POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
CHRYSLER IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007 THROUGH 2008 JEEP WRANGLER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM JUNE 2006 THROUGH JULY 2008, EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. THESE VEHICLES WERE NOT EQUIPPED WITH A TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE WARNING SYSTEM.
Fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND INSTALL A "HOTOIL" MESSAGE IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND A CHIME INDICATING AN ELEVATED TRANSMISSION FLUID CONDITION. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 22, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHRYSLER AT 1-800-835-1403.

I bought my 2007 Jeep Wrangler in November 2020. It had approximately 122,000 miles on it and has the 6 speed manual transmission. After driving it for 7 days, I was backing out of a parking spot and heard a loud squeal and was unable to shift gears. It had to have the clutch replaced along with the flywheel and several other clutch associated parts. The total was $1,600. The salesman at the dealership where I bought it told me as I was buying it that there is no warranty but if something happens in the first couple of weeks that he would work with us. Of course he did NOT help me. He wouldn't even return my phone calls. Whatever, buyer beware! Second issue is of course the fuel spit back problem. Every time I fill up, I end up with gas on the Jeep and on the ground. I love wasting money like that. There is apparently a recall on this issue but your website says my vehicle has no recalls. Third issue is all the door hinges are rusting really bad. I saw that there were several service bulletins on the proper procedures for replacing those hinges. Those should be replaced by the dealer at no cost.
TIMP HAS GONE BAD. CAUSES ALL GAUGES TO QUIT WORKING, STALLS ENGINE DURING OPERATIING, DOOR LOCKS AND SECURITY SYSTEM INOPERABLE, HEADLIGHTS WORK THEN DON'T WORK. LIGHTS COME ON EVEN IF SWITCH IS OFF. WINDOW MOTORS QUIT WORKING. THE WELL KNOWN FAILURE OF THE TIMP IN CHRYSLER VEHICLES, ESPECIALLY ALL JEEP WRANGLER SERIES DATING AS FAR BACK AS 2006, HAVE NOT BEEN ADDRESSED NOR FIXED BY CHRYSLER. THIS TIMP FAILURE IS A SEVERE SAFETY HAZARD AND NEEDS AN IMMEDIATE RECALL FORCED UPON CHRYSLER/DAIMLER/JEEP. MY 2007 JEEP WRANGLER JKU TIMP QUIT WORKING, WHILST I WAS DRIVING. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT OF WHICH COULD HAVE RESULTED IN INJURY, AND/OR DEATH. THANKFULLY, I WAS ABLE TO PHYSICALLY THROUGH THE DISABLED POWER STEERING TO STOP VEHICLE. THROUGH MY RESEARCH, IT APPEARS THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE PLAGUING NEARLY EVERY JEEP WRANGLER PRODUCED. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE NOW TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. I WONDER IF ANYONE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT CAUSING INJURY OR DEATH OR DAMAGE COULD HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE TIMP. I AM GOING TO DISCUSS THIS ISSUE WITH THE NORTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND NC AND US ATTORNEY'S GENERAL'S OFFICE AS WELL. THIS HAS TO BE FIXED NOW WITH IMMEDIATE RECALL FORCING CHRYSLER/DAIMLER/JEEP TO FIX THE TIMP.
WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE ENGINE OF MY JEEP CAUGHT FIRE GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE ATTEMPTED TO PUT IT OUT WITHOUT SUCCESS THE ENGINE ENGULFED IN FLAMES AND THE WHOLE JEEP BURNT I CALLED THE POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENT AND POLICE CAME
THIS IS A SIX SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLE. FROM STOP INTO FIRST GEAR, THE VEHICLE VIOLENTLY POPS OUT OF FIRST GEAR INTO PARTIAL NEUTRAL. THERE IS NO BINDING APPARENT FROM ANY OF THE DUST BOOTS ON THE SHIFTER LEVER. I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE SINCE LATE 2009. IT WAS STORED FOR A YEAR AND ONLY DRIVEN MONTHLY FOR SHORT PERIODS. UPON RETURN FROM MY DEPLOYMENT I DROVE THIS VEHICLE AS MY DAILY DRIVER UP TO CURRENT. THE HOTTER THE WEATHER, THE MORE THE TRANSMISSION POPS OUT OF GEAR. EVER SINCE I'VE HAD THE VEHICLE, IT HAS HAD THIS ISSUE. IT VIOLENTLY POPS OUT IF FIRST GEAR 1 TO 2 TIMES A WEEK; OCCASIONALLY MORE. IT IS NOW BECOMING MORE APPARENT THAT THIS IS A VERY UNSAFE ISSUE. RECENTLY, WHEN TRYING TO MAKE LEFT HAND TURNS ACROSS TRAFFIC, IT WOULD POP OUT OF GEAR AND I WOULD QUICKLY HAVE TO RECOVER AND GET IT BACK INTO GEAR BEFORE ONCOMING TRAFFIC APPROACHED. I HAVE SEEN HUNDREDS OF BLOGS AND INTERNET POSTS STATING THE SAME EXACT ISSUE STATED BY HUNDREDS, IF NOT THOUSANDS OF OTHER JEEP OWNERS OF SIMILAR YEARS AND REFERENCING HAVING TO CHANGE OUT 1 AND 2 GEAR SYNCHROS ACCORDING TO A JEEP BULLETIN. SO, IF JEEP KNOWS IT IS A MAJOR ISSUE, THEN WHY ISN'T THERE A RECALL? OTHERS WERE LUCKY TO GET REPAIRS FOR FREE UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THE MAJORITY OF OWNERS WERE OUT OF WARRANTY, SIMILAR TO ME. SINCE THIS IS SUCH A PREDOMINANT MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE, THEN THIS IS CLEARLY A NEED FOR A RECALL FOR THOSE THAT NEED/REQUIRE THE REPAIR. HISTORY WISE, I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN NOVEMBER 2009 WITH 15703 MILES ON IT. BY APPROX. FEBRUARY 2011 WHEN I STARTED DRIVING IT DAILY AND AT ABOUT 17000 MILES THE ISSUE STARTED. THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS ABOUT 89800 MILES ON IT.
VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE WHILE SITTING IN DRIVEWAY IN FRONT OF HOME 30 MINUTES AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE. TOTAL LOSS.
I HAVE A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER WITH A MANUAL TRANSMISSION. RECENTLY IT HAS STARTED TO OCCASIONALLY AND VIOLENTLY POP OUT OF FIRST GEAR. THE ISSUE ONLY HAPPENS FROM A STANDSTILL INTO A ROLLING START SUCH AS AT A STOP SIGN OR TRAFFIC LIGHT. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE AS I COULD EASILY BE REAR ENDED IN BUSY TRAFFIC. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ IN THE DIFFERENT WRANGLER FORUMS, THERE HAVE BEEN MANY CUSTOMERS WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THERE IS A DETAILED TSB REGARDING THIS REPAIR. I KNOW STARTING IN 2008, THE JEEPS CAME WITH A LIFETIME WARRANTY ON THE POWERTRAIN. I'M INQUIRING TODAY AS TO WHY THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL ISSUED FOR THOSE OF US WITH THE '07. IT'S THE SAME MOTOR, SAME TRANSMISSION AS THE 08-2010 MODELS. I ONLY HAVE 124K MILES ON IT, AND HAVE OWNED THE JEEP FOR 10 YEARS. THE TSB RELATED INVOLVES REPLACING FIRST GEAR, AND THE 1/2 SYNCHROS. I HAVE ALREADY REACHED OUT TO JEEP/FCA AND WAS REFERRED BACK TO JUST SEEK REPAIR. I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT JEEP/CHRYSLER SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS KNOWN PROBLEM/ COMMON DEFECT IN ENGINEERING, ESPECIALLY SINCE THE MODEL YEAR JK AFTER '07 CAME WITH THE LIFETIME POWER TRAIN WARRANTY.
THE VEHICLE JUMPS OUT OF GEAR OFTEN WHEN BEGINNING ACCELERATION WHILE IN FIRST GEAR AND SOMETIMES WHEN TURNING WHILE IN THIRD GEAR. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS DEFECT. IT COULD HAVE PARTICULARLY DEADLY CONSEQUENCES WHEN STARTING FROM A DEAD STOP AND PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC OR TURNING IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC (OF COURSE WHEN GIVEN PLENTY OF TIME AND SPACE AND YIELDING OF RIGHT OF WAY TO OTHER VEHICLES), IF IT WERE TO LEAVE YOU STOPPED ALL OF A SUDDEN AFTER POPPING OUT OF GEAR. IT'S UNBELIEVABLE THAT JEEP AND DEALERSHIPS DENY THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM WHEN IT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR OVER A DECADE NOW WITH NO OFFICIAL FIX OR RECALL. WE'VE "LEARNED" TO DRIVE IT WITH THIS DYSFUNCTION, BUT THIS SHOULD BE LEADING TO WRONGFUL DEATH LAWSUITS IF IT EVER CAUSED SUCH.
I BOUGHT MY JEEP 12/12/16 AND IT HAD 43,319 MILES ON IT. ON 2/7/17 AT 45,233 MILES I HAD THE FIRST ENGINE REPLACEMENT DONE. ON 5/17/17 AT 46,552 MILES I HAD THE TRANSMISSION REBUILT. ON 11/1/18 AT 65,858 MILES I HAD THE SECOND ENGINE REPLACEMENT. ON 3/8/19 AT 68,980 MILES I HAD THE THIRD REPLACEMENT ENGINE INSTALLED. I GOT MY JEEP BACK ON 4/15/19 AND NOW I HEAR A TICKING LIKE SOUND AND I'M TOLD IT COULD BE AN EXHAUST LEAK. ALSO, BEFORE I GOT THE THIRD ENGINE INSTALLED THE JEEP WOULD POP OUT OF FIRST GEAR WHEN I START TO ACCELERATE, JUST LIKE BEFORE. I TALKED TO THE MECHANIC WHO REBUILT MY TRANSMISSION AND HE SAID THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 2007 JEEP WRANGLER. HE SAID HE COULD FIX IT, BUT EVENTUALLY IT WILL START POPPING OUT OF FIRST GEAR AGAIN.
MY JEEP WITH 86K MILES ENGINE BLEW. ONE WEEK EARLIER WHEN DRIVING OVER 40 MILES PER HOUR IT SEEMED TO WOBBLE A BIT FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, I THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS BECAUSE I HAD 4 WHEEL DRIVE ON. I HAVE ONLY OWNED IT FOR A MONTH AND IT IS A 2ND VEHICLE AND I WAS NOT SURE IF THAT WAS NORMAL OR NOT. THEN AFTER NOT DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR 4 DAYS I MOVED IT OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND WAS LESS THEN A BLOCK FROM MY HOME WHEN THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON AND HALF A BLOCK LATER THE ENGINE CUT OUT. THE CAR WOULDNT START AGAIN AND I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED IT. THEY TOLD ME THE INTERNAL FUEL PUMP SEEMED TO MALFUNCTION AND THE ENGINE WAS BLOWN! WHEN I RETURNED HOME I NOTICED A POOL OF OIL IN MY DRIVEWAY. THIS CAR SAT FOR DAYS AND WAS BARELY DRIVEN BY ME SINCE MY PURCHASE. HOW DOES AN ENGINE AT 86K MILES JUST BLOW? HOW DOES OIL JUST DUMP OUT OF A VEHICLE? WHY? WELL DOING INTERNET RESEARCH IT APPEARS THAT THIS 2007 ENGINE YEAR THERE WAS A MISTAKE IN THE ENGINES WHERE PISTONS WERE PUT IN UPSIDE DOWN? THERE WAS NO RECALL FOR THIS AND MANY 2007 JEEPS HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN. I AM LUCKY IT HAPPENED ON A LOCAL ROAD, IF I WAS DRIVING 65 IN MIDDLE LANE OF A HIGHWAY AND MY ENGINE JUST SHUT OFF I WOULD BE DEAD. I COULDNT STEER IT. IT JUST STOPPED..... I HAVE TRIED CALLING CHRYSLER AND HAVE BEEN TRANSFERED MANY TIMES TO OTHER PEOPLE, I AM AT A LOSS OF WHAT TO DO. AGAIN, I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE 1.5 MONTHS...
JEEP WILL NOT START INTERMITTENTLY, WHEN TURNING THE KEY OVER THE JEEP WILL CLICK ONCE AND THE STARTER WILL NOT TURN OVER. SOMETIMES YOU CAN TRY AGIN RIGHT AWAY AND IT'LL START. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO WIGGLE THE GEAR SHIFTER, AND SOMETIMES IT TAKES AWHILE TO GET IT TO TURN OVER AND START. I WAS TOLD IT IS EITHER AN IGNITION PROBLEM OR A NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH, BUT GEARED TOWARDS THE LATTER. IT DOES IT WHETHER PARKED ON A HILL, FLAT, WARM OR COLD. ACCORDING TO MANY JEEP PAGES AND FORUMS THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER. WHILE THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THE VEHICLE INDEPENDENTLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. A LOCAL DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OPENED A CASE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 139,388.
THE VEHICLE WILL NOT STAY IN 1ST GEAR (MANUAL 6 SPEED). YOU MUST HOLD THE SHIFTER, WITH FORCE IN FIRST GEAR OR ELSE IT "POPS OUT"...MAKES A BAD NOISE WHEN DOING SO. I LOOKED ON JEEP FORUMS AND THERE ARE 5 PAGES OR MORE OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING OF THIS EXACT ISSUE. ITS A SAFETY ISSUE. IF YOU PULL INTO AN INTERSECTION TO MAKE A TURN, AND ARE NOT HOLDING THE SHIFTER WITH ENOUGH FORCE AND IT POPS OUT OF GEAR, YOU MIGHT GET HIT BY AN ONCOMING CAR, SINCE YOU'VE STOPPED GOING FORWARD. PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP LIGHT OR STOP SIGN, THE CAR BEHIND YOU MIGHT SLAM INTO YOU, BECAUSE YOU STARTED TO GO THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN STOPPED GOING FORWARD. THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM WITH THESE MANUAL TRANSMISSION WRANGLERS - THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL. THIS IS NOT A RANDOM OCCURRANCE. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME.
VEHICLE WILL JUMP OUT OF 1ST GEAR AFTER 10 FEET INTO AN INTERSECTION WHEN TAKING OFF FROM A STOP, LEAVING YOU IN THE MIDDLE OF ONCOMING SIDE TRAFFIC WHILE IN NEUTRAL. I HAVE ALMOST BEEN HIT MULTIPLE TIMES. THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN THAT JEEP IS AWARE OF THE DANGEROUS PROBLEM. THIS IS ON THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION MODELS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER 2-DR 4X4. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO REVERSE THE VEHICLE, THE GEAR SHIFT FAILED TO SWITCH GEARS WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE GEAR CONNECTOR LINK FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT NOT BY THE DEALER. THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED AGAIN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
MY JEEP WILL START BUT NO GAUGES OR LIGHT ON DASH COME ON, THE WIPERS TURN ON AT FULL POWER. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE JEEP WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF PARK. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE TIPM IS CAUSING THE ISSUES.

JEEP VIOLENTLY POPS OUT OF FIRST GEAR WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE L. HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. FROM DOING RESEARCH ONLINE THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH PEOPLE WHO OWN THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION JEEP JK MODEL. THIS CAN BE EXCEPTIONALLY DANGEROUS WHEN GOING THROUGH INTERSECTIONS OR CHANGING LANES AS THE JEEP WILL POP OUT IF GEAR AND NO LONGER ACCELERATE. THIS HAS HAPPENED SINCE DAY ONE OF ME PURCHASING IT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER SAHARA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE GEAR WAS SHIFTED, THE CLUTCH PLATE SQUEAKED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE CLUTCH PLATE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 92,000.
I BOUGHT THE 2007 JEEP JK USED WITH APPROXIMATELY 81,000 MILES. SHORTLY, AFTER OWNING THE VEHICLE I EXPERIENCED THE JUMP OUT OF GEAR (JOG). IT IS A VERY FRIGHTENING, AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS PROBLEM WITH THIS TRANSMISSION. THE PROBLEM OCCURS WHEN STARTING IN FIRST GEAR FROM A DEAD STOP. MOST OFTEN, THERE ARE VEHICLES BEHIND YOU, WHEN THE JOG OCCURS THE VEHICLES BEHIND ARE NOT PREPARED FOR YOUR LOSS OF FORWARD MOMENTUM. ON ONE INSTANCE I HAVE BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND. ON MANY OTHER INSTANCES THERE HAVE BEEN SOME CLOSE CALLS. THE OTHER DANGER IS IF ONE IS PULLING OUT AND CROSSING A TRAFFIC LANE. LOSING FORWARD MOMENTUM CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS AS CARS APPROACH FROM EITHER THE LEFT OR RIGHT SIDE. I TRULY BELIEVE THIS ISSUE IS A RESULT OF A TRANSMISSION DESIGN FLAW THAT SHOULD BE COVERED BY JEEP NO MATTER IF THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. IN MOST OF THESE CASES, THERE HAS TO BE SEVERAL RELATED INJURIES BEFORE THESE MANUFACTURERS WILL TAKE ACTION. IT IS ALL A COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS.
TRANSMISSION COOLER LINE CRIMP CONNECTION FAILS SPILLING TRANS FLUID
I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD THE JEEP STARTED SPITTING AND SPUTTERING I PULLED OVER TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON AS I GO TO GET OUT IT BURSTED INTO FLAMES FROM UNDER THE HOOD THEN QUICKLY SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE JEEP QUICKLY
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER. WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE COOLANT LINES FOR THE TRANSMISSION BLEW OUT AND CAUSED THE TRANSMISSION TO STALL WITHOUT WARNING. IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO FAULTY COOLANT LINES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 144,000.
ENGINE IS CONSUMING EXCESS AMOUNT OF OIL BETWEEN OIL CHANGES. NO OIL LEAKS DETECTED (NO LEAKS FOUND). ENGINE IS CONSUMING 7 TO 8 QUARTS OF OIL PER 5000 MILES. NOTICED THIS AROUND 45,000 MILES. MY JEEP NOW HAS 62,000 ON THE ODOMETER.
AT 2 MPH IN 2H AND 1ST GEAR OF MANUAL TRANSMISSION, DROVE ONTO A WET GRASSY AREA AND ENGAGED THE TRANSFER CASE INTO 4H. AFTER 150 FEET AT 3 MPH AND VEHICLE ROLLING, I DEPRESSED CLUTCH AND SHIFTED TRANSFER CASE INTO 4L. MADE U-TURN AND CREPT AT 2 MPH. MOVING FORWARD, DEPRESSED CLUTCH, LET OFF GAS AND SHIFTED TRANSFER CASE INTO 4H, DROVE TO THE EDGE OF STREET AND STOPPED. WITH FOOT ON BRAKE, AND CLUTCH DEPRESSED, I SHIFTED THE TRANSFER CASE INTO 2H POSITION BUT HEARD SNAPPING SOUND AND THE LEVER WENT LOOSE. TAKING HOLD OF THE LEVER, I FOUND IT FLOPPED FREELY FORWARD AND BACK. MANUAL TRANSMISSION WAS IN FIRST GEAR, BUT WHEN I LET THE CLUTCH UP, THE VEHICLE DIDNT MOVE. NOTHING HANGING FROM THE TRANSMISSION OR TRANSFER CASE. DEPRESSED CLUTCH, PUT GEARSHIFT LEVER IN NEUTRAL AND STARTED. PUT THE GEARSHIFT LEVER INTO 1ST, BUT WHEN I LET UP ON CLUTCH, THE VEHICLE DID NOT MOVE. I RELEASED THE CLUTCH WITH GEARSHIFT LEVER IN 1ST AND RELEASED THE PARKING BRAKE. THE VEHICLE ROLLED BACKWARD INTO THE SWALE. VEHICLE TOWED TO JEEP DEALERSHIP. INVOICE STATES, "CUSTOMER STATES WHILE SHIFTING VEH. INTO 4H SOMETHING SNAPPED AND NOW VEH. WON'T GO INTO GEAR AT ALL. TECH FOUND TRANSFER CASE SHIFT CABLE BROKEN AT BOTH ENDS. COMPLETED REMOVAL & REPLACEMENT OF TRANSFER CASE SHIFT CABLE. MY CONCERN IS THIS COULD HAPPEN WHEN SOMEONE SHIFTS INTO 4H WHILE DRIVING ON A WET, SLIPPERY ROAD SURFACE UP TO 50 MPH. THE VEHICLE WOULD QUICKLY LOOSE FORWARD MOMENTUM, COASTING TO A STOP, AND POSSIBLY BE STRUCK FROM BEHIND.

I HAVE A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER WITH A 6 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL INSTANCES THAT WHILE STARTING FROM A STOPPED POSITION SUCH AS AT A STOP SIGN THE TRANSMISSION SUDDENLY POPS OUT OF FIRST GEAR. THIS VEHICLE WAS CLASSIFIED AS HAVING EXCELLENT OFF-ROAD CAPABILITIES. AFTER IT'S FIRST EXCURSION OFF-ROAD, THE CLUTCH THROWOUT BEARING WAS FOUND TO BE RATTLING AND HAD COME APART. A FULL CLUTCH REPLACEMENT WAS COMPLETED WITH ALL NEW COMPONENTS BY A LICENSED AND CERTIFIED MECHANIC WITH EXCELLENT OUTCOME. 1 MONTH AFTER THE CLUTCH REPLACEMENT THE CLUTCH PEDAL SUDDENLY WENT TO THE FLOOR AND WOULD NOT RELEASE THE CLUTCH. REPLACEMENT OF THE CLUTCH SLAVE, MASTER AND HYDRAULIC LINE AS WELL AS A FULL HYDRAULIC FLUID FLUSH YIELDED NO SUCCESS EVEN WITH PRESSURE AND VACUUM APPLICATIONS TO BLEED THE SYSTEM. THIS FAILURE OF PLASTIC PARTS DESIGNED FOR OFF-ROAD APPLICATIONS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. THIS SYSTEM IS FED BY THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR AND COULD COMPROMISE THE BRAKING SYSTEM IF IT FAILS. THIS POPPING OUT BEGAN TO HAPPEN AS OFTEN AS 3 TIMES A DAY RESULTING IN MORE "CLOSE CALLS" AND, TSB IN HAND, I SCHEDULED THE PROBLEM TO BE CORRECTED AT THE DEALER. AT FIRST IT WAS JUST ONCE OR TWICE A MONTH, IT HAS PROGRESSED TO A POINT WHERE IT WAS DOING IT 4-6 TIMES PER DAY. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THAT I WAS NOT ENGAGING IT PROPERLY, BUT I'VE SUBSEQUENTLY TRIED TO HOLD IT IN 1ST GEAR AND IT FORCES ITSELF OUT OF GEAR SO HARD THAT IT ALMOST BROKE MY WRIST. I'VE NOTICED THAT IT POPS OUT MORE UPON LOW TO MEDIUM ACCELERATION. LAST MONTH, I APPROACHED AN INTERSECTION IN AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE A RIGHT HAD TURN. AS I ATTEMPTED TO MAKE THE TURN FROM A STOPPED POSITION, UPON MODERATE ACCELERATION, THE TRANSMISSION POPPED OUT OF FIRST GEAR AND LEFT ME STALLED IN NEUTRAL IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. FORTUNATELY, THE VEHICLE BEHIND WAS ABLE TO SKID AND BARELY HIT MY SLOWED VEHICLE. AT THIS POINT MY WIFE STOPPED DRIVING THE VEHICLE AS SHE FELT IT WAS TWO DANGEROUS. I WAS NOW CONVINCED THAT THIS CONDITION WAS VERY UNSAFE AND RETURNED THE VEHICLE (@49,500 MILES) TO A JEEP DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. THE DEALERSHIP UPDATED THE 1-2 SYNCHRONIZER ASSEMBLY WITH STRONGER DETENT SPRINGS PURSUANT TO THE CHRYSLER/JEEP TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 21-001-10 THAT WAS ISSUED ON MARCH 2, 2010. I ENCOURAGE YOU TO INVESTIGATE THIS DEFECT IN ORDER TO PREVENT SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH TO ADDITIONAL VEHICLE OWNERS. *TR

THIS SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHEN ACCELERATION IS NEEDED MOST OF ALL SUCH AS WHEN TURNING LEFT ON A BUSY 4-LANE ROAD. DRIVER IS THEN UNABLE TO PUT CAR IN ANY GEAR FOR SEVERAL SECONDS. THIS WILL LEAD TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT EVENTUALLY BY BEING HIT BROADSIDE OR FROM THE REAR IF STALLED LEAVING A TRAFFIC LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. DEALER ACTS LIKE THEY NEVER HEARD OF THIS BUT THE WEB IS FULL OF SIMILAR REPORTS. THERE IS NO FIX FOR THIS OTHER THAN A TRANSMISSION REDESIGN. THIS HAS HAPPENED ABOUT 15 TIMES IN THE PAST 3-YEARS. WHILE DRIVING ON PAVED ROADS AT SPEEDS OF 35 MPH OR LESS IN A LOCAL PARK, A LOUD CHIME BEGAN TO SOUND WITH NO CORRESPONDING INDICATOR LIGHT. I PULLED OVER AND SHUT THE ENGINE OFF, WAITED A FEW SECONDS, RESTARTED THE ENGINE, THE CHIME WAS NOT SOUNDING, SO I DROVE HOME. ONCE ON THE HIGHWAY, THE TORQUE CONVERTER WOULD NOT LOCK UP PROPERLY AND CONTINUED TO SLIP FOR SEVERAL MILES UNTIL NORMAL OPERATION RESUMED. AFTER CHECKING EVERYTHING ONCE HOME, IT APPEARS THAT THE CHIME WAS INDICATING THE TRANSMISSION WAS OVERHEATING, EXPLAINING THE MALFUNCTION OF THE TORQUE CONVERTER. WHILST DRIVING AT 65MPH THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO VIBRATE VIOLENTLY AND BECOME UNCONTROLLABLE. ALMOST LIKE IT WAS BOUNCING FROM TIRE TO TIRE. CAME TO A STOP AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THEY HAVE RECOGNIZED THE PROBLEM AND FIXED IT. I WAS TOLD IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE TORQUE CONVERTER. THIS OCCURRED AROUND 14000 MILES. SINCE IT WAS "FIXED" I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION AND WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM. THE INITIAL PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN AT AROUND 16,000 MILES THE VEHICLE BECOMES UNCONTROLLABLE DUE TO THE VIOLENT SHAKING. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. *TR

THEN ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND WAS SUCCESSFUL. THE SECOND TIME THE INCIDENT OCCURRED WARNING LIGHTS TURNED ON, AND THE RADIO TURNED OFF FOR ANOTHER 5 SECOND. HE TOOK FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND LEFT THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE AND THE VEHICLE REGAINED SPEED, THE LIGHTS TURNED OFF AND THE RADIO TURNED BACK ON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE NOTICED THAT SOMETIMES WHEN HE OPENED THE WINDOWS THE RADIO WAS OFF FOR ABOUT 5 SECONDS. THE CONTACT DID TAKE VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP FOR SECOND TIME, AND THEY REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND THE CIRCUIT BRAKE PANEL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR AGAIN ON 12/26/06 BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS STILL HAVING THE SAME ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. *AK UPDATED 1/17/2006 - WINDSHIELD BRACKET BOLTS CORRODED.
