CHRYSLER IS RECALLING 1,585 MY 2007-2008 JEEP WRANGLER, RIGHT HAND DRIVE ONLY, VEHICLES. SOME VEHICLES MAY HAVE INSUFFICIENT CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT AND REAR BRAKE TUBES.

Fix: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REVISED BRAKE TUBE CLIP TO RETAIN THE TUBES, INSPECT THE BRAKE TUBES FOR DAMAGE DUE TO POTENTIAL CONTACT WITH THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, AND REPLACE THE BRAKE TUBES IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 30, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

THERE MAY BE CONTACT BETWEEN THE RIGHT AND LEFT FRONT INNER FENDER LINERS AND THE RIGHT FRONT AND LEFT REAR BRAKE TUBES WHICH COULD CAUSE WEAR OF THE TUBES CAUSING A BRAKE FLUID LEAK.

While driving into a parking area, you heard a loud bang and your brake pedal became very soft—requiring you to pump it several times before the vehicle stopped. Upon inspection, you discovered the rear passenger side tire was punctured and the brake caliper and rotor had detached from the wheel. The detached caliper appears to have caused the tire puncture. This brake system failure happened at 86,000 miles with no warning lights beforehand.

FRONT WHEEL BRAKES BECAME COMPLETELY INOPERATIVE AS VERIFIED BY JACKING UP THE FRONT WHEELS AND TESTING. REAR BRAKES STILL OPERATED, BUT MINIMALLY. SUSPECT THE ABS UNIT FAILS BY STICKING IN A FAULTY BYPASS STATE THAT DISABLES MOST OF THE BRAKING CAPACITY, INSTEAD OF A FAIL-SAFE FAULT MODE.

ON MONDAY OCTOBER 16, 2017 I STARTED MY JEEP TO LEAVE FOR WORK. AS I BACKED OUT OF MY PARKING SPACE AT MY APARTMENT AND FELT THE BRAKE PEDAL GO TO THE FLOOR. I ALMOST HIT A NEARBY CAR BUT WAS ABLE TO PULL THE CAR INTO AN OPPOSITE PARKING SPACE AND THE CURB HELPED ME STOP THE CAR. I HAD BEEN DRIVING THE CAR THE DAY BEFORE WITHOUT ANY INDICATION OF A PROBLEM. I WAS ABLE TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A NEARBY REPAIR CENTER. THE MECHANIC CALLED ME TO EXPLAIN THAT THE BRAKE CABLE HAD CORRODED AND THAT THIS WAS THE SECOND OLDER JEEP THAT HE HAD SEEN WITH THIS PROBLEM. HE SUGGESTED THAT I NOTIFY YOU TO REPORT THIS ISSUE. I'M COUNTING MY BLESSINGS THAT THIS HAPPENED IN MY PARKING LOT AND NOT A FEW MINUTES LATER WHEN I WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE AT 70 MPH. THE TOTAL COST OF MY REPAIR WAS $446 BECAUSE THE BRAKE SYSTEM HAS BEEN REDESIGNED ACCORDING TO THE MECHANIC. THE BRAKE HOSE, CALIPER , BRAKE PADS AND FRONT BRAKE ROTORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I HAD AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC LOOK AT THIS AND HE BELIEVES IT IS A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN ON THE VEHICLE. THE STOCK L/F TIRE SHOULD NEVER TOUCH THE BRAKE LINE WITHIN THE TURNING RADIUS OF THE VEHICLE. I WAS VERY LUCKY THAT I DIDN'T TRAVEL VERY FAR WITH THE CALIPER LOCKED ON THE WHEEL, IT COULD OF LED TO A FIRE. CHRYSLER DID NOT CLAIM ANY FAULT AND CHARGED ME FOR THE REPAIR. NO WARNING LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO A MALFUNCTION OF THE WIRING IN THE ABS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. ON A SEPARATE OCCASION, THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR AN IDENTICAL FAILURE AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DETECT THE MALFUNCTION. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 12,300.

HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY FOUND A FAILURE AT THE BRAKE PURGE TANK, WHICH RIPPED AND CAUSED THE BRAKE LINE TO PULL DOWN. ABS/ TRACTION CONTROL/ ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL ENGAGES AT TIMES WHEN USING HIGHWAY ON/ OFF RAMPS AND WITHOUT APPLYING THE BRAKES. VEHICLE HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED FOR THIS ISSUE BY UPDATING THE ABS CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE TO THE LATEST VERSION, BUT THE ISSUE STILL PERSISTS. THE ABS MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATES AND STAYS ILLUMINATED, BUT THE DEALER CAN FIND NO TROUBLE CODES. NOTE: THIS VEHICLE DID NOT FALL INTO CAMPAIGN 06V493000 AS THE ABS MODULE UNDER THE SCOPE OF THAT RECALL WAS INTRODUCED TWO DAYS AFTER THIS VEHICLE WAS BUILT.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE COASTED AND RESTARTED ON ITS OWN. THE VEHICLE FAILED AGAIN WHILE PULLING INTO THE DRIVEWAY. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. ON JULY 10, 2007, THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 07V291000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE VEHICLE HAS NOT STALLED SINCE THE REPAIR, BUT CONTINUES TO HESITATE AS IF IT WILL STALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TWICE BECAUSE THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM FAILED. ON AUGUST 27, 2007, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE ABS AND ANTI-SKID LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER FOR THE A/C SYSTEM. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 18,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,384.

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 JEEP WRANGLER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILS TO ACCELERATE AND SHUTS OFF AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE IGNITION SWITCH MUST BE TURNED OFF IN ORDER TO RESTART THE ENGINE. HE STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED FIVE TIMES WITHIN THE LAST TEN DAYS. THE DEALER HAS REPROGRAMMED THE COMPUTER AT LEAST TWICE. ALSO, WHEN MAKING A RIGHT TURN, THE ANTI-SKID CONTROL ACTIVATES AND THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. THE ANTI-SKID CONTROL LIGHT ILLUMINATES AND THEN DIMS AFTER THE TURN IS MADE. THE DEALERS VERIFIED WITH A ROAD TEST THAT THE ANTI-SKID DOES ACTIVATE AT APPROXIMATELY 25-35 MPH, BUT NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN MADE. THE CONTACT WAS UNSURE OF THE COMPONENT NAMES REGARDING THE REPROGRAMMING AND ANTI-SKID FAILURES. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 4,200 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 3,300.
