May 2022

NHTSA Campaign: 22V304000

Component: STEERING:COLUMN

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Rio and Forte vehicles. A bolt in the steering column may not be secured properly, which can cause the steering column to detach from the steering rack and result in a loss of steering control.

Risk: Loss of steering control can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will tighten the lower steering column u-joint retention bolt, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 27, 2022. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall SC235.

Filed: Apr 2025

Your check engine light has been turning on and off for about 3 months, even though you maintain your car regularly with oil changes and checkups. Your mechanic suggested you might need a new transmission. You're concerned this may indicate a defect or recall issue with your 2022 Kia Forte GT.

NHTSA #: 11653093

Filed: Apr 2025

Your 2022 Kia Forte's engine oil contained metal particles at 76,000 miles, which a shop refused to service due to suspected internal engine damage. The dealership proposed a $500 engine flush and advised driving the car until engine seizure, which concerned you since metal in the oil typically signals serious internal wear or defects. You believe this may be a manufacturing defect covered under your 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty rather than normal wear, especially since you followed Kia's recommended maintenance schedule. Addressing this issue will likely require either an engine flush to remove contaminants, engine diagnostics to pinpoint the metal source, or in worst-case scenarios, a full engine replacement if internal damage is confirmed.

NHTSA #: 11652165

Filed: Jul 2023

Your car hesitates when accelerating from a stop, then suddenly accelerates unexpectedly. The check engine light comes on, but turns off before you can get to the dealership for diagnosis, making it difficult for them to identify the problem. This on-and-off pattern suggests an intermittent engine issue that needs proper diagnostic scanning to pinpoint.

Engine And Engine Cooling2 issues
criticalENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Filed: Feb 2024

Your oil pressure warning light came on after restarting your car, and you noticed a puddle of oil underneath it. While driving at 35–40 MPH, your engine lost power and shut down completely. The dealer discovered that your oil drain plug was missing, which caused the oil to leak out and damage your engine. The dealer said you need a new battery and engine, though the repair wasn't completed.

NHTSA #: 11572089
criticalENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Filed: May 2022

While driving at 65 MPH, your engine suddenly revved on its own and then stalled after your battery and engine temperature warning lights came on. The dealer found that a faulty engine pulley bolt caused the engine to overheat and become damaged. The repair will likely involve replacing the entire engine.

NHTSA #: 11464989
Seat Belts,unknown Or Other1 issue
criticalSEAT BELTS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Mar 2026

Your driver's side front door is opening unexpectedly while you're driving, and your seatbelt is randomly releasing itself during driving. Both issues pose serious safety risks and need immediate attention. The fix will likely involve inspecting and adjusting the door latch mechanism and seatbelt retractor assembly.

NHTSA #: 11727407
Steering,suspension,unknown Or Other1 issue
criticalSTEERING,SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Dec 2025

Your steering wheel tension feels inconsistent — it will suddenly loosen briefly then tighten back up, especially at highway speeds and in wind, forcing you to make constant small corrections to keep the car straight. Your car also won't stay in alignment, losing it again within a few hundred miles even after multiple alignment services. The dealership has replaced your steering column and housing and reprogrammed the system, but the problem persists. This issue may require a deeper diagnostic of the power steering system and suspension alignment components to identify the root cause.

NHTSA #: 11707638
Steering,suspension1 issue
criticalSTEERING,SUSPENSION
Filed: Dec 2025

Your 2022 Kia Forte's front passenger-side lower control arm fractured completely while driving normally, with no collision or impact involved. The break caused your suspension to misalign, damaged the CV axle, and created uneven tire wear, which made the vehicle harder to control safely. Kia denied the warranty claim and blamed external forces, but provided no physical evidence or documentation to support that claim. The dealer may need to replace the fractured control arm and inspect or repair the CV axle and suspension alignment.

NHTSA #: 11704868
Steering1 issue

CrashFiled: Oct 2024

Your steering wheel may have been unresponsive or acting unpredictably, which caused you to lose control and crash into a curb and rocks, resulting in injuries and total loss of the vehicle. You had recently had steering work done under a recall, but you're concerned the repair may not have been completed properly. The issue likely involves inspecting the steering system components to ensure the recall repair was done correctly.

NHTSA #: 11622041
Vehicle Speed Control,service Brakes,forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
criticalVEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Filed: May 2024

Your car's cruise control, brakes, and forward collision warning system may not be functioning properly. You experienced a significant accident that may have damaged these safety systems.

Tires1 issue
criticalTIRES
FireFiled: May 2024

Your car experienced a fire incident that occurred on a bridge on NW 7th Street. The fire was associated with the tire component, though the specific cause or circumstances are not detailed in this report.

NHTSA #: 11590244
Air Bags1 issue
criticalAIR BAGS
CrashFiled: Dec 2023

Your car was in a front/side impact crash after sliding on ice and hitting a tree, but the airbags did not deploy. No sensors or warning lights activated before or during the crash. The vehicle is currently being evaluated by the service center and insurance company to determine why the safety system failed.

NHTSA #: 11558478
Electrical System,air Bags,forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
criticalELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
CrashFiled: Oct 2023

Your airbags may not have deployed during a crash when they should have, suggesting a potential failure or malfunction in the airbag system or sensors. No warning lights appeared before the incident, and the problem hasn't been confirmed by a professional yet. A complete electrical and airbag system inspection is needed to identify what went wrong.

NHTSA #: 11549105
Power Train,visibility/wiper1 issue
criticalPOWER TRAIN,VISIBILITY/WIPER
Filed: Sep 2023

Your car is stalling and losing power during acceleration, and your wipers occasionally get stuck in the upright position during rain, blocking your view of the road. You've taken your car to the dealership three times for transmission problems—the first two visits didn't fix the issue, and even after a complete transmission replacement in September 2023, the new transmission overheated and shut down while you were driving in traffic, leaving you stranded in a dangerous situation. The transmission may need to be diagnosed again or replaced with a properly functioning unit, and the wiper system may need motor or linkage repair.

NHTSA #: 11543508
Service Brakes,back Over Prevention,forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
criticalSERVICE BRAKES,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Filed: Oct 2022

Your car's automatic braking system is engaging unexpectedly multiple times, even when there's no vehicle nearby or when another car is far away across the street. The system beeps and slams on the brakes while you're driving in traffic, which has nearly caused accidents. This safety feature is currently making your car less safe rather than more safe. The fix will likely involve diagnosing and recalibrating the forward collision avoidance and backup sensors, or updating the system software.

NHTSA #: 11488159
Exterior Lighting,visibility/wiper1 issue
highEXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
Filed: Jan 2026

Your 2022 Kia Forte's factory halogen headlights don't provide enough light for safe nighttime driving on unlit roads, especially at highway speeds. You may not be able to spot road hazards, pedestrians, or signs in time to react safely, and the high beams only offer minimal improvement. A dealer or mechanic can assess whether upgrading to brighter aftermarket headlights or LED bulbs would help improve visibility.

NHTSA #: 11708975
Power Train1 issue
highPOWER TRAIN
Filed: Sep 2025

Your 2022 Kia Forte's transmission is slipping and failing to respond properly. When you shift into reverse or try to accelerate, the car may not shift into the intended gear, causing jerking and illuminating the check engine warning light. Even after the dealer replaced the dual clutch and reprogrammed the transmission control module, the problem persisted. The transmission likely needs further diagnosis or replacement to restore proper shifting and vehicle control.

NHTSA #: 11687426
Unknown Or Other1 issue
highUNKNOWN OR OTHER
Filed: Nov 2023

Your car's ignition system allowed you to remove the key while the vehicle was in Drive and the engine was off, which caused the car to roll. Normally, the ignition should prevent key removal when the transmission is in gear to prevent accidental rolling. This is a safety concern that should be inspected by a dealer to check the ignition lock mechanism and transmission interlock system.

NHTSA #: 11554506
Suspension,seat Belts,forward Collision Avoidance1 issue
highSUSPENSION,SEAT BELTS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
Filed: Jul 2023

Your car's forward collision avoidance system keeps shutting down and won't stay on, and you're experiencing instability and a very bumpy ride that makes you uncomfortable driving. You feel you have little control over the vehicle, especially on rough roads. The issue likely involves the suspension system, seat belt sensors, and forward collision warning system working together, and may require diagnostic testing and potential repairs to the suspension components and safety system sensors.

NHTSA #: 11534928
Fuel System, Gasoline,engine1 issue
highFUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ENGINE
Filed: Apr 2023

Your engine is shutting down unexpectedly at low speeds (5-10 MPH), forcing you to restart it while driving. This has happened multiple times, including once while approaching a traffic light, and your dashboard displays a message telling you to restart the vehicle. The dealer wasn't able to reproduce the problem during testing, so they couldn't identify or fix the issue. The manufacturer opened a case but hasn't provided a solution, and this may be related to a known fuel system defect.

NHTSA #: 11517860
