Your 2011-2014 Sonata has developed severe rust on the underside of the vehicle, and a previous repair attempt (Service Campaign 946 in 2017) did not stop the problem—the rust has gotten worse. You're concerned that the structural metal is so corroded it could break while you're driving, creating a safety hazard. Hyundai has declined to repair it further because your vehicle has a branded title, despite the ongoing structural safety risk.

The interior and exterior driver side door and driver side rear door handles are no longer functional on this vehicle. This is a well known problem with these vehicles that poses a grave safety hazard. In the event of a fire or accident, it would be impossible to exit or gain access to my vehicle without breaking the side glass. I have spoken to my Hyundai dealer and they agreed that it is a known, dangerous problem, however no TSB or recall has been issued. My only recourse is to pay to have this defect repaired. This is the first vehicle I have ever owned that has had this type of issue.

Driving from home to a shopping center, approximately 25 miles, I did not observe any unusual noises nor smoke nor dashboard warning lights. Once I parked and shut off the engine in the shopping center parking lot, I observed a small amount of thick, white smoke coming from the hood on the front passenger side of my car, and then the smoke abruptly stopped. I was concerned enough that I decided I should probably move my car to a parking space a bit further away from the store I planned to go into in order to be further away from other vehicles. I started the engine again, and once again, no smoke nor unusual noises nor warning lights. I drove around to the next parking aisle and parked in a different parking space. Once I turned off the engine again, the smoke then immediately started from the right side of the hood again and quickly smoke started coming from the left side of the hood. I was quickly trying to grab my things to get out of the car as I saw the paint starting to peel off of the hood of my car. I was barely able to get out of my car as fire flames and very thick white smoke were then emerging from the hood. A person in the parking lot called 911 for me, and the local fire department arrived and put the fire out that destroyed my car. I am in the process of securing the Fire Marshall's lengthy report. At the present time, my vehicle is at our home where we paid to have it towed.

I have a lot of paint chips on car. I see a lot of 2011 same model have the same problem. Most of the paint chips are coming from top of my windshield. I have complained a few years ago also hoping that this issue can be solved.

The rear passenger door will not open from the inside or outside. When my kids are in the back seat, they cannot get out that door and in the event of an emergency on the right side of the car, would be put at great risk not being able to open the left side passenger door. I had just opened the door to retrieve my backpack from the back seat and tried the door again and it was stuck. I unlocked the doors from the front seat and tried again to no avail. I went inside the car to try and open it and despite it being unlocked, it will not open. the interior latch feels like it is not moving anything when I try and open it, but the door acts like it is locked and cannot be opened with the handles. I have not taken it to the dealer yet, but plan to if I cannot fix it on my own.

THE CONSUMER AFFAIRS OF THE MANUFACTURER CALLED THE CONTACT BACK AND STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED TO COVER HALF OF THE REPAIR COST. ENGINE BAY CAUGHT FIRE AND CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS. ENGINE HAD BEEN REPLACED PREVIOUSLY UNDER SONATA THETA ENGINE RECALL. INDEPENDENT MECHANIC NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A FUEL LEAK IN THE ENGINE BAY. WAS ON THE WAY TO HYUNDAI DEALER WHEN THE FIRE HAPPENED. THE CAR WAS MOVING AT ABOUT 20 MPH WHEN IT LOST POWER AND SMOKE STARTED SPEWING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. EXITED THE VEHICLE AND THE ENGINE BAY WAS ABLAZE WITH 60 SECONDS. NO INJURIES OCCURRED.

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000.

I CONTACTED HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE REGARDING THE ISSUE BECAUSE THEIR RECALL WEBSITE AS WELL AS THEIR AUTOMATIC VOICE RECORDING AT THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE DOES NOT HAVE THIS RECALL LISTED AS AN OPEN OR CLOSED CAMPAIGN. THE REP ADVISED HE DOES NOT SEE IT IN THEIR SYSTEM AND HE ALSO REACHED OUT TO HIS SUPERVISOR TO DISCUSSS THE ISSUE. THE REP ADVISED HIS SUPERVISOR STATES SINCE IT IS NOT SHOWING IN THEIR SYSTEM, THEN THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FULFILL THE RECALL ON THE DOOR LOCKS. I ADVISED THE CAMPAIGN OCCURRED DURING PRODUCTION, WHERE PRODUCTION HALTED AND THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM TO THOSE NOT PUT OUT ON THE MARKET AND RECALLED OTHERS THAT WERE ALREADY OUT TO FIX THE PROBLEM. REP ADVISED SINCE THE CAMPAIGN WAS CLOSED THEY WOULD NOT FULFILL MY REQUEST. TAKATA INFLATORS: HAD A CAR FIRE FROM FUEL LINE PER FIRE DEPT INFORMATION. I WAS ON THE 405 WEST BOUND FWY WHEN I STARTED TO SMELL GAS AND THE FRONT HOOD OF THE CAR I NOTICED BLACK SMOKE COMING OUT. I GOT OUT OF THE FWY AND THEN PARKED THE CAR, WHEN SOMEONE DRIVING OF THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION YELLED FOR ME TO GET OUT OF THE CAR. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND RAN OUT TO THE SIDE WALK WITHIN A FEW MINUTES THE CAR WHEN UP IN SMOKE AND THEN IT EXPLODED TWICE. PEOPLE FROM THE SURROUNDING BUSINESSES CAME OUT TO SEE IF I WAS ALRIGHT. THE OWNER OF THE FLOWER NURSERY CAME OUT AND CALLED THE FIRE DEPT. THEY ARRIVED AND TURNED OUT THE FIRE.

ON THANKSGIVING EVENING NOVEMBER 28, 2013 @ 7:30 PM, MY 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA THAT I PURCHASED NEW, CAUGHT FIRE ON I 95 WHILE DRIVING IT. THE CAR HAS ONLY 30,350 MILES AND IS PROPERLY MAINTAINED AND GARAGE KEPT. THE VEHICLE HAD THE OIL AND FILTER REPLACED 5 DAYS EARLIER AND THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF ANY FLUIDS LEAKING IN THE GARAGE. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS THAT CAME ON AND THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE READ AS NORMAL UNTIL JUST BEFORE THE ENGINE SHUT OFF (THEN ALL THE DASH LIGHTS CAME ON) AND WE PULLED OVER ONTO THE SHOULDER OF A BUSY HIGHWAY AT NIGHT. I RAISED THE HOOD, SMOKE POURED OUT AND I COULD SEE SMALL FLAMES UNDER THE ENGINE. I PURCHASED THE CAR IN MARCH 2011. INAPRIL,2011 THE FRONT BUMPER CAME OFF THE CLIP AND I HAVE TO REPLACE THE BUMPER AT COST OF $ 1000. SUBSEQUENTLY, THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF FRONT BUMPER. THE CAR IS DESIGNED WITH FRONT END VERY LOW AND THE BUMPER IS HOLD BY A SINGLE CLIP WHICH MAKES IT EASIER FOR IT TO COME OFF EVEN WHEN CAR IS BEING PARKED AND IF IT HITS PARKING CEMENT MARKER. HYUNDAI DEALER REFUSES TO FIX PROBLEM UNDER WARRANTY AND SO FAR I HAVE SPENT $3000. *TR

WHEN PARKING THE FRONT END RUBBED UP AGAINST A CURB AND DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE, WHEN PULLING OUT IT ALMOST PULLED OFF THE FRONT BUMPER COMPLETELY OFF THE CAR. THE FRONT CLIPS THAT HOLD THE FRONT BUMPER ON HAD BROKEN AND WOULD REQUIRE REPLACING THE ENTIRE FRONT BUMPER AND AFTER READING MORE REVIEWS SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS CLIP BREAKING ARE BEING MADE. THIS BUMPER IS WAY TO EXPENSIVE FOR SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS A CHEAP CLIP THAT HOLDS THE BUMPER ON. THIS IS A VERY POOR DESIGN AND I WARN ANYONE BUYING THIS CAR DO NOT PULL UP ON THE CURB I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH THE CLIPS ON THE BUMPER CANNOT HANDLE IT. I LOVE MY CAR OTHER THEN THIS AND SO FAR UNFORTUNATELY THE DEALERSHIP WILL NOT HONOR UNDER WARRANTY BUT GOING TO CONTACT HYUNDAI DIRECTLY, BUT NOT HOLDING MY BREATH. *TR

TWICE THE FRONT BUMPER HAS SEPARATED FROM BODY ON MY DAUGHTERS 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA, THE FIRST TIME THE DEALER STATED SHE MUST HAVE HIT SOMETHING BUT THIS WAS NOT THE CASE EVEN THOUGH THE DEALER INSISTED ON PUTTING THE CAR UP ON A LIFT TO INSPECT FOR DAMAGE, THE CAR WAS ONLY ON THE ROAD FOR 3 DAYS OR LESS. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALER NO CHARGE. NOW THE CAR IS 3 MONTHS OLD AND THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED AGAIN. THE BUMPER IS NOT ATTACHED TO THE BODY PROPERLY IN THE DESIGN PROCESS, AND WHATEVER CLIPS THEY USE RELEASE THE BUMPER WHEN THE CAR IS DRIVEN. SOONER OR LATER THE BUMPER WILL FLY OFF THIS CAR AND EITHER BLIND THE DRIVER WHEN IT DAMAGES THE WINDSHIELD OR CAUSE AN ACCIDENT WHEN A DRIVER BEHIND THE BUMPERLESS CAR AVOIDS THE DEBRIS OF THE BUMPER.
