SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2011 Sonata vehicles manufactured from December 11, 2009, through September 1, 2010. The affected vehicles may experience a brake fluid leak from the two brake lines that connect the brake system's master cylinder to the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) due to insufficient seal between the inner brake hose and metal brake line fitting.
Fix: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake hoses with a revised service part, free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 122.

Your brake warning light came on and your engine shut off while driving. After the dealer performed a recall repair (Campaign 23V651000), the problem happened again. A second dealer diagnosed a failed hydraulic ABS booster sensor and replaced it, but the ABS warning light continues to turn on and off intermittently. The repair may involve replacing the ABS booster sensor, diagnostic work on the brake hydraulic system, or further investigation into related brake components.

The issue has happened multiple times while driving, sitting in traffic, or parked idling. The Brake Light comes on and starts flashing, Alarm Chimes, Brake Pedal goes to the floor seems to not have any hydraulic pressure, the brakes grind like I have no brake pads, and essentially I have NO Brakes. If I turn the car off and on it goes back to normal. I took it to have it checked for a diagnostic code, there were none.

The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact requested reimbursement for the previous repair. The request was declined by the manufacturer. The contact owns a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving at approximately 80 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed but was stiff and difficult to depress. The contact stated that her daughter accelerated to steer the vehicle away from slower traffic. Abs unit still in need of remedy Engine emitting smoke and harsh smell no incident has occurred yet but there may be damage occurring to my vehicle

The ABS system has had a recall due to the potential for an engine fire. The initial recall was set on 9/22/23. Up until today (12/6/23) no action has been taken by the manufacturer but we are left without a car.
The contact owned a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH the battery warning light illuminated. The contact stated that white smoke was issuing from under the hood. The contact stated that he depressed the brake pedal to stop the vehicle, however, the pedal depressed to the floorboard, and the vehicle did not slow. The contact stated that he was able to stop after the engine had stalled. The contact exited the vehicle and observed that flames were issuing from under the front end. The contact stated that the fire department was called and when they arrived the fire had spread to the passenger compartment. The contact stated that the fire department extinguished the fire with water. The vehicle was towed to an impound lot and the contact stated it was later declared a total loss by his insurance provider. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. When Driving the Alarms go off indicating a brake issue, my brake peddle goes to the the floor, car looses power and slows down to 5 MPH. Car will not accelerate past 5 MPH when i am trying to pull over or get off the freeway. Brakes are grinding as i try to use them, very dangerous while on the freeway. When I am able to pull over. I will turn off the car and turn it back on and the issue goes away. Now this may happen several more times before i am able to get some where safe. Dealership has no clue why its doing this after showing the video of the Alarms and describing it. No codes are found either. They just want to start replacing parts stating at 3k a round hoping it will fix the issue. This issue doesn't happen every day but it does happen while driving on the freeway. I have read online others having the same safety issue while driving and having thes same brake failures. Not sure where Hyundai is at with this issue and the fix for it? Yet does someone have to be in a serious accident before someone takes action with this issue?
The ABS system just stopped working while driving, loud brake warning beeps and the brakes stopped functioning making a vibrating sound then stopped working all together, I pulled over as safe as i could and found no leaks , fluid is good. started the car again and after 2 minutes did it again... was told by hyundai that a new abs modulator will be needed but it could not be reset to the computer so I would need a new ECU as well to match....are you kidding,,,thousands of dollars of work and labor ,,,,"""FOR BRAKES,""",,, I bought a money pit not a car...
Without warning, the Sonata stalls while in motion: - the brake pedal goes close to the floor, - the CHECK BRAKE light goes on, - the emergency brake audio alarm and light go on, - the READY light between the fuel and temperature gauges blinks. I have to pull over and turn the car off / on in order to get the car functional again. The speed of the car doesn't seem to matter. This has occurred 11 times over the past year, including 6 times today (7/22/2021) within a span of 15 min, while at speeds between 30- 60 mph. I took the car to the dealer (initially on 6/22/2021). There were no diagnostic error codes and they could not reproduce the problem. I called Hyundai, both on 6/22/2021 and today, to file a report. Hyundai did not provide any insights into the issue. Online, I have read of others having this same issue with Sonatas. Some believe a faulty power brake booster to be the cause.

NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP WHEN IT CRASHED INTO THE CURB. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. NO POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. NO DAMAGED TO THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER DON DAVIS HYUNDAI (214 HIGHWAY 332 W, LAKE JACKSON, TX 77566) WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT NO RECALLS WERE UNDER THE VIN. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DRIVABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 124,000.
I HAD SMELLING A GAS SMELL COMING FROM THE VENTS ON FRIDAY JULY 19TH ANDI TOOK IT TO FIRESTONE FOR A NEW BATTERY AND A OIL CHANGE. I CALLED THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP BECAUSE FIRESTONE TOLD ME ABOUT A NEW RECALL FOR THE FIRE PRESSURE FUEL REGULATOR AND THEY HIGHLY SUGGESTED I TAKE IT INTO THEM. I CALLED HYUNDAI AND THEY SAID FOR ME TO BRING IT IN AND I DIDN'T NEED AN APPOINTMENT SO I TOLD THEM I WOULD BE THERE AROUND 3-4PM YESTERDAY. SO I LEFT WORK EARLY, PICKED UP MY CAR FROM FIRESTONE AND HEADED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHICH WAS ABOUT 10 MILES AWAY. I GOT ON I-35 DOING ABOUT 40MPH OR SO BECAUSE OF TRAFFIC. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR NEXT TO ME STARTS HONKING AND WAVING SAYING MY CARS OF FIRE. I TRY TO APPLY THE BREAK BUT THERE WAS NO PRESSURE. MY INSTRUMENT COLUMN LIT UP LIKE THE 4TH OF JULY AND THEN ALMOST IMMEDIATELY SMOKE STARTS COMING IN FROM THE VENTS, DASHBOARD AND FLOOR. SO MY ONLY OPTION IS TO TUCK AND ROLL DOING ABOUT 35-40MPH ON ONE OF THE BUSIEST HIGHWAYS IN AUSTIN. SO I TUCK AND ROLL, PEOPLE ARE STOPPED TO HELP. I SEE MY CAR CONTINUE TO ROLL INTO THE BARRIER AND WHILE CAR BURST INTO FLAMES.
I WAS DRIVING WEST ON SUNNYSIDE ROAD AFTER LEAVING THE PARKING LOT OF NEW SEASONS. I COULD SEE THAT THE LIGHT WAS RED AND I PULLED OUT ONTO SUNNYSIDE ROAD. IT WAS ABOUT 200 FEET TO THE TRAFFIC THAT WAS STOPPED. I WAS DOING ABOUT 20 MPH WHEN I REALIZED THAT MY CAR WAS NOT GOING TO STOP. I PUSHED HARD ONTO THE BRAKES BUT THE CAR CONTINUED FOREWARD UNDER THE PICKUP IN FRONT OF ME. EVEN WITH THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED I HAD NO CONTROL. I WAS PUSHING THE TRUCK FOREWARD. THE OTHER DRIVER TURNED ONTO 157TH AVE AND I WAS STILL UNABLE TO STOP THE CAR. I ALSO TURNED RIGHT ONTO 157TH AVE. IT WAS UP HILL I TURNED OFF THE KEY AND IT CAME TO A STOP. MY WIFE WAS PANNICKING AND SO WAS I. THE CAR WAS FILLED WITH SMOKE AND A LOT OF HEAT. MY WIFE WAS SCREAMING FOR SOMEONE TO CALL 911. THE DRIVER OF THE TRUCK RUSHED BACK TO SEE IF WE WERE ALL OK. HE CALLED 911. MY WIFE WAS SORE AS THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AND HIT HER IN THE CHEST. SHE HAD PAIN IN HER NECK TOO. I WAS OK AT THE MOMENT. I WAS WORRIED ABOUT THE OTHER DRIVER. HE SAID THAT HE WAS FINE. HE SAID THAT HE HAD TO HONK HIS HORN TO GET THE CAR IN FRONT OF HIM TO MOVE. THEY DID AND HE WAS ABLE TO TURN RIGHT. I AM UPSET WITH RON TONKIN HYUNDAI AS I HAVE HAD TO WAIT ALMOST A MONTH TO GET AN APPOINTMENT FOR MY OIL CHANGE AND THE RECALLS TAKEN CARE OF. THE FIRST RECALL WAS FOR THE AIR BAGS. THE SECOND RECALL WAS FOR THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PIPE MAY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED MISALIGNED OR IMPROPERLY TORQUED WHEN THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED ALLOWING THE FUEL TO LEAK. I AM VERY UPSET WITH RON TONKIN HYUNDAI AS I HAVE HAD TO WAIT FOR ALMOST A MONTH TO GET AN APPOINTMENT. JENNIFER LOPEZ THE SERVICE ADVISOR. MY APPOINTMENT WAS SET FOR JUNE 26TH 4 DAYS AFTER THE ACCIDENT. I WENT IN TO CHANGE THE CARS AS I HAVE A 2004 ELANTRA. I HAVE FREE OIL CHANGES ON BOTH CARS. SHE TOLD ME THAT THE RECALLS WERE NOT THE REASON AND ASKED ME IF I WAS GOING TO BUY ANOTHER HYUNDAI.
I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE ALL 4 BRAKE CALIPERS ON MY 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS DUE TO NOT RELEASING AND WEARING OUT BRAKE PADS AND ROTARS. HAS THERE BEEN ANY RECALLS IN REGARDS TO THIS MATTER?
OUR CAR WAS IN THE NUMBER 2 LANE OF A 5 LANE FREEWAY WHEN IT ALL OF A SUDDEN LOST POWER AND THE GAS PEDAL DIDN'T WORK AND THEN A VERY SUDDEN, HARD JOLT IN THE CAR. I WANTED TO DOWNSHIFT, BUT THE SHIFT LEVER WENT TO PARK WITH NO EFFECT. I TURNED ON MY TURN SIGNAL TO GET TO THE SHOULDER ON THE RIGHT. I LET THE WHEELS DRAG ALONG THE ASPHALT CURB OF THE SHOULDER UNTIL I APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND TURNED OFF THE IGNITION, BY THEN, THE SMOKE WAS FILLING THE CABIN COMING THROUGH ALL OF THE AIR VENTS AND MY WIFE AND I GOT OUT AS QUICKLY AS WE COULD. IT WASN'T UNTIL THEN THAT I FOUND THAT WE HAD BEEN FOLLOWED BY A TOW TRUCK WITH ITS EMERGENCY LIGHTS ON AND BLOCKED THE SLOW LANE OF TRAFFIC FOR US AND WHO HAD HIS DISPATCHER CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. THE ENGINE IN THIS CAR HAD BEEN REPLACED IN MARCH, 2018 UNDER A RECALL FOR ENGINE KNOCKING NOISE. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER TRIED HIS FIRE EXTINGUISHER, BUT IT HAD NO EFFECT AND HE STATED IT WOULD NOT WORK BECAUSE IT WAS A GASOLINE FIRE. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED.IN ORDER TO INSTALL THE NEW ENGINE THEY HAVE TO BEND THE FUEL LINES OUT OF THE WAY AND A FUEL LINE COULD HAVE BEEN KINKED, OR WAS NEVER INSTALLED PROPERLY. NO ONE HAD DONE ANY WORK ON THE ENGINE SINCE IT WAS INSTALLED BY THE HYUNDAI DEALER. I HAVE A FIRE REPORT, BUT IT IS 8 PAGES. HIGHWAY PATROL WAS PRESENT, BUT THEY DO NOT MAKE A REPORT WHEN ONLY 1 CAR IS INVOLVED.
REPLACED REAR BRAKE PADS, ROTORS TWICE WITHIN 2 MONTHS. REPLACING HOSES, CALIPERS, EVEN THOUGH NO SIGN OF LEAK AND CALIPERS EASILY MOVE IN AND OUT. MANUFACTURE PROBLEM/ABS? OUT OF WARRANTY AND DEALER WANTS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

TAKATA RECALL - IN 2016 THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH TO BE FIXED ON MY CAR. THEY SAID THAT THEY FIXED IT BUT NOW I AM HAVING THE SAME ISSUES AS MY BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH IS STILL MALFUNCTIONING. MY BRAKE LIGHT STAYS ON THE WHOLE TIME WHEN I AM DRIVING WHICH I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE BULBS AS THEY WERE BLOWN AND ONE OF THEM HAD MELTED. AS FAR AS I CAN SEE, IF THIS WAS PROPERLY REPAIRED THEN NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN HAPPENING. I HAVE TO CONSTANTLY LIFT MY BRAKE PEDAL TO TURN THEM OFF BEFORE I GET OUT OF THE CAR SO THAT THEY WILL NOT BE ON. THIS HAPPENS WHILE IN MOTION AND STATIONARY

I JUST PURCHASED THE CAR MAY 2017. I HAVE HAD NO ISSUES WITH THE CAR. HOWEVER ON SUNDAY AUGUST 20, 2017 MY BREAK LIGHTS WOULD NOT GO OFF. AFTER ABOUT 2 HRS OF TRYING TO GET THEM TO GO OFF. NOTHING. I THEN DID SOME RESEARCH AND VERIFIED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE ISSUE THAT I WAS HAVING. SO I TOOK IT TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. I HONESTLY DONT BELIEVE THAT RECALLS SHOULD HAVE "CLOSE" DATES. NOT EVERY PURCHASES THAT CAR THE YR IT WAS MADE. NONE THE LESS EVEN WITH A RECALL I AM HAVING TO COME OUT OF POCKET ORIGINALLY $101, UNTIL I EXPLAINED MY ISSUES WITH THEM AND THEN IT WENT TO $81. IM STILL A LITTLE ANNOYED THAT A RECALL CAN EXPIRE AND LEAVE THE NEW OWNER WITH PAYING FOR THE ISSUE.

I WAS DRIVING DOWN FM 2410 IN HARKER HEIGHTS, TEXAS GOING ABOUT 50 MILES AN HOUR THE SPEED LIMIT. CAME UPON A CURVE AND STARTED TO APPLY MY BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN. AS I WAS APPLYING MY BRAKES I HEARD A SCRAPPING SOUND AND THE BRAKE PEDAL SEEMED NOT TO BE FUNCTIONING AS REQUIRED. THE BRAKES LOCKED UP (AS EVIDENCE LOOKING AT THE SKID MARKS SOME 15 TO 20 FEET LONG) THE CAR SEEMED TO BE ACCELERATING INSTEAD OF SLOWING DOWN. AT THE SAME TIME, I WAS TRYING TO TAKE MY FOOT OF THE BREAK AND TURN MY STEERING WHEEL TO REGAIN TOTAL CONTROL OF THE CAR. MY BRAKES HAS JUST STARTED MAKING A LOUD, ANNOYING, AND CRACKING NOISE EVERY TIME I PRESS AND RELEASE MY BRAKES. I DO NOT NEED BRAKE PADS, SHOES OR ROTARIES. WHAT!!!!!
MY CAR BATTERY STARTED DYING ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS IN MARCH 2015. ON MARCH 20TH, MY CAR WON'T START AGAIN AND THE REPAIR SHOP SAID THE BATTERY AND STARTER HAD DIED COMPLETELY AND I HAD TO REPLACE IT AT A COST OF $737.79. AFTER THE REPAIRS ON APRIL 13TH, MY CAR WON'T START AGAIN. I TOLD THE REPAIR SHOP THAT I NOTICED THE NIGHT BEFORE THAT MY BRAKES LIGHT WAS NOT GOING OFF. FIRESTONE TOWED THE CAR AT THEIR EXPENSE AND DID THE REPAIR TO THE BRAKES LIGHT AT NO COST BECAUSE I HAD ALREADY PAID CLOSE TO $738 TRYING TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. THEY FOUND THE ISSUE WITH 'STOPPER PAD'. I THEN SUBMITTED A REIMBURSEMENT REQUEST TO HYUNDAI FOR CAMPAIGN #136 BUT THEY ONLY REIMBURSED ME FOR $157 AND REFUSES TO REFUND THE BALANCE. WHEN FIRESTONE BILLED ME FOR THE REPAIRS THEY SAID SHOULD BE DONE, THE CAR CONTINUED TO HAVE ISSUES UNTIL I NOTICED THE BRAKES LIGHT WAS STAYING ON. FIRESTONE TOWED MY CAR AND REPAIR THE ISSUE AT THEIR EXPENSE. IF IT WAS NOT RELATED WHY WOULD THEY REPAIR MY VEHICLE AT THEIR EXPOSE? I WILL FILE A COMPLAINT WITH NATIONAL SAFETY ADMINISTRATION. THIS IS TOTALLY UNFAIR.

AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES I COULD FEEL THE ABS TRYING TO KICK IN AND THEN THE CAR STARTED EXCELLERATING. I WAS APPROACHING A VERY BUSY STREET SO I PUT THE CAR INTO A SNOWBANK. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP, IN FEAR OF DRIVING IT, TO GET OT INSPECTED. MIND YOU, THIS MAKE AND MODEL CAR HAS HAD SEVERAL RECALLS. WHILE IN SHOP THEY FIXED TWO RECALLS #'S 132 AND 136 AND THEN THEY DIAGNOSED THAT THE BRAKE SENSOR MALFUNCTIONED AND THAT THEY HAD TO RECODE IT. I WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE AVOIDED WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN A MAJOR ACCIDENT. THEY, HYUNDAI, DON'T REALLY WANT TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT ONCE IT'S PAST WARRANTY.

THE DEALERSHIP HAS YET TO RECEIVE A NEW ENGINE FROM THE MANUFACTURER. FURTHERMORE, I STILL PAY PAYMENTS ON THE VEHICLE AND HAVE DONE SO BEFORE THE RECALL WAS RELEASED AS WELL AS EVEN AFTER IT WAS SENT TO THE DEALER, AS REQUESTED BY HYUNDAI. I SPOKE TO HYUNDAI TODAY AS TO AN UPDATE TO WHEN THIS WILL BE COMPLETED AND THEY DID NOT HAVE AN ANSWER. I SENT THEM A LETTER REQUESTING THAT THEY BUY BACK THE VEHICLE DO TO THE SAFETY CONCERNS AS WELL AS THE DELAY IN FIXING THIS MATTER. THEY DECLINED AND THIS IS WHY I AM FILING A COMPLAINT. THE FRONT BRAKES ON OUR HYUNDAI SONATA FAILED 9/17/15 FORCING MY DAUGHTER OFF THE ROAD USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. THIS IS A RESULT OF ON-GOING BRAKE PROBLEMS DATING BACK TO WHEN WE PURCHASED THIS CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED CAR 11/25/13. HYUNDAI REFUSED TO COVER THE REPAIR, SO WE PAID TO HAVE BRAKE PADS, ROTORS AND CALIPERS REPLACED. THIS IS THE 3RD SET OF BRAKES WE'VE PAID TO REPLACE IN LESS THAN 12,000 MILES. AFTER NUMEROUS CALLS AND CORRESPONDENCE WITH HYUNDAI CONSUMER AFFAIRS EXPLAINING THIS IS A LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM CAUSED BY DEFECTIVE BRAKE SYSTEM, THEY DID PAY FOR THE CALIPERS BUT REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE OTHER COMPONENTS. THE FRONT BRAKES HAD GRINDING NOISE SINCE WE BOUGHT THE CAR AND ONLY LASTED 2,743 MILES (DEALER TOLD US THIS CPO CAR HAD BRAND NEW BRAKES), THE SECOND SET ONLY LASTED 9,856 MILES. SINCE THE CALIPER WAS REPLACED 9/21/15, THERE IS NO MORE GRINDING. IT SEEMS CLEAR THAT THE DEFECTIVE CALIPER CAUSED THE PAD AND ROTOR FAILURE, BUT HYUNDAI DENIES THIS. I WAS ON THE FREEWAY DRIVING AT 65 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE STALLED AND SHUT OFF. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS INDICATING AN ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE. I HAD TO PUSH THE START BUTTON THREE TIMES BEFORE IT ACTUALLY STARTED UP. THE BRAKES WERE FINE WHEN I STOPPED THE CAR AT THE PARKING SPOT. I LEFT THE CAR RUNNING & CALLED MY HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP. EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM & EXPLAINED THAT I WAS ALARMED BY THIS. USUALLY SECOND OR THIRD TRY RESULT IN A START. DESPITE DEALER REPLACEMENT OF STARTER, FUEL PUMP AND BATTERY, THE PROBLEM CONTINUES PERIODICALLY. 2) REAR BRAKES NEEDED REPLACEMENT AT 24K MILES. WEAR WAS UNEVEN: LEFT BRAKE WAS GRINDING INTO ROTOR AND RIGHT BRAKE WAS ONLY ABOUT 50 PERCENT WORN. THE 2011 SONATA IS UNABLE TO START BY PRESSING DOWN ON BOTH THE BRAKE PEDAL AND START BUTTON. I HAD THIS PROBLEM FOR OVER 3 MONTHS. THIS FAILURE HAPPENS ABOUT 1-2 TIMES A WEEK. ONCE FAILED TO START, THE BRAKE PEDAL LOCKED UP WHILE THE DASHBOARD DISPLAY STILL SAYS "PRESS DOWN BRAKE PEDAL TO START." WITH REPEATED TRIES TO START THE CAR, IT SOMETIMES STARTED AFTER 5-10 MINUTES, BUT SOMETIMES IT TOOK OVER 1 HOURS TO START THE ENGINE. IN THE LAST MONTH OF MARCH 2012, WHEN DRIVING IN TOWN OR ON THE HIGHWAY, MY ESC LIGHT WILL COME ON FOR NO REASON IN PERFECT WEATHER CONDITIONS AND THEN WHEN I STOP SOMEWHERE E.G. I WAS PULLING INTO PARKING SPACE, HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, CAR WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY STOPPED, ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR ACCELERATED, TRAVELED APPROXIMATELY 8 FEET, THE BRAKE DIDN'T STOP THE CAR. WHEN A REPRESENTATIVE OF MY INSURANCE COMPANY CALLED ME, HE STATED THAT HE HEARD THAT I HAD STEPPED ON THE GAS PEDAL INSTEAD OF THE BRAKE, THIS IS NOT TRUE, I AM 100 PERCENT SURE. MY HUSBAND WAS A PASSENGER IN THE CAR AND AFTER WE HAD CALMED DONE, WE DISCUSSED WHAT HAD HAPPENED, HE STATED TO ME THAT THE CAR WAS ALMOST STOPPED AND THEN JUST SUDDENLY MADE A LOUD ROARING SOUND AND ACCELERATED. OUR CAR WAS TOWED TO A HYUNDAI REPAIR STATION AND WE ARE WAITING TO HEAR HOW MUCH THE DAMAGES ARE. TONIGHT I WAS REAR ENDED BY A WOMAN IN AN SUV, WHO'S BRAKES DID NOT WORK IN HER DURANGO, SHE SAID. THERE WERE NO SKID MARKS INDICATING AN ATTEMPTED STOP. HER IMPACT ON MY VEHICLE WAS SEVERE. POLICE OFFICER GUESSED SHE WAS GOING 40 MPH WHEN SHE HIT MY CAR. MY CAR WAS SHOVED FORWARD INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF MINE, THAT CAR THEN HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF IT. THERE WERE 3 CARS, MINE LAST IN LINE, SITTING AT A RED LIGHT. WE WERE ALL STOPPED. THEN THERE WAS A 4TH CAR THAT HIT MINE FROM BEHIND. THE MATTER IM REPORTING IS THAT THE AIRBAGS IN MY HYUNDAI SONATA SE 2011 CAR DID NOT DEPLOY WHEN I THEN HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE IMPACT WAS GREAT ENOUGH TO CAUSE THAT CAR TO THEN HIT ANOTHER CAR AND THAT CAUSED A CRACK IN THE RADIATOR OF THE CAR IN FRONT OF MINE. ALSO, AFTER I HIT THAT CAR IN FRONT OF ME, I THEN BOUNCED BACK ABOUT 10 FEET. MORE EVIDENCE OF IMPACT. WHY NO AIRBAGS? I DID NOT SEE VERY MUCH DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF MY CAR NOR THE BACK OF THE CAR THAT WAS DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF MINE, WHILE THE BACK OF MY CAR WAS BAD ENOUGH THAT I EXPECT TO BE TOLD IT IS NOT REPAIRABLE.. IM REPORTING JUST IN CASE YOU RECEIVE ANY OTHER REPORTS INDICATING THERE IS SOMETHING FAULTY CONCERNING AIRBAGS IN THE HYUNDAI. I KNOW AIRBAGS ARE NOT TO DEPLOY IN REAR END COLLISION BUT SINCE I THEN HIT ANOTHER CAR FRONTALLY, I WOULD THINK THE AIRBAGS WOULD DEPLOY. MY HUSBAND WAS IN THE PASSENGER, FRONT SEAT AND IN ORDER TO BRACE HIMSELF, HE PUT HIS HAND UP AT THE WINDSHIELD. THE GLASS WAS BROKEN IN AN AREA THE SIZE OF A CANTALOUPE FROM THE IMPACT AGAINST HIS HAND. IM THINKING THE IMPACT MUST HAVE BEEN MODERATE TO SEVERE. ON THE UP SIDE, MY SONATA TOOK THAT HIT AND SUSTAINED THE DAMAGE TO THE OUTSIDE AND UP INTO THE AIR AT THE TRUNK RATHER THAN INTO THE CAB OF THE CAR. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE AGAIN TO DEALER AFTER 1 WEEK AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM AGAIN. THEY DID SOME TROUBLESHOOTING AGAIN, THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY DIDN'T IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM THIS TIME. I SPOKE WITH HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SUPPORT AND THEY DIRECTED ME TO ANOTHER DEALER AND ASKED ME TO DOCUMENT THE PROBLEM. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE AND SUGGESTED THAT I UNLOCK THE "SHIFT LOCK" IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES! I TOLD THEM THAT SHIFT LOCK IS ONLY USEFUL IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES. BUT THE BRAKE PEDAL IS NOT RELEASING THE GEAR MOST OF THE TIME WHICH IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. THERE IS NO ANSWER FROM THE DEALER. I PURCHASED THE 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA JUNE 2010. I WAS REALLY ENJOYING THE NEW SLEEK LOOK OF THE SONATA. I HAVE NEVER OWNED ANY TYPE OF HYUNDAI VEHICLE BEFORE. JANUARY 2011 I WAS TRAVELING AT ABOUT 35 MILES PER HOUR LIGHT SNOW WAS FALLING BUT THE ROADS WERE CLEAR. AS I WAS APPROACHING TRAFFIC AHEAD THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND TRAFFIC BEGAN TO MOVE. I NOTICED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME NOT QUITE TAKING OFF WITH TRAFFIC SO I BEGAN TO BRAKE. TO MY SURPRISE - GUESS WHAT - THE CAR WAS NOT STOPPING.
