Open Safety Recalls (2)
NHTSA Campaign: 21V164000
Component: AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2021 Telluride, K5, and Forte vehicles. The Occupant Classification and Detection System (OCS/ODS) unit may not detect the presence of a child restraint system in the front passenger seat. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Risk: In the event of a crash, deployment of the front passenger air bag, with a child in that seat, can increase the risk of injury to the child.
Fix: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the OCS/ODS unit, free of charge. The recall began March 18, 2021. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC207.

Your engine stalled without warning in traffic shortly after an oil change, creating a dangerous situation. The dealership identified an engine malfunction, but it wasn't covered under warranty since your car had just exceeded 70,000 miles. You're concerned this may be part of a larger defect affecting other Kia owners.

Your car experienced a sudden loud noise while driving and lost power, making it unsafe to operate. A mechanic found that your engine had no oil in it, which matches a known defect in Kia's Theta II GDI engines that can cause engine seizure and fire. Although your vehicle has the same problem as recalled cars, Kia refused to cover a repair because your VIN isn't on the recall list.

Your 2021 Kia Forte GT has experienced complete engine failure after months of excessive oil consumption—the engine was burning about a quart of oil per week or faster. You noticed a hard knocking or rattling sound before the engine gave way while you were driving, which created a safety risk for you and other drivers on the road. Kia has received previous complaints and lawsuits about this same issue on your model year. The repair will likely require a full engine replacement or major engine overhaul.

Shortly after getting a routine oil change, your 2021 Kia Forte lost power, wouldn't accelerate, and eventually shut down. The engine now makes a terrible clicking noise and multiple mechanics believe the engine is blown. Kia is refusing to take responsibility because your car isn't currently on a recall, even though the company has issued multiple engine-related recalls on Forte models. Fixing this will likely require a complete engine replacement, which costs over $10,000.

Your check engine light keeps coming on while driving, and your car vibrates noticeably—especially when slowing down or at traffic lights. The vibration and warning light return even after restarting the vehicle, and lately your car has lost power and stalled a few times, with the idle RPM bouncing up and down as if you're pressing the gas pedal. Your dealer has checked it multiple times but couldn't find the problem and said everything is working fine, though nothing has been repaired. A complete engine diagnostic and ignition coil inspection will likely be needed to identify the source of the misfiring and power loss.

Power Train →2 issues
While driving on the highway during winter weather, your transmission started slipping or missing gears around 2nd or 3rd gear, making it difficult to accelerate and maintain consistent speeds. You drove about 60 miles to a Kia dealership where technicians confirmed you need a new transmission, even though no diagnostic codes were initially found—warning lights only appeared near the end of your drive. The transmission replacement will involve removing and reinstalling a new or rebuilt transmission unit.

While driving on the highway, your transmission started causing the car to jerk and rev unpredictably, with the engine slowing down and speeding up on its own. The vehicle is currently at a service center for diagnosis. This could indicate a transmission fluid issue, sensor problem, or internal transmission damage that needs professional inspection and repair.

Air Bags,seat Belts →2 issues
Your car was involved in a collision at 20 MPH on the passenger side, but the airbags did not deploy even though injuries occurred. Additionally, the seat belt failed to retract after the collision. Your car was in two additional accidents where the airbags also failed to deploy, though a body shop suggested those collisions may not have been severe enough to trigger deployment. A diagnostic inspection at a Kia dealer or independent mechanic would be needed to determine why the safety systems did not respond as expected.

Your passenger side airbag and seat belt warning system activates as if someone is sitting there, even when the seat is empty. You have to manually fasten the seat belt to stop the warning alert from continuing. This suggests a malfunction in the passenger seat occupancy sensor that detects whether someone is actually sitting there.

Exterior Lighting,air Bags,structure →1 issue
Your 2021 Kia Forte was involved in a severe frontal collision on the passenger side that resulted in the vehicle being declared a total loss. Despite the significant impact and damage, the airbags failed to deploy. The owner experienced body pain after the accident and is concerned that the airbag system did not function as intended to protect occupants. A diagnostic inspection of the airbag control module and crash sensors will likely be needed to determine why the system didn't activate.

Seat Belts →1 issue
Both your front seat belts are coming unlatched while you're driving, forcing you to take your hands off the wheel to refasten them. This happens multiple times on the highway, creating a safety distraction. The dealership said it's out of warranty and won't repair it for free. Fixing this will likely involve inspecting the seat belt latching mechanism and replacing the latch assembly or seat belt retractor if defective.

Electrical System, unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your 2021 Kia Forte may be vulnerable to theft due to an anti-theft system weakness in the steering column and ignition system that was identified in a manufacturer recall (CS2305C) issued in early 2023. If your vehicle hasn't had this recall service completed, it could be stolen using the known vulnerability method without forced entry or specialized tools. You should contact your Kia dealer or check your vehicle's recall status to ensure this critical anti-theft system repair has been performed.

Steering →1 issue
Your power steering system may delay activating after the car has been driving straight, causing stiff resistance when you try to steer. When the assist suddenly kicks in, it can overcorrect your steering input and create an unstable back-and-forth steering pattern, especially at highway speeds. This unpredictable behavior requires constant two-handed control and increases the risk of drifting into another lane or losing control. A technician will need to diagnose the electric power steering motor's response timing and likely replace or reprogram the steering control module.

Structure →1 issue
Your hood rattles while driving, and the dealer found that the rubber hood bumpers are too short to properly secure it. The hood latch appears secure but cannot be adjusted further, and the dealer won't address the noise after 12 months or 12,000 miles. You're concerned the hood may not be properly secured due to this defective design.

Unknown Or Other,engine,fuel/propulsion System →1 issue
Your 2021 Kia Forte lacks an engine immobilizer system that would prevent thieves from starting the car without the correct key — most other cars have this protection built in. You've had to stop theft attempts yourself, and insurance companies are charging you double the normal rate or refusing to insure the vehicle because the software update doesn't address the underlying security vulnerability. A proper fix would require Kia to install a chipped/programmed ignition system or engine starter kill switch that only operates with the correct key.

Power Train,electrical System,unknown Or Other →1 issue
Your car's transmission is shifting erratically when you drive on a specific patch of highway, causing the car to feel like it's pulling backward and losing acceleration. After you exit the highway, the car continues to downshift excessively, nearly coming to a complete stop without you braking. The dealership confirmed this is a computer issue (not a transmission failure) and that resetting the computer temporarily fixes it, but the problem returns when you drive on the highway again. The fix will likely involve the dealership diagnosing and reprogramming the transmission control computer or identifying a sensor issue causing the erratic shift commands.
