ENGINE

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017 Tucson and Sonata Hybrid vehicles. The connecting rod bearings inside the engine may wear prematurely, which can result in engine damage.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the engine. If bearing damage is found, the engine will be replaced. Dealers will also install a software update containing a new Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS). Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners were notified of the defect on November 16, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed January 15, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 209.

My 2017 Hyundai Tucson is experiencing severe oil consumption, which appears to be related to a known manufacturing defect affecting Hyundai engines from this period. My engine has been burning oil. The engine light has been on for just over the past year because an O2 sensor in the catalytic converter needs replacing, however, this is unrelated to the issue. The oil light started flickering earlier this year (approx 8 months ago) but would never stay on.

Your 2017 Tucson made an unusually loud grumbling noise from the engine and unexpectedly went into limp mode (reduced power mode) while driving, with no warning lights showing. The dealer couldn't diagnose or fix the problem at around 98,000 miles. Hyundai asked for oil change records and suggested the issue was caused by inadequate maintenance, though you may dispute this. The fix will likely involve engine diagnostics and potential internal engine repairs or replacement.

Your 2017 Tucson has an outstanding federal safety recall related to the engine that you've been unable to get completed. Over two years, multiple authorized Hyundai dealerships have canceled or refused to schedule your recall repair appointment. Additionally, your vehicle has experienced significant paint chipping that has affected its condition and resale value. Getting this engine recall completed promptly is critical, and the repair should be performed by an authorized dealership at no cost to you.

Your engine is burning through about a quart of oil every 500 miles, which is much higher than normal. A master technician confirmed the low oil level and performed an oil change, but the problem persists. You're having to carry extra oil with you on longer trips to prevent the engine from seizing, even though your vehicle has been well-maintained with all regular service completed on schedule.

Your 2017 Hyundai Tucson entered 'Limp Home Mode' and lost engine power while driving, with diagnostic testing showing a knock sensor detection system error (code P1326). Your vehicle is covered under a Hyundai class action settlement that should provide free repairs for this issue, but your dealership is refusing to perform the warrantied repair and instead demanding $816.22 for the knock sensor replacement. The dealership is also threatening storage fees and withholding diagnostic reports despite your requests. Resolving this will likely require contacting Hyundai corporate about the settlement coverage and potentially filing a complaint with your state's attorney general or small claims court to enforce the warranty.

Your car is burning through oil extremely quickly — it becomes completely dry within a week of an oil change, which can damage the engine and catalytic converter. You may experience stalling and poor acceleration while driving, creating a safety hazard. The engine warning lights don't alert you to this problem. The repair will likely involve diagnosing the source of the oil consumption, which could range from valve seal replacement to engine rebuild depending on the underlying cause.

While driving uphill, your engine RPM suddenly spiked and the vehicle hesitated to accelerate, accompanied by a warning message saying "Transmission too hot stop safely." After turning off the car for about two minutes, the warning disappeared even though the transmission wouldn't have actually cooled down that quickly, which is concerning. This sudden loss of power could be dangerous if it happens in traffic when you need to merge or climb hills.

Your engine is consuming oil much faster than normal — the oil level drops significantly between oil changes even though oil consumption tests show inconsistent results. The dealer has performed multiple visits, partial engine disassembly, and a combustion chamber cleaning, but the problem persists. The manufacturer has denied replacing the engine and the issue remains unresolved. A permanent fix may require engine replacement or a more comprehensive engine rebuild.

Engine has been burning through oil fast, requiring me to add oil every couple of weeks. 2 difference service places have told me this and also told me to contact Hyundai to file a complaint, as many other 2017 Hyundai Tucsons have recalls out for the same reason. This could cause an engine to fail if oil burns all the way out without my knowledge - safety hazard for me and others on the road.
