check engine light returned within 24 hours, and the vehicle has stranded you twice in three days due to the same four oxygen and air intake sensors showing fault codes. The dealership may not have properly replaced or cleaned these sensors during the engine swap, despite the underlying oil consumption issue that damaged the original engine.

Fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your 2020 Kia Sedona's high pressure fuel pump may have a defect where the fuel control valve plunger wears unevenly and gets stuck in the open position. This could cause your engine to stall unexpectedly, especially at highway speeds or in heavy traffic, which could lead to loss of vehicle control. Kia extended the warranty on this part rather than issuing a recall. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the fuel pump assembly or the valve plunger component.

Exterior Lighting,service Brakes →1 issue
Your rear brake lights aren't working properly, and police notified you of the issue. When you pressed the brake pedal while driving at about 20 mph, the pedal sank all the way to the floor. Your vehicle was towed to the dealer, but the exact cause hasn't been identified yet. The dealer will need to diagnose and repair the brake system, which may involve replacing brake fluid, brake lines, or the brake master cylinder.

Power Train →1 issue
Your Sedona's engine is consuming oil abnormally — the oil pressure warning light came on and the engine stalled between oil changes, requiring you to add 4.5 quarts. The dealership performed an oil consumption test, but says the repair isn't covered under warranty because your V6 engine model isn't on Kia's list of affected vehicles, even though it has the GDI engine type that is listed. You're caught between the manufacturer's 100,000-mile warranty (which your vehicle has now exceeded) and the 200,000-mile powertrain warranty (which the dealership says doesn't apply to your situation). Fixing this will likely involve engine diagnostics, possible piston ring or valve seal replacement, or an engine overhaul depending on the test results.

Electrical System,exterior Lighting,engine →1 issue
Your 2020 Kia Sedona experienced multiple electrical and mechanical issues starting around 79,000 miles: the check engine light came on while driving, both headlights and taillights stopped working, the driver's side window got stuck in the down position, and your oil level was low. After repairs at both a mechanic and dealer (including replacing the O2 sensor, transaxle boot, headlights, and taillights), the headlight problem came back with water found inside the headlight housing. The dealer said there's no warranty coverage, and the manufacturer didn't provide additional help. Fixing this will likely require replacing the headlight assemblies, sealing any water leaks, addressing the electrical system connections, and possibly diagnosing why the check engine light triggered.

Tires →1 issue
Your tires have failed prematurely twice in less than a year. The first tire fell apart during a road trip just days after service at a Kia dealership (at 5,711 miles), and a second tire failed about 6 months later (at 11,765 miles). Both tires required replacement, suggesting a potential defect with the tire brand or installation.

Seats →1 issue
Your third row seats often fail to latch properly — usually one side locks while the other doesn't, and then gets stuck in that position. This has been happening since you purchased the vehicle new at 3,600 miles. The issue typically requires inspection and adjustment or replacement of the seat latch mechanism on the affected side.

Engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your check engine light came on suddenly, and you noticed a strong smell of exhaust or gas coming from the vehicle. When you took it to the dealership, they identified two issues: a faulty oxygen sensor (O2 sensor) on bank 2 and a leaking exhaust gasket at the header. Fixing this will likely involve replacing the oxygen sensor and resealing or replacing the exhaust gasket.
